In sprawling trenches, you’ll face a growing dread, and experience viscerally the true horrors of war. There is no honour here. Just the cold, harsh truth of reality. In that regard, Conscript is a must-play experience. We must not look away from the face of war.

A fantastic retro survival horror that, despite occasionally annoying inventory management, stands out as unique. Conscript boasts an atmosphere as thick as mustard gas, is brutal and grim, and brilliantly depicts the horrors of World War I. Alongside this, it is also an excellent game that should not be missed by fans of darker titles.

Conscript is a harrowing, immersive survival horror that boldly explores the brutality of WWI. Despite some balance quirks, its oppressive atmosphere, tense gameplay and thematic depth make it a must-play for fans of the genre seeking a challenging, thought-provoking experience.

Conscript is a terrific survival horror that sticks to the genre while tries to do something new: the brutal setting of the First World War and the absence of classic monsters. The result is one of the best indie horrors of the last decade.

A grim reminder of the senselessness of war and the best old-school survival horror game in ages.

Set during World War I and dripping with darkness, Conscript can be frustrating sometimes but its atmosphere, boosted by an excellent soundtrack, makes it worth the time spent. This old-school survival horror is a true gem that should satisfy everyone interested in war-themed titles and keen on flexing mental muscles.

Conscript is a worthy entry into the Survival Horror genre and comes highly recommended. It takes all the ingredients of the genre and marries them to a vital and under-represented part of history in video games to create a standout title that deserves a wider audience.

Conscript delivers a tense survival horror experience steeped in World War I atmosphere, but it may not appeal to everyone. The game excels in creating a haunting and immersive environment, yet its challenging gameplay and old-school mechanics could feel outdated to some players. It’s a solid choice for fans of classic survival horror looking for a unique setting, but not for those seeking modern conveniences.

Conscript is a powerful and haunting survival horror game that effectively combines historical authenticity with classic gameplay mechanics. The game’s setting, narrative, and atmosphere create an immersive and emotional experience that is both challenging and rewarding. Conscript is a shining example of what indie developers can achieve, and it is a title that should not be missed by fans of the genre. While I had a fun time playing, the historical nature of the experience has resonated with me the most, making this an easy recommendation.

A survival horror inspired by the classics of the genre, Resident Evil above all, but with a rather original setting. The sources of inspiration can be felt from the very beginning, which will make long-time fans happy, but the strong setting and some little gameplay variations manage to give Conscript its own dimension.

CONSCRIPT is incredibly atmospheric, with great ideas and loving homages to the survival game genre. While the tension wasn’t quite there for me, I’m sure others will find it in this otherwise incredible game.

Conscript is a horrifying account of the cost of Verdun, and all of its battles and its loss, framed entirely as a classical survival horror game, for all of the good and bad that implies. It’s a punishing, dire take on the war and a unique approach to a genre that I’d mistaken for being creatively wrung dry.

Conscript is brutal and unnerving, with the reality of war ever present, and it's take on the survival horror genre feels new yet familiar.

Conscript may not be in the same league with Singalis, nevertheless, it's a great survival horror experience with well-executed retro vibes. Kudos to its solo developer for excluding any paranormal events or monsters, relying entirely on the actual WW1 horror derived from surviving in the trenches.

A nice 2D action/horror game with good visuals and presentation, but that could have a better backtracking system and a more polished combat.
  2. It can be tricky to assess the balance in a genre that relies on making you feel hopeless, threatened and, yes, a little bit tilted occasionally. Resources feel plentiful, initially, and so I feasted until famine struck and I had to abandon my first run, which honestly just made me respect Conscript more for committing to it. If this isn’t your bag, there’s four difficulty settings, plus options to enable checkpoints and unlimited saves - in saferooms still, but without needing to use an ink consumable. Also included are mainstays like playthrough ranks and unlockable costumes. And - ohoho! - an honest-to-god digital manual, complete with a blank notes page. Love it. The way I just structured that paragraph now necessitates I make it clear I’m not just saying this because of the manual, but: Conscript is good survival horror. Fill your boots. Check for rats first though, innit.
