Call of Duty: World War II is a generic FPS shooter set during World War II. From the landing at Normandy to the push to the Rhine, you and your band of brothers™ are off to save the free world from the Nazis. Through trials and trevails, you will yadda yadda.

World War II games have a major flaw: we already know what happens. The course of the war is already set, because it’s based in history. While the actual particular events can be made up, we know the general flow of things, and so it is very hard to surprise the audience in any meaningful way. Moreover, the audience rather EXPECTS to see many things out of a World War II game, such as the assault on the beaches of Normandy, or the Battle of the Bulge in a snowy forest around Christmas, so we not only know what is going to happen, we expect to see it.

What this means, however, is that it is very hard to get all that attached to the events – it’s literally history. The characters in the game are all affable enough, but they could be… well, anyone, really. They’re meant to be stand ins for all the men who fought during World War II, and they work in that job, but at the same time, it all just kind of feels like we’re going through the motions at this point.

This is compounded by the fact that World War II needs to play in a certain way to be historically accurate, which means that the weapons we use are not going to be particularly exciting or novel. They are a little bit clunkier than modern day FPS weapons by intent, and that’s fine, but the end result is that we’re playing a FPS using rather standard weapons in a standard war that cannot surprise us in any way.

And for some reason, this game contains collectibles, which, if you go searching for them, interrupt the gameplay for no good reason. Why are these in a game like this? The heroic actions at least made sense – saving someone or accepting someone’s surrender seems like reasonable optional things that slot nicely into the core gameplay – but searching for random items in levels is just not fun in a game like this.

The net result of all of this is a game that is like a bowl of oatmeal – it’s fine, there’s nothing WRONG with oatmeal, but we know exactly what we’re getting, and sadly, there’s no cinnamon in sight to spice it up, so it’s a bit bland and watery.

So it is with this game. The controls are a fine example of modern FPS design, running around, sliding, crouching or going prone, walking up behind enemies for stealth kills, climbing up waist-high walls by jumping at them – but there’s nothing added here to spice things up. The story has only one possible way it can go, the particulars aren’t strong enough to really make me care about the characters (though at least I can remember their personalities), and the gameplay is bog standard.

It’s kind of impossible to recommend something like this, but it was not bad to go through. It was just kind of forgettable.

As for the multiplayer… honestly, I thought it was pretty bad. I’ve never really liked super low time to kill, and the multiplayer has that in spades. I actually did surprisingly well in the small amount of it I played – I saw a lot of other new players, probably because of the Humble Monthly – but at the same time, it never really engaged me all that much. Getting shot at kills you almost faster than you can react a great deal of the time, and the same applies to shooting at enemies, and the characters are all pretty generic, without anything to spice them up or make them all that interesting or distinctive. It is what it is.

The zombies was honestly even worse. It’s amazing to me how, after Left 4 Dead did coop zombies so well, companies continue to make games that are vastly worse. This is just a horde shooting coop multiplayer mode with a single map (well, unless you fork over more money for more maps) with a series of things you need to do on it which aren’t explained very well. It was just kind of a mess to play, and I did not have a lot of fun playing it. The gameplay was only alright and the confusion about what I was supposed to do made it more annoying than anything else.

For a game with such nice graphics, it felt strangely unambitious. Black Ops 3 at least tried to do some interesting things; this just kind of felt like the most generic shooter possible. It wasn’t bad, but it never rose to the level of good. It was just kind of bland.

You know i've been in the Marketing industry for over 16 years and it still rings true to this day that Gamers are the easiest to influence into buying crap and the Publishers know this only too well.

They used a tragic event to sell a game and most millenials cannot even tell the difference between an Iron Cross and a Swastika let alone the history behind either one so what does it mattter?

The fact you even bought into this pile of trash in the first place blows the "Fool me once" line out of the water because with gamers were are onto "Fool me 17 times..." and still have no end in sight.

The single player campaign is mediocre. The one thing I couldn't get out of my head - I've seen all this before. As for the multiplayer... It is an underwhelming experience.

This is the last time I had bought a CoD game. I hoped returning to the roots would save the franchise, but I was wrong. RIP

It is nearly impossible to play multiplayer because your are lost in the console menu. It lasts hours before you find out where and how you can open a game or join with a friend.

The single player campaign is ok, but sometimes frustrating.

I was enjoying the game until the Collateral Damage mission. It is unplayable on PC; life is too short to get this frustrated because of a video game. The controls on PC in this mission seems like a very poor port from consoles. Deleted after about 40% of the game.

Before I get to the annoying stuff, lemme talk what this game does good/new in comparison to older cod shooters... (I played waw, bo2 and bo3 before)

Headquarters: Yes, this may not be the newest thing in gaming history, a lot of other games like destiny had that before ... but to cod this was an actual refreshing idea... Shooting range, a place where you can try out several score streaks, a 1 v 1 place... This is stuff I really liked to see!

Zombies: Yes, people may b like - the **** you talking about! This is not the zombies we wanted but tbh I really loved the idea of having sum sort of little side campaign as zombie mode. This was sth a little bit new and more casual easter egg hunting made the mode a better option for a bigger amount of people. Of course, in order to achieve the best possible ending, you had to find hidden stuff and that's were zombies goes back to the og ee hunting. The only thing that was quite cheap were the ground spawns... especially those overused jumpscares spawns... those were good for the first time playign the zombies mode, but that's actually it... The boss fight was quite interesting even tho it felt a little bit too easy.

The only good mission in the campaing - the pilot mission: Taking over some mechanics from older plane fight simulators, this was a quite refreshing mission. The controls sometimes felt clunky but in overall I had more fun than the rest of the campaign.

Now lets go to the bad stuff!

Repetitive COD gene: This game is, as from the community expected nothing special... it was overhyped and nothing new.

Campaign: I like the sort of Brotherhood part in the campaign but the rest of it is quite BORING. It's short, it's repetitive AND the ending was the most anticlimatic bs ever... Especially the stealth missions were horrible... Over the top cutscenes and there were no really interesting characters in there.

The tank mission: Holy crap, this one was hella annoying to play through... The controls felt clunky and it also felt like this tank wasn't rly responding to my pissed of button smashing... I wish there was on option to get out of the tank and destroy the enemy tank with explosives or stuff... In end this mission was hella anticlimatic and painful...

Multiplayer... The core of every cod: Welp - the new stuff is no fun (war mode, it's literally the worst mode ingame). Like every other cod you get to the point where you just have no fun BUT in this game - it only took me 10 hours to say - NOPE, not gonna do that! We have the classic modes like tdm, dom and snd, every map has nearly the same layout... The loadout system, now changed into divisions, gives you NO freedom of creating fun classes... it's like this game tried to be less casual and more competitive... There are also just 3 weapons that you wanna use in the future: Bar, PPsh and the kar... the lmgs are again not worth the time, the shotguns are hella annoying but also useless... The thing that made bo3 good, was that every gun was hella interesting to use and to play with - you had soo much freedom in creating custom classes ... where is that? That was literally the only thing that made cod's multiplayer have such a high replay value... For me this game gets a 4/10... I would've love to give it less than 4, thats how pissed I was for spending 60 euro on that game - but i just can't ignore how fun it sometimes was and how they at least tried to do sth. new...

After a total amount of 50 hours, I stopped playing that game.

My main problem with this supposed next generation of maps is that they are no different than last gen, where is the dynamic settings? why cant there be a physical changes to the map randomly i.e. a battle on a sinking battleship or a war around you with buildings exploding? its just lazy and derriviative but compared to what Activision charges for season pass / map packs its just insulting!

Loot crates are obviously there, disgusting to have them opening on normandy batlefield in your "social area" and visable to all, there really isnt an "enough money earned here" is there!

Overall I feel more down on the franchise now than ever before, it needs to go away and have a high level rethink about COD's future as come next year, COD will not be a pre order or even a day one purchase for me!

I'm going to focus on the multiplayer part of this game, and I can sum it up in two words. Just awful.

From a technical standpoint this game is very poorly made. Not only are the player hitboxes worse in this game than any previous CoD I've played (just about all of them since MW), but the game itself is so buggy and hitchy my FPS go from 130 down to 40 and shoot right back up to 130.

I have also experienced shadow and texture pop-in, and more than one hard freeze.

Add to this the fact that it took 3 system reboots and finally a launch in safe mode just to get the game to launch to the main menu.

I am seriously disappointed with this game, seems like Activision doesn't really care about quality anymore so long as they can get a studio to crank out another installment every single year.

Sledgehammer games did an amazing job on MW3, it is to this day one of my favorite in the franchise (MW2 takes the top spot) but this installment just doesn't seem to live up to the quality I hav experienced in other Sledgehammer games.

I will say that the campaign was very good, and had what I thought was the best narrative of any CoD game in the last decade. I did play the campaign on the PS4 version however, as even with the lower fidelity and 30FPS, I had a noticeably more stable experience.

In the end it is the technical difficulties that ruined the experience for me.

I noticed that the developers wanted to prioritize the multiplayer mode, which, in my opinion, should not even exist. And "Zombie Mode" is very rough.

The graphics are great. Gameplay without any innovation, is the same as the other modern CoD.

CoD: WWII does well in showing off cinematics and has solid and fun gameplay, but stops right there. Because the story is so bland this game could just as well be another plastic looking game where you're fighting some made-up terrorists like in some previous CoD-titles. CoD isn't trying to make you live through WWII, but trying to rob you of not only your money but also a hope of getting closer to WWII. The producers haven't done their research, they didn't care enough about a solid campaign. But hey, there's a nazi zombie mode!

Reason why I'm giving this game 3 out of 10 is because graphics are kinda good actually (although I believe BF 1 still looks better), and visual effects. Whole campaign is one over the top action scene after another. There is absolutely nothing original about it, zero freedom of movement. For heaven's sake you can't even open the doors until your stupid AI scripted friends do it for you. Apparently you are too stupid to do it.

AI is dumb and completely scripted like everything else. Sometimes they ignore you from 2m, sometimes they have laser accuracy, effectively killing all the fun of gunplay. Shame really.

Visually the game is ok, on par with 2017 games, but then again, there are better looking games as well. Characters look good, but they are some of the most annoying characters ever in a WWII shooter. They are just painfully stereotypical...

At the end... I haven't finished this game and I never will. And just to show why exactly everything in this game is devoid of any shape of inspiration and originality, play the tank mission. Here it's obvious that even people that made it never even played it. If you want to finish it, you have set your controls to maximum sensitivity or else you cannot even turn your turret fast enough to aim. Completely and utterly broken mission.

Graphics are good, sound is ok but gameplay is the worst I've seen. Damn heavily scripted and bugged : on several missions you could die with no reasons. Boring : the game is not even damn fun to play and short for the single player part, really short.

Also game mechanics are so weird : smgs and even assault rifles requiring half a charger to kill a man, only headsots will save you from constant weapon reload. Scenarios dont make a sense : stukas runs in 1945 ? Weapons : PPSH that soviet smg being used by germans ? Tank battle: was a pain to play, not fun and unrealistic : Sherman should penetrate a panzer 4 from the front, even more those later sherman models (firefly in the game it seems...), same with that mission were you play a P-47 fighter plane : uncontrollable and boring.
Crap, this sh*t just makes me want to play Medal of honor allied assault they were largely inspired by made ... 12 years ago...

They tried to keep up with Battlefield 1, they failed miserably. We don't need another CoD for the next 20 years, i'm sure of that.

Crap game overall, awful controls, pathetic AI (partner AI is among the worst I have seen so far, partners won't shoot enemies even while standing just next to them). Add that a shameful and horrible voice acting, and you have a combo for disaster. I started liking this game until I saw the atrocious AI and the artificially cheap difficulty. They managed to ruin a game that had lots ofCrap game overall, awful controls, pathetic AI (partner AI is among the worst I have seen so far, partners won't shoot enemies even while standing just next to them). They managed to ruin a game that had lots of potential, the characters are boring and uninteresting, and honestly, I don't care about their personalities, they act so cliche it reminds me to the awful cinematics of BF 1, a bunch of retards doing the voice acting, I WANT TO PLAY A **** GAME NOT WATCH A ****G MOVIE!
Expect hours and hours of boring and annoying cinematics. Damn, I miss the old days with simple characters, not these stupid npcs that have the ego so high, same crap with BF 1, I DON'T GIVE A **** ABOUT THE PERSONALITIES OF THE CHARACTERS!
Overall, one of the worst COD games to date, a spit in the face for fans that loved the classic
Soo **** boring, that level where you gotta be that retarded woman and show documents to answer stupid questions, is so damn boring it almost put me to sleep. Looks like a blatant and cheap copy of Medal of Honor, that stupid **** and the documents level are almost the same as the medal of honor games for the original Playstation. I hope they added the women to copy MOH and not a blatant and embarrasing attempt to promote feminsim via this piece of **** game. I am sad man cause this game had lots of potential but they ruined everything with bullet sponges enemies and atrocious gameplay plus stupid AI, even for free this game is a **** scam

If the last two to three years can be remembered for anything its "unmemorable" games. The baton in the race to the bottom has been picked up by COD WWII.

This is really a banal remix of any combination of previous WWII games you care to mention with big budget cinematic's and prettier graphics. Like so many other titles I rather get the feeling this in itself is enough to make a game

What does help is creative varied game play and an acknowledgement that the USA was not the only country to fight the Axis. This gets a quick mention at the start in truth but then its USA all the way. No option whatsoever to play another allied or axis nation which would have made the game a lot more diverse and interesting.

Whats also flawed in this game is like so many others its reliance on "push button" cut scenes where you try to destroy your keyboard attempting to do something pointless like a early on and quite frankly God awful tussle with a German soldier armed with a bayonet. This could and in my opinion should have been left out. It added nothing and the clumsy approach taken to key/mouse combinations was a usability nightmare.

In short, in my opinion, this is mediocre fare that's repetitive and feels awkward due to the weird mouse key combo's used in the annoying, on best left in the recycle bin ", interactive" cut scenes. 2/10 from me.

What a bad way to throw heck of a comeback...I always dreamed of playing WW2 in such graphics and been waiting for Activiton to go back to the old classics but they failed badly. I never play and care about multiplayer. I mostly play COD games for the SP.

    PROS.
    -Great graphics.
-Fantastic atmosphere it like being in the battlefield it's alive.
    -Medical kits.
    -Voice acting.
    -PC Optimized.
    CONS.
-The Singelplayer is like 4h max.
-It mostly car chase and holding possession and shooting. (Like a mobile game)
-Too much of a cinematic play.
-Only 6 chapters that feels rushed and very short.
    -Nothing special about the story.

I still think infinite Warfare the worst COD still and this takes the second place. If only it was longer and had gameplay like the old ones this would been amazing. Activiton should find itself another series or just quit gaming! Its embarrassing really.

A twitch shooter with lootboxes, dlc and an alternate history WW2 theme. I mean, who wouldn't want to play as a black woman in service of the Wehrmacht.

The new Call of Duty is like a shopping list, in which the devs list one second-rate cliché after another. It's not always for the sake of it, but it's already making the WWII unique that everybody should play. [Issue#280]

A magnificent, but also a sympathetic, unpretentious return to the roots of the series. Yet the campaign is short-lived, and your next experience depends on how much you enjoy the multiplayer and/or shooting Nazi zombies.
