    Amazing. Very fun platforming where you start with only a jump, dash and a climb but then discover more techniques/mechanics along the way.

    Good difficulty curve. The main story might be hard- but completely doable for anyone. The postgame offers a lot more challenge. The difficulty is not about pixel perfect jumps, it's rather keeping the pace and finding the optimal solution.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is outstanding. The graphics, while 8/16 bit, look great, and the pixel art work is outstanding. All of the mechanics feel alive, and the story helps this notion by elaborating on where we are and how this mountain came to be. The design of the game makes it surprisingly easy to learn, but difficult to master. This amazing blend of ease of access while providing a challenge is what makes this game so special. To reiterate, the whole game somehow looks great with very little, providing beautiful landscapes. The narrative builds up over time and leaves me feeling happy, rather than the emptiness i find while playing other games. The optional collectibles such as strawberries, hearts, and more really add more challenge and insane replay-ability. I've sank 28 hours into this game, and I often feel like I've barely scratched the surface of it. You learn a concept, master it, and build it on to more. [spoiler time] The ending is a nice look-back to all of the mechanics you learned previously, building on even more to them. Once you are nearing the top, it gets very tense and difficult, and the counting down checkpoint numbers add to this feeling. You legitimately feel very accomplished, and that you have mastered the game. Which gets supported by the upbeat ending dialogue where you go back and meet everyone you've met along the way. It's awesome to feel that you have done it. You feel that you yourself climbed the mountain, and got stronger and better at it along the way, rather than you feeling that you helped a sprite do it. What first seems to be a silly game about collecting flying strawberries becomes so much more. However, if you want to test your skills further, you can always try out the B or C sides of every chapter, collecting all of the strawberries, or attempting the 8th chapter. And that's not even mentioning the outstanding soundtrack and sound effects, which make the experience even better. Plus, this game is super speedrun friendly, with an optional speedrun timer and the ability to skip every cutscene in the game. It's a blast to speedrun this, as you feel nostalgic about learning all of the mechanics, and you don't feel chained down by slow openings or boring unskippable cutscenes. It's crazy to think that one of the best games of all time is also insanely fun to speedrun, and all this melds together to make, in my opinion, the best game of 2019. And to think that this masterpiece is an INDIE GAME, and not created by a billion dollar company. Heck, the name of the company is "Matt Makes Games"! While many point to the graphics and think that this game is another lazy game, it is quite the opposite, as it balances an outstanding story with outstanding gameplay with an outstanding soundtrack, and even more. This game is an absolute masterpiece, and I would recommend it to anyone who considers buying it. This game is better than nearly all Triple-A $60 releases, and it's costs less than third of that and is created by a very small team. All in all, Celeste is one of the greatest games ever made, and it excels in nearly every aspect. This game is a must-play, and I can't believe it's an indie title. I urge you to buy this masterpiece of a game. I promise you, you will not regret it. Expand

    I'm not much of a platformer player, but this game is hands down, the best platformer game I've ever played. You don't see very often that an indie game competed with the games such as Read Dead Redemption 2, God of War, AC: Odyssey and Spider-Man in the Game Awards. I can easily say that Celeste was by far the best game among all the nominees, and trust me, I've played every one of them.I'm not much of a platformer player, but this game is hands down, the best platformer game I've ever played. I can easily say that Celeste was by far the best game among all the nominees, and trust me, I've played every one of them.

    Story looks very simple at the beginning. A girl named Madeline tries to climb a mountain. It's a simple story that you'd expect from a platformer game, right?

    Wrong.

    As you try to pass all the tough levels and chapters, you're beginning to realize that this is not a story about climbing a mountain. It's a story about overcoming your depression, your anxiety and your fear. As you progress through the game, Madeline constantly ignores her inner self, which resembles her fear, anxiety and depression. She just rans away from it, like all of us do in our lives.

    I want to shout-out to level design here, because the longer Madeline ignores her feelings, the harder the chapters get. It gets so hard that you want to quit the game, but you remember the very first line the game told you. "You can do this." And you try harder and harder.

    Once you overcome your desperation, depression and anxiety, the levels feel easier. It's not becoming easier by any means, on the contrary, it becomes much HARDER. Harder than nearly all the platformer games out there. However, the game gives you the feeling of improving so well that you feel confident and feel like you'll pass all the challenges the game throws at you. And you do too. Even someone like me, who hates hard games like Soulsborne, keeps trying to overcome every challenge.

    I'm 114 hours into the game as I write this review, but I still couldn't beat all the challenges. Sure, I beat the 100% of the game, but like a masochist, I try to get 114%, which seems nearly impossible. Way harder than 112% of Hollow Knight. But I feel like I'll betray the game if I don't pass every challenge the game offers.

    As for gameplay, it's like the story of the game. Simple at the beginning, advanced at the end. Mechanics are comprised of three basic elements. Jump, grab, and dash. Of course there's more to that, but the game won't tell you advanced techniques until you've finished the game. Sure, you can discover this mechanics in your normal playthrough, (and you'll definitely discover some of them by your own) but levels don't require for you to use those advanced techniques. It requires for only 100% and 114%.

    And the mechanics are so freaking smooth! Unlike many other platformer, you really feel like you have the full control over your character. Ever died in a game and said "I hate this game! I pressed ctrl but my character crouched so late!" Yeah, you won't say that in this game. Controls are so timely and consistent. Also everything is pixel-perfect. So, if you died, that's on you.

    And lastly, the soundtrack. Shout-out to Lena Raine for her masterpiece music. There couldn't be more suitable tracks for the atmosphere of the game. Music changes in every chapter and all the tracks reflect their chapters theme and story so well. You'll listen it over and over, even if you spent hours to the game and heard the all of the soundtrack thousands of times.

    Overall, 11/10. 2018's Game of the Year.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. One of the best games I've ever played. The movement is fluid. Jumps, dashes and climbs react the frame you press the input, going exactly where you want them to. Celeste doesn't suffer from the floatiness of other platformers, without sacrificing maneuverability. The moveset alone would make this game fun if it were placed in an empty box, but it's not.

    The level design is brilliant as well, teaching the player without telling them what to do (there is a brief tutorial, but that's just to teach the player which buttons do what). Each room has a number of solutions, giving the player a sense of pride upon figuring each of them out.

    None of the rooms feel unfair to the player - the game doesn't laugh at the player for each mistake, but explains that each death brings you closer to the solution. It's not an easy game, but the difficulty curve scales steadily with the player, through the optional collectibles, B sides, C sides, and core, which are just as well designed as the required sections.

    The visuals are fantastic, though some people show distaste for pixel art in general. The animations are fluid, and lively. Incredible attention is put into every little detail in the game, from a lamp that swings when you brush by it, to the small clouds of dust that appear when landing from a jump. It's the subtle things that make good visuals great.

    The story and music are worth mentioning as well, but I tend to play my games on mute, and while Madeline's character arc is important to the game as a whole, I don't tend to care about story when it comes to platformers, so my opinion isn't really valid when it comes to those 2 things, as I didn't pay much attention to either in game. That said, if you do prefer to have sound on, you definitely should for this game, as the soundtrack is amazing, especially in the B sides and C sides, but I mostly only know this particular aspect from watching lets plays, not in my own experience with the game.

    While I do personally love the game, I also know that it's not for everyone. A lot of the optional parts of the game can become insanely difficult towards the end, so don't expect to 100% it unless you're /really/ good at platformers, or willing to sink a lot of time into it. Some of this difficulty can be eased via the built in assist mode, but I would strongly advise attempting the game on normal before trying assist mode, as it does take just a bit of the sweetness away from each victory.

    (Copy paste from my review for this game on the switch. They're the same game, except the controls are a bit more precise on the keyboard compared to the joycons, so misinputs are far less common in this version. I would recommend getting the PC version over switch, xbox, or ps4, as you have the option of switching between a keyboard or a controller if you so desire)

    Most annoying and overrated game ever. Basically, on every screen you have to break your fingers in order to perform impossible jump sequences using horrible controls. Keyboard or Controller doesn't matter, both suck and it is pure luck when you finally finish a screen. On to the next...which is even more horrible. And if that wasn't already enough, they add time pressure and enemies that follow you crazily fast.

    There are big "screens" which are actually several screens you scroll through. And guess what, when you fail in such a big screen, you always start at the beginning. Needless to say that the jumps required are crazy hard and when I say pixel-perfect, I really mean pixel-perfect.

    I thought this would be a nice platformer, but it actually is a "Try each screen 100 times until you make it" simulator. That's all what the devs are capable of.

    You have to try each screen so many times that it is just annoying.

    Dialogues are very simple, actually not very creative. Could be written by a 15 year old high school student.

    I don't know but this game seems extremely overrated. It is ok, but that's it. I will suffer through it because I never quit a game.

    Graphics and sound are good though. But the basic concept of platforming and trying 100 times just sucks.

People nowadays are used to play easy games and I am a little upset with that.I am disappointed with the casual players who tried the game and did not learn to play it. Same with those who do not appreciate pixel art. It seems they never knew the true difficulty of the games that were years ago. I think that's a reason for giving a low score. What makes Celeste special to me in comparison to other titles from its genre is that it gives me the feeling that it focuses 100% on the actual platforming and nothing else. There are no enemies to kill, resources to gather, quests to be completed or over the top game mechanics, which are supposed to be the main gimmick of a lot of 2D-platformers these days (Of course new chapters introduce new game mechanics, but they never overstay their welcome). You just clear one level after another, each level builds on the experience you gathered from the previous levels and they build on one another perfectly.

    There are tons of levels and extra challenges, enough content to keep you busy for a long period of time. That combined with beautiful pixel art and a great soundtrack add up to a solid title that's definitely worth your bucks.

    The game can get very repetitive though and you may spend a lot of time on a single level with dozens or hundreds of attempts on the same level (especially if you decide to take a shot at chapter 9, but also in the previous chapters). This can be very frustrating, so if you're not a fan of replaying the same level a lot of times, you should probably keep off playing this game, because that's what you'll be doing literally all the time. I'm a big fan of such games where I have to try again and again to complete it because it feels more rewarding when I finally do. But that might not be everyone's cup of tea.

    And just a design note: I think it is kind of a shame this game does not have an official feature for creating your own maps and levels and to share them online. The base game sets up a perfect blueprint for some Mario Maker-esque stuff with all the different mechanics and level design concepts and the devs made nothing out of it. There is still a modding community out there and community-made tools to create your own levels and share them online, but it's very niche. Bummer.

The music atmosphere definitely creates a form of suspense especially when you draw to the end of every chapter. I don't even consider myself a hardcore gamer and in the whole game there were probably 2 or 3 places where I was like "yeah I"m not gonna beat this" but managed ok after maybe 50-100 tries, who knows. But I quickly realised it was a little outside my skill level at the time and it took me some time to get good and get into it. The steep learning curve made it a bit less enjoyable for me starting out, so unless you know you love challenging platforming you may want to reconsider the game.

    The game is [Challenging, Fluid, Addictive, Artistic, Impactful, Unique]

    => Pros:
    + Addictive and extremely fluid gameplay;
    + In each room you find a new challenge, because each one is perfectly designed;
    + Difficulty quite variable according to the progression of the story;
    + Due to the immediate replay the player returns quickly and evolves his ability to use the mechanics;
    + The story is impressive and addresses important topics, such as anxiety and depression;
    + Strawberries encourage people to play even more;
    + Easy addiction, and you don't get tired anytime soon;
    + Exceptional soundtrack;
    + Memorable characters;
    + Very beautiful interface with the 3D mountain;
    + Magnificent art direction;

    => Cons:
    - The story could take a deeper look at issues of impact, such as depression, and in that respect it was shallow;
    - The plot focuses a lot on the main character, and the others characters have a superficial story, with the exception of Theo who goes a little further;
    - Strawberries only serve to define which pie will be made in the epilogue, and to platinum the game, that is, they could have been better used by the developers, such as unlocking the character's skins, something that doesn't exist in the game, but should;
    - It is almost impossible to platinum the game, mainly because of chapter 9, which is the Dark Souls of the platforms, unless you are absurdly insistent;
    - The developers managed to raise the difficulty to an extraordinary level, which made me give up of platinizing the game, despite having already completed everything else, that is, chapter 9 is an exaggeration in difficulty, apart from that both new chapters have a somewhat meaningless connection with the main plot;

    => VERDICT:
    The Verdict is that Celeste is a masterpiece that will surely addict you and make you want to complete, also for the too captivating story, but mainly because of the immediate replay factor and extremely playable fluid and pleasurable. The game shows you that no matter how much you improve or the level of dominance of the mechanics, you will always have problems, and each room reinvents itself in something new and challenging, minimally designed to put you approves. The only thing I don't recommend investing in is Chapter 9, because it is such a difficult level, that you will get to a room that will get stuck, and you will not be able to complete it, unless you are a pro-player in platform, and want to end the game 100%. However, it is worth investing in the main plot, and helping Madeline climb the mountain, even though she doesn't know why she is doing it.

    But the story isn't impressive enough and it's actually okay. Because obviously the story is not the main subject of the game. This is just an excuse for the main game.
    When it comes to basic mechanics, it's just a classic 2D platformer mechanics. You only have dashing and grappling mechanics except moving in four directions.But the exciting part is that, the game has 7 chapters, and in each chapter the game gives you new unique mechanics.
    And the game's level design is definitely fantastic. Total game has been dividing by seven chapters. and each chapter comes with unique level mechanics and environment. Game never chennaling you to one play style. you can pass the chapters too many ways. And if you have trouble to passing chapter, you can find a way to play chapter's B side, or just passing trough with assist mode without playing the chapter.
    I found the game's art, UI and character design very cute. I felt very peaceful most of the time with the mountain view and musics. Even though I finished the game after dying 2013 times, it was a good experience for me.

Have heard about it quite a bit for the last few years, also heard it was quite difficult, have always been interested in it but games with high levels of difficulty are usually chosen carefully by myself, as it really is dependent on the mood I am in at that time. Despite having some moments of frustration, I am glad to have completed this one and ready to give my thoughts.

    Story - Lets start with the more simple side of things, you play as a female character, who you can name, though I went with the default which is Madeline, and she wants to climb Celeste mountain, her motivations for this aren't very clear to us nor even her but you embark on this journey with Madeline and see some growth in her character as she makes the dreaded climb. I was happy with the overall outcome, yes it's simplistic, but the story is nice and the characters are in short supply but very memorable. This is the perfect balance of story for this type of game in my view, it doesn't overstay its welcome in any way.

    Gameplay - Its a 2D platforming game where you are tasked with clearing 7 chapters for the base game, using only 3 main buttons to do so, that being a jump, a dashing move and a climbing button, this is all you get throughout the game and its all you need really, each Chapter has a different look, and a different gimmick, some type of new platforming mechanic or a unique puzzle idea, I loved it. Some levels are better than others, I disliked Chapter 5 towards the end thanks to some enemies called Seekers who would painfully chase you down throughout most of the level, but I loved pretty much every level for their unique design. I had a great time with the game despite some frustrating moments due to difficulty which I will follow up with below...

    Difficulty - Tis a hard one. I played all 7 Chapters and yes there is more to the game, but it is mostly the same thing with higher levels of difficulty and slight differences in the story from what I have heard. I was happy to stop after the credits, and felt the game was difficult but as you access different screens of the game, if you die there, you will just be warped back to that starting area of the screen so you never feel very punished for failing, which only encourages you to keep at it. The game is rewarding with the screen progression, every time I encountered a tough part, nothing felt better then getting the screen to change to a new area as I knew I was making progress. My partner also got the game and despite her being a very casual gamer, she is enjoying the game a lot, and seems to have the same feeling I do when she gets passed a difficult part. So if the difficulty scares you, give it a go if you can, you may be surprised by how enjoyable it is despite the difficulty.

    Controls - I started using a keyboard and even after doing some personal key binding, it just did not work for me, so I switched to a controller. Because you need to make some precise moves in the game, using the analogue stick can lead to many mistakes, where you mean to go straight left, you might shoot diagonally up to the left which can be a little annoying. You won't have this issue with the keyboard as you are pressing individually keys (not a stick) but again, I just couldn't get into using a keyboard. I would occasionally switch to using my D-Pad on the controller but only for the more complicated sections. This is a nit pick really though, ultimately I got around this without too much issues.

    Graphics - Pixel graphics! You cannot go wrong, you don't get facial features or anything on our characters, its not gonna be super detailed, but I enjoy games that look like this. Very simple but charming all at the same time. There character expressions in the dialogue screen are fantastic though, there is a few different versions for each character and all of them are adorable.

    Music - Loved it, very catchy and beautiful tunes to listen to as you play, some are better than others but this is a definite positive in my book.

    Final Rating - I had a great time with this game. It definitely is difficult and did lead me to some groans of anger, but for the most part I was having such a fantastic time, I beat the game in just two days because I could not stop playing it, only thing that would stop me was my personal life or work (mostly work). Definitely worth giving this game a try, you can find it for a reasonably cheap price as it isn't a very long game if you just play the base game (about 10-15 hours), but you can do all the additional stuff which will definitely extend your playtime by quite a bit, but yes, definitely give it a go!

    Amazing game. I love the way they deal with the subject of depression with respect. The characters are amazing too.

    Sometimes even tears started to show (from the story, not difficulty, which was pretty hard though :D), the ending is a bit too long.

    A fun platformer experience that’s definitely challenging, but makes you feel incredible when you’re finally able to zip through some of the more difficult sections. The story is pretty good but made me feel like I’d need to watch a lore video to understand the game’s symbolism (apparently it’s a trans allegory, but as a trans person I never understood that interpretation). There’s also some sections where I wasn’t sure what to do even though the rest of the game clearly isn’t a puzzle platformer, but aside from those few issues, it’s overall a very fun game that isn’t too long but has a myriad of challenges for those who want that. Tight controls, lovable characters, amazing level design: this game has it all. Also some of the best music in all of videogames. It does have flaws, but as it stands it's the best 2d platformer I've ever played and it isn't really close, so I feel like I have to give it a 10. After playing the game for 115 hours, I've beaten it 5 times and have no doubt I'll do it again some time in the future. Play this game. Expand

    Buenísimo, un juegazo de plataformas que encima puedes encontrar a un muy buen precio. La banda sonora, el arte, los personajes que te encuentras, el lore que tiene... Todo lo que tiene este juego es excelente.

    Amazing game.
    It has some of the best 2D controls I've ever seen, a beautiful artstile and a story that deals with struggles of anxiety and depression. This game is hard, but when you finish a chapter youbwill feel acomplished.

    I actually only stumbled across the game because of the soundtrack... Liked it very much, however I got stuck quite often. Especially watching speedruns of this game is soo satisfying!

    This is both my favourite game and OST of all time. The gameplay is refined, the pixel art is gorgeous, the story is simplistic yet thoughtful, THE MUSIC.

    Maddy Thorson and Lena Raine are both people I hold in deep regard and respect for and this is their magnum opus.

    A charming precision platformer with a pleasant story about mental health. Gorgeous graphics, beautiful music, and fantastic platforming had me coming back for more despite my thousand deaths.

    Celeste has a lot going for it: virtuoso level design, top notch pixel art, fantastic chiptune soundtrack, an overall smart design, huge speedrunning potential and some deeper meaning (climbing the mountain as a metaphor of overcoming depression). Be aware though that it requires flawless precision and you will count your deaths in thousands. [04/2018, p.53]

    Along with its charming 2D retro look and awesome soundtrack the game cast a spell on me with its authentic characters.
