Creatures of Ava

Creatures of Ava has many ideas that work, but not all of them are fully developed. All in all, the colorful mix is ​​entertaining despite some weak ingredients.

Creatures of Ava is what you get when you simply dump a bunch of ideas into a bucket. The mechanics feel disconnected, the story is rote and uninteresting, and the world, while very pretty, looks generic for sci-fi. It’s all been done before and better elsewhere, and sadly the game doesn’t take the chance to connect anything together or really explore anything in depth.

Creatures of Ava is a cheerful game with a deep meaning behind it, something that we are not used to see in the action/adventure genre. Its driving force of a non-violent gameplay, though, brings the scope of its action down, torn by a simply not engaging interaction with the world and its creatures. The story seems to drag the inventive but static gameplay, making the whole experience one that touches the heart, but that you want to shrug off your shoulders really fast.

Creatures of Ava isn’t going to be everyone’s cup of tea. If you are looking for a more relaxed gaming experience with a bit of adventuring and exploration involved then this might be something that you’ll enjoy. If you want something with a bit more depth and serious, perhaps look elsewhere. Of course if you are after a game where you get to hug the wild life… maybe give it a look.

If you're the type who loves exploring every corner of a game world and leisurely moving through a slightly cluttered game world, this could be a great way to pass the time.

It may seem like I’ve been unduly harsh to Creatures of Ava, but that is because there are some excellent ideas here, but the execution has missed the mark. Nothing is wrong with a creature-taming title stepping back from a traditional combat system and embracing a pacifist approach. If anything, exploring this avenue can provide an opportunity to craft a distinctive identity in the genre, but you need to make sure other aspects of the gameplay are compelling. I often found myself going through the motions rather than wanting to see what was next. Strangely, I think the game tried to be too smart for its own good and backfired. It packed too many ideas, and there was little thought on how these mechanics would benefit one another. If you like some of the concepts that Creatures of Ava dabbles in, you will find some redeeming characteristics which might be worth your time. However, I don’t think I’ll return to Creatures of Ava anytime soon.
