I can understand the resentment of the players about the DLC, since there really is very little "dark theme" from AW here. Basically, this is still Control with large empty corridors with the same enemies, and only a few moments/situations associated with the AW theme. However, I still liked it very much. Basically, this is still Control with large empty corridors with the same enemies, and only a few moments/situations associated with the AW theme. However, I still liked it very much. The DLC gives a whole separate floor-location, a couple of new resources and one new weapon, and each skirmish with darkness is interesting for its game-play(since Jesse does not have skills against darkness, you need to interact with the environment in different ways to go through each such skirmish). I cannot give a high rating, as I expected more, but not just small pieces associated with "Alan's Darkness", but I will not give a low rating either, since it was done with high quality and interesting. Despite some flaws, AWE is a very good expansion that brings Alan Wake into Remedy's shared universe and teases exciting things for the future.

Both DLCs are mainly there to shed more light on the fantastic world of the original game - and to act as promises of future games. You won’t have as much fun actually playing them, though, mainly due to the frustrating combat.

I still really love this game world and the mechanics they’ve developed for it. Using Jesse’s powers feels quite intuitive and powerful and is just a joy. If you haven’t grabbed Control already, grab the ultimate edition and you will get AWE with it anyway. If you already have the main game and want to learn more about Alan Wake and related characters then I’d still suggest it’s a worthwhile purchase.
