Although this pays homage to industry legends like Dark Souls, as well as The Legend of Zelda series, don't come in Chronos: Before the Ashes looking a worthy successor to these - not even a game that plays like Remnant: From the Ashes, which is actually its sequel. Those who try it out with such expectations will be severely disappointed, especially if in need for something with 100+ hour replay value. You are advised to judge it by its own merits, and discover what is actually a great, immersive ARPG, with simple, yet very good combat, visuals, atmosphere, and story.

Chronos: Before the Ashes is not a groundbreaking twist on the formula of souls-likes, but delivers a rock-solid package of gameplay and rarely gets frustrating. The only real issues are the almost non-existent story-telling and the missing map makes backtracking a little tedious.

The varied, but technically tame action-adventure appeals to Souls-like beginners. It also offers a refreshing ageing system and puzzles.

Chronos: Before the Ashes is a solid action-adventure that doesn’t overstay its welcome or try to be something that it isn’t. If you’ve played the VR original, you’ll find quality-of-life improves, but this is still the same challenging adventure that you’ll remember. The gameplay is tight, responsive, and consistently fun; there’s nothing more I could really ask for from an action-adventure game.

  1. But as a PC game, Chronos: Before The Ashes feels like a cash in, with nobody bothering to ask “does this really need to be ported over?”. Without VR it loses the magic of being in your living room knocking shit on the floor, and exposes the game as a very lukewarm soulslike.

    pros:

    the music is really good

the level design is super awesome every level looks amazing and authentic

    enemy design is cool

    the puzzles are really good

the story is very good and answered most questions that remnant didn't answer

    cons:

    very clunky gameplay

    AI is super dumb

no guns WTH i know its just a normal version of the vr game but they could add something even a crossbow would be nice

game is super short took me 6 hours to finish it

except for new weapons you cant find any armor in the world and change which is very weird for a souls like game not to have

in conclusion although this is a 2016 vr that was remastered and made normal it lacks a lot of elements such as firearms or they could add and some extra content of some sorts that game as is , is a cool prequel for remnant but i would only recommend to buy it on a sale for a low price so my final score to Chronos before the ashes is a 6 out 10

The story is interesting maybe more around the end, when you finds notes etc...However the narrative felt cut and incomplete at the end. The fighting is very basic and is not especially well done. You can have trouble with the fighting lock, and some inputs are repeating themselves. The puzzles were fine and the most fun part of the game. The lack of any maps made things confusing at times. You can upgrade your stats, and your weapons but only one works well, it's the sword. No real armour to speak of. I give it 68%. I don't think it was a bad game but the quality was variable. And it's also a short game of 6-8 hours max. Full Review »
