When I first delved into "Borderlands," it was with the expectation of experiencing the same awesomely-structured story as in "Tales from the Borderlands." However, I soon realized that the story in "Borderlands" progresses more slowly, at times feeling stagnant. Distinguishing side-quests from main ones wasn't always clear, offering a mixed perspective on this aspect.

The vast wasteland environment was awe-inspiring initially, but over time, it became somewhat repetitive. The lack of diversity in the landscape was a minor drawback that, while not detracting from the overall experience, could have been improved.

The A.I. in the game was, to be frank, a letdown. It was often frustrating to deal with such a subpar A.I., and the loot drops frequently proved to be mostly useless. The rarity of valuable items might have been rewarding for some players, but for me, it was a source of frustration mixed with the excitement of finally obtaining a useful piece of gear.

The initial driving mechanics were also something I struggled with. However, as I spent more time in the game, I gradually adapted to the controls. Others may find themselves experiencing the same learning curve, but it ultimately becomes more manageable with practice.

Despite these flaws, "Borderlands" possesses a unique charm that sets it apart from other games. The humor and well-crafted characters are simply amazing, drawing players into the world of Pandora. The gameplay itself is an absolute blast, offering fun-filled action that keeps you hooked. While the first playthrough might seem relatively easy, the second one presents a challenge, particularly with formidable bosses, especially in the DLCs.

I believe "Borderlands" is best experienced with friends in co-op mode, adding an extra layer of enjoyment to the overall adventure. For RPG and FPS enthusiasts, this game holds the potential for an incredibly fun and memorable journey. Despite its imperfections, the allure of "Borderlands" is undeniable, and its unique experience is something that has the power to captivate players and keep them coming back for more.

A great game that has the fundamentals of a looter shooter down. There's simple but satisfying gameplay, however, the story is just there and the characters are rather bland. The game has solid animations and forgettable music. Borderlands is a very enjoyable game.

The game throws you into the action quite quickly and you don't get along very well. The story is here, but don't expect cut-scenes. After all, this is something I blamed on Far Cry 2. Repetitive missions and no cut-scenes that would take you into the action. But I don't mind here, because in RPG it's something else in my opinion. So while missions can be repetitive, you can still level and improve with them, which is the magic of RPGs. This is one big point of the game that I want to draw your attention to. If you like RPGs, even repetitive ones, such as multiplayer WOWko, or new Assassins from Origins and beyond, then this is the game for you. But if you don't have to keep this style of the same missions you've been doing for hours to improve, then avoid the game. On the one hand, Borderlands is smart and thinks of those players who just don't need repeating RPG-style missions, and there's a co-op that's one of the best I've ever seen. You can go through the game with a friend and it will be even more fun. So to sum it up. Borderlands is a great game that has wonderful locations, a great arsenal of weapons and lots of hours of fun. Whether you play alone or with a friend. Worse optimization worries you here and there, or at least in my case it was. The game sometimes starts to cut illogically, and the only way to run smoothly again to match the performance of your hardware is to turn the game off and on. The settings here and there were also not the best, because somehow I was bothered by the possibility of changing the resolution, where even though you are already playing at 59Hz, the game constantly shows you that you are playing at 50Hz. But the whole thing is nothing terrible and it is quite easy to survive and it is not something that would spoil your gaming experience. You can finish the game in about 20 hours, but you can spend 60 hours with side tasks in the game, which I always and especially for RPG titles welcome when it is possible to extend the game with various side games. Great game for me, which I recommend. Expand

This is a very fun game to play with friends. The gameplay is satisfying, and the story - while it's there - doesn't really matter that much when you're just having fun blasting guns into hordes of human and monster enemies.

It has a great implemented co-op that quite reward you playing with a higher level, but doesn't really take anything major experience in doing so. They also manage to compromise a simple menu while keeping every tab of it highly useful.

Recognizing that this is a Remastered version, They must have tweaked all the problems that I could encounter. Also, seeing that the graphics are pretty much neutral, I don't see how can there's been much to improve. I could list a lot of things that they could do better, but I'm certain that it was already implemented at the sequel.

If this edition was identical to what they released in 2009, then my score is more or less justifiable.

Gameplay-wise you have here a hybrid between FPS and RPG, with four classes and coherent skill trees, nothing to say here except that everything is well thought. As in classic RPGs, fighting will give you loot, or you can buy weapons with the money you collect from main and secondary missions. Everything is well-balanced (xp progression, enemy power as you advance through the game...), except maybe that it is rather common to find the better loot during missions, making the selling machines kinda useless.

It is to be noted that the game is quite long, especially if you do all the side missions, and even more with the DLCs. Don't pay attention to my hour count, I played a long time on a hard copy before registering it into Steam. I believe it took me no less than 30 hours to reach the end of the game (doing side missions all along) and the two DLCs I went through (Dr. Ned and General Knoxx) were additional 5 to 10 hours long each, I would say.

Last but not least: you should know that the essence of the game is the multiplayer. As a single player it is "just" a good game, but as a crew of 4 you can cooperate to do the whole game together and this is definitely a blast.

Highly recommended, like the 2 and the pre-sequel.

    This is a classic.
If not a perfect game, it stands on the same level as other PC games of the 00's like Bioshock or Oblvion.
As with these games, it can feel dated or clunky but they are important landmarks and deserve credit for either creating an entire genre or making it even more popular than it already was.

I need a thematically coherent sequel.

Gameplay: Now this is where Borderlands shines. The gameplay itself is a lot of fun and challenging with four playable classes with their own abilities and specialties. All of them are really enjoyable to play as and it's made better that you can play with 2 to 4 player co-op, of course solo is possible and great too, but co-op really heightens the experience. Collecting the weapons the game offers by looting, purchasing or killing enemies is really addictive with different rarities, weapons types and manufacturers that give their weapons unique features and preferences. Enemy variation is excellent ranging from bandits, alien guardians to the hostile wildlife that inhabits Pandora. The combat is satisfying between enemies too. Such as seeing them explode into little pieces or having their head pop like a grape from a headshot... bloody brilliant. The game takes roughly 15-20 hours to complete when you do everything, with the option as well to do a second playthrough with all your gear and a tougher challenge, unfortunately though there's no endgame for a game that has RPG elements. The world you explore reminds me a lot about Mad Max (heavy inspiration) which I do like, but it gets repetitive seeing so many desert areas in Pandora. NPC interactions as well is bare-minimum and only really serve just to hand you a load of quests.

Sound and Music: The music composed does a good job capturing the hostility and harsh apocalyptic world of Pandora's desert. It doesn't work as well when you try and listen to it outside of the game, but a very atmospheric soundtrack that fits the purpose intended. The license used are very good with 'AIn't No Rest for The Wicked' by 'Caged Elephant' a great track. The voice acting is pretty good with dark humor in the dialogue. The sound effects from the wildlife's roars and screeching to sounds of the guns is good too. Overall very crisp sounds all round.

Performance and Graphics: The graphics have aged very well for a 10 year old game and still look very pleasing to this day. Although some textures do look very dated, it's the cell-shaded comic-book art style that really makes this game look impressive and charming. I found the game ran very well for most part with maybe a bit of slowdown once or twice. Just found it annoying there was no FOV slider for an FPS on PC, but I digress...

Verdict: Overall I always seem to have a great time playing Borderlands. Some people find Borderlands 1 very plain and simple compared to what has come after. I disagree and think it has some really fun gameplay, great graphics, good audio and a lot of replay value. My only main grudges would be the weak RPG elements not being used to their full potential, the poorly told story and the repetitive environments. Overall a really good game that's worth giving a go.

Borderlands is my favorite game series of all time ( so this review is gonna be hella positive) not that this game dosen't have its flaws.

Story: so you are treasure hunters already this game is setting it self apart. the story tells you exactly how the games gonna play in the first couple minutes. its a shooter and you loot things. the player character is left vague but fitting often times the npcs will call you as the vaultunter ( so you can play one of 4 memorable characters) your goal right from the start is the vault. a fairly well written mcguffin due to the fact that you are "promised" loot when you reach the vault that's the whole point of the game AND that's why the ending was absolutely the most disappointing video game ending of all time. the main charcters development since its a shooter rpg hybrid is during game play and is less scripted than most.
    Story: 7.5/10

Wordlbuilding : world building in this game is up there with some of the bests. from the vault to the crimson lance , to all the gun manufactures that seemingly run everything. Sirens are woman that have special powers and have some connection to the vaults. all the clap traps . the psychos. hell even in the dlc you see that npcs feel like people just living in this world , most of them have relationships with other npcs but this is really only expanded upon in the dlc. borderlands world is wonderful and rich and the best part is it feels like there is more we haven't seen. other planets are mentioned . we meet one gun company's private military , do others have similar army's ? the world expands on a satisfying amount BUT leaves enough for sequels to expand upon.
    World building: 9/10

Graphics: this game has aged really well thanks to the decision to make it cell shadded and comic booky ( and then release comics to expand upon the lore even more witch is what i call an outstanding move) and it uses that comic bookstyle and mixes with post apocalypses and dark humor you have a hell of a style and thats made this game age like fine wine even if its age is still present due mostly to the tech.
    Graphics: 9/10

Gameplay: this game could have gotten away with a lot of short cuts that it didn't take. the shooting feels as fluent as call of duty and with the massive amount of guns in the sand box thats a huge deal. everything you find is useful weather it be a gun a sheild , money, ammo, a relic or a class mod , if you wont use it you can sell it. you are constantly on the hunt for better guns. and the guns them selves are fun with all the different manufactures and parts you can find on the weapons its very seldom you will pick up the same gun twice ( i have but only ever low level guns ) and all the parts and manufactures affect how the gun behaves. i wont go into detail about what manufacturers do what but they are all fairly well balanced. Each character has an active skill , siren runs fast and is invisable and dose an aoe when using her ability, the hunter sends his bird after enemies , Brick punches things And the soldier has a turret the skills are useful but compared to bl2 and presequel the skills kinda suck but its the first game in the series so its forgivable and each charcter has 3 skill paths to go down so even if you play the soldier one play through you can play him again and still have a different character mixed with the loot loop ( and pretty satisfying guns) makes this game just addictive to play.
    Gameplay: 9.5/10

Sound design: the music is not perfect but its has its moments and aint no rest for the wicked is a great song to open on and started a trend of mostly underrated alt rock songs used to open the game. guns sound great and if a game with this amount of guns can sound good then your linear shooter sure as hell better have good sounds in it. the voice acting in the main game is just pretty good but the dlc is where i think the game comes into its own more with its comedy and you can tell that the cast is just having a blast with this game, this game sounds like it was a joy to be a character in ( actor interviews will tell you that it was infarct a fun project)
    sound design: 8.5/10

    7.5+9+9+9.5+8.5 = 43.5
    43.5/5= 8.7

The mechanics of the game are easy to adapt, the controls and options are almost the generics of any FPS. However, the system is more like what is common in RPG's, where enemies have a life bar that decreases as the damage is inflicted that is greater or less according to your stats.

Overall this is a awesome game with a lot to explore and do. Where you can easily spend a 20 hours plus to do the story. It is a "must have" to any Steam collector.

The controls are pretty nailed and solid on start up. Only thing I changed was putting my Melee on Mouse-3. Personal preference.

The Narrative in Borderlands (In my opinion) Isn't extremely important to have a good time. I usually dislike RPG's with quite a passion. However, The RPG elements in Borderlands work absolutely perfectly. I played through with a Soldier, And mainly maxed out my 1st skill tree, Which definitely worked for my single player walkthrough. My university lecturer recommended this game to play with friends, However, If you do want to play solo, It Isn't broken in the slightest. But destroying things with 4 people would have been a great blast.

The loot system in this game is incredible. Never once did I feel like looking at all of the loot was a waste of time, And I was very excited to see what I would find every time something dropped. Even when Half of it actually turned out to be useless.

The solo campaign took me about 17 Hours, and there's 100's more hours of sidequests which you can do. So its safe to say this game definitely isn't lacking in content.

My only gripe about this game is I'm a massive soundtrack nerd. And the soundtrack in the game is rather bland and samey, Which for me kinda sucked, But thats nothing when you put it next to the awesome gameplay and comedy.

Would recommend to at least play through once.

    9/10 Claptraps.

On my own, I mostly play Mordecai with a rapid-fire Torment repeater, a multi-pellet Masher revolver and an explosive Wrath sniper rifle. Once I got these three, the whole game is a joyful ride (plus, repeaters and revolvers feed the same weapon skill bar, so why not taking advantage of it?)

I also found the "alternate stories" really interesting each one on its own. I really love the mood and pacing of Jacob's Cove (the zombiesque twist on Borderlands).

Even if the more recent instances of the title (namely Borderlands 2 and Borderlands Prequel) are better balanced and provide more challenges, the original title is still strong on its feet.

However the bread and butter of this game is the guns and the game play. It is a wonderfully stylized FPS with a large load of RPG elements placed in it. The hordes of weapons you collect, buy, sell, drop, and keep are all really interesting. When you find a weapon that has a better fire rate, is more powerful, and is more accurate it really feels like a victory. "This game is a very fun shooter, but with flaws. I'll go over the good first. The combat is entertaining and a touch different than other shooters. You get to tweak your character with different abilities to make unique builds which change how your character plays. The game randomly generates weapons so everything that drops is unique and a possible great find, it keeps you looking for loot. These things make it fun to play and the graphics are done in an art style like animation cells which I really like, it looks superb. The bad things bring it down however. The game scales terribly. As you do quests and gain exp. you will level too fast and quickly become too powerful, tearing through groups of enemies far too easily. A second play through with tougher enemies is possible, but not fun. You will start much higher level than foes and there is no challenge. The game is lacking several graphics controls on the options menu, which is stupid because the devs put the coding for the controls in the files, they just didn't make buttons. You will have to edit the .ini file yourself to turn on things like v-sync and get a widescreen point of view. Very lazy on the devs part there. Instructions for doing this are easy to find and it's not hard to do, but I shouldn't have to. So, overall Borderlands is a fun game that ends up being far too easy to play and has some basic setup options missing, but obtainable with manual editing on the users part." -syrik, Sep 8 2011 (rated 4/10)

It is best played with a friend or three since the game gets tougher but the drops from enemies get better.

I would recommend playing this start to finish before jumping into its sequel.

This game is really great, it sort of has this old school feel to it with FPS like Doom but still maintaining some new gen mechanics. Fighting many monsters with big epic guns and explosions with additions of RPG elements to it with many skills that for the most part are nice but are mostly kind of boring with skills like: more damage, faster reload, etc etc, but you have a main action skill for each class which doesn't suck and adds a lot to the game, the main action skill is really fun to play around with and you can upgrade it with not only other skills but also making it elemental. It also has some elements from dungeon, hack and slash games such Diablo and Torchlight such as picking a class that has different abilities and killing a lot of enemies that might drop a new gun, shield, grenade mod and money, loot loot loot! Grab it all and sell the remaining to a store for extra cash. Pretty cool main quests although the storyline itself isn't that great and not so interesting but really, with a game like this, storyline is almost optional. You also get side missions for extra loot and EXP and some are really interesting. The amount of guns in this game is really large! Each gun has different damage, accuracy and fire rate, so you will go through many guns finding the one that suits you the most. Another thing I want to talk about is boss fights, how often do you see nowadays FPS with a boss fight that has a health meter? Not much, but Borderlands has it and it does a well job with it. The level design is also a pretty bright thing in the game, it's incredibly well done and don't even get me started on Pandora itself, IT'S MASSIVE! The level design is so well done it actually allows for secrets, which again, is one of the more old school elements in the game and a fun to find while happily exploring the game. The game also has CO-OP, find some three more friends and have an absolute blast with this game, lots of laughs and fun is always nice. Overall the game is a near masterpiece with some very minor down sides to it, get the game and start firing away!

The talent system is great for creating diversified gameplay, but at the higher levels, you have pretty much every talent that you want maxed out- I wish there were a few more 'choices' you made that would have a significant impact on your character. It ruins the fun of the game at the end which makes it not fun to play at the end of the second play through and subsequent DLC.

It has a lot in common with Diablo, the addictive nature of the loots gathering, but it's maybe more engaging, because of it's FPS nature. I would call it almost perfect, for what it is: a relatively mindless (because it doesn't require deep strategies), but not at all easy, very addictive game. It's between an 8 and a 9 for me. I'll go with 8, because it gets a bit too repetitive after a while: enemies look to similar, and they're not acting very smart. If Borderlands 2 has more varied enemies and a more complex AI, it can be a 9, and become *the* perfect addictive game, even beating Diablo. Expand

First of all, you got 4 classes to choose with 3 talent trees to choose, which actually can vary the gamestyle (but not a lot, and I will explain in a minute) Each class have an inventory which you can carry quite a lot of weapons (So far, I can carry over 30 of them), but also grenade's mods, which will change the property of your grenades, and also class mods in which you'll obtain various benefits and bonuses for specific talents and skills. Honestly all of this is very well though because mods are very handy and the talents can make things go better if you have a proper grenade mod (like dispersion, or sticky), but still I gotta admit one thing: the talents aren't a big deal. They differ the gamestyle yes, but still they aren't a BIG difference: each class can equip any weapon for example and even if a soldier has more bonuses while using shotguns and rifles, you'll be free to use any other weapon as you want, because the bonuses aren't a HUGE bonuses: they feel more like "useful perks". On the other side, you can only use the "perk'd" weapons and forget the rest: you're good with those basically, and the only benefit of using many weapon is that the more you use an SMG, stronger the damage you'll do...but it's not, again, a big difference, and there's too much freedom in my opinion. The rest of the talents are handy, but I still haven't seen any proper difference, except for the main skill, which are the main and biggest difference among the 4, and I apologize for the abuse of the words "difference", because that's what I felt while playing.. The game is structured like a RPG due to the levels (50, 69 with the dlc), loot system (with color-based grades), quests, dungeons and a plot, with respective end bosses and so on, All of this is actually fun to do because it's not linear and you can also re-do the dungeons for more weapons, and the quests are kinda quick and easy to do. The plot however is one of the biggest trolls I've ever seen (but I dare to say in a good way). The areas are many and actually huge and in fact you'll use vehicles very often to travel in order to reach the next points, although the driving sections are a bit clunky and hard to drive at times. The online co-op is nice but it lags a lot on my computer for some reasons and I never managed to make it work properly (it is the only game i own that lags this much online, so it's not me!). I should mention also that the DLC are actually more like "expansions": they add new areas, new weapons, new vehicles and one of them adds also more levels, and the prices for them were very good (I hardly buy DLCs, but these were a very nice addition). I honestly hated the first points I mentioned, because it doesn't make you replay another class due of their lack of "differences", but except for that I really have no complains: it's probably one of the longest and actually content-filled shooters I've owned, and even if the flaws I've mentioned are a bit annoying the game still remains huge for a shooter (i've finished it in about 20-30 hours, plus 10 hours more for levelling and doing the dlc's). Definitely a good shooter with a very high longevity, worth a good try if you ask me. Expand

Still, the missions require more than standing around shooting at things and the frenzy at which they throw things at you in different ways require that you change things up or die. Also, the weapons create a different play style based on who you are playing and what you find. If you find a gun that is really accurate and has a really high firing rate, it completely changes what skills you put your points into and how you play as opposed to finding a power house that blows people away but takes a long time between shots.
