Tactical strategy meets RPG elements in Capes, a game that leans heavily on superhero tropes to build its own world. While it excels in tactical combat and synergy between heroes, its lack of mission variety and limited hero customization hold it back from true greatness.

The narrative itself, while presenting some interesting twists on the genre, also spins its wheels during several sections, resulting in a story that outstays its welcome approximately halfway through its runtime of 40 hours or so.

Capes is a good enough game, but lacks the necessary distinction to go up, up and away.

Tactically challenging, but in terms of content rather trivial superhero battles.

Capes makes a great first impression as an original superhero tactics title that feels fresh, tight, and responsive. The turn-based battle system controls well and is easy to pick up, while also being so confident in its smooth player induction that things quickly start getting spicy. The roster of cape-less heroes all look, sound, and play satisfyingly distinct from one another and make choosing your four heroes for a given mission a daunting task. Players who like their turn-based XCOM-like titles to be lean, mean, and brain-meltingly precise will be sucked in for the first six-to-nine hours. After that, the tactical puzzles give way to what are essentially trial-and-error horde-survival missions that betray this title’s ambitions of doing anything interesting with the systems or story.

A tactical turn-based game without randomness and covers. While it's attempt to diverge from the path of XCOM is commendable, the lackluster story, monotonous gameplay, and content composition remind us why XCOM remains the king of turn-based tactical games.

It’s got a great idea but it doesn’t come close to living up to its promise, and you’re better off playing any number of other superhero games or XCOM-alikes.

Capes offers solid turn-based strategy with cool skill synergy and a nice hero design. However, Spitfire Interactive's debut suffers from clear weaknesses in terms of staging, overview and character depth.

Capes mostly overcomes its cliches, lack of customization, and limited scope thanks to its strategic gameplay that will test the mettle of even the most hardened of turn-based tactics veterans.

Capes is an XCOM with super heroes where the superheroes are the problem to solve.

Capes starts off with an interesting superhero premise of a dystopian city that is controlled by the villains. At the start, the gameplay can be rewarding and engaging, while the characters are well voice-acted, and the game has some nice tactical gameplay until the mid-game. However, things don’t manage to carry through and the latter parts of the game leave much to be desired. Those looking for a new superhero strategy game will get some enjoyment out of Capes, but could easily find themselves hoping there was more to it.
