15 years later CMrae Rally 05 is still a pretty decent rally game.

Physics are alright, but with some issues. There are a few stages in locations like Spain, Greece where suspension goes haywaire and starts glitching out, no matter your setup, it feels like youre lacking ground clearance, even if you max it out on your setup. Overall handling has decent weight behind it and the sense of speed, once youre up to it, is really good, often even somewhat terryfying, but very satisfying indeed. Weather, time of day options offer variety, however there is an issue with wet weather, in the sense game doesnt make it clear what kind of a wet weather it is before racing. Heavy, light, just wet road ? So you have to make a guess when choosing which wet weather tires to use. Also all tires use same texture model, a nit pick, but annoying still.

There arent that many locations, but youre provided with decent amount of stages in each of them. Stages are very well detailed, for a 2004 game atleast, and offer good diversity in their road type design and are fun to race on. Cars are also pretty well detailed for the time period of the game's release. Sound design however is quite sub par across the picture. Car selection is quite adequate. Car damage simulation can be a mixed bag.

If youre looking at older rally games to try out, dont be afraid to give this one a shot.

I am not really into racing games except the arcade ones so keep in mind this review is not written by an authority. I think there are some physics issues and sometimes your car will come to a complete stop when you hit the side of your car to a tree branch etc. Also, you don’t see other racers so I find it hard to immerse myself in a game where you are racing against “invisible cars” only to find out your ranking after the race ends. Colin McRae Rally 2005 looks good, sounds good, but it wasn’t really my cup of tea. Expand

I think that CMR4 was slightly better. The graphics were good, but simple the gameplay did not keep me engaged for as long as the previous part.

My wish list for future iterations includes night racing, variable per-stage weather, working in-car gauges, and crowds that aren't 2D pancakes, but I can't say I've played a more satisfying racing game all year.
  2. That rock is the rocking arcade rally game "Rallisport Challenge 2," which offers better visuals, a more tangible driving sensation and arguably the best online support ever seen in a racing game. That hard place is "Richard Burns Rally," which has established itself as easily the most realistic (not to mention difficult) rally game. In the wake of these two triple-A titles, Colin McRae 2005 comes off feeling a little too tired to remain the pinnacle of rally gaming.
  3. Plays just as well as its console cousin, with the additional advantage of some gorgeous graphics.
