Although the single-player missions suck, with ridiculously stuipid AI bots, the multiplayer is really fun. You can try to win for your team, drive around in a tank, snipe, defend your base, etc. This variety of gameplay makes this game the best I have played. Buy it for the multiplayer.

One of the best games of 2002. And perhaps the best in the series Command & Conquer. Superbly realized the idea of turning real-time strategy into first-person shooter.

    Absolutely, mindblowingly amazing.
People generally complain about bugs. there aren't any bugs which make the game in any way unplayable, so they are fine.
Single player? The AI is absolutely stupid, i admit. But this game's single player is probably one of my most enjoyable single player experiences. It deserves a lot more praise than the call of duty campaigns in the least.

Multiplayer? Sheer epicness. It's like you're playing out an rts game from an fps perspective, and you can be any unit you want amongst the usual 30+ people in the servers. It requires a lot of teamwork, and the satisfaction you get when you finally blow up the enemy base is exhilarating.
I wish there had been a renegade 2! was really looking forward to it!
Also, the multiplayer community if still very active, for anyone who's wondering :)

Single player was okay, I played through it a few times; however, the multiplayer is amazing, if you get a good team together the strategy the game requires to win just makes it so much fun. Even being on the losing team is fun as you struggle to defend your base. If that's not for you, Renegade was easily modifiable and you could blow all sorts of time into changing the game play. U can easily just join any clan, leave a clan, search rankings. Very cool. U have all your buildings and basically your goal is to destroy their base. Sounds easy? Well its not. Virtually the only way to navigate the map at all is with a tank, or a humvee, or something of that sort. The maps are just too big! This quickly becomes vehicle combat and not deathmatch. It really falls flat and totally extinguishes any replay value. Could of been a lot more, a lot btter. Im ashamed this game. Expand

The initial idea was extremely cool to see all the buildings and units as we could experience in the RTS games, but the graphics are so ugly that made me nauseated after playing for a while.
Usually your goal is to kill everyone that moves on every map that is really not genre-defining...
Or you need to plant a bomb to destroy a building (the same as in the RTS just in first person view like controlling Tanya in the RTS game).

So the only unique side of the game is switching from the RTS perspective to first-person view. WOW!
I'm surprised of seeing so many positive reviews, because it is a "bad" game and I consider myself as a hardcore gamer (like 2000+hours with Skyrim, 4000+ hours in CS, and being a player for almost 30 years since the C64 era).
it was fun though to discover the buildings from inside and using tanks from the RTS game.

    For me:
    - the graphics are extremely outdated (it was the same when it came out) that made me nauseated
    - the controls are good
    - the sounds are OK
    - I guess I did not use music, therefore I can't describe

I guess I played through all games of the C&C universe! but I can't honestly recommend this title to anybody. Sorry, if I hurt some players' feeling.

How can I forget that line from Havor talking to Kane? Coming from Red Alert and Command and Conquer along with Tiberian Sun, when this game first came out, i didn't know what to make of it. Since internet reviews were still not a thing at the time, box art and a lot of risk-taking meant that if this game was bad, I get burned in spending my school allowance savings. But its low-cost, back in 2003, and the fact that Westwood made it gave me a hint that this was going to be awesome. More than a decade later, I'm still glad I took that risk. Renegade is all about bombastic action and fulfilling your commando fantasies as a C&C player. because that is what it did, it was the answer to the question of what if a player could ride the awesome RTS vehicles as an FPS gamer. It was the answer to that question of how would it feel to be that guy that I ordered around to fight like crazy in the RTS. Renegade succeeds in most if not all of these things. The best part, is that the game has character. It didn't try to be realistic like the first Red Alert, it just did its own thing of good vs. evil characters with a lot of character and crazy thrown in and to my delight, it did it well. Havok's crush on Sakura often leading to disasterous things, evil scientists, riding a mammoth tank and going psycho with it, that annoying viceroid coming from that soldier you killed using a tiberium weapon and the crazy fun of trying to hopelessly dodge an Obelisk of Light by bunny hopping. The single-player campaign had an impressive and relatable storyline especially if you enjoyed the C&C RTS. The multiplayer however, was far more enjoyable as it allowed you to fight other players, buy (transform) into specialized infantry, buy and ride vehicles and even nuclear missile and ion cannon beacons that you can plant on enemy bases to destroy them because trying to blow up buildings with an assault rifle only is madness. Teamwork was necessary and it was rewarding. One of the best Westwood titles and yet another promising franchise that will be fondly remembered by its fans. Can someone please start a kickstarter campaign for C&C Renegade 2!?

Renegade was Westwood's attempt to enter the first-person shooter market by taking the universe of Command & Conquer and placing it into a new perspective. After 15 years, Renegade still manages to remain popular .

The Single player at best, is a good few hours of play time. Taking on the role as Captain Nick Parker (Havoc), you tasked with rescuing three scientists from the Brotherhood of Nod, with many plot twists and turns along the way. There are 12 levels to get through, each in varying length and difficulty. If you want a true challenge, playing on Commando Mode is the best option, but with the AI's impossible accuracy, tough body armor, endless reinforcements, little health and ammo pickups, it's best to pick Soldier for a more balanced experience as Recruit is too easy to provide a substantial challenge.

However, where Renegade thrives is in it's unique multiplayer. The primary goal is to just destroy the enemies base whether you are Nod or GDI. You are allowed to use tanks, soldiers, beacons, etc. to do this and with the active modding community, some maps even allow for vehicles and units that were not present in the original game. The multiplayer allows for teams to collaborate and form strategies to take down the enemy base so you'll never have to worry about going solo. The servers are only active from Friday-Sunday and usually confined to two but with up to 50 players possible, it makes for great battles.

For a 15 year old game, it certainly has it's faults. Graphics are dated, getting stuck and glitching out in missions remain a problem, and enemy A.I. in the single player is trigger happy and surprisingly stupid. As this game hasn't made free anywhere yet, buy it for the multiplayer or if you are a C&C fan looking for a good First Person Shooter C&C experience. If this community can get more active, this game can get more recognition for what it achieved in 2002 and how that achievement still holds up today.

Imagine a long-time Trekkie's glee at being given the opportunity to walk around the original 60s set with the cast; Renegade is the virtual equivalent for the C&C fan.
  3. If there is a drawback to the game it lies in that the AI is not overly strong. Considering that the enemy is engaged in a firefight of enormous proportions, running straight into a gun, or standing immobile with backs to the approaching shooter seems a little ridiculous.
