When you play alone, the experience immediately becomes mediocre, but if I wanted to play online games, I wouldn't go and look at this series. Unfortunately, this is one of the problems with today's games. Design a game either for online or for single player. When you try to do both, we come across a wasted potential game and like Borderlands that can't deliver anything properly. Expand

When I first delved into "Borderlands," it was with the expectation of experiencing the same awesomely-structured story as in "Tales from the Borderlands." However, I soon realized that the story in "Borderlands" progresses more slowly, at times feeling stagnant. Distinguishing side-quests from main ones wasn't always clear, offering a mixed perspective on this aspect.

The vast wasteland environment was awe-inspiring initially, but over time, it became somewhat repetitive. The lack of diversity in the landscape was a minor drawback that, while not detracting from the overall experience, could have been improved.

The A.I. in the game was, to be frank, a letdown. It was often frustrating to deal with such a subpar A.I., and the loot drops frequently proved to be mostly useless. The rarity of valuable items might have been rewarding for some players, but for me, it was a source of frustration mixed with the excitement of finally obtaining a useful piece of gear.

The initial driving mechanics were also something I struggled with. However, as I spent more time in the game, I gradually adapted to the controls. Others may find themselves experiencing the same learning curve, but it ultimately becomes more manageable with practice.

Despite these flaws, "Borderlands" possesses a unique charm that sets it apart from other games. The humor and well-crafted characters are simply amazing, drawing players into the world of Pandora. The gameplay itself is an absolute blast, offering fun-filled action that keeps you hooked. While the first playthrough might seem relatively easy, the second one presents a challenge, particularly with formidable bosses, especially in the DLCs.

I believe "Borderlands" is best experienced with friends in co-op mode, adding an extra layer of enjoyment to the overall adventure. For RPG and FPS enthusiasts, this game holds the potential for an incredibly fun and memorable journey. Despite its imperfections, the allure of "Borderlands" is undeniable, and its unique experience is something that has the power to captivate players and keep them coming back for more.

I had fairly high hopes for Borderlands, but ultimately it was a disappointment with what felt like tons of untapped potential. In short: A pretty cool and original world, alright shooting mechanics, mostly bland writing, and horribly grindy quests.

I had fairly high hopes for Borderlands, but ultimately it was a disappointment with what felt like tons of untapped potential. In short: A pretty cool and original world, alright shooting mechanics, mostly bland writing, and horribly grindy quests.

    Positive:
    - The aesthetic design of the world and characters is original and has a unique and cool vibe; I believe this is the main factor why this game spawned a classic franchise
    - The shooting mechanics are pretty decent, with sufficient (excessive?) variety in weapons
    - The music adds to the atmosphere, but it feels like there are only a few main tracks, so it gets pretty repetitive
    - About 20% of the writing is pretty fun (especially Claptraps made me laugh a lot)

    Negative:
    - About 80% of the writing is extremely bland, including both "dialogues" (there aren't proper dialogues in the game) and quests, which are mostly pointless (go kill that guy, go collect this amount of that item)
    - Quests are released sequentially so you end up ha.ving to go through the same areas several times, making it boring and tedious
    - The majority of the world is lifeless, with only a few named NPC throughout the game; the world is way too big for the amount of NPCs and content in it
    - Enemies are mostly extremely repetitive, and except for some quest-related characters, respawn indefinitely (!). Combined with the running back and forth for quests, it means you have to kill the exact same groups of enemies several times. Extremely boring and pointless.
    - Enemy levels are tailored to the predicted player level pretty much in all areas of the game. I completed all quests in the early and middle phases of the game, so quite quickly ended up 2-3 levels ahead of the curve, and remained up to 6-7 levels above for the remainder of the game, which meant that most of the game was ridiculously easy, and in the latter third or so I was virtually invulnerable. At least it meant I could run through hordes of enemies ignoring them to complete another grindy quest a bit faster.
    - There is way too much loot everywhere (it fills up the backpack in 5mins tops), and most of it is worthless and pointless. It's also scattered randomly, so it doesn't reward proper exploration in any way.
    - The movement mechanics are bugged, as landing on any slope steeper than very shallow makes you stuck, forcing you to wait until the character slowly glitches/slides off the slope
    - The UI is nice in terms of aesthetics, but the ergonomy is poor (it might make sense for a controller, but not for mouse+keyboard)

The Ugly Child of the Franchise
Before I get into what I liked and disliked, I'm not saying the game is necessarily terrible, but it would be a sin to compare it to the titles that came after.
Also, this is a review of the Enhanced version. Complaints 1.) The Setting: Boring, dull, brown. That's all the game is. You spend 95% of the game in a f*cking landfill on a dust bowl planet.

    Complaints
    1.) The Setting:
Boring, dull, brown. That's all the game is. You spend 95% of the game in a f*cking landfill on a dust bowl planet. Very, very little effort went into making anything look different apart from the very last area.
    2.) The Quests:
It feels like this game's only goal is to make you feel tired and overburdened with quests. I sh*t you not, walking into New Haven you are given 15 NEW QUESTS. Only about 3 or 4 of the side quests in this game were even interesting. They're all fetch this, grab that missions.
    3.) The Story:
Without giving away any spoilers, this is all you need to know: The first 10% and last 10% of the story are the only good parts. I'm not joking. The other 80% of the narrative is laughably weak.
    4.) The Combat:
I know what you're thinking, "The combat? WHAT? It's Borderlands!", indeed, it aged about as well as cow tiddy squirt. If your gun has less than 95% accuracy, sell it. Because you ain't hittin SH*T. But on a serious note, the gunplay just doesn't feel good(which is the whole point of the game).

    Praises
    1.) Short Playtime:
The only praise I can think to give this game is for the relatively short amount of time it takes to finish it. I mean this game is truly the embodiment of boring. If it wasn't for the padded playtime due to needing to grind to level up enough for the story missions, you could beat it within 4hrs tops.

    Conclusion
It may have been a gem back in 2009, but now it's a f*cking turd.

There's many an idea in Borderlands. Many an idea, and little development. The subheading should simply read "living Qarren's teenage years all over again." And that's where this game catches you. It grabs hold of you early on, drags you through its gallery of neat ideas and then shoves you through the back door where you turn around and see it was all a set. Like a film set, except of course, vidjya gams instead.
It's important that I state here that I played the 2019 Enhanced version, and I understand that many problems I had with the game are actually a result of that. So keep in mind going forward that not all statements I make are representative of the original experience, and I recommend sticking to that version.
Let's start with the main selling point that everyone talks about: that joke about Tannis' underwear that keeps coming up...
I mean the guns. Yea, the fanbase of this game definitely wouldn't have gotten too excited about that other thing...
The wide variety of guns resulting from randomised stats provides the meat of this gameplay loop. And the potatoes too if I were to wager. However, this also presents a problem à la that underdevelopment of ideas I mentioned. While upgrading weapons can prove to be a fun little reward, 3 problems arise from this system.
    1) It's unbalanced: I got weapons half way through the game that carried me the entire remainder of the experience, hence removing the biggest reward system in place (though, I understand this is exacerbated in the enhanced version).
    2) It's shallow: the guns don't truly play differently, even across weapon types (I used a combat rifle over my sniper rifle for sniping because it was genuinely better at it). The randomised stats don't provide anything more than bigger numbers for the sake of bigger numbers. Enemy health goes up and so too must damage, the end.
I've seen some shallow things in my life, but this system is starting to Border on Tinder lands.
    3) It's annoying and dissonant: the game otherwise portrays itself as an FPS with RPG elements, as demonstrated by the critical system which rewards skill in aiming and timing over stats. AND YET accuracy is a randomised stat on weapons! Why reward skill in a game that is programmed to regularly neglect your input? I swear sometimes the bullets actually came out backwards in order to avoid a target at point-blank range just to fulfil the accuracy stat quota for misses.
Accuracy is of particular annoyance when using iron sights or scopes as being hit knocks your camera around. And as the game is all about 1-4 of you taking on 20-30 people (who have aim tracking) at once; you are constantly being hit.
    4) I can't count
Now I played this game alone because making friends is for successful people, and I clearly don't associate with success if my life choices tell you anything. I understand the game is more enjoyable with comrades, and is designed around that fact. Singleplayer works, but do yourself a favour and bring along some people to talk to because guns aren't the only underdevelopment in this puberty of a game.
Quests are also shallow and fighting through the same enemy-respawning landscape back and forth to fetch something leaves a lot of time for conversation. Otherwise it's self-reflection, and nobody wants that. This goes double, triple and quadruple for the second half of the game when the initial charm has worn off and you're left with a barebones plot, some overpowered weapons and the same 3-4 enemy types to kill over and over. The final act will likely leave you with enough thinking room while playing to write a PhD awarding thesis. So at least Borderlands is an educational game.
Other annoyances include invisible walls, and models with hit boxes that are too big for random junk strewn on the floor meaning you need to be an Olympic pole-vaulter to get over some random tin can on the ground you didn't even see. Also, a small FoV with too much happening around you, and skags (everything about them).
Like most things, the game is not without merit however. The only exceptions to that rule are reviews written by Qarren, and the Justice League film. The cell-shaded art style is nice. I'll always advocate for art direction over graphical fidelity, and as such Borderlands still looks good today. Levelling skills is rewarding. The music is also good if you don't get sick of the same 3 songs on repeat for the entire 20+ hour length. But, let's be honest with ourselves; we've all listened to a song on repeat for 20+ hours. Mine was 'Entry of the Gladiators' because I'm such a clown. I'm not funny, but people can't take me seriously regardless.
Borderlands is a good time waster with friends. The merits outweigh the issues, but there are many an issue.
    Seriously, f^ck skags.

The game throws you into the action quite quickly and you don't get along very well. The story is here, but don't expect cut-scenes. After all, this is something I blamed on Far Cry 2. Repetitive missions and no cut-scenes that would take you into the action. But I don't mind here, because in RPG it's something else in my opinion. So while missions can be repetitive, you can still level and improve with them, which is the magic of RPGs. This is one big point of the game that I want to draw your attention to. If you like RPGs, even repetitive ones, such as multiplayer WOWko, or new Assassins from Origins and beyond, then this is the game for you. But if you don't have to keep this style of the same missions you've been doing for hours to improve, then avoid the game. On the one hand, Borderlands is smart and thinks of those players who just don't need repeating RPG-style missions, and there's a co-op that's one of the best I've ever seen. You can go through the game with a friend and it will be even more fun. So to sum it up. Borderlands is a great game that has wonderful locations, a great arsenal of weapons and lots of hours of fun. Whether you play alone or with a friend. Worse optimization worries you here and there, or at least in my case it was. The game sometimes starts to cut illogically, and the only way to run smoothly again to match the performance of your hardware is to turn the game off and on. The settings here and there were also not the best, because somehow I was bothered by the possibility of changing the resolution, where even though you are already playing at 59Hz, the game constantly shows you that you are playing at 50Hz. But the whole thing is nothing terrible and it is quite easy to survive and it is not something that would spoil your gaming experience. You can finish the game in about 20 hours, but you can spend 60 hours with side tasks in the game, which I always and especially for RPG titles welcome when it is possible to extend the game with various side games. Great game for me, which I recommend. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In regards to the single-player campaign, the game has enough weapon variety to fit different play-styles, but the overall gameplay experience feels really repetitive in the long run, with the whole thing being watered down to fetch-quests or "get from point A to point B to point C and etc". The only replayability value lies in the different characters you choose at the start of the game, each one with unique skill trees to unlock.
Storywise, the game shows potential with its presentation, right from the cell-shaded graphics to the cast of insane characters that you meet through the journey. The enemies, varying from psycho raiders, to regular alien wildlife and even alien ghosts, also fall on that creative side of loony personalities. However, the game still manages to disappoint by hyping up the final confrontation to be a gunfight against this warlord you heard of the entire game, and instead, it's some dollar-store Cthulhu, falling directly into the trope of "Giant Space Flea from Nowhere".
Overrall, the game shows good potential but lacks a proper execution of the ideas it presents. A good option if you're looking for simple, mindless (quite literally) fun without much else going on.

It has a great implemented co-op that quite reward you playing with a higher level, but doesn't really take anything major experience in doing so. They also manage to compromise a simple menu while keeping every tab of it highly useful.

Recognizing that this is a Remastered version, They must have tweaked all the problems that I could encounter. Also, seeing that the graphics are pretty much neutral, I don't see how can there's been much to improve. I could list a lot of things that they could do better, but I'm certain that it was already implemented at the sequel.

If this edition was identical to what they released in 2009, then my score is more or less justifiable.

Gameplay-wise you have here a hybrid between FPS and RPG, with four classes and coherent skill trees, nothing to say here except that everything is well thought. As in classic RPGs, fighting will give you loot, or you can buy weapons with the money you collect from main and secondary missions. Everything is well-balanced (xp progression, enemy power as you advance through the game...), except maybe that it is rather common to find the better loot during missions, making the selling machines kinda useless.

It is to be noted that the game is quite long, especially if you do all the side missions, and even more with the DLCs. Don't pay attention to my hour count, I played a long time on a hard copy before registering it into Steam. I believe it took me no less than 30 hours to reach the end of the game (doing side missions all along) and the two DLCs I went through (Dr. Ned and General Knoxx) were additional 5 to 10 hours long each, I would say.

Last but not least: you should know that the essence of the game is the multiplayer. As a single player it is "just" a good game, but as a crew of 4 you can cooperate to do the whole game together and this is definitely a blast.

Highly recommended, like the 2 and the pre-sequel.

    This is a classic.
If not a perfect game, it stands on the same level as other PC games of the 00's like Bioshock or Oblvion.
As with these games, it can feel dated or clunky but they are important landmarks and deserve credit for either creating an entire genre or making it even more popular than it already was.

I need a thematically coherent sequel.

I don't understand the hype. Some people like Diablo-like grind, but for me it was way to repetitive to give it a better score. I think the setting allows for the richer content than for what is in game. The maps are almost empty, apart from the enemies.

    o Jacobse cove (DLC)

    o Claptrap's New Robot Revo-lution (DLC)

Gameplay: Now this is where Borderlands shines. The gameplay itself is a lot of fun and challenging with four playable classes with their own abilities and specialties. All of them are really enjoyable to play as and it's made better that you can play with 2 to 4 player co-op, of course solo is possible and great too, but co-op really heightens the experience. Collecting the weapons the game offers by looting, purchasing or killing enemies is really addictive with different rarities, weapons types and manufacturers that give their weapons unique features and preferences. Enemy variation is excellent ranging from bandits, alien guardians to the hostile wildlife that inhabits Pandora. The combat is satisfying between enemies too. Such as seeing them explode into little pieces or having their head pop like a grape from a headshot... bloody brilliant. The game takes roughly 15-20 hours to complete when you do everything, with the option as well to do a second playthrough with all your gear and a tougher challenge, unfortunately though there's no endgame for a game that has RPG elements. The world you explore reminds me a lot about Mad Max (heavy inspiration) which I do like, but it gets repetitive seeing so many desert areas in Pandora. NPC interactions as well is bare-minimum and only really serve just to hand you a load of quests.

Sound and Music: The music composed does a good job capturing the hostility and harsh apocalyptic world of Pandora's desert. It doesn't work as well when you try and listen to it outside of the game, but a very atmospheric soundtrack that fits the purpose intended. The license used are very good with 'AIn't No Rest for The Wicked' by 'Caged Elephant' a great track. The voice acting is pretty good with dark humor in the dialogue. The sound effects from the wildlife's roars and screeching to sounds of the guns is good too. Overall very crisp sounds all round.

Performance and Graphics: The graphics have aged very well for a 10 year old game and still look very pleasing to this day. Although some textures do look very dated, it's the cell-shaded comic-book art style that really makes this game look impressive and charming. I found the game ran very well for most part with maybe a bit of slowdown once or twice. Just found it annoying there was no FOV slider for an FPS on PC, but I digress...

Verdict: Overall I always seem to have a great time playing Borderlands. Some people find Borderlands 1 very plain and simple compared to what has come after. I disagree and think it has some really fun gameplay, great graphics, good audio and a lot of replay value. My only main grudges would be the weak RPG elements not being used to their full potential, the poorly told story and the repetitive environments. Overall a really good game that's worth giving a go.

Borderlands is my favorite game series of all time ( so this review is gonna be hella positive) not that this game dosen't have its flaws.

Story: so you are treasure hunters already this game is setting it self apart. the story tells you exactly how the games gonna play in the first couple minutes. its a shooter and you loot things. the player character is left vague but fitting often times the npcs will call you as the vaultunter ( so you can play one of 4 memorable characters) your goal right from the start is the vault. a fairly well written mcguffin due to the fact that you are "promised" loot when you reach the vault that's the whole point of the game AND that's why the ending was absolutely the most disappointing video game ending of all time. the main charcters development since its a shooter rpg hybrid is during game play and is less scripted than most.
    Story: 7.5/10

Wordlbuilding : world building in this game is up there with some of the bests. from the vault to the crimson lance , to all the gun manufactures that seemingly run everything. Sirens are woman that have special powers and have some connection to the vaults. all the clap traps . the psychos. hell even in the dlc you see that npcs feel like people just living in this world , most of them have relationships with other npcs but this is really only expanded upon in the dlc. borderlands world is wonderful and rich and the best part is it feels like there is more we haven't seen. other planets are mentioned . we meet one gun company's private military , do others have similar army's ? the world expands on a satisfying amount BUT leaves enough for sequels to expand upon.
    World building: 9/10

Graphics: this game has aged really well thanks to the decision to make it cell shadded and comic booky ( and then release comics to expand upon the lore even more witch is what i call an outstanding move) and it uses that comic bookstyle and mixes with post apocalypses and dark humor you have a hell of a style and thats made this game age like fine wine even if its age is still present due mostly to the tech.
    Graphics: 9/10

Gameplay: this game could have gotten away with a lot of short cuts that it didn't take. the shooting feels as fluent as call of duty and with the massive amount of guns in the sand box thats a huge deal. everything you find is useful weather it be a gun a sheild , money, ammo, a relic or a class mod , if you wont use it you can sell it. you are constantly on the hunt for better guns. and the guns them selves are fun with all the different manufactures and parts you can find on the weapons its very seldom you will pick up the same gun twice ( i have but only ever low level guns ) and all the parts and manufactures affect how the gun behaves. i wont go into detail about what manufacturers do what but they are all fairly well balanced. Each character has an active skill , siren runs fast and is invisable and dose an aoe when using her ability, the hunter sends his bird after enemies , Brick punches things And the soldier has a turret the skills are useful but compared to bl2 and presequel the skills kinda suck but its the first game in the series so its forgivable and each charcter has 3 skill paths to go down so even if you play the soldier one play through you can play him again and still have a different character mixed with the loot loop ( and pretty satisfying guns) makes this game just addictive to play.
    Gameplay: 9.5/10

Sound design: the music is not perfect but its has its moments and aint no rest for the wicked is a great song to open on and started a trend of mostly underrated alt rock songs used to open the game. guns sound great and if a game with this amount of guns can sound good then your linear shooter sure as hell better have good sounds in it. the voice acting in the main game is just pretty good but the dlc is where i think the game comes into its own more with its comedy and you can tell that the cast is just having a blast with this game, this game sounds like it was a joy to be a character in ( actor interviews will tell you that it was infarct a fun project)
    sound design: 8.5/10

    7.5+9+9+9.5+8.5 = 43.5
    43.5/5= 8.7

The mechanics of the game are easy to adapt, the controls and options are almost the generics of any FPS. However, the system is more like what is common in RPG's, where enemies have a life bar that decreases as the damage is inflicted that is greater or less according to your stats.

What's more, Borderlands has one of the most creative achievements I've seen so far, it requires you to get matched in a lobby with a Gearbox' game dev or someone who've already done that. The turn of the millennium, however, saw a sudden drop in designers intelligence, either because the new ones now came from game design schools, or because of the mobile-phone apocalypse. They couldn't differentiate hardware anymore, write appropriate code, so PC games lost their save/load essential features, replaced by lazy checkpoints bullfaeces. Idiots bought this crap en masse nonetheless (after all, they used mobile phones too,) so the trend-wreck persisted. Finally, we started having open worlds. Which is great. Except that some of them still don't provide the very, very basic freedom of saves.

Borderlands is one of those retarded babies. You don't want to try things anymore, like jumping from a cliff or testing your grenades in close quarters. You don't want to explore, waste resources or do the crazy stunts you usually do in a sandbox. This is not a sandbox ; its an open world only in name.

But let's face it, we would endure it if the game was good enough. Unfortunately, Borderlands is all about grinding. Oh, it's pretty, yes, but it's so boring that I gave up after less than 2 hours. There's no hook, no fun in either gameplay or story. All it can boast about is its millions of weapons, which obviously means a few templates with countless, insignificant variations. Quantity over quality.

Some say it's good in coop mode. Good for them. The solo play is a stinking grind-fest. Frankly, the FPS genre is one of the easiest to design and implement, and these guys failed miserably. Skip a couple of years and play Rage instead. Or if you just want to shoot things and collect weapons, even Fallout 3 does is better, while it's built like an RPG.

Borderlands wears a humorous and addictive cel-shaded coat to cover up its repetitiveness, uninteresting story and one hell of an unsatisfying boss battle.

Borderlands boasts great cel-shaded graphics, and fun gameplay, especially on co-op mode. The worlds featured in the game look good for the most part, and it mixes FPS with open-world very well, offering a solid gaming experience. The gameplay itself isn't really different from what others of it's genre have to offer, and after a while, this causes the game to start feeling repetitive.

Good "Feel" to movement and weapon handling. Landscape and opponents get somewhat repetitive. Loot becomes less thrilling towards the end Siren's special ability is utterly useless. Does not motivate very much for a 2nd playthrough.

Had a great time with the first Borderlands. The gameplay is tight and tons of fun with a nice variety of weapons to choose from. The main issues with the game are that while the gameplay is fun it is incredibly repetitive and the whole plot and story felt a bit weak with an insanely lackluster ending. I'd give it a 7.5/10 it's a blast if you don't expect a masterpiece.

The dialogues, the plot, the setting and the art design cancel out much of the negatives like repetitive gameplay. Borderlands is a brilliant shooter with its flaws

It's okay, but often dull. Gunplay feels fine but nothing about this game makes me want to keep playing it. Sorting through piles of loot to find the best stats is not my idea of fun. Humor is not so great (with one particularly annoying character), but not as bad as BL2.

Part of this is due to the fact that, by the time I got around to playing this (around 2016), the rest of the world lost interest. The missions became repetitive very quickly, and the wide range of guns followed suit after a few hours. I appreciate the attempt to meld the genres of FPS and RPG, but it seemed to only take the least interesting aspects of the role-playing genre (numbers, wheee...) and cram them into it. Every mission was, "Follow the green diamond, kill/find the things that you see, and then return, as the green diamond will have moved." I have since given up on this game, but from what I've seen, the sequel appears to have hammered out some of the elements that I find unappealing. Expand

The Narrative in Borderlands (In my opinion) Isn't extremely important to have a good time. I usually dislike RPG's with quite a passion. However, The RPG elements in Borderlands work absolutely perfectly. I played through with a Soldier, And mainly maxed out my 1st skill tree, Which definitely worked for my single player walkthrough. My university lecturer recommended this game to play with friends, However, If you do want to play solo, It Isn't broken in the slightest. But destroying things with 4 people would have been a great blast.

The loot system in this game is incredible. Never once did I feel like looking at all of the loot was a waste of time, And I was very excited to see what I would find every time something dropped. Even when Half of it actually turned out to be useless.

The solo campaign took me about 17 Hours, and there's 100's more hours of sidequests which you can do. So its safe to say this game definitely isn't lacking in content.

My only gripe about this game is I'm a massive soundtrack nerd. And the soundtrack in the game is rather bland and samey, Which for me kinda sucked, But thats nothing when you put it next to the awesome gameplay and comedy.

Would recommend to at least play through once.

    9/10 Claptraps.

I enjoyed the weapons the most. They feel and fire great, with a lot of variety. There's a finite amount of cash, so most of your weapons will be found via looting. And there is a TON of stuff to loot. Any fallen enemy drops loot, from bandits to wild animals. And if you find a stash, well, you just might land yourself a rare. Sniper rifles have a fixed zoom, though.

The game world is huge and drab; a real wasteland. The visual style is still unique (even with Telltale using a similar hand-drawn, cell-shaded look for most of their games). It was a little jarring at first, but after a few hours I found the graphics very appealing. And light on system resources. Getting around the huge world isn't a problem; Scooter's vehicle terminals are everywhere, making it very easy to “Git you one!” But why are we traversing the gameworld? Fetch-quests, mostly. “Bring me 20 fish!” “Destroy 3 fuel tanks!” “Find 20 parts!” They're not all fetch-quests, of course, but there's quite a bit of padding. The attraction was supposed to lie in the combat (and looting) while completing the quests. Which is fine, except the combat is easy. If you do a few side-quests and suddenly find yourself 2 or more levels higher than recommended, you'll breeze through the missions. Co-op play is supposed to mean harder enemies and better loot; I found co-op even easier.

I'd heard so much about how good the characters of Borderlands are, and they're there, but barely; the characters are the start- and end-points of the missions, but that's it. You'll barely even see a cut-scene with them (except in some of the DLC). Claptraps are everywhere, and they're obviously designed to be cute. What about the story? Well, you're looking for a vault; think of it as a box. You're on a planet named “Pandora”. Put the two together, and hopefully you won't be too disappointed when you finally get to the vault after an endless level of “guardians”.

So, I have mixed feelings about Borderlands. I found it tremendously fun in co-op, though, so if you have a few friends who want to run around together shooting and looting, grab it by all means. If you're planning to solo most of it, it will be a solitary, easy grind for loot.

"Wait, you forgot about your reference to 'recycled bosses'!"

    Read on.

    On DLC:
There are four DLC, all of them substantial additions to the main game; campaigns are large (as are the rewards) and well worth the purchase – especially if you're buying the game for its co-op.

Some problems with the DLC, though:
    - No fast travel. Wait, wtf? That's right. You fast travel to the start of the DLC campaign, but within the DLC, there is no fast-travel, meaning you'll spend a lot of time running (or driving). If you pass a save-point deep within a level, and quit your game, the next time you load your save, you'll be back at the beginning of the DLC, and have to run / drive all the way back to where you were when you saved.
    - RECYCLED BOSSES. You'll re-fight the boss from the main campaign, and in the Claptrap Robot Revolution DLC, you'll also re-fight the bosses from The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned and The Secret Armory of General Knoxx – sometimes even multiple times! Borderlands tries to be self-deprecating as it does this, but it doesn't change the fact that they're re-using assets. It reeks of being cheap. Did the devs seriously think we would swallow the EXACT same boss three times without complaining? Come on.

Get the GOTY edition. When on sale, it's only a few dollars more, and it includes everything.

On my own, I mostly play Mordecai with a rapid-fire Torment repeater, a multi-pellet Masher revolver and an explosive Wrath sniper rifle. Once I got these three, the whole game is a joyful ride (plus, repeaters and revolvers feed the same weapon skill bar, so why not taking advantage of it?)

I also found the "alternate stories" really interesting each one on its own. I really love the mood and pacing of Jacob's Cove (the zombiesque twist on Borderlands).

Even if the more recent instances of the title (namely Borderlands 2 and Borderlands Prequel) are better balanced and provide more challenges, the original title is still strong on its feet.

    Complete Review @ http://blurbarians.blogspot.pt/2015/05/borderlands.html#more

    — Some good humor in some spots in the game, especially in the Knoxx DLC. Wacky characters and some funny references.

    — It feels pretty satisfying to melt enemies and bosses with insane amounts of bullets. Ammo is abundant in the world, especially when you can cheat the RNG making it so you always get bullets for the weapon types you want. After a while, bullets become unnecessary if you use an Ammo Regeneration mod, making it less annoying since you don’t have to keep looting it.

    — Looting is this game’s major annoyance. Press a button to loot an item, and then repeat the process for each other item scattered on the ground. Certain enemies, like bosses, drop a ton of stuff, making it so you’ll spend most of your time in Pandora looking at the ground and looting. You can hold the loot button to execute an area loot, but the range is extremely short and you inventory is very small, meaning you’ll stop being able to loot items after half a dozen of these, at best.

    — The loot/weapon system is a mess. Weapons have a huge array of variable stats, including shooting speed, magazine ammo capacity, inventory ammo capacity, damage per bullet, bullet accuracy, bullet lag (I’ll come back to this one later) and elemental damage. The first time you play through the game, you obviously won’t have any idea of which elements are effective against each type of enemy. Making things worse, you can only equip four weapons at once (late game, 2 weapons early game), meaning you will also spend a lot of time swapping guns every time you enter a different area. No, you don’t get to use your favorite gun all of the time. It just doesn’t work. Also, seeing as your inventory is very small even after fully upgraded (by saving Claptraps) most of it will be filled with guns of various types and elements that you will need, making it so you have close to zero inventory space for loot and have to keep running back to vending machines to sell your crap. Loot rarity is also mostly non-functional, since, thanks to randomly assigned bonuses, it is possible for the crappiest low level weapon be stupidly good until 20 levels later, due to RNG.

    — Bullet lag. That’s right. Some genius at Gearbox thought it was a good idea to make each type of gun have a different bullet lag. If you shoot a medium distance object with a rifle, it will take way longer that it’s supposed to for the bullet to reach it. Even with a sniper, it’s near impossible to hit a non-stationary enemy at long distance. And forget about hitting moving targets with SMGs, unless you’re literally on their faces. What were they thinking, honestly.

    — Quick Travel is a blessing, but it’s not present in the Knoxx DLC, which by coincidence, has Kilometers of highways and makes you travel for a long time every time a mission asks you to go somewhere (very often). Also the missions tend to be repetitive and sometimes you have to kill every boss in an enemy base every time you get a mission to do anything in said base. Also, having to go through the base game twice and then going through all the DLCs to reach the level cap. Also, weird level sync where monsters are always 2-3 levels above you making them excessively hard to kill……

    — Heavy Texture popping, especially after loadings, collision detection problems, where a small rock or piece of metal on the floor will bring you to a grinding halt, which means certain death against most bosses.

    — Most achievements involve hours of mindless grinding and some are virtually impossible unless you use exploits or design flaws. And even then the Coliseum achievements take several hours of uninterrupted play.

    — Multiplayer scaling is weird, making every enemy have several times more health, meaning that unless you and the other players are always focusing fire, each individual enemy becomes near-impossible to kill, unless you have infinite ammo or an ammo regen mod.

So there you have it. There’s no doubt the game has a lot of problems. I haven’t found time to start on Borderlands 2 yet, but I trust many of these issues are no longer present in the sequel. That being said it was a fairly poor first attempt taking into account that we’re talking about Gearbox. Buy at your own risk.

You can also pick up junk all the time that you just sell cause that's what most things drop. Its got some cool Comic Book art style that I haven't seen much of. Quite a bit of different weapons but none really have any thing cool about them there just your standard Sniper, Sub, Pistol, Rocket launcher with some stupid effects on them like fire to burn things with skin and others to take down shields trying to add depth to something just doesn't seem fun or meaning full the game play just ends up being mediocre and reused over and over. They should of spent more time on sound effects and feel of the weapons to drag you in more some of the gore is cool if your in to that which i wish there was way more. Overall feel is just boring after a few hours for me I ended up rushing threw the quests running past everything I could I was so sick of it and just wanted it to end.

The story wasn't that great as i didn't real i had to pay attention to it and seemed a bit boring. However, the game is still a hell of a lot of fun and is a great basis for the franchise to start on. Expand

Fantastic game. Great graphics with a lot of style, absolutely amazing characters with witty and funny dialogues, good enemies variety with some very cool bosses and decent enough story (some people didn't like the ending, but I thought it was brilliant). The shooting mechanics are pretty good, and the loot search if awesome. The DLCs, contrary to most DLCs practice out there, are alsoFantastic game. Note that it really should be played with friends, it gets even A LOT more fun.

What a great FPS this is. It might be a bit frustrating and confusing in the beginning, but one you get used to its specifics and learn your way around how to survive, it is nothing less than a pure pleasure. You will be in home with the weapon-generation system and you will wait for the store update like it is santa claus. The atmosphere of the game is anywhere between frantic shooting and calmly traversing of new lands while looking around corners for stuff. It has shortcomings of course, but for what it is, this one might even be my favorite game of all time. Expand

Game play is great very fun and a decent improvement from BL2. Maps are entertaining and guns are cooler and more fun, but the story was done horribly. This game is the size of two BL2 add ons. At the end of the game you are left high and dry expecting more action, but instead you are left with a piece of **** cliff hanger. So many questions go unanswered. Not crazy about this game. Gameplay tends to get repetitive. Go there, shoot that. Storyline is intriguing and the guns pack a nice punch per occasion. That's about it. Classic example of an over hyped game.

Well, there not much to say about Borderlands: 50% FPS, 50% RPG: 100% fun! The personalities of the NPC 's are also unbelievable creative and versatile. The level design gets unilateral after a while, which is due to the vegetation of Pandora, but you can avoid that by simply buying one of the DLC 's (like "The zombie island of doctor NED") which aren't very expensive and make the game a lot more varied. It's something action role-playing game fans looking for an experience more up-close and brutal than genre entries of the third-person variety should have a blast with, and one of the more memorable products of 2009.
  2. With tons of weapons to find, a great co-op system, fantastic art, and a whole bunch of exploding bodies, Borderlands is worth your money. Even when I feel that the game is starting to get repetitive, there's something about it that keeps me playing.
  3. I think you'll agree that when you've got guns blazing from four players at once and loot is flying everywhere, Borderlands easily makes up for any perceived shortcomings.
