6/10. The weapons don't feel responsive. Fighting isn't intuitive. There is far too much weapon variety. The game is too competitive to have such sloppy gameplay.

Interesting content as it is the predecessor of 'Mordhau' and many other great medieval fighting games. The gameplay truly makes 'Chivalry: Medieval Warfare' worth it. GraphicsInteresting content as it is the predecessor of 'Mordhau' and many other great medieval fighting games. The gameplay truly makes 'Chivalry: Medieval Warfare' worth it. Maps are as terrific as varied, the access to the Steam Workshop contributes to enhance the game as a whole. Weapons feeling is awesome and the way you manage to obliterate your opponents is definitely satisfying. Graphics are not that terrible despite the 2012 release. Game modes are numerous and I found the 'team objectives' the most interesting. Interacting with environment feels great. The few customization there is is okay.

Unfortunately all these great features are cancelled by major flaws. Where to begin?
    - The level of toxicity of the community? Once you passed level 15, you can't go back to regular 'noobs' servers and you have to play with hardcore gamers, a bunch of try-harders who each spent more than 1,000 hours on 'Chivalry' and will destroy you over and over, sometimes instantly from your respawn point.
    - The detestable classes system? There are four of them, each with some interesting mechanics but surely you will soon hate vanguards with their insane range and scope in addition to their gigantic health bar and defense, and archers which remain on top of the fight to grind some easy kills here and there.
    - The inconsistent FPS? Even if I always played with a decent ping, I kept having major lags and bugs. And troubles like these can easily make you die.
    - The ranking system? You get points when you kill. You can do all the damages of the game, if you don't manage to kill opponents the game says you deserve no point. That's why I love objectives so much because you can easily see who is playing cleverly and who doesn't. Plus the vanguard and knight classes can one-shot kill so they easily steal your preys when you inflict less damage (as a man-at-arm for example).
    - The friendly fire? Is always on. And you can't prevent allies to get right in front of your blade during melees -> you kill them and get penalized.
    - The customizable colour of characters? Some funny kids decide to customize their characters with the colors of the other team, which prevents us from noticing that they are enemies. Yeah, I'm talking about you yellow guy. I'm going to find you.
    - A little story mode as a tutorial would have been amazing.

A game so fun, my neighbors thought my name was "LEEROY JENKINS" for a couple of months.

A guilty pleasure, simple of fun :
you can the traditional modes of PvP shooters,
    but translated in medieval fashion.

Headshot with a crossbow ? Nice...
Slicing some head with a two-handed sword ? Amazing...
Pounding your unlucky adversary with a big axe ? Awesome !

    Still a classical !

A very low quality fighter which doesn't have any level of strategic depth and very quickly falls apart from a tactical perspective. Learning the necessary dexterity to play the game is a boring chore. The game also looks very gross and ugly, with nothing interesting whatsoever beside the simple gore-y appeal factor. Avoid if possible.

As a kickstarter backer, I liked almost everything about it. The melee combat felt good, the sound design and graphics were great considering the game's age. It was my go-to game for stress relief and most people would agree that there is something relaxing about chopping some heads or limbs off from time to time. The only thing that I disliked was its toxic community, yes Chivalry: Medieval Warfare has one of the worst communities you can find in a video game.

I've had read some reviews in the past about people abandoning the game after level 15 and my assumption was that skilled players overwhelm the high rank servers. My assumptions proved to be correct, but the thing is I do enjoy games where more skilled players have a clear advantage over the so called "noobs" and if the game is enjoyable enough, it only motivates me to get better. The main problem with Chivalry is not the fact that low rank players are "owned" by players with hundreds of hours of gameplay time. The problem is what you need to learn in order to play better....

As soon as I landed on the high rank servers (the game doesn't let you join low rank ones when you reach level 16), I started seeing other players doing moves that I had never seen before, basically butchering some other players. My initial thought was to learn how to do those same combat moves. I checked some youtube videos and that's when the game was instantly killed for me. Over the time, players found hit box and movement glitches which -if you use them well- either cannot be blocked or give you a clear advantage. It still does require skill to exploit those glitches, but unfortunately the very existence thereof killed all the immersion and enjoyment I get from Chivalry. If you want to know what I'm talking about, just search keywords such as "reverse overhead", "rainbow", "dragging". It is a shame really, designing a game with obvious glitches and not fixing them, because there is a player base enjoying their time from the exploitation of such glitches. It is a shame, because Chivalry would otherwise be a great game, for what it is.

This game is a masterpiece. The combat is incredibly challenging but also very fun to use and learn. You can use the movement of your mouse to dodge swings from a greatsword and kill a heavily armoured knight with a dagger if you're skilled enough, and boy is it a good feeling. People moan about the mechanics being broken... They're not broken, you're just bad at realistic melee combat. :^)

Floaty combat, unbalanced classes, poor controls, and poor map layouts all lend to what make this otherwise great game unfun.

The combat in Chivalry is by far the largest selling point of the game. It's fast-paced, chaotic, and very satisfying… when it works. Unfortunately, the game has many an issue with hit detection, class imbalance, animations, and controls. Most of the game's weapons have animations which do not line up with gameplay function. One of the classes, the vanguard, has a charge attack which is especially guilty of this. When the attack begins, the character will just start floating forward quickly in an unpredictable manner because the animations do not line up the character's motions. High-skilled play devolves into the vast majority of the players using only two classes: the man-at-arms and the vanguard. The former because it is able to dodge attacks very easily. The latter because its attacks are very hard to dodge due to the aforementioned problems with the animations not lining up with gameplay function combined with the class's high amount of reach. The controls are also incredibly floaty. Combo attacks often don't work for no apparent reason, and the man-at-arms' dodge ability is also guilty of this. Movement feels sluggish to respond, almost like walking while waist-deep in water. It simply doesn't feel natural.

The maps in Chivalry are quite varied, both in scenery and in play. There are towns, castles, bazaars, forests, aqueducts, open fields, arenas, etcetera. Some maps revolve around simple fighting, others have objectives like besieging castles or poisoning water supplies. Most of the maps play well, but spawn-points on many of the maps seem poorly placed, and as a result, objectives are often lost before defences can even be set up. A few of the arena-style maps are far too small, with spawn-points all over, and no offensive or defensive lines can be formed due to this, which kind of undermines the point of a team game.

The graphics in Chivalry are decent. They're not impressive, but the art direction is coherent and the style works. The sound design is definitely better than the graphics. The sounds of weapons and shields clashing is especially satisfying. The voice acting is excellent. Both it and the writing is campy, which makes it both easy to laugh at and easy to get behind. The music varies between very good and forgettable, but it all fits well with the style of the game.

The game also has micro-transactions, which are all cosmetic as far as I can tell. While the ones I have seen have all been tasteful and coherent with the art-style of the game, some of them cause issues with team identification. Given that the game also has issues with that when players are covered in blood, it does end up taking a toll on the ability to play the game.

Another issue I have to report is that the game uses the Unreal engine, which absolutely hates players who do not have a completely stable connection. If you're not on a good, wired connection, you'll essentially be unable to play the game due to abhorrent rubber-banding. This is especially problematic with Chivalry, as it is a primarily melee-combat-focused title.

Finally, the game possesses a fatal flaw in its design. The developers adding a leveling system in an attempt to prevent new players from getting stomped: you gain experience by doing well in the game and eventually increase in "rank". Unfortunately, what ends up happening is, due to the fact that the community is now artificially divided, servers with A. acceptable ping, and B. decent player count, become essentially nonexistent once you've reached rank 16 and can no longer play on the "newbie" servers.

Without considering the "rank" issue, I'd give the game a 5/10. It has okay combat, good map variety, decent graphics, good sound, and decent music, but certain players may have connection issues that they wouldn't experience with other games, combat is floaty, hit detection is questionable, animations are dissonant with gameplay effect, some maps have design issues, there is class imbalance, and the rife amount of cosmetics can cause team identification issues. After factoring in the "rank" issue, I'm forced to give the game a 0/10, as the game can essentially no longer be played past a certain amount of play-time, which is completely unacceptable. The developers need to spend more time on ensuring that the content is quality before moving on to the creation of mediocre DLC or gameplay-impeding micro-transaction content.

Now, the players, if you get to play with all players with low ping values (30~60) the game is mostly nice, otherwise people teleport... and if you try to hit an afterimage of a guy who's actually a few steps further, you leave yourself open for counterattacks and die. No fun about it.
Finally, gamemodes, there are a lot (a lot with text glitches which render incomprehensible the actual objective too) and since the community is quite a bad one, the experience, especially in more complex game modes, is really poor/bad.

Don't get me wrong, there are also reasons to like and play the game, like medieval warfare, pretty nice sword/axe/spear/bow/... fight, few interesting game modes, but for me they are still not enough to keep me playing this one.

Often against the good players, you see their body TWITCHING in unhuman ways on speeds unimaginable; to kill you with blows you never see coming or can anticipate.

That, and the abundant glitches and hitbox bugs that can be exploited make this game a big FAIL.

The gameplay is very fun - who wouldn't want to experience warfare in the middle ages?

There are so many strategies and skills to learn that it takes a long time to actually get good at Chivalry - just like with an FPS like Counter-Strike. I think this is one of the hallmarks of a well-designed game - that it is hard in a way that isn't cheap, but takes time to master.

My only criticism is the lack of maps and gameplay modes.

Chivalry is slightly… bipolar. The spectacle of a duel (especially if the two opponents are seasoned veterans) can be spectacularly breath-taking, a complex choreography that one can only marvel at. Blocks, feints, slashes, back-steps, side-hits: despite initial impressions, this can be a truly intellectual game of tactics, requiring high skills, observation and deviousness. On the other hand, the spectacle of a massive battle of fifty warriors can be ridiculously chaotic: especially if the players are inexperienced and go for blind “hack and slash” tactics, it’s more like a metal concert mosh pit than a battle for glory and honor.
