Circus Electrique combines tricky turn-based combat and circus management to create a wonderful game for those willing to learn all the mechanics.

Circus Electrique has a unique vibe, inventive art, and a thoroughly detailed devotion to its steampunk setting. For patient gamers with a love for stats and carefully managed decisions, the engaging combat will be icing on the cake. For some players, Circus Electrique might feel overwhelming, with one or two (or more) mechanics too many. There can be a lot of information on screen, and even more behind the scenes. The presentation is generally fantastic, but players used to simpler games might be surprised at how much work goes into running a circus.

The extreme amount of minutiae in Circus Electrique's simulation and tactical combination may seem overly complicated to some players, and to a point they wouldn't be wrong - the game could certainly stand to have a few less materials and there are moments it feels like the game is trying to do too much. However, one of the best parts of the game is it's only as complex as the player wants it to be, managing to be both complex yet accessible. Alongside the fact the game offers an always-available guide to all of its features, players can very well enjoy the game on a more surface level and still get enjoyment out of it. On the other hand, there are certainly players who will enjoy contemplating the perfect next move and ideal circus show lineup for ages, and Circus Electrique offers that style of player the complexity they desire in spades. Whether players are looking for their next strategic obsession or just some steampunk circus fun, Circus Electrique offers an experience almost every type of tactical fan can enjoy.

Circus Electrique is truly a unique experience compared to the range of games on offer today. With a mix of several different genres, it somehow manages to blend them together in a way that makes logical sense and create seamless gameplay. However, the caveat is that there is a lot to learn as it isn’t a simple casual game. Both management and tactical RPG systems require a lot of strategic planning and knowledge which can become overwhelming quite quickly if you aren’t careful in following all the directions. Despite this, Circus Electrique delivers a gorgeous environment to play in alongside a diverse range of performers to pick from. If steampunk is your aesthetic and you enjoy a challenge, Circus Electrique will give you an experience you won’t soon forget.

Circus Electrique is a perfect balance of circus management, dungeon exploration, and story. Each aspect works perfectly with the other, and the result is a fun and satisfying experience. Unfortunately, the slow pacing and large amount of information show the limitations of the perfect balance. While everything works well together, it never goes beyond a good experience. It’s like a middling circus performance; it’s fun to watch, but it isn’t remarkable.

Where the game really falls flat is with its main character and supporting cast. Very little to no development and none are worthwhile playing with. Graphics are a mixed bag with a old school grainy film effect. Its not bad but could be better. In the end, the poor story and bad characters will make you lose your interest sooner rather than later. Full Review »
