Unfortunately this is literally a hack and slash game. A couple of hits and you die. Should have gone fantasy, because realism sucks in this game.

They are trying to create something akin to MMO shooters, but the need to be in close combat at all times just means that if you are outnumbered, you will die. You can only defend against one attack at a time, basically, so two or more attackers will kill you quick. Respawn is similar to other shooters, it just depends on when you die and where the counter was at at the time. Then there is a long boring run back to the battle. Why this sucks is because at least in Red Orchestra or COD you fight from a ranged distance. This is also why games like Elder Scrolls don't thrust you into endless waves of creatures attacking all at once. At least in fantasy games you have the benefit of magic for defense and offense as well.

The game also plays in a windowed mode. This wasn't exactly a deal breaker for me, but it was annoying. The animations were okay, but timing blocks, which is a major part of this game, is sluggish at times. Basically this is all in the mouse. Your movement is still WASD, but everything else uses all your mouse buttons. If you don't have five mouse buttons, do not even try.

I bought this on sale at Steam for $10 and I would really like to demand my money back. Like a few other reviewers I was surprised at how high this game scored. My guess is 90% of these reviews came within the initial purchase and few hours of play with the hope that it would get better. Leveling doesn't do much for you but get you new weapons to swing with. It gets very monotonous after awhile, click 1, click 2, block, click 3, click 1, block.... Oh yeah and die like every thirty or forty seconds.

This game might be better with a group of players who are all on headsets and communicating, but all I saw was a bunch of people running around swinging at everything, including their teammates. Like many shooters with friendly fire, count on some moron constantly running in front of your swings/shots as well. As a 4-5 layer co-op effort, this game could have been awesome. But thirty fighting each other in very close quarters, even outdoors, just becomes a chaotic nightmare. Anyone who thinks this is how medieval wars took place is just flat out crazy. There are no skirmish lines in this game, no waves of archers followed by foot soldiers, and no artillery that I saw (but perhaps that was a different type of battle I didn't play). Instead, they call it realism when thirty people with no coordinated effort charge in and start swinging like crazy. Viking pillagers were more organized than this.

The biggest problem I saw here is that there is no commander, be it a King or a General of some sort. A good system would have been to have a team leader that controlled who, which of the four characters (Archer, Man-at-Arms, Knight and Skirmisher) and how many would be available in a pool that you have to choose from when you respawn. I saw games where there was little to no archer support, and knights were just wading into battle all alone, instead of being backed up by people with pole arms. Every man for themselves doesn't really work in these types of "slashers," but how do you avoid it if there isn't even the slightest semblance of a command structure. Often you have to defend three objectives, such as your catapults, which seemed to be unused, but there is no way of directing people to spread out appropriately. This may seem like an issue of the people who play it, rather than the game itself, but I can see no real way to remedy this without some sort of command structure. What's really annoying is that if you know anything about strategy in warfare, this game is just going to tick you off with every battle.

I had eyed this game suspiciously for few months, and after reading the reviews here I bought it on sale. Like I said, I would pitch a fit to get my money back if it were possible. This is basically one of those online games you play in a browser converted into something that looks like a professional game. I think some of these complaints are partly due to the people it attracts. Serious gamers won't be messing around with this. It pales in comparison to games like Red Orchestra and even, dare I say, WOW (which I absolutely hate). If you want to play a pedantic time waster for a few days, pick this up. Otherwise I would spend the money on a single player medieval themed game, or some sort of RTS if you are absolutely jonesing for medieval fighting. The positive reviews of this game are misleading, If they use words like "epic" and "awesomeness" it's probably best to stay away. I certainly learned my lesson about how to read these reviews from now on. It's a lowest common denominator issue IMO.

This game is sort of stupid, but in the Garry's Mod way, as in it's a stupidly fun time! The game is absolutely hilarious, with the various knights shouting and flailing their swords everywhere! The only downside is that it's buggy, but that's not even close to a deal breaker. Recommended!

Its a good game, not great still needs some work. Amazing visuals for an indie game, but game-play is not smooth. I would say try the half life 2 mod first before you buy this (the mod is better) but if not, this is a good replacement if you are tired of shooting bullets.

Anyone who thinks the combat is 'unique' or that it takes 'skill' is delusional. The poor game mechanics and terrible hit detection alongside animations and unimaginative objective based games make this a 1 out of 10 at best. Poor hit detection and terribly implemented combat has been mistaken for 'fast paced high skill requirement'.

If you can get the game to work you have a tremendous wealth of multiplayer combat, most of which will be spent fending off your own team mates. This game is packed with team killing.

I want to love this game, and I play it over and over again in the hopes that just once I'll leave a session happy. They only tend to end in frustration, however.

It is the most well thought out, put together game I've played in a long time. Personally, it has infinite replay value and only gets more fun. There is blood, guts, exploding heads, fisting, and requires a ton of skill.

I recommend this game to everyone I know who enjoys video games, and I've heard no complaints yet!

Fun and challenging. To play well in this game it requires teamwork, patience, and timing. If you don't want to learn how the weapons work, or don't want to have the patience it takes to win these fights as most one on one fights take a few minutes, you wont like this game. It takes a while to get used to but its worth putting in the time.

Chivalry: Medieval Warfare is one of the easiest games to jump in and have a blast, but the learning curve for new players is very hard. Most new players swing left click over and over again without thought or strategies; this is a mistake. Hell most of the reviews that were low score were made my "gamers" that never understood the true versatility of the game.

Most of these reviews were written before the major updates to the game. The devs have added to the 3 main attacks(right shoulder overhand, horizontal swing right to left, and a stab), now you can swing horizontally left to right and swing an overhand from the opposite shoulder. This adds depth to the game and makes defending and attacking more versatile. The beta was full of glitches and problems affecting game play, 90% of them have been fixed.

I'm level 35 with 450 hours in the game, i know this game forwards and backwards and the ability to adjust you swings by slowing them down and speeding them up with a movement of your mouse is one of the greatest innovations in a game in many years. Hell you can lean forward and backwards at the waist to do a matrix lean back dodge or duck under an enemies swing. This adds so much to the game in the way of learning curve. Not only do you have to hit someone that is dodging under and around your strikes but you have to dodge around there swings as you miss over there head and they come in at close range to hit you while your still swinging your whiffed strike.

This is a real time strategy game with twitch based game play, but you wont see all this till at least 10-15 hours in the game. Normally around level 15 is when people start to "see" the animations of the characters as second nature and react instantly to the swings. I have never played a multi-player game that was harder to master and more rewarding to learn in. There's nothing quite like pulling off a new move in combat and getting it to work at the dismay and of the enemies in the game.

There's a lot more to the game then people think. For example, when preforming an overhead attack(alt overhead is best) the swing starts behind you. If you jump at your opponent and turn 180 degrees around(back to them) and swing a overhead in the air while leaning backwards you can hit your opponent with your back turned to them. This sounds a bit ridiculous, and it is, but its not easy to do(100 hours of toying with it for it to work right and look smooth). I gave this example to show that the reviewers have NO CLUE how in-depth the melee combat is. Our group of player, |MonK|, has formed its own style in the game were we do 360's while jumping and swinging, mind you that it does not look glitched or break the game by exploit. It is very hard to do and takes way to much practice, but the rewards of being able to preform a perfect 360 to reverse 180 to 360 while swinging and hit them is all worth the time.

THIS GAME IS HARD TO MASTER!!!! TRY TILL LEVEL 15 TO GET A FULL VIEW OF THE GAME.

In closing i would say buy this game, its only 25 bucks and that is very cheap for the gameplay it offers. There are lots of games made by AAA developers that cant stand toe to toe with the epic gameplay and utter controlability of this game.

    Hope this helped,

And that's the most important thing in the game! Many times my spear thrusts were going through an opponents chest without scratching him when he doesn't have a single problem beheading me. Or blocking enemy's attack while doing as you're supposed to, aiming at the enemy's weapon tip. And yet my head flies somewhere into the bushes. And it happens all. The. Time. It is extremely frustrating when you're sitting on the edge of your seat, trying to get that hit in with a supposedly long-range swing but nope, you gonna get absolutely mutilated. It is very hard to understand your weapon's range, as on numerous occasions it seems like it should connect, yet it doesn't for some reason. Other than that the gameplay is extremely hectic, lacks any tactic or strategy (gogogo in group zerg rush rush rush hurr durr kekeke), feels lacking. I find it a waste of money...yet I keep returning to the game, hoping that maybe it's my skill or ping or planet alignment. I for one haven't played many melee game before. I was a Cod2 and Cod4 gamer most my gaming experience. Chivalry caught my attention by steam hosting one of their trailers. This multiplayer-only game features no single player story mode, although you will be given the option to play offline with BOTS. Chivalry is set in the fictional medieval world, where two armies; the Agatha Knights and the Mason Order are battling each other for control. The Mason Order was once a part of Agatha, however they has split into a newly formed order who wish to take Agathian’s lands. The player will be given the choice to side with the Order or the Knights. The story is told through its multiplayer objective games, where either side is given the chance to attack and defend.
As I have found, this game is highly addictive. My playtime can be set out in a ‘highly detailed’ chart.
1 hour Wtf? How did he? Why am I dead?
    2 hours *Escape* *Quit*
3+ hours Wtf? How did I? Why am I alive?
The game’s gruesome melee system is a graphic delight; nothing is more satisfying then killing someone and then attempting to slice off the ragdoll’s head to see it rolling down a hill. The game is running on the Unreal 3 engine and looks very pretty, although some of the scripted sequences need some more work. For example when a wall has been torn down with a Ballista (or any other more appropriate medieval tools( I don’t do too well with the thinking)) you can see the wall slide down into the ground with rubble sliding up as well as the many particle effects used to hide this, clearly not well.
Now finally the combat, this is the biggest review scoring factor. The game uses a real-time swing system; the player will get the choice to choose 3 types of attacks; the swing, the overhead and the stab. Each attack available will be given the ability to modify it location mid swing, enabling the player to cut behind a shield or through it when the game doesn’t like me, did I mention the game dislikes me? Four classes will be available to the player with different traits and abilities, each balancing speed, weapons and health; one of these classes is an Archer, is very out of place in this game. The whole game uses a melee system; the addition of archers just seems to be used to appeal to medieval enthusiasts. For a group of players looking to ‘clan-it-up’, all they need to do is move around their enemy to poke at this back until someone wishes to steal a kill.
Chivalry is an extremely addictive game, it uses an unlock system to drag the player through the archer’s crossbow for the sweet, sweet ‘clean’ weapon selection menu. The game is currently filling an empty market of multiplayer sword fighting, which means this is the best you’ll get; although that’s not a bad thing.

The combat is wonderfully skill based, the game play is fantastic, the community is generally good and the graphics are more than adequate. The worst problem I have with this game is that it is far too glitchy. Hit detection is horrible, blocking doesn't work sometimes, and when you hit an enemy that is attacking, it may or may not cancel his attack, even though it's supposed to. Spamming right mouse button to block when being attacked is a common reaction, however if you press it more than one time during any part of your block, you will immediately block right after that. Some weapons are unbalanced, but that's to be expected of any game. I'm not saying the whole game is bad, though. The soundtrack is one of the best I've ever heard, better than the music that large companies make. The voice acting is handled professionally, and the missions are creative and fun like blowing up ships or breaking down medieval gates. The graphics are beautiful, depending on your settings, however the controls could be improved a little bit. Problem is people think it's simple, so they complain a lot when they die, instead of seeing the tactic that brought them down.

This game is very immersive, it has some good blood effects and gore. The combat, which some lesser people claim to be luck-based, is in fact a very deep system with many tactics. The thing is, if people are too set on games being simple, they will feel it's about luck when they get killed by another better player using special tactics. You can hit people around the shield if they are not careful, and blocking is harder or easier depending on which weapon your enemy uses. The armours in this game also looks quite realistic and good. Other games always have these seriously weird armours with things sticking out everywhere or just armours that look like they weight about as much as a freight train. The ambience is very good, there are way cries and death cries echoing through the battlefield. And also a messenger shouting orders or reports to the presumed commanders further away. Animations aren't that great in some cases, but the swings are generally really good, it feels like there is weight behind them and you can't just randomly swing around, because you'll get tired. There is a good diversity in game modes as well, you can play through the "story" by going team objective, or just FFA or TDM if you would feel like it. There is also a special duel game mode where everyone gathers in one room and duel each other one by one, which is a great way to train duelling. There are also a quite interesting factor in the game, friendly fire, meaning you can accidentally kill teammates. This adds a new level of difficulty to the game, which in my opinion should be added to almost all games, it makes it more punishing to miss and hit your friend. Games like Battlefield and CoD could benefit from this in all of their gamemode, the only downside being that people are too stupid to avoid friendly fire. To counter this in Chivalry, which many people are too stupid to realize, is to simply use trusts and overhead swings whenever friendlies are nearby.

The guys working on this seems like good guys, like almost no other game companies are nowadays, they release new content and patches, and they aren't trying to make extra money by releasing a DLC which you HAVE to pay for to get these new things. They recently released a content update in late January together with a patch. I am seriously looking forward to new content, unlockables and more. If I had to guess, I'd guess they will release weapons and different armours soon.

Many people also claim they have lag issues, this is because they choose servers that have horrbile ping, because they have absolutely no understanding of servers what so ever. If you pick a good server and have a decent internet connection, then you will have no trouble. There might also be some unsupported routers that have created problems for some people. This is a big reason why many discard the game outright and write a bad review here, they are too lazy to fix lag issues. That is why they feel the game is unresponsive, choppy and "unfair", it is literally only because of ping, that's how ping works. There are no choppy weapons, this is because of lag only.

As for people claiming M&B has a better combat system... Yeah, swinging wildly with little to no weight behind your swings and never tiring seems perfect. They are just blinded by their on fan-boyism. I've played M&B, I love it. Chivalry has a more skillful and better combat system though. Duels are amazing. The only way M&B or War of the Roses, can be better is when you have a large group (clan or guild) that works together, which doesn't happen often. WotR's problem is that it doesn't have the maps designed for large scale, group or line warfare.

The only thing that Chivalry doesn't have, that WotR does have. Is customization options, in WotR you can create your own unique armours and coat of arms, which is really cool, since you basically have your own "house" you're fighting for. The problem with this is that many players tend to make goofy looking armours and such, destroying the awesome feeling of the game. WotR is also set in a later period it seems, as their armours look like they're from a later period of the middle ages. Bordering on 16th century armours, I'd say. There's far too little chain mail, which is sad, it was widely used during the middle ages, with only a surcoat over, something both games lack. Then later, it was used as further protection together with plate armour.

In conclusion, I love M&B, I love Chivalry. M&B is really fun with a giant group and lots of players, but Chivalry has a more skillful and immersive combat system, where there is a lot more techniques than M&B has, and War of the Roses.

In other words, it is kind of the opposite of the "easy to learn, hard to master" motto Blizzard has; Chivalry is hard to learn, easy to master.

On the surface the game is simple, but when you really get into it, those simple mechanics are hard to master. That is the mark of a good multiplayer game these days in my opnion: easy to learn, hard to master. The controls are intuitive, logical, and easy to manage. The unlock system isn't a chore, and is straightforward: each class gets three different primary weapon categories, and in order to unlock the next weapon you simply just KILL! There are some glitches in the game, like getting caught on pieces of wood. The physics could be better and the game sometimes has lag issues. There are only 4 classes: Man-at-arms, Archer, Vanguard and Knight. Each requires a different playstyle from the next. Aside from the glitches and mechanics issues with the engine, my only complaint is the game is TOO simple. It needs more to it, but the combat is great. Archer is hard to master as it should be. Since I am loving this game I'm going to give it a 9, but it's more of a 8.5 or 8. I expect Chivalry to influence similar games in the future. Expand

It looked promising and innovative, it truly did, oh boy was I in for a surprise. I have always loved games involving duels, old school weapons, tactical melee fighting and quick paced combat; Chivalry: Medieval Warfare certainly delivered that, just wrapped in a deformed package of minor bugs here and there, player to player verbal abuse and a feeling of uncompleted-nes. I have a creepy idea: Torn Banner Studios are in league with Apple marketing department, because the games grip on the players are astonishing. If you ask or talk to players about Chivalry´s bugs, be they minor or greater; all bugs impacts the gameplay for all and inevitable changes the outcome of matches and the game experience of the player.
From time to time i found myself wondering if skill was actually relevant and needed, when random events dominate. With a sour taste in my mouth I could, time after time watch myself be pummeled on the spot by players exploiting the spam of attacks with fast weapons. The deal here is, you are stunned whenever you are hit, weapon damage or size makes no difference. Blocking these attacks drains your stamina rapidly, counter attacking is out of the issue, even with the fastest weapon in the game you are at a handicap when trying to lower your shield/weapon to attack, you WILL be struck and NO moves will save you, no matter how much skill or lack thereof you have. The same applies to when the game loves to bug, so that even when you with agility *dodged* your opponent and achieved a position facing his back, the game will most likely glitch and make that attack count so that you WERE hit anyway, and your skills does matter little against the un-logical.
This game is not logical, have you tried holding a 40 kg sword likes those they used back then? I am positive and believes that any mature person can handle the weapons better with more endurance and faster movement in real life, than what the characters perform in-game. People will remind you how un-skilled they believe you are, they will call you a 12 year old CoD F*** and you will endure it; until you realize that, you would be able to stand for this harassment, if the game was worth it, but in the end, it is not, you wont FEEL good in the end, numbers or scores dosnt matter, you wont have fun with this game.
Chivalry: Medieval Warfare is build upon a fantastic concept and the idea is executed neatly, but the gameplay and game experience... The game feels unfinished, unpolished and unbalanced. Torn Banner Studios should either have worked more on this, or they should have left it to more experienced developers and programmers. At the end of the day, even though i got the game on sale, it is my burning wish somehow, someday Chivalry: Medieval Warfare will be gone from this world, and my money would have been spent on an actual game instead.

A really great game which realistically represents close- and range combat with various historical weapons. Gamemodes include: fighting in an arena, teamdeathmath, free for all death match, pillaging a city in a team, castle siege etc. and all of this in multiplayer! A must have for all fans of the medieval period!

Regardless of how high your skill level is, there will always be some people interrupting a battle slashing away randomly and getting an ungodly high score. It's incredibly easy to counter this on a solo fight, but in FFAs and anything higher than 2v1, it's impossible. Still that's in the hands of the players and not the fault of the game. The game just lacks replay value. I'm not very fond of playing this very often because it's not the most appealing thing I've ever played. Everything from the great combat system to the voice acting (and amusing dialogue) and the environments put you right there in brutal medieval battles. It is even a great game to watch in spectator mode!

The devs seem passionate and caring about their game and it is great to see patches & content updates being released.

The hit detection for me is perfect, it wouldn't matter if someone had their shield up or not, if you swing at their hand the chances are they're going to lose it. However I have only played around 4 hours of the game actually on multiplayer, if you're looking for an easy, relaxing, non stressful game then this isn't for you. However! You can hulk around wild swinging with a two-handed sword; you can run circles around people slicing them up with a one-handed axe; you can gracefully manipulate the distance between you and your opponent with a long reaching polearm; and so on. Defeating your opponent means assessing their style and doing your best to counter it. The depth seems subtle, but it's truly deep. But you can also disregard the technical aspects of combat and run in like a mad man. You might not conquer the game, but you can still have fun doing so.

The game could use some additonal modes for lasting appeal. But the core of this game--its combat--is highly refined and satisfying. The style of the game is spot-on for gritty high fantasy. The gore is shockingly well done. The animations feel fluid and natural. The atmosphere of the maps is well-polished and foreboding. All of this creates a high level of immersion. When you get sucked into the combat, you almost feel like you're really there. Dying in this game--especially after you've just made an error leading to a gruesome death--is an intense experience, and almost feels life-like. As you fall to the ground, blood pouring everywhere, you feel more than bested in combat. You feel like a sack of flesh, uselessly plummeting into the soil, questioning the purpose of your entire life. Okay, so I'm being a little melodramatic. But you get the picture. This game is awesome and is highly recommended for anyone looking for a fantasy combat game with the competitive spirit of first person shooters.

On the really bad side, there's the archery system, which is horrible, and can mostly be summed up by "Random spam of arrows for 10 minutes", most of the time. A lot of glitches on the hitboxes, especially when trying to parry a blow.

But I think the biggest problem this game has, is the extremely high learning curve required. The game doesn't have a lot of content, and you'll certainly abandon it before being any good on the battlefield sadly.

The blocking is really fun as you have to meet the tip of the enemies weapon with your shield or weapon like it would be in real life, so it takes some skill and at the same time is fun. Killing someone feels very satisfying as you are sometimes placed into situations unfavorable to you, yet come out victorious. Such an event happened where I was up against 2 warriors and 3 archers against just me. I ended up taking out both warriors and an archer before the other 2 killed me. I could have possibly won but didn't all because I didn't have a shield! So if you are good enough, skill does makes the difference! It's possible to take on a small group by yourself if you are smart enough! And that is just the best feeling to pull off stuff like that! The archer class is pretty fun too and gives you a break from melee combat if you've done it for a long time. It takes a bit to get used to but its neat to make a snipe from far away while at the same time saving a friend! Overall I feel it was well worth it, the combat is fun. The classes seem unique for the most part. And from visiting the forums, the developers really seem like they are going to update this game and stick with it. This game has a LOT of promise in my opinion. And if the modding community really wanted to, they could make some amazing things from this. I think this game was 100% worth the money. I love the combat even if I get a bit frustrated at my sword passing through someone without dealing damage because, when you chop the whole arm off, you will laughing like a mad (wo)man. It has some good gamemodes, like objective, however the game is just a low skilled noob version of mount and blade, no manual blocking etc. I just spam lmb and come top of the scoreboards nigh on every game. In mount and blade you require teamwork, tactics, practise, skill, reflexes, in chivalry you only need a working index finger and a left mouse button.

Imagine something with far better combat mechanics than Skyrim, and much faster action and sudden surprises than a COD/BF3 multiplayer match, and you've got this game. If you learn to play the game well you can have amazing things happen like playing a round of elimination deathmatch where you whole team dies off, and it's you versus 7 opponents, and you against all odds still kill them all off yourself to make a victory for your team. Also, if you aim your swing right with a warhammer, you can explode your enemy's head like a watermelon, which is a great way to feel better about yourself if you've been getting riled up about things. :) Expand

I admit when I first bought this game I played a round or two and shut it off frustrated. The fighting felt...clunky. Then I went back out of interest and did the tutorial again..things started to get better. I still have very distinct games..I can join one server and be doing horribly and drop and join another and get first place. I still have very distinct games..I can join one server and be doing horribly and drop and join another and get first place. But this game has a feel to it like Quake 2 did when I played...a bunch of players just having fun for the sake of fun. It's been a long time since I have openly laughed so much playing a game.

Archers - I have a terrible time with these..but some people appear to be really good. The timing is really hard to get down and I can only seem to hit a character sitting still.

Vanguard - I seem to do best with these guys, they have slow strikes but if you keep your timing right its pretty easy to win a duel.

Man At Arms - The fire pot is a great time...although dodging is tough to get right a good whack to the head with a mace can really damage opponents.

Knights - Too slow for me to really get into yet

The graphics are really nicely done. The sounds are hilarious in my opinion. I love when 10 people run screaming into battle, it has a charm to it because its not professional quality. The various gameplay modes are fun, some involve pushing a cart to an objective or knocking down a castle door. Free for all is really fast paced and a lot of fun as is team deathmatch.

Overall I have a great time playing this and havnt been able to put it down for weeks.

This game started out extremely frustrating. This game gets better with experience; Rewarding when you get the timing down for attacks while managing your stamina. The combat needs some tweeks but nothing too serious. 10 for me simply because it captures everything I expected in a medieval FPS.!!

A multiplayer experience that offers a realistic point of view of the Medieval melee battles. It's not fit for everyone, but if you get past the glitches and the high difficulty curve, you'll find an enjoyable and addictive game.

Chivalry is slightly… bipolar. The spectacle of a duel (especially if the two opponents are seasoned veterans) can be spectacularly breath-taking, a complex choreography that one can only marvel at. Blocks, feints, slashes, back-steps, side-hits: despite initial impressions, this can be a truly intellectual game of tactics, requiring high skills, observation and deviousness. On the other hand, the spectacle of a massive battle of fifty warriors can be ridiculously chaotic: especially if the players are inexperienced and go for blind “hack and slash” tactics, it’s more like a metal concert mosh pit than a battle for glory and honor. Chivalry is Quake to War of the Roses' Battlefield, and those seeking a faster-paced bloodier experience will undoubtedly prefer Chivalry's type of steel. [March 2013, p.65]
