    Coromon is clearly a passion project - one that is attempting to revitalize this subgenre of RPGs with knowledge gleaned from being fans of the genre and seeing what other fans have done. From self-imposed challenges to requests for additional quality of life updates, it is done remarkably well. This reviewer recommends Coromon to anyone that is even marginally interested in the monster tamer genre, since it breathes new life and offers a clear showing of passion from the developers. It’s a game made by fans, for fans.

    Coromon is a title full of interesting ideas. Its classic and celebratory setting of the genre it belongs to, hides a substrate of originality that makes the title a valid experience for all fans. The Coromons do not exude charm and peculiarities on all sides, but the set of secondary missions, narrative and team building possibilities greatly increase the overall value of the work.

    The game builds on a familiar foundation but isn't afraid to experiment, an aspect that the slightly stagnant Pokémon franchise should adopt and dig into its core mechanics. Coromon simply bets on variation, and the bet pays off. [Issue#319]

    You might simply write off Coromon as a copy of other games. But think of it as more of a game inspired by previous works. While the inspiration is obvious, various design choices within the gameplay are clear upgrades, including difficulty modifiers and the Milestones feature. If you are a fan of monster collecting games, Coromon is differentiated enough to give it a try.

    Coromon is something that clearly comes from a place of great respect. Pokemon fans will likely find a game that appreciates what people love about the first five generations of Game Freak's franchise, and even when things get a little clunky there's enough for users to enjoy.

    Coromon is a game with a lot of promise that builds on the Pokemon formula. Is it perfect? Not quite yet. I’d say the balance is slightly off in many ways. But it is still a lot of fun. It also feels like a solid first step. I’d love to see a sequel that incorporates new types, dual types, and adds more creatures.

    I’ve scrutinized Coromon pretty thoroughly, I’m not going to deny that. But I don’t think that my decision to do so was unfair. When you’re going to directly compare yourself to something that’s already been established, you open yourself up to the criticism, both positive and negative, that comes along with it. And, truly, there was a bit of both when it came to my outlook on Coromon. Was there a bit more negative than positive? Sure. I think that this game has a way to go (perhaps via means of a sequel) before I could truly say that I’m satisfied with it. But is the potential there? Yeah, absolutely. Between the gorgeous creature spritework and the way that the game simultaneously handles stat distribution and “shiny” hunting via the Potential system, there are some true moments of brilliance tucked away with in this game. And I’d like that brilliance to, *ahem*, shine bright. But it’s going to need some work to get to that stage. And only time will tell if it ever actually gets there.

    Imagine if Pokemon never went all pseudo-3d after Diamond/Pearl, this is Coromon. I'm loving this game so far. I was used to very low standards with all the mainline Pokemon games that I forgot what makes them fun and interesting.
    I really don't know if I can ever play a mainline Pokemon game again. lol.

Like others have said it can be pretty puzzle-heavy at times but it doesn't detract from the experience and it's much more tolerable after the first dungeon. Monster design, graphics, and OST are charming, while it borrows from the Pokemon formula it's distinctive enough to have its own identity and so far I'd argue it does a better job of it than Nexomon & Temtem. The reduced multiplayer component compared to other games in the genre is a slight letdown but it's easy enough to find all the mons without trading & the battle scene is alive and well.… Expand

Why do I need to dismiss 5 separate XP messages one after another, every time, when it could just be summarized in 1 screen instead?

    Controls are a bit iffy with keyboard+mouse. Cannot bind abilities to different hotkeys. Have to hold F for a few seconds, then select ability, then cancel out of screen, and only then can an ability be used. A process that should be instant (with hotkeys) takes 5+ seconds per action instead.

    Potential system is a bit of hit and miss for me. In order to get a "perfect" coromon (biggest statgrow), it needs to have a potential of 21. I have never seen a 21 in the wild but found three 20s. You can use a machine to upgrade the potential of a coromon for gold, however this system is flawed as it will mostly not work (20 stays 20, and removes ability to retry). What this results in is a very tedious process of saving, giving your monster to an NPC, walking around for a few minutes, and then seeing it didn't work. Reload the save and repeat the process a good 20 or so times per coromon. Not only does this feel super stupid, but it's a gigantic waste of time, too. Instead of making things super low probability, requiring reloads and retries over and over, just up the price and make it reliable.

    Story and Quests were cliché but works. Around 34 hrs to complete on normal difficulty. Light puzzle elements, which i found mostly easy but someone who hates puzzles might struggle with. Milestone rewards/level reached too early. Last third of the game or so didn't get any more rewards from milestones. Ending and last 2 areas felt rushed. Lack of side quests or interesting stuff the further you progress.

    There is online play which I didn't really get into because it requires all those time-wasting grind mechanics (plus fruit grind) multiplied by a factor of a thousand. Not my thing.

    Overall, many time-wasting mechanics, made me not want to hunt for a completion. If there was a "fast battleanimation" setting, and bindable hotkeys for overworld skills, and reliable potentification I believe I would have had a lot more fun. It's a decent Pokémon clone, but doesn't excel.    … Expand
