But I decided to stick through it given the fact this has such decent ratings on Steam. I'm glad I stuck with it, the game itself is very creepy (sketchy is probably a better word), strays away from jumpscares for the most part, and really establishes an atmosphere pretty quickly.

Personally I hardly hold this up on a pedestal like many others that have played it; it's good, but it's not that good, if I were to give it a proficiency title I'd probably call it "unrefined". The story and idea behind the game is creative and solid, which I suppose it has to be because this is all it's pushing it's way through rating systems with; the art and audio definitely isn't what's landing this good ratings.

The audio is an important part to touch on, since it's basically 80% of the scariness factor. Ambient creepy sounds and sketchy, computer-edited voice acting is basically the scariest parts of the game, despite a couple scenes with visual scares, though those are unsettling at most (it's hard to be spooked by a drawing alone with this skill level of art).

All-in-all Close Your Eyes is a decent game, nothing super special but nothing to overlook. I think it's a good experience despite how absolutely dull the gameplay itself is: needless to say, if there was no horror theme to this game, it'd be about a 2/10. But the game is scary, mostly atmospheric, and mostly established through audio, so headphones are a good idea (which it tells you to do at the beginning of the game). It's free, it's short, and it's also visually unaesthetic, but that's okay, the poor art actually emphasizes the sketchy mood of the game. Now if you were to tell me that's on purpose, I would not believe you. Being able to draw bad on purpose is something only extremely comfortable artists can do, and it's noticeably different from ACTUAL bad drawings, which is what Close Your Eyes is comprised of.

Scary, short, bad art, good story, dramatic, sketchy, creepy, free. Try it out.

This review contains spoilers, click full review link to view. For an atmospheric and free horror game, Close Your Eyes is a Steam 2015 PC RPG game for you to play for a rainy day. Close Your Eyes was a gem that I had stumbled upon from scrolling through the “free-to-play” section on Steam, requiring no money and a highly rated game, I decided to play. From the start, Close Your Eyes presents a foreboding dread and disorienting environment that boggles your mind, leaving you to second-guess your choices throughout the experience. Playing as a murderer on death row, this game teaches you to consider siding with the villain out to end your suffering than the character himself, that is, if you choose to feel this way. Close Your Eyes is a choice-driven experience where characters can follow your own path that you pave for them. The characters, including the main protagonist, all are sickening in their own ways which leaves you to think of who to side with. Unable to side with any of the characters you have to wait and try to find answers to puzzles to be more on your own character’s side. As a role-playing game, you could explore, replay and even achieve a total of 8 different endings in the game’s run-time. Classified as a Indie-Psychological horror RPG, the game manages to easily live up to just those titles alone. The attention to detail, voice actors, dedication, and even occasionally mind-boggling puzzles all leave you with satisfaction over the dedication and caring put into the project itself. The slithering change in the art-style with drawn setting and background and existing textures used from the RPG-maker, the game seems to throw in a mixture of art forms to draw you in. The games run-time varies from 0.4 hours-- to 40.3 hours on record, I managed to finish the game multiple times from a 2-3 hour binge time-span. Close Your Eyes is a highly recommended game that requires no money compensation, and only a Steam account. If you want to be able to play an older PC game then I highly recommend Close Your Eyes, the time will be worth it. Full Review »
