Chivalry Medieval Warfare is a excellent Brutal FPS PVP slasher with a focus on close range bloody combat. Every swing and stab feels appropriatly heavy and violent and blocking requires skill and timing rather then just holding a butten. If you enjoy PVP, medieval combat or both you will love this game buy it right now!!

Amazing game really. I'm a big fan of Jedi Academy and any melee game that allows you to win with skill. Basically, this isn't a game where you can get "cheaped" like many.

There are several players already whose skills have passed the threshold to the point where one can barely defeat them. It's entirely skill based. It's also a throw back to the good old days with a SDK, free content

@whoohoomasters review, I'm not sure what he means by missing, but this is made by the same team that made Age of Chivalry. UI is kinda flawed, but server drops is his issue, I've never had it, and looking the support section, neither has anyone else.

Yeah the characters walk with a stick in their rear, but who cares? That just adds to the humorous overtones that is so damn prevalent in this game. You can't help but laugh every time you play this game. The emoticons and saying you can say are hilarious and you guy can yell and scream bloody murder. The sound is amazing, blood gurguls, flesh and blood pouring, man, I get blood lust just thinking about it. The naysayers complain that their isn't any tactics, and that is crap too. In objective mode, the tactics are just as good as any Mount and Blade game. Besides, the game isn't about tactics, it's about chopping off limbs! Sure there isn't mounted combat and incredible customization but that doesn't even nick the surface of the game's true potential. There are many different weapons and classes with their own unlockables to find your best playstyle suited for you. There isn't a ton to unlock which is actually liberating; you get to just enjoy the game without playing with a carrot on a stick like COD players. The gore is well done and the graphics are AMAZING. How an indie studio did this (thank you Unreal engine) amazes me. Just goes to show you don't need to make pixelated or low-budget 1990's graphics platformers just because you are an idie studio. Game has been on top 5 or top 10 on steam in sales last 3 weeks for a reason. Only multiplayer but well priced. The levels are intricate and varied. Some are small arenas, others have different levels and are large. Now the cons. The death traps are great ideas but only 1 level has them really and it seems too hard to utilize them. Would like to see that fleshed out and expanded a bit. There are many different game types which is a positive. There are however only a small number levels or so, for a multiplayer only game which can get tiring. What all but erases this is the makers said they are adding new weapons and levels for free because of the game success (gotta love awesome developers that care about their fans/community (Looking at you infinity ward, releasing 2 new maps and 2 old maps and nothing else for almost price of entire chivaly game)) The combat also always works and you feel like you get outplayed if you lose. Unless you get double or triple teamed which is just a casualty of the game but happens a lot. Nothing is more annoying than when you are rocking someone and their teamate kills you from behind. The makers are also adding duels which is awesome. Sometimes the combat is confusing how it works. You will get hit mid swing and it will stop you and the guy can attack 3 times before you attack one. But then you may hit him with a faster weapon and he still hits you afterward with a stronger weapon, which makes no sense. The progress system makes no sense. You have no clue how close you are to the next level or what it takes to level up. Some levels took me hours and others took me 30 minutes. There was a customization feature but there were no other options after default even after i was much higher level. That feature must not be implemented yet. The lack of customization does take fun away. All in all great game and support this developer. This is everything war of the roses should have been but is nowhere close to. 9.5/10 Expand

Combining the 3 basic slashes, combos, a directional parry, kicks, ducks and jumps, feints, footwork and coordination give even the most dedicated melee enthusiasts an ample move set at their disposal. Finding a weapon and class combination, whether you want to be a tower shield wielding Defender or an offensive, jumpy Man at Arms give loads of experimentation. Torn Banner is a loyal and friendly developer, and promises to add free content updates including new weapons, maps, game modes, customization, and even an SDK for modding and map creating. The game modes range from simple Team Deathmatch and King of the Hill to a multi-tiered Team Objective mode taking place in beautiful maps, where teams will raid villages, push siege weapons, sink enemy ships, and (in my personal favorite segment) the player on the top of the leaderboard will become the King, and their team must defend him with their lives while the enemy charge in waves through the throne room. The immersion in the game is top notch, as your army lets the enemy hear their battlecries as they charge, blades clash together, you hear screaming from the distance, siege weapons wreck the battlefield and you truly feel the scope of your actions. I can recommend this game to anyone looking for a fun medieval game that, in my humble opinion, has the best melee system in any game to date. There's a few others too that I haven't played yet. But my favorite so far, is the objective mode. Push a cart of diseased bodies (think like payload on TF2), or get past the defenders and destroy the catapults, or light fires to things, or break into a boarded up home and kill the heirs to the throne, or at the end of one of them you have to kill or protect the king, which is made of one of the players. There's more I think, but you get the gist. The objective modes aren't just one thing. You have 3 or 4 areas or objectives to do one by one. So while there is currently only 6 maps it's still like 18-24 areas to battle in. There's supposed to be free maps coming, as it is, there's a good amount of variety already, as I said 18-24 areas each one with an objective. The maps are very well done. With lots of different medieval style buildings and wooden outposts, and the terrain isn't flat. One map has a wooden log you have to get across as one of the ways to get to the objective, and below is a river you die if you fall in. The game looks pretty dang good too. Not BF3 quality, but very good nonetheless. This game is just downright fun. Even when you get teamkilled, it isn't that bad. It happens. Everyone is swinging swords and maces around, it'll happen. Don't get mad, just slouch it off. It doesn't happen too often. 1-2 times a match usually. But you can kill 20-30 people in a match, I've seen higher. Even in my short time, just got the game about 5 hours ago, I've already racked up 26 kills in a match. There's four classes. Man of Arms, Vanguard, Knight, and Archer. Each class has 3 different slots for weapons (or you can use one of them for a shield or throwing knife/axe/smoke bomb). There's multiple weapons per slot. So you can use a great big axe or like a big claymore/greatsword for one of the slots. I think it comes with 3 weapons per slot from the get go with a few more able to be unlocked. But yeah there's quite a few weapons available. Controls. While most people will play KB+M, I will tell you that you can at least hybrid it. You can Gamepad+Mouse it, at least with the 360 controller. You probably could play just with the 360 controller, but I haven't tried that, so can't corroborate that. As is you can rebind the keys and the 360 controller is recognized (even as a 360 controller). But yeah you are probably going to want to use the mouse for the aim, as precision is key for blocking.

Timing is important while playing, and you can fake your strike. Some classes can charge, and of course Archers can rain down hell from a distance. But there are limitations to them in the sense you have to reload the crossbow, and can only hold the arrow for so long, run out of arrows for a time period, etc. Game seems pretty balanced. Might need a tweak or two, but I see everybody killing everybody and various classes being better against others and vice versa. That's how it is. People with longer weapons have a reach advantage, people with faster weapons can strike faster, archers can get creamed when up close with the big boys. But that doesn't mean they can't do damage themselves in melee. You can even kick people in the chest which is pretty cool. Health regenerates (no health pickups or team spawn or picking your teammate up), but the health regenerates slowly so it's done right imo. One really cool thing about the game is if you spawn and your team gets an objective, rather than have to run all the way, you can hit a button an respawn at the beginning of the next section's spawn point. Also it's TELLS and ALERTS you this happened. Great addition there. The combat is rewarding. You can cut off heads. But it doesn't stop there. You can cut off arms too! Hell one time I took out a dude's leg, he was dazed, I took off his arm and head in the next shot. Yes, that feels really rewarding. It's also not just the greatswords that take off heads, while I haven't played every weapons, multiple classes and weapons can do it. A mace will easily take off a head, and it's totally possible to kill multiple people at once, even multiple heads at once! Get this game. Go slaughter some filthy villagers! Raze the fields! Kill the King and his heirs! While it isn't perfect, it's very close to being perfect. The genre doesn't have much competition or history. Basically Warband and the recently release War of the Roses (funny huh...unique genre and yet a competing product comes out and almost the same time). Don't worry though, TONS of people are playing this game. Easily 3000 or more people.

I won't even say it's good for an indie game, because it's good compared to even the AAA games. I read through all these reviews and the only negative reviews here are from people who clearly haven't had the practce and/or taken the time to understand the combat mechanics fully (learn to play before posting reviews...). I do not recommend games lightly to friends and family, but I highly recommended this one. The combat is both subtle and nuanced, but yet has that easy to learn , but hard to master appeal. The graphics are great, for example if you hit someone in the head with a heavy Maul their head actually explodes, whereas if you hit their left body you may chop off their left arm, complete with bloody spurting to the cadence of their heartbeat and visible severed arteries and bone marrow.

The gameplay itself is tremendous with various pop cap servers which plays a large role in determining the types of fights you are likely to get. High pop servers tend to be Giant bar brawl/street fights like you would see in the movie Braveheart. Lower pop server tend to feature a lot of 1 vs 1's.

My only beef I think would be the archery system, it's pretty lackluster compared to how the melee is done and archers are always messing up your fights fro ma mile away. But, other than that it's pretty flawless.

After you get rolling in this game, it is hard to stop. 1v1 with another real player is where this game truly shines.

Finally a fun fps style game. It's been a while since I've played a game that was fun like this. This was made by a small group of people so that's probably why it plays so well as compared to big company made games. The blood, and guts are awesome, and I love playing the archer character for a challenge.

Graphics, sounds and overall feel of the game is just stunning for such an Indy game, for sure it beats the other competitors in term of these, I am sure that the game will last very long time live with a lot of player and supported community, I hope all the success for the developers for future add-on/ games. There needs to be tweaking done to balance the weapons, and some upgrades to the hit box system would be nice. However all of the flaws are minor, for the most part it works how you would expect it to work. The maps are well designed, however you can get stuck on seemingly non-existing rocks or invisible walls from time to time.

Conclusion: The game is good for what it is, those who expected more shouldn't play a combat game based around such a simple time. Everything works, it runs smooth, and there are no huge balance issues. It can only get better from here. I rate the game an 8, as no game is perfect, and this game has it's flaws. It is indie after all.

Even though Wotr has more weapons, the weapons in chivalry feel more unique, and i have more of a gotta catch em all feel than in Wotr. Regardless they are both great games but i prefer Chivalry. I bought into War of the Roses hoping it would be the spiritual successor to Warband, but the melee in WotR is horribly clunky and the "realistic" armor modeling means that certain classes are invincible against others. In other aspects WotR has no realism at all, having an arcade "tackle" mechanic and spawning players immediately into battles.

Chivalry fixes all of these problems. Combat is 100% skill-based. Although there's no "directional" attacking and blocking a la Warband and WotR, blocks must be timed perfectly and cannot be held infinitely. The graphics -- with dismemberment! -- and audio are superior for an indie studio, with the right touches of humor thrown in for a multiplayer red vs. blue game that doesn't need to take its lore overly seriously. The minor problems in Chivalry at the moment which keep it from a perfect score, like poor VOIP and no coded team balancing, should be worked out soon according to developers on the forums. Looking forward to playing this game for a very long time.

The Mason Order was once a part of Agatha, however they has split into a newly formed order who wish to take Agathian’s lands. As I have found, this game is highly addictive. My playtime can be set out in a ‘highly detailed’ chart.
1 hour Wtf? How did he? Why am I dead?
    2 hours *Escape* *Quit*
3+ hours Wtf? How did I? Why am I alive?
The game’s gruesome melee system is a graphic delight; nothing is more satisfying then killing someone and then attempting to slice off the ragdoll’s head to see it rolling down a hill. The game is running on the Unreal 3 engine and looks very pretty, although some of the scripted sequences need some more work. For example when a wall has been torn down with a Ballista (or any other more appropriate medieval tools( I don’t do too well with the thinking)) you can see the wall slide down into the ground with rubble sliding up as well as the many particle effects used to hide this, clearly not well.
Now finally the combat, this is the biggest review scoring factor. The game uses a real-time swing system; the player will get the choice to choose 3 types of attacks; the swing, the overhead and the stab. Each attack available will be given the ability to modify it location mid swing, enabling the player to cut behind a shield or through it when the game doesn’t like me, did I mention the game dislikes me? Four classes will be available to the player with different traits and abilities, each balancing speed, weapons and health; one of these classes is an Archer, is very out of place in this game. The whole game uses a melee system; the addition of archers just seems to be used to appeal to medieval enthusiasts. For a group of players looking to ‘clan-it-up’, all they need to do is move around their enemy to poke at this back until someone wishes to steal a kill.
Chivalry is an extremely addictive game, it uses an unlock system to drag the player through the archer’s crossbow for the sweet, sweet ‘clean’ weapon selection menu. The game is currently filling an empty market of multiplayer sword fighting, which means this is the best you’ll get; although that’s not a bad thing.

The only way to get good at this game is to play it A LOT.

That being said, you don't need to be really good at this game to enjoy it. There are a lot of low-rank servers that are well populated at the moment and they consist of most people just swinging blindly into each other having fun (with the exception of a handful of tryhards who make new accounts just so they cn get a fresh rank and kill noobs in low-rank servers).

What I described above is very important, because some people will want to be good at this game but won't be willing to put in the time which will result in them being frustrated and not playing again, wasting their money. Now you know.

Gameplay is Chivalry's greatest strength. You may see others comparing the gameplay/controls to games like war of the roses or mount & blade, but truth is there really is nothing to compare. They are all different games, but in terms of melee combat Chivalry's system is much more intuitive, realistic, smooth and in-depth (there is actually nothing else quite like it). I won't get into the details, but I'll just say that once you decide to graduate from swinging blindly, there are always ways to improve how you fight and there will always be new tactics you can encounter. The combat system is done so well, that people can even create their own attacks (using the drag mechanic), and people have created some very cool ones that are quite difficult to block, making the game fresh for everyone.

Graphically, Chivalry looks pretty good. However, it runs quite terribly. It isn't too hard to get the game running at 60fps though, which is what matters for me. I simply turn down all my settings and play it as smoothly as possible. If you have a rig powerful enough to run at 60fps with maxed settings, the experience will definitely even be more enjoyable for you, because the game does look really good (watch a video for yourself).

Chivalry is quite buggy. But despite what all the try-hards say, there aren't really any game breaking bugs. The only crash I've experienced in the past couple years is when I minimize the game as its loading a map. Crashing mid-game is something that, for most people, never happens. Most "bugs" consist of the rare occurrence of a swing ghosting through a player, or hearing the sound of a parry but still failing to parry the attack. 99% of the time, when your swing ghosts through a player it is because you or your enemy has a high ping, or server lag. There aren't any game breaking bugs. The worst thing to deal with in chivalry is the server lag, for more reasons than one. It happens frequently (at least once or twice every few hours) but not enough to be frustrating for me. Besides, the lag always comes and goes, it's never there for an entire game. The really annoying thing is that players will claim that you are lagging when you beat them, even though they have no way of differentiating from server lag and you possibly lagging.

Which brings me to the community. I'm not going to be that guy who says Chivalry has the best or worst community. Those people are idiots. However, I will say that most people in the game have one of two attitudes:

#1. If they lose to you, they will compliment you on your victory, attempt to find out what they did wrong and rematch you again to try and improve themselves.

#2. If they lose to you, they will call you a lagger, hacker, exploiter or no-life etc. These people rematch you because they are upset that they lost and they want to make themselves feel better. They don't improve quickly at the game compared to people who have attitude #1.

There are plenty of players with attitude #2, so just be weary of that. The game has a huge skill gap which is rarely found in other games these days that often hold the player's hand. Many new players find this skill gap hard to accept and will immediately resort to calling others cheaters instead of being interested in what makes them so good at the game (which is how you should think). In fact the skill gap is so wide that, without server lag and bug encounters, it can literally be impossible for a "newish" player to kill some of the oldest ones.

Overall, the game is one of the best I've played. I've put in almost 1000 hours now. There's hardly ever new content or patches in the game, but I'm always learning how to improve swordplay, which is enough to keep it interesting. Also, the game, at its heart, is hilarious. I can't finish one game without giggling or laughing. I almost always feel good when I play it. That always makes me come back. The exaggerated voice acting honestly doesn't get old.

The gameplay is very fun - who wouldn't want to experience warfare in the middle ages?

There are so many strategies and skills to learn that it takes a long time to actually get good at Chivalry - just like with an FPS like Counter-Strike. I think this is one of the hallmarks of a well-designed game - that it is hard in a way that isn't cheap, but takes time to master.

My only criticism is the lack of maps and gameplay modes.

Chivalry: Medieval Warfare is one of the easiest games to jump in and have a blast, but the learning curve for new players is very hard. Most new players swing left click over and over again without thought or strategies; this is a mistake. Hell most of the reviews that were low score were made my "gamers" that never understood the true versatility of the game.

Most of these reviews were written before the major updates to the game. The devs have added to the 3 main attacks(right shoulder overhand, horizontal swing right to left, and a stab), now you can swing horizontally left to right and swing an overhand from the opposite shoulder. This adds depth to the game and makes defending and attacking more versatile. The beta was full of glitches and problems affecting game play, 90% of them have been fixed.

I'm level 35 with 450 hours in the game, i know this game forwards and backwards and the ability to adjust you swings by slowing them down and speeding them up with a movement of your mouse is one of the greatest innovations in a game in many years. Hell you can lean forward and backwards at the waist to do a matrix lean back dodge or duck under an enemies swing. This adds so much to the game in the way of learning curve. Not only do you have to hit someone that is dodging under and around your strikes but you have to dodge around there swings as you miss over there head and they come in at close range to hit you while your still swinging your whiffed strike.

This is a real time strategy game with twitch based game play, but you wont see all this till at least 10-15 hours in the game. Normally around level 15 is when people start to "see" the animations of the characters as second nature and react instantly to the swings. I have never played a multi-player game that was harder to master and more rewarding to learn in. There's nothing quite like pulling off a new move in combat and getting it to work at the dismay and of the enemies in the game.

There's a lot more to the game then people think. For example, when preforming an overhead attack(alt overhead is best) the swing starts behind you. If you jump at your opponent and turn 180 degrees around(back to them) and swing a overhead in the air while leaning backwards you can hit your opponent with your back turned to them. This sounds a bit ridiculous, and it is, but its not easy to do(100 hours of toying with it for it to work right and look smooth). I gave this example to show that the reviewers have NO CLUE how in-depth the melee combat is. Our group of player, |MonK|, has formed its own style in the game were we do 360's while jumping and swinging, mind you that it does not look glitched or break the game by exploit. It is very hard to do and takes way to much practice, but the rewards of being able to preform a perfect 360 to reverse 180 to 360 while swinging and hit them is all worth the time.

THIS GAME IS HARD TO MASTER!!!! TRY TILL LEVEL 15 TO GET A FULL VIEW OF THE GAME.

In closing i would say buy this game, its only 25 bucks and that is very cheap for the gameplay it offers. There are lots of games made by AAA developers that cant stand toe to toe with the epic gameplay and utter controlability of this game.

    Hope this helped,

I love the Medieval style in Chivalry, from a mod Torn Banner Studios made a good game that travels you back to the historic times. And although I don't agree to DLC, Chivalry: Deadliest Warrior which is mostly based (as far as I know) on the TV series adds some new classes like Samurai, Knight, Pirates and more!

This game is a masterpiece. The combat is incredibly challenging but also very fun to use and learn. You can use the movement of your mouse to dodge swings from a greatsword and kill a heavily armoured knight with a dagger if you're skilled enough, and boy is it a good feeling. People moan about the mechanics being broken... They're not broken, you're just bad at realistic melee combat. :^)

This game is sort of stupid, but in the Garry's Mod way, as in it's a stupidly fun time! The game is absolutely hilarious, with the various knights shouting and flailing their swords everywhere! The only downside is that it's buggy, but that's not even close to a deal breaker. Recommended!

Fun and challenging. To play well in this game it requires teamwork, patience, and timing. If you don't want to learn how the weapons work, or don't want to have the patience it takes to win these fights as most one on one fights take a few minutes, you wont like this game. It takes a while to get used to but its worth putting in the time.

Classes are more balanced now as I understand, I still get the itch that archers should just be removed from the game, or limited to how many can be on a team, I'm not saying that it's cheap, because using the bow is pretty hard, but it kind of takes away why I even wanted to play the game: first person melee, but you end up running for 45 seconds to get to someone and then you just get taken out by some a-hole sitting on a tower, that you can't even shoot back at or counter in any way. Then you find out that some people play in 3rd person, which I hear is much easier, well if I wanted to play a third person action game I'd go play something that does it much better than this game. But it does give you an advantage in being able to see where your strikes are actually going.

Overall, it's a unique experience to say the least. Battles with 40+ people are chaotic and fun. They just need to flesh out some things and I'll play it more than I currently do.

OK so this game might not be every ones cuppa' tea. I'll try my best to break it down in the simplest of terms.

Chivalry is a game which requires a fair amount of practice and skill to play well. So MLG power weapon hoarders on Halo need not download. Strategic use of blocks, faint attacks and class play is required if the only way you can enjoy the game is to get a perfect K/D ratio. Though when you first play be warned, your ratio will be negative and that's ok.

The fun of the game, for me, comes from the participating in giant skirmishes on open battleground. Charging headlong into a skirmish swinging your weapon in the hopes that your blade will be guided to victory and then discovering you've just decapitated your team mate. Yeah there's a fair few team kills so get used to saying sorry, a lot.

Bloodshed in this game seems to think that Mortal Kombat just challenged it to a gore off, all sword attacks seem to chop off some part of your opponents body and leave them crying into the ground as the blood spurts from their arms. Just don't admire the effects too long or you'll find yourself joining them.

Even fist attacks have the power of Thors Hammer in every swing as fist only matches tend to end with you knocking more heads off than Liu Kang at a bar fight (points to anyone who knows who Liu Kang is, which better be all of you.)

Such a game of bloodshed and scream is accompanied by a variety of modes to back it up. Classic TDM and Free-for-alls are complimented by objective based team games such as Defend the King and others. This also comes with custom modes such as bar fights in which only fists are allowed and low gravity modes for those of you who are complete sadists.

In summary Chivalry is a game you better get used to dying on. Cause you'll die lots before you get good.

    Gameplay
Chivalry has a simple to learn, but hard to master way of controlling sword strikes. It consists of clicking your mouse to swing (duh) which is made more complex by being able to use your mouse to speed up or slow down swings to fool or outpace the enemy. Stamina makes it so that it costs to miss an attack but makes it also cost to just keep blocking, as eventually you'll run out of stamina and die by doing this. HIGH LEARNING CURVE.

    Value
Many different servers to play on and many different modes and maps, there is a lot to do here and the developers are committed to the game and releasing new content.

I will note that this is a glitchy, crash-prone title and re-balances can drastically change the way to game works

    Conclusion
Chivalry is an excellent online offering that is worth the 6.24 I paid for it

Chivalry is slightly… bipolar. The spectacle of a duel (especially if the two opponents are seasoned veterans) can be spectacularly breath-taking, a complex choreography that one can only marvel at. Blocks, feints, slashes, back-steps, side-hits: despite initial impressions, this can be a truly intellectual game of tactics, requiring high skills, observation and deviousness. On the other hand, the spectacle of a massive battle of fifty warriors can be ridiculously chaotic: especially if the players are inexperienced and go for blind “hack and slash” tactics, it’s more like a metal concert mosh pit than a battle for glory and honor.
