I bought it on Steam Sale a month ago and tried it for about 5h. When i realised that all my progress was reseted due to "a rank up bug caused by steam" (No it is 100% fault of incompetently developers if you have a closer look at the rest of the game). So well today i loaded the patch and... Yeah well the catastrophy begins:
-NEW helmets to buy for real money
-"fixed" OP vanguard class(nothing has changed)
-The hit detection is even worse than before
-90% teamkillers and noobs spamming left mouse button attacks and turning around like fools
-MASSIVE FPS drops with a PC i can play BF3 on Ultra, just to give an example(Not that the game is even looking like it was released 2 years ago... It is just ugly as hell with bad anti aliasing, awful blur effects and sometimes awful textures)

You think I reduce the game to its graphics? No, not really... graphics are not everything, i know, but they could distract from the awful gameplay... People who say this is a SKILLBASED combat system have no idea of what skill is or they are just fanboys... Hit detection does practically not exist... No matter if you attack from above, left right or stab... Blocking is completly random... the fact that you can block warhammers, waraxes and huge greatswords with the tiniest daggers the game offers doesn´t make it better! But not only the blocking is random, so are the hits! Sometimes you do 360 degree all around dmg with your OP vanguard Claymore and hitting everything in 3m range and then when stabbing at an enemy in 30cm in front of you nothing happens, or he blocks your overhead swing with the fists! Then running around you and hopes for some random hits stunning you and hacking of some limbs... You think i am not skilled enough? Well, I tested this tactics with 3rd person view myself... You are completly invincible dealing 360° all around dmg and you dont even take much dmg because when you see an enemy strike you jump that the strike hits your feet what deals practically no dmg. After that you continue spamming LMB attacks and killing people...(Even the dumbest hack and slay games have more mind)
There is also no limit for the annoying archers... Crossbows are able to oneshot half of the enemies... bows shoot very fast and so on...

Beside of the COMPLETLY AWFUL combat "system" (just spam LMB attacks...) the game modes are boring too because you have seen them in 529xxxx games before... Last man standing(The last who is alive wins), Team Deathmatch, Deathmatch, Duel (1 vs 1) and the ultra small MP "campaign levels" are boring after 5h. Then there is nothing more to do because there is no single player or level up system for a character or real customization ( Yeah you can buy ugly helmets for 5$ and change colour... "ironically WOW"). You can level a few weapons that are used for the only 4 classes you can change from... No RPG elements, No real upgrades or anything what gives motivation...

I won´t start with the missing balancing now because i could continue the list of awful and dumb things in this game for a long long time...

Concluding i gave the game 0 points because it has absolutly no motivation over longer time, no story, no singleplayer, mediocore multiplayer, fu***** up gameplay and a mass of bugs! The developers doesn´t seem to care about anything and do not answer to support requests. You can find glitches hacks and bugs jsut everywhere...

SAVE YOUR MONEY!!! Rather burn it so it makes a little warmth... Everything is better than wasting your money on this crap called a GAME... This is an alpha in which you have to pay for new elements brought with patches for an absolutly broken gameplay...
    ->Zero points for ZERO fun...

A must buy. It's a real time action game. Requiring some skill and training in order to be really good at the game. It has 4 different types of classes: Man At Arms, Knight, Archer and Vanguard. They all have their different skills for each type of class which is really balanced.

The blocking is really fun as you have to meet the tip of the enemies weapon with your shield or weapon like it would be in real life, so it takes some skill and at the same time is fun. Killing someone feels very satisfying as you are sometimes placed into situations unfavorable to you, yet come out victorious. Such an event happened where I was up against 2 warriors and 3 archers against just me. I ended up taking out both warriors and an archer before the other 2 killed me. I could have possibly won but didn't all because I didn't have a shield! So if you are good enough, skill does makes the difference! It's possible to take on a small group by yourself if you are smart enough! And that is just the best feeling to pull off stuff like that! The archer class is pretty fun too and gives you a break from melee combat if you've done it for a long time. It takes a bit to get used to but its neat to make a snipe from far away while at the same time saving a friend! Overall I feel it was well worth it, the combat is fun. The classes seem unique for the most part. And from visiting the forums, the developers really seem like they are going to update this game and stick with it. This game has a LOT of promise in my opinion. And if the modding community really wanted to, they could make some amazing things from this. I think this game was 100% worth the money. I don't really see much of the things some people are giving this a bad score for. Either they updated it to fix these issues or its personal opinion. For being a new game I think it has a very nice start. Expand

I'm also playing in italian, and some sentences are translated, while others not. I would have honestly not having the "italian" option, then (but steam setted automatically). About attacks etc, I feel everything is a bit buggy. To me, this could have been a really great title, if only coders had spend little more time on it, before actually selling the game. . My best compliments to the 3d artists and animators (animations, to me, looks great). I'm giving this opinion on the current version of the game, so I'm sure the title will improve. Expand

Chivalary is one of those games that can be played by mashing buttons, without regard of situation or without even knowing what you are doing. Same goes for any beat em up game.
Does that make the game bad? Not at all. When first playing the game, you will die. Often. Mostly because you end up inside the mobfight and there is one guy swinging the biggest and nastiest weapon he could find.

Given some time to play this, you will find tons of ways to counter these (as again, with a lot of beat-em-up games). Only at this point, will the game reach is potential. It does lack any visual customization or a way to discern your friends from other teammates, but i'm pretty confident those things will come in the near future.
The visual style is grim and dark. Just the way it should be.

Great looking, and a ridiculously fun game, ruined by the masses of bugs that make it very hard to play the game at all. I'll amend this review when the game is fixed. ** Bugs have now been mostly fix (not completely, but well enough), making this purely a very fun game which I reccomend highly!

Would be so much more fun were it not so buggy right now. As it is, it's more of a paid beta, than it is a game ready to be released. And mind you, this is playing on servers where I have a 30-50 ping.
In addition, your strikes get nullified way too easily. I understand this is trying to be realistic, but in reality, your attacks don't always have to follow the same exact plane of attack, regardless of surrounding variables. These variables include terrain obstacles around you, such as trees, rocks, or whatever, and teammates. You could switch to an overhead attack, or stab, and still find your attack nullified. The game is entirely too sensitive, and it becomes extremely frustrating to play. A little leeway would go a long way to making the game more enjoyable. I'm good at controlling my attitude while I play a "game", but this game constantly has me quitting in frustration, due to situations where I simply do not feel in control of my character, nor the situation itself. If you're looking for a medieval combat simulation, or anything even close to that, buy Mount & Blade Warband. This game simply wasn't ready for release. It's just too buggy, and needs too many optimizations to be a fully enjoyable experience. This is besides the fact that it runs like crap.

Summary: I picked this up for about £7, but, honestly, it's probably worth mroe like £5. It just feels like a poor, clunky mod. If it was faster and had better graphics it would be worth more.

    Positives:-

    Lots of people play it.
It can be brilliant when people play as a team.
It does feel quite medieval in spirit.
The development team clearly want to fix the bugs that it has (which is a lot).
Apparently they will release free updates, too.

    Cons:-

1.Firstly, and most terribly, the game is slow-paced. And not in a good way. Just it takes you ages to get anywhere, it takes ages to swing weapons, and it takes ages to spawn. Even the menus are slow! (No, I don't have a slow computer.)
    2. The hit detection is terrible. People will hit you when they are nowhere near you or not even facing you. You will stab someone quite clearly yet "miss".
    3. It's very simple. There is almost no depth. War of the Roses had tonnes of depth from swing mechanics to where body armour is, to having to use certain kinds of weapons against certain kinds of body armour. This is hit/block/hit/block. Don't get me wrong, you can actually be skilled at the old hit and block, and timing is key, but that doesn't mean there is depth. There are a lot of skilled people at this game.
    4. The graphics are TERRIBLE. I can't believe people think they are good. The textures are AWFUL, to say the least. In all honesty, it looks like somewhere between a Half Life 1 and a Half Life 2 mod. It makes me wonder whether they imported their textures from the original mod.
    5. Bugs - there are a lot of them (even after the new patch), though I am confident the development team will fix them.

If they released an HD texture package (could happen; it has for other games, and the devs seem to really want to make this game great) increased the quality of the hit detection, and made the pacing faster, then I think it would be a very fun game. Just, right now, it feels like a mod, not a fully-fledged game.

I really wanted to like this, too!

This is just so much fun, It feels so good to decapitate someone, And though there isn't a lot of skill involved in some particular game modes it's still very fun to play, The only thing that i don't really like is the archer class, That's probably the only thing that is better in War of the Roses (in my opinion)

This is a brutal, unforgiving game with a considerable learning curve. Once you top the curve, however, it is an incredibly entertaining and rewarding game with many hours of potential play time. The defects are minor and the development team seems to be pretty involved in the well being of Chivalry.

I'm horrible at it, but they've struck the perfect spot where its challenging and rewarding without feeling frustrating. It succeeds because when I die, I always feel that there's something I could have done, if only I'd been better. One other thing, this game is surprisingly funny. Once you understand the classes, and weapons, and how spacing, timing and swing speed can be manipulated by footwork and mouse movement, it becomes an incredibly nuanced and engaging combat system with lots of depth. It's one of the few combat games where you can get the feeling of an extremely satisfying and hard won victory, and it rewards actual skill. Yes, you can be affected by luck during FFA's and large battles where its hard to avoid a swing or see behind you, but that isn't a product of the combat system, rather the successful emulation of the fog of war and chaos on the battlefield. There are issues however: One is the archaic server browser and the buggy connections and frequent inability to join games with friends. Lag is an problem on some servers (its not apparent if it's my connection or the server software, or the client itself), and it can and will get you killed at times. Another is the actual lack of servers due to the awful console only dedicated server. However, both of these should be addressed by the devs in due time, so i'm not too worried. Finally, I personally don't think the bots are all that useful once you get past the basics... it would be nice if there was an advanced AI to really practice dueling and technique against. More maps and maybe weapons would be great as well, it seems like both are a bit light, even for an indie launch. (or the game is just that good that i want more)

All in all, I can look past the teething issues and see a really fantastic combat experience that rewards skill with a satisfying war cry and the blood of my enemies. TLDR: Great game with easy to learn but hard to master (yet rewarding) mechanics, early server issues are forgivable, could use more content and better AI to practice against

I love the combat even if I get a bit frustrated at my sword passing through someone without dealing damage because, when you chop the whole arm off, you will laughing like a mad (wo)man. On the really bad side, there's the archery system, which is horrible, and can mostly be summed up by "Random spam of arrows for 10 minutes", most of the time. A lot of glitches on the hitboxes, especially when trying to parry a blow.

But I think the biggest problem this game has, is the extremely high learning curve required. The game doesn't have a lot of content, and you'll certainly abandon it before being any good on the battlefield sadly.

You can hulk around wild swinging with a two-handed sword; you can run circles around people slicing them up with a one-handed axe; you can gracefully manipulate the distance between you and your opponent with a long reaching polearm; and so on. Defeating your opponent means assessing their style and doing your best to counter it. The depth seems subtle, but it's truly deep. But you can also disregard the technical aspects of combat and run in like a mad man. You might not conquer the game, but you can still have fun doing so.

The game could use some additonal modes for lasting appeal. But the core of this game--its combat--is highly refined and satisfying. The style of the game is spot-on for gritty high fantasy. The gore is shockingly well done. The animations feel fluid and natural. The atmosphere of the maps is well-polished and foreboding. All of this creates a high level of immersion. When you get sucked into the combat, you almost feel like you're really there. Dying in this game--especially after you've just made an error leading to a gruesome death--is an intense experience, and almost feels life-like. As you fall to the ground, blood pouring everywhere, you feel more than bested in combat. You feel like a sack of flesh, uselessly plummeting into the soil, questioning the purpose of your entire life. Okay, so I'm being a little melodramatic. But you get the picture. This game is awesome and is highly recommended for anyone looking for a fantasy combat game with the competitive spirit of first person shooters.

How do I describe such a seemingly incredible title? Well, I'll start with one word; infuriating. Here's the thing about class-based multiplayer: IT MUST BE BALANCED. Here's the thing about class-based multiplayer: IT MUST BE BALANCED. In Chivalry, balance is non-existent, each class can be triumphed so easily, even by their own counterpart, as long as that player is vigorously pressing the Swing button. And that's another thing: blocking is pointless if someone just keeps using the "strategy" I mentioned before, since none of the shields can offer enough protection to block anything other than the typical default Swing; Stabbing and Overhand Swings will ALWAYS breach your defenses. But what's even worse is the Stamina system, probably the most poorly implemented feature that would've worked in its favor. Jumping drains your Stamina, successful blocks drain your stamina, normal swings drain your stamina, Sprinting halts your Stamina regeneration (not to mention its rate of regeneration being slower than it needs to be; if you lose even half, you're pretty much dead), these elements were a great concept, but because each action uses such a large portion of your Stamina, it becomes a struggle to even run away from the battle. Health can also regenerate, but will also halt while Sprinting, and does so at a rate slower than that of Stamina's. Classes: Archers kill everything from hiding spots, and Vanguards have too much reach and dexterity with their Spears. If you're not one of them, you will die every time you get within their range. The other too are what you'd probably expect in a game with class-based multiplayer: one is a fast, slightly-armored swordsman, and the other is a heavily-armored, slow-moving "tank." There's nothing much more to these other two classes. But despite the holes still left open in its gameplay, there are some moments where the game does shine. The story; well, there is nothing to it, just that you are a warrior in one of the two opposing factions. The tutorial level, or short single-player introduction of the game's key elements, introduces you to the game's key components, namely the combat system, so that you don't start flailing about like an idiot. The graphics, however, are stunning, and can draw you away from the major issues that most people tend to neglect and tolerate, even I was awe-struck by the amount of detail put into every environment, weapon, and piece of armor. Looking up at the beautiful blue sky with a natural glare out of the corner of your eye, whilst standing in the middle of a breath-taking landscape, is an experience that many games don't often simulate. And it can only be triumphed by taking a moment to step outside on a bright, sunny day. The music that accompanies each a brutal an unforgiving battle, can seem a bit out of place at times; hearing a soothing melody alongside a poor soul's head being smashed to bits, is not very pleasant, when you think about it. The sound effects are also well implemented, despite there being no sound from your armor itself when you are hit. From swords clanking, to raising shields; it all sounds superb, yet eerily realistic. Voice acting also played a part here, and for the most part, it is very well executed. Your instructor in the single-player tutorial gives off each line of dialogue with great emotion, but some of the NPC's which you may hardly hear, much less even see, don't fill their roles with the same amount of effort. Each player can also speak with several pre-determined words and phrases, such as a "Battle Cry," or even a "Thanks," which are all given with strong strong emotion as well, making it seem even more plausible that these could have been real people going to war in medieval times. All in all, this was a great game, but some of its potential was wasted when it came to the actual combat mechanics, making precise and carefully thought-out strategies seem unnecessary, and render button-mashing newcomers the dominant race. Still, I enjoyed this title to the degree of wanting to play it again, and I will continue to do so. I recommend this game to anyone who wants to enjoy something more than just guns and realism, rather, something with beauty and ambition. Expand

A multiplayer experience that offers a realistic point of view of the Medieval melee battles. It's not fit for everyone, but if you get past the glitches and the high difficulty curve, you'll find an enjoyable and addictive game.

Chivalry is slightly… bipolar. The spectacle of a duel (especially if the two opponents are seasoned veterans) can be spectacularly breath-taking, a complex choreography that one can only marvel at. Blocks, feints, slashes, back-steps, side-hits: despite initial impressions, this can be a truly intellectual game of tactics, requiring high skills, observation and deviousness. On the other hand, the spectacle of a massive battle of fifty warriors can be ridiculously chaotic: especially if the players are inexperienced and go for blind “hack and slash” tactics, it’s more like a metal concert mosh pit than a battle for glory and honor. Chivalry is Quake to War of the Roses' Battlefield, and those seeking a faster-paced bloodier experience will undoubtedly prefer Chivalry's type of steel. [March 2013, p.65]
