If we talk about the plot, it's an absolute lie in the tradition of Goebbels. The writers and creators of the game are probably grandchildren of the Nazis, who were hiding in Canada.
If we talk about the game, it is worse than the first part of the management and Graph.
Do not buy it, do not play it, watch out your brain.

The game is created on the basis of Goebbels propaganda posters. Illogical and insulting story led me to the idea that developers greet each other with "Heil Hitler!"
    Excellent multiplayer, by the way.

The game is bad for one major reason the single-player scenario choke-full of anti-Russian cliches picked from all the pseudo-historical books and movies, such as Enemy at the Gates. The rest is just icing on the cake made out of mistakes: unbalanced multiplayer and poor overall representation of Eastern front.

But when I saw WHAT Relic tries to sell us as Single-Player Campaign, I decided I will do everything to stop that shameless from spreading.

The whole plot just written like by Nazi Ministry of Propaganda. Half-human, half-beasts, known as "Red Army", burn they own civilian population alive, murder prisoners of war and each other; their commanders don't care a damn about them, throwing hundreds of them, some even without weapons, into suicide attacks right on German MGs and murdering everyone who disobeyed them.

Soviet soldiers fought bravely for their Motherland and for those European countries that were occupied by Nazi scum; they saved a lot of people, millions of Jews and other nations, from the horrible slaying in Nazi death camps. Many gave their lives for the freedom of the humanity, saving other people's lives. In the end, they met their Allied brothers on the German river Elbe; the war against evil was won, the war criminals were convicted and punished.

Of course, there is always someone in the world who didn't like that. Who supports the other side, the darkness, the racism, the extermination of whole nations.

I knew before that not all Nazi are dead; that some are still lurking around, trying to poison the minds of young people with Hitler's human-hating ideology.

But I never thought that some of them make computer games.

If you are a normal person, if you are really not approve Nazis ideas at least, do not play this game.

It was made by Nazis for potential Nazis, not for you.

+ Blizzards while annoying for some starters are great once you learn to use the surprise moment
+ Infantry has many abilities and is more durable than in most games

    +Co-Op Missions
+ it's not an APM game. You don't have to click all that fast like as in some other RTSs. It's mainly about positioning, availability of unit counters, flanking and things like that.

Overall it's a fantastic game. Relic didn't waste time trying to reinvent the wheel, which is great because the original COH was near perfection. The added features like winter weather hazards, better line of site, and the ability to vault obstacles are welcome editions although the vaulting is a little more cumbersome than it should be. I like that several maps are available in winter or summer versions. The difference is interesting. The Theater of War, AI Automatch, Custom Game, and PvP AutoMatch features add a ton of depth to the game that greatly increase it's replayability. The balancing of the PvP and PvAI could use some tweeking. I find it odd that Russian units require as many resources as they do. It seems that German units should be more expensive, but much more effective. Russian units should be less effective, but much cheaper. This would reflect the reality of the conflict better, but that's not the case. It does seem like Russian units are weaker than their German counterparts, but they still cost a lot of manpower, ammunitions, and fuel. I also really wish that team crewed weapons like HMG Teams and Anti-Tank Guns would turn to face potential threats on their own. There's nothing more annoying than having an HMG team flanked because they won't reface quickly enough especially when the attacking force is clearly visible upon approach. Mortar teams turn to lob rounds at nearby enemies why not HMG Teams and Anti-Tank Guns? If you face a crew it should turn to face threats and then return to the original facing. Having to micro manage every interaction can be frustrating. The single player campaign has been pretty easy so far, but I appreciate the story and cut scenes. Unlike some of the reviews I think they portray the conflict honestly and don't degrade the Russians at all. The Germans were a brutal enemy and survival required the Russians to make huge sacrifices because at the beginning of the conflict they weren't nearly as well armed or as well trained. They basically had to throw bodies at the German war machine to even have a hope of delaying it. I think the game honors the brave sacrifice that millions of Russians made against incredible odds.

Overall COH 2 has great graphics, lots of features, pretty solid gameplay, with some minor balance issues. It's historically accurate and tons of fun. I think it's well worth the purchase price if you're into RTS games. The multitude of features adds a lot of depth. I hope they fix some of the balancing issues and adjust the facing issue with crewed weapons. I also hope they create additional DLC. I could use some more multiplayer maps! Great job Relic!

After a long and very anticipated wait, I was so happy to be able to finally download COH2 from Steam, but I have to echo many of the other comments on here in that it's quite the disappointment.

As a standalone game it's excellent just like the original, however, being a sequel you will obviously expect more and this game really does fail to deliver. It feels like there's actually less units, the maps feel quite small and rather unimaginative, there's no tank traps, no sand bags (only the Russians can build a single sandbag wall thing) so you can't really setup very good defences for weak points or your flanks.

This brings me onto another problem, the population cap isn't very high either so you can't really have very many units at a time. So you can't really setup multiple combinations to protect your flanks against a variety of threats as you simply don't have the population cap to do so. Combine this with very little ability to build defences and you've basically got no strategy just lots of units desperately running about the maps trying to gain lost ground all the time because the AI always seems to send their tanks where you don't have anti-armour units.

I would have liked to see a much larger variety of units, new units )and not just reused stuff that they've clearly taken from the Russian modded version of the original), better maps and also bring in things such as high ground advantage etc.

Also, I'm running an i7 3770K, 16GB DDR3 Ram, SSD SATA3 HD and an Nvidia GTX 560Ti 1GB and yet I have to play this at medium settings, despite it not really looking leaps and bounds ahead of the original. The graphics and animations are improved though.

It's still good fun but very disappointed and certainly not worth the price tag. I'd classify this as an expansion, not a sequel.

I have played many hours of automach AI games and although the other critics cry unbalanced I think the balance is fine it's just that the difference between Easy AI and Standard AI is too much. the progression from simple always defeated AI to almost impossible to beat AI has really taken the fun away. I also think the story mode was too shallow and short. I was hoping that it would be the pinnacle of the game but it seems they decided on multiplayer as the main feature and the campaign mode just an afterthought. I wish I could get my money back as I feel I wasted it. Expand

I feel sorry for Relic because they had a very hard time (THQ gone bankrupt) and COH2 was on the edge to be thrown in the paperbox. Sega bought Relic and they could finish this product but it was a troublesome development... under those conditions I have to say that this game is actually really good.

I'm sure that Relic will improve on this game with new units, new factions and other features... just like they did with COH1. At the moment COH1 maybe is the better game (aside from graphics) but COH1 was released in 2006 and had tons of balance/content patches and some addons, so you can expect it to be a bit better! COH2 will reach that level in the future... but you have to be patient.

    _________________________

Now that this has been said, I actually like this game. I've spent about 100 hours into the online mode already (have not even played the campaign yet) and I totally love it. The early game was a bit unbalanced but yesterday (10th july) the first balance patch was released and they addressed the issues and the next patch will most likely address mid and/or late game. There will be new TOTW missions as well (I finished all TOTW1941 missions on highest difficulty, they where entertaining).

I would give this game 8/10 for its current state but because of all those hater-post I'm going to give it a 10... its really sad how the gamerbase has changed... and NO this review is not bought by relic, as some paranoid users tend to say about other people's opinions on this game.

I started playing COH1 when the first version came out in 2006 or 2007. It was and still is my favorite RTS. I own the original. Opposing fronts, and Tails of Valor.

COH2 should have been an expansion not the train wreck of a stand alone sequel it is. Shame on you Relic for selling out to SEGA. The Sequel, COH2, is a sorry excuse for a sequel and I'm VERY disappointed with Relic

Shame on you Relic for selling out to SEGA.

The Sequel, COH2, is a sorry excuse for a sequel and I'm VERY disappointed with Relic for the game itself and the fact that the day the game was released there was $60 worth of DLC for sale on top of the high $59 cost of the game on steam. Really? You couldn't wait a week or so to try milking the game for all it's worth? The units are completely un-balanced, the maps suck and the game is glitchy. I can play a match vs PC with my eyes closed in COH 1, it took me some time to learn where the buttons are that are very similar to the original game, it seems like they just changed the UI and installed the old game over the new game then added unit navigation to the mini map (Which is the only positive thing I have to say about the game). The user interface sucks, and my PC, which is an over clocked, water cooled, high end home made gaming beast can't maintain 60fps. Is my rig the problem? Probably not. Considering how many games were ruined with #2 I'm surprised that Relic just didn't release an expansion to COH1 for the eastern front. I like the eastern front mod much better than this game and that was a terrible mod at best. Maybe the game will be better in a year or two but Sega and Relic have their work cut out for them.

I have to say thanks for letting me play for free for two weeks though. I know not to buy this game for the total of $120 you're asking for it.

Will I pay $59 for the game? NO!!!
Will I pay $60 for all the DLC? NO!!! I'd pay about $2 for it tops.

It's on my steam wish list because I'm going to wait till steam has one of their sales where I can get every piece of DLC and the game for like $13. If it never goes on sale I just won't play it.

    - Graphics still on the first release of 2006, in highest settings this game is unplayable even on a high end pc
    - The gameplay without a proper setup of function keys is absolutely rubbish and I believe after thinking of some other SEGA releases, that it seems to be a big internal SEGA issue.
But: It is still Company of Heroes and I have to wait what sega/relic will do on the update front for this game. I like it, but I am not happy with it.

What happened during the development? Did the developers get lazy and decide to just take the original game and change the characters? Don't turn into the strategy version of CoD. This game had so much potential, but they screwed it up, but they went "Hey here is your game, this is so good... HAHA suckers! We got your money now!"

But when playing Company of heroes 2 you get a feeling that the game is a kind of hackwork to earn money. In other words it is unfinished product. But when playing Company of heroes 2 you get a feeling that the game is a kind of hackwork to earn money. In other words it is unfinished product.

    Why?

    - presence of sync-errors and numerous lags during multiplayer matches. It is a shame that after 7 years devs could not (or do not want) to eliminate this problem tailing since part 1.

    - a bad optimization. Even with top-level PC the game will nor run smoothly.

    - balance issues, the game is not balanced for 3 vs 3 and more matches.

    - lack of an annihilation mode and opportunity to play this mode against random people. The lack of opportunity to select maps you want to play.( in this respect we can see some kind of degradations compared to vanilla CoH)

I hope Relic will take these vital aspects into consideration and will save the game from dying out

Compared to its predecessor, Company of Heroes I, it is a step up in graphics, animation, sound and several gameplay elements, but a step down at much else. Doctrines are dumbed down. Unit weapon stats are gone. Realism has taken a turn for the worse (e.g. homing AT-nades which always hit the engine with same max distance as Panzerfaust or crazy tank-ramming which always hits and destroys the gun of the victim tank). Unit abilities seem half-baked. And the user interface has been messed up did Relic delegate it to an intern?

The multiplayer ranking ladder from the predecessor is gone. Instead, we have an experience system a lá Battlefield or Call of Duty out of place and really ridiculous. Of course, matchmaking suffer because of this.

To make matters worse, the marketing department at Sega has worked day and night to packet lots of different DLCs to maximize revenue from already paying customers, which their cherished fan-base of course must pay for, even though they obviously have been developed alongside the main product, and adding nothing really new so far (e.g a new doctrine with a new combination of already existing commander abilities).

In conclusion, the best WW2 RTS out at the moment, a ton of fun, but with lots of improvement potential.

Story wise, CoH 2 captured the essence of WW2 battle between the Soviet and Germany. The battles were among the bloodiest, and there were moments where Soviet was just as bad as Germany, especially with Stalin's Order 227. Battle of Kursk, Leningrad and Stalingrad was mentioned and captured, not perfectly but enough for us just to imagine the nightmare on the Eastern Fronts. Battle of Kursk, Leningrad and Stalingrad was mentioned and captured, not perfectly but enough for us just to imagine the nightmare on the Eastern Fronts. Furthermore in contrary to popular believes, the game doesn't trying to reflect Soviet as evil nations (despite there were some instances that strongly suggest one), but merely the desperation of the of war (using conscripts for example that includes every able men and women).

The campaign has a fun gameplay although the story part of the game feels a little bit weak, however, we all knew how the story goes in all games like these Allied forces won so there isn't much use trying to put extra gimmicks by further elaborating on the story that we all pretty much knew since primary school years. Therefore, for those seeking for story, RTS genres like this game won't have much on that department and thus, stop criticising it.

Putting that aside, another impressive feat was how much detail was given on the units, particularly the tanks. An accurate description for each unit was provided and this gives immersion to the game that is not really available for other RTS games. Although the AI might have a slight issue in path-finding, with a little micromanagement, the battles seem flawless.

In addition, controlling a couple of Tiger IVs and VIs smashing through enemies' defences feel satisfactory. Or ordering artillery barrage using leFH 18 to soften up defences before rolling in flemmenwerfer to capture enemy territories, only to be burnt alive by Scorched Earth and barrages from Katyusha rockets. Soviet's IS-2 and T-34 tanks lived up to their names as a few that can stand against German and their panzergrupp.

This game is not about steam-rolling. Armored division are great but without proper support from infantry, the AT (anti-tank) weapons will make a short work of the panzers, more so when entrenched behind enemy lines. Infantry also have variety between the two factions, Soviets have cheap but relatively weak infantry compared with the Germans, so different strategies are required when deploying large numbers of units. Also, Soviet's tanks are heavier and slower to fire compared to German's more agile tanks.

The 'Theatre of War' mode fills the battles that were not covered on the campaign (by year, the first is 1941) and will continue as DLC presumably for the following 4 years until 1945. Despite what others might have said about the price, those DLCs are small price to pay for the quality of details provided by Relic.

In short, the attention to details are what made this game worthwhile.

    +Atmosphere of Eastern Fronts
    +Accurate details
    +Theatre of War

    -Multiplayer issues (lags)
-Some units might feel slightly underwhelming or overwhelming
    -Huge learning curve in micromanagement

All of the german units were just imported from coh 1 with newer textures thats just a cash-in move seriously and many cool units are missing from coh 1 like the knights cross or the assault troops...

Also the russians are a way too weak the t34 could easely smack any cheap german tank and in this game its terrible. The germans are really overpowered in this game. The infantry deals less damage than the first coh 1 and there isnt any paratroopers its just a shame.

Russia lost about 30 million people in world war 2, half of those were soldiers, also have you people heard about the battles around Stalingrad? the Soviet Union lost 1,129,000 soldiers during that battle, Order No. 277 meant that if you tried to retreat you were shot, no matter the odds that were against you, Order No. 270 meant that even if you were encircled by enemy forces if you tried to surrender you became a traitor and you family was executed. This is how things were so everyone stop complaining about that. Now with the performance issues i am running the game on a gt 630 4gb v-ram, It is running fine at 1680x1050 on higher image quality, highest on everything else but AA, which is on low, so i don't know what is wrong there as i am getting a solid 30fps a second. Also stop with the zeros, a game with a zero is an unplayable mess with no ui, 16 bit graphics, etc, not a decent if not good AAA title. This game is not equal to aliens colonial marines. Overall i believe this is an improvement over the first one, a more streamlined command system and a very well designed true vision system. I can not give this game a 10 as there are still crashing issues and the music plays through cut scenes and other moments which it is clearly not supposed to be there, overall this game is worth the price and is a worthy addition to the series

However, there are a lot of things I feel that are wrong with the game; I don't think the flaws should impact your decision to buy it.

The game definitely feels incomplete with the lack of sandbags (only conscripts can build sandbags, which have a set size and do not allow you to make a continuous line like barbed wire; They are frustrating to place, and still are difficult to have a squad be completely in hard cover. The Germans have ZERO sandbag emplacements and their only somewhat defensive emplacement is a bunker. The lack of tank traps and sandbags are very aggravating, ESPECIALLY when the game has virtually no natural hard cover (compared to the first one). Oh, and since you can't build tank traps, you can't prevent tanks from destroying your sandbags.

They have done quite a bit of fixing to the balancing of units, but it's not enough to change the fact that Russians are an infantry team, and Germans are an armoured team. The German command trees are terrible, and have ZERO special infantry units.

Snow maps are absolutely terrible, and the whole blizzard thing should be completely redone. It just pauses the game if you go infantry, and since you can't build tank traps, vehicles run over the firepits all the time. They get destroyed too easily and still cost 100 manpower.

The bulletin/perk system is silly, considering 9/10 times, the perks that you'll unlock have virtually no impact on the game. 2% increased accuracy?; completely unnoticeable....especially when you have to play dozens of games to unlock it.

I don't want to rant too much, especially since I started off this review as a rating of 9, then I gradually started realizing more and more flaws with the game.

    HOWEVER...

The game is new, and still has a LOT of time for improvement and perhaps they'll add more emplacements with updates. I'm also excited for when they release some expansion packs, which will hopefully have more units. Despite everything negative I've said about this game, I would still recommend it, and would definitely buy it.

Even worse AI than in the first game, ruined the UI, many units have become obsolete because of imbalances (ussr vs wehr snipers), less specialized units which means less tactics, weather makes units harder to recognize, graphics generally is not much better at all, timed blizzards break the flow of the game and are annoying, tanks don't have the same "feel" from the first game, sound is bad. These are just the things that I though of right now. COH1 will remain a better game and I sure intend to play it as long as they'll keep their servers up.

I really enjoy this game. I played the first CoH and I think CoH2 is very similar just everything is more balanced and more enhanced. I like this RTS because i am not a crazy fast 120 clicks per minute type of person and I still have to time use all my abilities and strategy. It is really about reading your opponents styles and countering them with the men you have. This is my favorite RTS.

I knew it was beyond suspect playing through the beta and not enjoying it. They simply took the old game and swiss cheesed it, removed sweet features and content. The only positive thing I can mention is the variable weather but even that leaves a bit to be desired. Its more like snow blizzards that come in cycles.

Unfortunately, this game is a letdown, compared to the CoH 1. Less units, removed commander trees, less maps. And most of all uninteresting and quite political campaign, clearly anti-soviet, that shows all soviet officers as beasts, who sent soldiers to die and executed them every single day.

SCORE: As a 1000+ hours veteran of CoH 1, I rate this a solid 6. I'm not going to play that childish game of rating based on other player's votes (10's and 0's). Metacritic needs to come out with a rating system that requires a driver's license I.D. to register so that accuracy isn't thrown out the window for nerd raging children.

ALL AROUND: The "nothing has changed!" reviews aren't as stupid as they come across. What people are saying, and I agree, is that the base game never evolved. Instead, what they did was take the same system and the same crap AI with it's same aggravating maneuvers, and "fixed" things that weren't really broken. Sure, the interface is cleaner and easier for newcomers to utilize. What is glaringly obvious is that nobody from the development team was tasked to find the problems with the original and fix them. You'll still have tanks getting stuck on a shrub, cascading a traffic jam into all of your other units, causing many more of your tanks to turn 180 degrees and show their weakest point to the enemy, getting nailed by anti tank fire in the behind while they throw a fit over a tiny land object. Foot-soldier units won't calculate that they are in a huge clusterfrack and decide to take a 3 second detour around the idiots in front of them in order to complete a move order.

The workaround for poor A.I. is still the same: micromanagement. If you didn't plan ahead the perfect point-to-point path each and every unit should take, then you're going to have to force your tanks to reverse with their gun's forward on your own for every single jammed unit. Essentially the commander of the entire front is out of the office driving tanks for the army while the rest sits around clueless.

GRAPHICS: This game was clearly developed with the same technology and requirements of the old version, thus, the developer decided that updated machines will take place of them optimizing their game. I'm left to question -WHAT?- exactly was done with all of this development time?

GAMEPLAY: This is merely CoH 1.5, a reskin and rehash of the original. There's some added gimmicks thrown in to make you think you're playing the next generation of RTS, but really all your going to be playing is a regurgitation with a bunch of things to slow down and pin your armies in order to change the pace of gameplay.

---------: If you've played the original CoH with any of the incredible modifications that the fan base churned out, you'll be sad to find that none of that talent was used to create a real CoH 2.0. We already had these doctrines in the CoH mod, Eastern Front which was FREE! We already had these graphics in the CoH mod blitzkreig... and it ran a hell of a lot better than Company of Heroes "2".

Don't buy this game until its had at least 6 months of fixes. If you're a CoH 1 fan and didn't preorder for whatever reason, you'll be bored of this game in minutes anyway. Even waiting six months, I'd wait some more until expansion packs and features that have been removed from the game are available for major discounts or free with the main game. CoH2 is just another franchise grabbing easy cash from their solid fan base while really offering nothing new that truly is worth $60.

Just Imagine what you can and will get if you spend your money elsewhere...

Also this game has a lot of small details like on Snow maps how troops will stop moving for a second and warm up or how they react to on coming fire now. Relic Entertainment cleared the hurdle the original game set as far as I'm concerned. Tweaking, remoulding and teasing out the underlying systems of the original, and then layering things like cold weather, may not set the world on fire like the original Company of Heroes did but it's still a solid strategy game and with the right support and continued release of content I can see it living on for quite some time.
