PC GamerEasily one of the most engrossing shooters ever made. [Holiday 2008, p.70]
-
An excellent and authentic single player experience, combining great game play based on squad leadership with compelling story telling.
-
Brother’s in Arms Hell’s Highway is a beautiful and engrossing cinematic experience that is as much fun to watch, as it is to play. Games rarely are this enjoyable and I can't remember the last time I started up a game and couldn't stop playing it.
-
Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway offers the best gameplay and narrative of all three parts of the series. It's a thrilling shooter, tells a haunting story that shouldn't leave anyone untouched and the cut scenes are fantastic. The AI has a few bugs, but most of the time the other soldiers act convincingly intelligent. The best "Brothers in Arms" so far.
-
PC Zone UKFor all its faults Hell's Highway is a rich experience that should be played through at least twice, because in completing the game you just want to keep going. [Dec 2008, p.68]
-
PC Gamer UKGrippnig small scale stories of WWII. [Nov 2008, p.84]
-
Hell's Highway proves to be an exciting, engaging ride despite a few bumps along the way.
-
World War II is coming back into your living room with Hell's Highway, a solid, squad-based tactical shooter. Aside from some minor glitches and a lack of decent multiplayer the game is stunning, with a movie-like story that is gripping and emotional. A must buy for WWII shooter fans, and fans of the series.
-
So what is it that makes a great “anti-war-shooter”? Is it its heart? Or its brain? Personally, I think it’s probably both, which is exactly what keeps BiA:HH from being a 90+ title. After all the story and the presentation may be great, but the gameplay itself is still a bit repetitive and doesn’t bring anything entirely new to the series.
-
The fantastic storytelling coupled with an equally impressive score though will make you forget your grievances with the finished product, and there are just enough extras in the campaign to make completionists return a couple times to get them all.
-
Clocking in at around 10 hours, Hell’s Highway provides tons of drama but brings with it some new gameplay elements that don’t mesh with the series philosophy.
-
LEVEL (Czech Republic)Infernally absorbing game with not only stunning graphics but also a compelling story and a reasonable amount of pathos. If all WWII games come this way we’ll never be bored. Be prepared for flying body parts and mutilated bodies - this game is not for sissies! [Oct 2008]
-
Hell’s Highway is a solid shooter with some great elements, but the AI issues are very problematic, especially for a squad-based shooter.
-
Play (Poland)New and vastly improved targeting model allows now (at last!) to hit every pixel you see. The game isn't so hard as the first part, unless you have to fight alone - you'll be positively beaming with joy when you see your boys again. And losing every one of the team members hurts just as much as it should. [Oct 2008]
-
PC PowerPlayOverall a good mix of realistic action and tactical gameplay will appeal to the Private Ryans rather than the Rambos. [Dec 2008, p.73]
-
Total PC GamingHell's Highway is held back by tunnel-vision solo play, but that shouldn't put you off. [Issue#12, p.55]
-
PC FormatA proper war game that tries to have its rations and eat them, and chokes because of that. [Dec 2008, p.94]
-
Brothers In Arms: Hell's Highway does an excellent job of presenting the story of these men, and is as compelling as many war movies.
-
There are some technical problems and crash bugs that need ironed out (especially for ATI users, from the sound of it), and the feel and responsiveness of the controls could have been better. The AI is lacking, but those special slow-motion moments when you score a particularly nasty headshot or a grenade blows a guy into thirds are rewarding and add to the cinematic feel.
-
If you’re a newcomer to the series, it’s recommended that you play the first two before delving into this one, as you’ll miss out on the developed story up to that point. If you’re looking for a new World War II multiplayer experience, it would be best to skip over Hell’s Highway and wait for something a little more multiplayer-oriented.
-
Edge MagazineGearbox has made a game that is stable and complete, if hugely unrefined in places, with an under-exploited but sound core of tactical squad combat. [Nov 2008, p.93]
-
Nobody is suggesting that such a marriage of styles and boundary pushing storytelling shouldn’t be attempted in gaming, and in that Hell’s Highway is incredibly brave, but arguably any effort to be both an enjoyable first person shooter and stony-faced anti-war tale is doomed from the outset. Something must be compromised, it’s just a shame that in this case it happens to be the whole package.
