I’m really enjoying Crime Boss Rockay City and highly recommend it! If you have a soft spot for the cast then that’s a good draw card… but if you have a big ol’ spot of nostalgia for music of the 90’s… it will be hard to suppress the smile as you enter a shopping mall only to hear Freestyler playing. If you want a great heist game that involves a bit more thinking and planning than GTA or even Payday… grab a copy!

Crime Boss: Rockay City is a pleasant surprise considering all of the aspects that make its foundations usually crumble from the weight. Just get ready to die, try and die again until you take the throne.

Crime Boss: Rockay City has done something that few other games have accomplished since the advent of patching. The team has taken what was a very bad game at launch and made it good enough to be enjoyable. The missions may be short, but the lack of lag and the presence of better-than-expected AI companions makes each encounter fun. The presence of the player XP system makes the tweaked campaign and online modes worth grinding through. Coming in at a cheaper base price than its Epic Games Store launch price, Rockay City is a decent purchase for those who were disappointed with Payday 3 and exhausted with Payday 2.

Being a gangster in the 90s was not easy, but this "simulator" makes it clear to me that a group of good actors does not look good when the narrative is not well done. Crime Boss: Rockay City is an ambitious but uncreative game in some ways. You can have a good time alone or in coop mode, although the theme isn't bad at all.

Crime Boss: Rockay City doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel, but I would have expected the content to be a bit more varied. Just about every piece of dialog is cringe, but so are many of the 80s and 90s B-movies these actors are known for, so I guess it fits them perfectly. The mix of resource management and first-person shooter mechanics is interesting but doesn’t save the game from mediocrity. Everything about Crime Boss: Rockay City screams “obsolete,” but the co-op mode might offer players some fun, even if it’s just for a limited time. This isn’t a bad game, just one that feels like it traveled forward in time from the 90s.

If you like rogue-like games and 90s crime movies and don’t mind repetitiveness, Crime Boss: Rockay City might be up your alley. But those thinking this may be a Payday or GTA clone, it’s not either of those completely.

If you're looking for something similar to Payday 2 as a shooting experience to be played in a GTA-style metropolitan setting with some micro-management elements, Crime Boss: Rockay City might give you some satisfaction.

If the developers keep their promise to publish new free content and solve some problems, the first work of the Brno-based studio could carve out a small space in the gaming landscape, also thanks to its affordable cost.

Crime Boss: Rockay City is a heist game clearly inspired by Payday, but with a strategic twist that adds a pinch of depth to the experience, also due to the thrill of the roguelite approach and permadeath. The game features a surprising cast of Hollywood stars from the 80s and the 90s, but when it comes to gameplay the experience feels simplistic and repetitive.

Despite its many flaws, Crime Boss Rockay City is often fun and will make you wonder what would have happened if you decided to approach things differently. Unfortunately, the game feels not-so-polished and, apart from some technical issues on PC, its structure doesn't give enough credit to some of its good design idea.

Crime Boss wants to be majestic, but the game doesn't do it very well. It's not exactly bad, but despite all the effort to be pompous, it feels very cheap. The idea is good, but the execution is poor. On the other hand, the game is suitable for beginners in the cooperative action genre.

There’s a lot that I hope gets fixed and altered, and it’s crying out for a greater variety of maps and story beats to pull its campaign runs together from. The fundamentals of its design are genuinely great though, and it’ll be a tremendous shame if it just withers away and dies. There’s a shining diamond here, it’s just a bummer that it’s buried under so much muck.

If you expect a new Payday here, you will inevitably be disappointed. Crime Boss: Rockay City has many interesting features and good ideas, but only half-heartedly pursues most of them.

To be upfront, this by no means is the best thing that has been released to the heisting genre, but having said that, it is also not the worst *cough Payday 3 cough*. Crime Boss has a lot to offer and is fairly priced unlike a lot of the games we see today. Players also need to keep in mind that Crime Boss is receiving continuous support and improvements with 4 major updates planned for the future. The one thing that lets this game down is the writing and poor NPC design. If you are looking into purchasing Crime Boss, I would recommend getting a friend to tag along with you, as the solo gameplay loop can get boring very fast. With how dedicated InGame Studious is towards this title, I have no doubt it is going to get better over time, but currently, there is a lot of refining that needs to be done.
  15. A game that falls short of its potential. I like what it’s offering, but the execution is just a little off in almost every aspect. If you play through the single-player campaign, you will have a good time, but it won’t last more than two or three playthroughs, which is not good for a mode that brands itself as a roguelike.

Rockay City has something interesting in its novel campaign structure, and its modest price tag currently discounted to $31.99 makes it an outright bargain. But there’s not enough to appreciate that warrants anybody to stick around for more than a random night with some buddies. The whole project is clearly a loving homage to the glory days of ‘90s action flicks, but the tone-deaf execution misses the mark. But how long can that hold your attention for when your multiplayer game time is far better spent elsewhere?

Crime Boss: Rockay City's execution isn't revolutionary or exceptional, but its shot at an innovative roguelike campaign is a praiseworthy proof of concept. It might not have the most versatile activities, best gunplay, or first-class writing, but Crime Boss: Rockay City does provide an interesting experience that, like a cheap B-movie, has that certain kind of charm you can't help but enjoy.

Overall, Crime Boss: Rockay City offers so many conceptually interesting gameplay mechanics that could work well together, but either doesn't give the player enough opportunities to use them, or fails to tie them into other aspects of the game. There is some minor depth to the game, but it's overshadowed by what could have been. On top of that, too many elements feel like they’re out of the players hands, and lead to cheap deaths. If you simply need to play Crime Boss: Rockay City, then you’ll be pleased to hear that it’s only $40, and even less if you wait for a sale.

I didn’t expect much and I’m still disappointed. We were promised spectacular gunfights and breathtaking heists, basically an interactive gangster movie, but instead got a mediocre game with some interesting ideas (e.g. roguelike elements) that failed to outweigh dated overall design, awful AI and poor writing. Well, at least it has co-op.

Crime Boss: Rockay City’s heist gameplay is squandered by a myriad of bugs, mindless, boring gameplay, and a severe lack of fun despite its best attempts to have the presence of GTA and the mechanics of Payday, both of which are much better games.

Crime Boss' gameplay and general structure aren't inherently bad, they're just lacking the same teeth players can expect from other crime games. It tries to lean on its star-studded cast to deliver it from mediocrity. Instead, they drag it down.

Crime Boss tries to stitch together a bunch of procedurally generated, samey content with a few Hollywood faces and call it a video game, but ends up not being much of anything at all.

Crime Boss: Rockay City isn't a terrible game, but it is one that fails to even scratch the surface of its own potential. Sometimes mediocrity is worse than being bad, though, especially when all of the game's most unique concepts feel half-baked and the core gameplay experience is average at best. For a game that draws immediate parallels to other highly successful co-op crime games, Crime Boss fails to make itself stand out and tries to cover that up with gimmick-y Hollywood performances.

For anyone looking for a glitzy, 90s-inspired Payday (because there is enough of a heisting focus for me to want to compare the two) that doubles down on its first-person action shooter gameplay, then this will give you at least a few hours of fun before you want to devote your time to something with more longevity.

In its current state, Crime Boss: Rockay City feels like a low-level wannabe criminal trying to get rich quick on a street populated with multiplayer shooters who already do better.

If the idea of playing a shooter crammed on top of a modern edition of Drug Wars, full of pseudo ironic stunt casting and roguelike gimmicks sounds like a good time, boy do I have a game for you. The only game for you, really. All snark aside I don’t think I’ve ever played a game quite like Crime Boss: Rockay City. It’s a massive swing and a big miss, with enough force to crack the sound barrier while the ball stays in the catcher’s mitt. It’s neither a cynical corporate cringe like Sharknado, nor is it a low-budget dud you’d expect to see a crew of robot puppets heckle. It’s weird, loud and uncanny. Frankly I’m surprised Christopher Walken didn’t show up.

By trying too hard, Crime Boss fails on many points and it's a shame. It has indeed good ideas with its concept of crime management in strategic roguelite, and we want to believe in it, especially with such Hollywood stars accompanied by a neat soundtrack. Unfortunately, everything is only touched upon, and far too succinct. The actors themselves don't seem to feel really involved. If we add to this a technique that can be a bit slow and an old school gameplay, as well as a lack of rhythm and an exacerbated repetitiveness, we understand that Crime Boss has missed its chance. Only the character missions and the 6 mini-campaigns in cooperative mode stand out a bit.

Crime Boss isn't a completely bad game and has some potential in the heist missions, especially in co-op mode. However, it tries to do an awful lot of things at once and doesn't excel at any of them. [Issue#327]

Crime Boss could have been a nice experience, especially since there is no 400 Payday-like. There was clearly a niche to be taken while surfing on that nice cast of actors, but nothing was done. Minimal service, failed service with this. Since between the bad ideas of game design, the absent direction, the failed dubbing and the far from great graphics, it's hard to recommend it. Especially since for less than twenty euros, Payday 2 does a better job, despite its age.

Crime Boss: Rockay City could’ve been a great, original, addictive game filled to the brim with stars from the golden age of action movies. But its concept of a robbery-focused shooter mixed with roguelite elements just isn’t executed well enough. The awful system of enemy spawns, the repetitive missions and environments… And the worst offender of all, a truly horrendous enemy AI. Steer clear!

Crime Boss: Rockay City is exactly what we thought it would be. A turgid waste of a solid central idea with a cast stacked with actors who sound like they’d rather be anywhere else or are just purely hateful. There’s a little delight in falling into b-movie nostalgia, but it’s few and far between. There’s very little here to recommend because very little of it works, if anything at all. Well, the title is fun to say at least.

Crime Boss: Rockay City is an overly ambitious air ball on all fronts, from its sloppy moment-to-moment gameplay to its largely abysmal voice acting – the worst of which sound like single takes spliced in with mistakes intact.

A subpar shooter that is diminished by the money spent on licensed music and stunt-cast voice acting, Crime Boss could be the year’s biggest “if only,” as you can see good ideas let down by poor writing, woeful shooting and a game that feels like all of its cash was spent on Chuck Norris one-liners instead of making the game stand on its own without those issues. A disappointment.

Crime Boss is a game at war with itself. All three modes offer something, but none of them does their specific thing that well. Meanwhile, the characters and writing that surround these missions feel painfully stuck in 2011. And customisation is either limited or random in a way that makes it feel like you never quite have control of your loadout.

Crime Boss Rockay City is a cautionary tale for how to effectively budget a video game, and a prime example of how games need to feel and play well first and foremost. There are good ideas buried deep within this game, and the roguelike/Payday combination is a genuinely novel concept I'd love to see explored in a project with more focus. However, using a voice cast of Hollywood talent past their prime is a choice that doesn't add anything to the game, and it's not enough to distract me from the shallow gameplay that was already done much better ten years ago.

An unlikeable, repetitive, and blandly designed clone of Payday that wastes its celebrity filled cast on an equally substandard script.

Crime Boss: Rockay City is proof that star power isn’t everything. In fact, it’s a reminder that a celebrity cast does nothing for a game when it’s void of anything interesting or fun to support it. When run-ending bugs appear, Crime Boss is miserable, but even when I’m running a mission bug-free, I lay witness to a painfully dull take on organized crime. At its best, Crime Boss functions – I can shoot weapons at enemies, empty bank vaults and warehouses for loot, watch cutscenes with recognizable faces and voices, and grow my empire – but it never captures my attention in a meaningful or memorable way. Instead, it pushes me further and further away, leaving me with no desire to ever return to Rockay City.
