I have never experienced anything like this in all of gaming. The engine is mind-blowing, and I've never REALLY felt like I'm just THERE in the world the same way I have with Boneworks. The physics, and the way you interact with the world, are the stars of the show here.

The story is lacking, the puzzles are fairly basic, the enemies are kind of dumb, and there are occasional glitches, but it's just SO MUCH FUN TO PLAY that I don't care. It will take you to another world and really convince you that you're there because the way in which you interact with it is so natural.

This is a real breakthrough in VR game engines, and I'm excited to see what Stress Level Zero does with it next. Just don't play this if you're new to VR or get sick from it easily. Nothing makes me VR sick, but I can see how it could make some people puke.

the game is good but it has some minor issues. Therese not too much you can mess up in a game like bone works but when it comes to level design they definitely could have used some more time. The version i played the game in didn't have in level checkpoints so you would have to redo a large portion of the game if you stopped playing mid level or crashes. Good thing is that the devsthe game is good but it has some minor issues. The version i played the game in didn't have in level checkpoints so you would have to redo a large portion of the game if you stopped playing mid level or crashes. Good thing is that the devs actually care about the game unlike some of the bigger company and have been putting out patches to get rid of some bumps in the game like the checkpoints. The game could also be more direct when it comes to story and game mechanics. The games earlier puzzles were real difficult at first but eventually you figure out that they work generally the same throughout the game. There are also some problems with the puzzles where something like an object or npc will get stuck in the wrong position and you can reset it so you'll either cheat or restart the level so you can get past the puzzle. The game also doesn't have much replay value with the main reason for going back through the game would be to get weapons for the arena were you can fight waves of enemy for fun and achievements which requires more mags and going through entire game sections again. As you can tell people really dont want to do this and have found ways to cheat and get infinite mags so you can unlock the gmod type guns and fly around the map for all the weapons. Its a nice game but over time they could add some type of dungeon mode to keep the game going for a while but until then im probably going to just wait until more stuff is added. Im positive that they'll add more modes because of the extra slots on the mode installer progression system thingy so who knows. game will kill time for 8 hours if your a master of puzzles and the arenas a good place to have fun but if your looking for some addicting game to play for a good while i would look at some other vr games. The combat felt good and satisfying tho the only enemy that was a bit hard to beat was the Zombie wich throws meta corruptions and the Omnimen. The only thing that hasnt been so great is that when you hold a enemy that it/he moves around alot and makes it very non fitting on how this game works. Relative from this I would say this is a 9/10! As most bugs are fixed and a Save Checkpoint system has been added the game is the Half Life of VR and has to get more attention from the real media critics who dont just base a game on if you get sick or not. Last but not least, the variety of firearms. There's just pistols and few different types of machine guns.

Other than that, this game is amazing. If you don't get motion sick easily, I highly recommend it. From what I've seen, updates are coming and they can perhaps fix all the issues I have with the game.

What the **** I see some reviews saying the campaign is short and let me ask you all did you even ****ing play the game. This is the longest vr campaign out right now. You can get every vr game on steam play them all and boneworks would still have the longest campaign. The enemies are AI are some of vr's best as they react to almost anything you do to them. Pushing a sword in ones chest? They will reach for the sword as you keep pushing it in. The enemies are so unique and smart you can even use a crablet as a weapon by shoving it on to a guys head. The controls and physics are vr's best as you can interact and grab, move, use as a weapon and climb just about anything. I never got motion sick a bit while playing so that's really not a problem, just get more used to VR before playing. there is even so much to do after beating the campaign it's one of the longest VR games out. after beating the game you can do a melee only run, beat arena, mess around in sandbox, get all the ammo, just unlock the dev gun and mess around in story mode. everyone saying the game is short has never been more wrong in their life, if a review says the game is short you really should just ignore it as you could play this game forever because mods for it are already coming out, and the devs have a 24 page list of new content they want to add in new updates. And the game is 30 dollars, quite small compared to most vr games. The fact that the critic's reviews are about a paragraph or sentence long tells you to not listen to them. Just ignore the people that get paid to give call of duty a 9 or 10 every year and take this game as a 10/10. TL;DL Endless content and cheap compared to most VR games. A must buy for every vr owner. This is the most realistic VR game in terms of body presence and freedom of interaction. The story is well written but requires lots of digging (similar to FNAF). There could be more content for the price but they update the game every few months and there is quite a budding mod scene.

But i have to admit that the story could be more clearer without reading all text on the walls.
If you have a VR headset this game is a must play for you, and if not i would not consider buying a VR headset just for this game, but if you want to continuously play other VR games it would be a geat deal.
Also if you play with HTC VIVE controllers holding items in game is so painful because you have to HOLD the grip or trigger button to hold an objekt.

Overall, it feels like an expanded 'tech demo' with narrative progressed using 2D video. Still a fun game, but far from the 'Killer App' we've been waiting for.

    Quick Impressions:
-After completing the main campaign, the game is about a ---7/10--- when compared to other VR games releasing in 2019 (Stormland, Asgard's Wrath). To those giving Boneworks a 10, what will you give Half Life:Alyx when it releases ? A 10 suggests Boneworks is 'just as good', which is disingenuous.
    - Inverse Kinematics (IK) body: Boneworks takes a minimalist approach to IK. While more established games like Asgard's Wrath and Stormland use onboot arm-length and height calibration, Boneworks only uses height calibration. With Boneworks only using height calibration, it not surprisingly leads to more glitches with the users ingame upper extremities (example, guns chamber has collisions with your arm).
-I will say BW reeks of Half Life and Portal influence.I am very disappointed the story narrative is told using 2D video, I'm surprised not many have mentioned this (I mean come on this is VR!)
-Gunplay is pretty good. The most satisfying part of the game for me. They really nailed the gun mechanics.
-Music is pretty good, I find myself spontaneously grooving down to some of the songs (I've read some say the music is better than the game)
-The 'OMG BW = JESUS/Killer app' hype is just that, hype. Although, it's still a fun game and I would recommend it. That said, I thought the RoadToVR review was pretty good (6/10) and if anything BW makes me more hyped for HL:Alyx (especially since HL should have a much deeper and meaningful story behind it)

The story is not really explained at the intro to the game. I would have liked some clue as to what my goal in the game is other than a cryptic intro video. The physics and actually being in a body in VR is just incredibly well done. The movement and environment interaction is how all first person VR games should be. It is very easy to learn and comfortable.

Boneworks is the best VR title I have played.

First let's start with the good things about this game:

    -Physics Engine
The Physics Engine in this game is a first in VR and will be unrivaled for quite some time. Like most games when you see a problem that needs to be solved, you come up with a solution. A first for VR, whatever solution you have is correct and can be done.

    -Weapons
The weapons in this game are on par with H3. They feel real and they feel good. The rifles especially feel good because of the weight they have compared to other weapons like pistols. The melee weapons are also enjoyable to use. My favorite has to be the half sword!

    -Character Body
This is definitely a controversial thing to include but it really does feel right. Too many VR games just feature hands as your method of control. Comparing that to Boneworks, the full body really brings presence and immersion into the gameworld. You ask yourself, how can I use my arms and legs to solve this level.

    Just one bad thing:

    -Story
The plot of the game was a bit lacking leaving the player confused about their part in it. Although lacking, I am positive they will bring some kind of expansion to it in later updates.

All in all, for about 15 hours of Story Content (If you want to get the developer gadgets) and endless time spent sandboxing the beautifully crafted levels, Boneworks is a MUST buy for Headset Owners (As long as you have your VR Legs) especially considering its price tag of $30.

This game is not perfect, but it is ambitious. Rather than a standard campaign story, this game relies more on lore and hidden details spanning across every game put out by the developer so far that ties all of them together into a shared universe that fans are still trying to unravel. There is some kind of a story, one that likely 90% of players will completely miss and all but the most dedicated will find to be an inscrutable mess. This game is not perfect, but it is ambitious. This small team out of LA has managed to make a game that is so deeply rooted in Half Life imagery and inspiration, this is not a Half Life game, but it is at least a slightly rougher cousin to a Half Life game. At this point in time, with Alyx released, it's impossible not to compare the two. Half Life: Alyx is more guided and polished, Boneworks is more freeform and physical. This game is not perfect, but it is ambitious. Most important, it's ambitious and fun. When it comes to beating an enemy or getting past an obstacle, if you can think of it, you can likely do it. Your arm may get stuck in a wall or something, but you'll have a good time if you understand and commit yourself to how this game gives player freedom.

Because you should not even count the campaign - the actual game that is delivered here.
it is very short, has boring and dumb enemies, bad puzzle design on the level of mediocre community created portal maps, and is just ugly like hell.

Half of the game looks like an old source engine test map with the infamous orange test textures, while the other half looks like someone's very first map, with missing lighting and moronic architecture.

You will have fun trying and mastering a few moves and stunts, until you have done them once.
Then you try a few combinations of them. Then you are done with the game and have seen everything it has to offer.

Without the hype and expectations, this could have been a nice surprise for an afternoon.
But as it is, it speaks more to the desperation for new VR experiences by those who bought into the hype, than actual talent and artistry from a game design perspective.

    Oh, and no:

It is not like Half Life.
It is not remotely like it.
It is not connected to it.
If you like Half Life, that will not make this vr toybox program any better to experience.

For the good, there some interesting environments and world building, art and assets are all good. There's some references to other properties which are pretty neat, and the humour seems on point (except towards the very end).

For the bad, first, the combat is boring. Enemy AI is bad, they regularly all pile into a wall and get stuck there, sometimes fail to aim at you, often just fall over by themselves and pose little to no threat. I have been using the guns almost exclusively since the game gave me them and I ended the game with 10000 bullets in reserve. I could use these bullets to buy things at the in-game vending machines, but they're mostly just the same guns or melee weapons that I already have, making the purchase kinda pointless. One vending machine toward the end has actually interesting weapons you see in the trailers locked behind the currency system that were so expensive they would require grinding to get. I had 10K just from playing the game, these items cost 15-25k each (Correction, looking up some stuff after, turns out the total ammo you have at the end of each level is saved and adds up to give you enough ammo for this point in the game. This means you need to collect most ammo pickups in all levels prior to this and not use (i.e. no shooting) any of it and finish the level. Which means you need to melee your way through these levels so....)

Melee is also just not fun. Weapons regularly get stuck and tangled in enemies and it's just not satisfying. If you've ever hit someone with a partially inflated balloon sword, that's pretty much what it feels like.

Level design leaves a lot to be desired. Puzzles are fairly standard physics puzzle affairs and the level are quite linear. The few non-linear areas there are to explore seem to lead to nothing, or just contain some random physics objects to play with, or ammo crates. The secrets there are don't feel rewarding and are often a complete nightmare to try and get thanks to the physics engine.

Speaking of the physics engine, its like Surgeon Simulator decided to become a FPS. Regularly your hands or something your holding will get caught on object in the environments, like the rungs of the ladder you're climbing or the boxes you're smashing. Optional puzzles for secret items are generally gated behind a physics based puzzle, which are frustration filled messes that repeatedly made me get mad, move on and leave the secrets behind. The game feels worse for its commitment to having a fully physics modeled body for your character, and the commitment to the physics engine in many other aspects. There was a moment toward the end where one of the last enemies killed themselves by falling down, standing back up, and seemingly colliding with their own headwear.

The inventory system is neat, with you having to reach points on your body to equip/unequip weapons and store ammo and items, but regularly it will take up to 5 tries for me to pull a gun off my back, and way too often will I accidentally pull an ammo clip out of the hip holster when trying to grab a nearby object, only to then be unable to place the damn thing back in the belt (Some of these may be a result of tracking on the Oculus Quest, but I've used similar mechanics in other games with ease before)

Some other things that bothered me where the enemy variety feeling lacking (its mostly "zombies" that walk/trip and fall at you, or dudes on rolling balls with guns) which is exacerbated by the AI, a "ha gotcha" moment where you're climbing something only to have it fall apart and have to climb all the way back up, climbing in general is very finicky with your arms r legs regularly getting caught on objects around you, and generally uninteresting weapons and items.

Overall, the game feels complete to me, but the many of the design decisions feel misguided, or, possibly they just don't gel with me personally, the overcommitment to the physics engine being the main perpetrator. If you were interested in this, I would recommend looking elsewhere to games like Superhot, or the VR mod for Half Life 1.

And I think this game has a lot to teach other devs, and raises some good questions and tries to answer them as best it can. Full physics for every object. Simulated weight. One button crouch/jump. But subtract the novelty and the 15 bonus points I assigned to said novelty, and you're left with a game that should score a 60 or lower.

The introductory area is far too long. You get to a point where a sign says "You should take a break every 30 min" or something along those lines. I had been playing for about that amount of time and wanted a break, so I quit the game - assuming the autosave worked at the "You should take a break" notice. Well, there is no autosave. There's no save system whatsoever. You have to play the full level in one go, and some of the levels can be over an hour - especially when looking for secrets and ammo. Also, I could find no way to pause the action in the game at all.

The story is ... forgettable. Did it have a story? It's so tacked on and thin that I forgot it while I was watching it. I honestly don't know what was going on. The "plot" serves absolutely no point other than to fool you into believing there's something worth mentally investing in around the next corner. There isn't. It has no plot points, and no resolution. There is some finality to it, and I won't spoil anything, but it's not an ending worth playing for. However, the gameplay is what makes the game worth playing.

Gameplay is a little rough around the edges.
It's not polished. But it is fun. At times it felt like my in-game arm was the floppy unpredictable physics arm that belonged to the player character Jill in 1998's Tresspasser, a game that also was technologically groundbreaking with lofty ideas about interaction and physics, but ultimately was forgotten due to high system requirements, frequent game bugs, and a particularly difficult to manage articulating arm. Boneworks manages to avoid some of the troubles that Tresspasser had, but not all of them, while not having nearly an evocative a setting as a Jurassic Park game. It is cutting new territory, and for that I give it a 75.

Note: I think Tresspasser would be the perfect IP to bring over to VR.

I've played a fair bit of the single player, but i've kinda wandered off. I'm not sure what the story is and i've been playing it a few hours now.

Performance for me is a bit lackluster using a 6GB RTX 2060, an intel i7-9750H and 16GB Ram.

I'm not going to recommend it just yet, maybe if changes are made. I would wager the only reason this games score is so high is due to voter manipulation, giving the game 10/10.

Even if one of the devs is left handed you would assume they have played plenty of other VR games an came across the "Left Hand Mode". Never encounteres such unfrieldy developers after asking a legit question for us leftys. The game may be good but beeing used to the left hand controls scheme for years it's very unpleasant to play. You can swap sticks ingame which is a step in the righ direction but jump will be on the same controller and will make this setup obsolete. As said before you can't configure your buttons ingame nor in SteamVR Input.

    - Big Boxes with grey developer texture (like literally anyone's first Hammer Map in Counter-Strike, no kidding)
    - High-Quality Models sprinkled in (idk why they scale the models into to comical levels)
    - Enemies are placed in the world carelessly and do nothing until you hit them
    - AI does not know how to move to your location and gets stuck at walls till you shoot them away
    - No Narrative, serious you really have no clue what's going on or what to do to progress (it's fine at the beginning where you learn the mechanic/environment but if you progress 4 hours and still feel like this then the game lost me)

Boneworks is overpriced at 30$ with what it offers.
It would be a better product if the ...
-> Narrative (what they advertise the game with) was much more believable and more fleshed out with some memorable character.
-> Puzzle ... just remove them ... none of them were enjoyable and I do not mean they were hard to solve , practically the usually "put that thing to a position on a map with your wibbly-wobbly body".
-> Inventory system would actually give me the item I needed in battle. Why the Developer thought to put your ammo under your pistol slot was a good idea is a mystery. Either leave it empty so you are able to grab ammo or navigate into your inventory screen every time you need ammo .
-> Weapons gave any indication of ammunition depletion like a slightly transparent number hovering around the gun (seriously the empty ammo only blinks like a Christmas tree if you wanna shoot the gun. You never know if you have bullets left).

I can't believe people actually giving this product a higher rating than Half-Life:Alyx.

Definiftely not perfect, and I'm still at the first mission, but I know it deserves a 10/10. For what it is, and the price you can get this for, it's an amazing experience you shouldn't miss out.

Also happens to be the future of gaming. Playing this amazing "tech demo" is like experiencing video games for the first time. It requires quite a patience as the mechanics are basically unheard of, and with some practice nearly everything feels perfect. The story isn't the best, mostly covered via writing on walls, video calls from co-workers, and cutscenes. When all this breaks though, and you're free to explore the amazing world of MythOS, there really isn't anything quite like it.

You NEED to play this game if you have a VR headset. I promise if you remain patient, and open to learning new mechanics.

the surface-level story is confusing and bad but the deeper lore is great. some secrets can be confusing and convoluted, and sometimes you'll spend forever on a secret thinking you'll unlock something only to realize it was a false lead and you've been wasting your time. The game is pretty easy on a standard playthrough (besides one level) but gets much harder when trying to unlock certain items which in my opinion is a nice challenge.

Looking at some of the earlier reviews, and watching some early gameplay I can tell when this game first came out it was probably worth like a 5/10 due to how buggy it was. But in 2022 I really haven't had any issues with this game, even playing with an i7 and GTX 1650. It has been great to follow the story of this company, Stress Level Zero, and see how two people who were making VR videos have evolved so much, to the point of creating what is, in my opinion, and I think in the opinion of many others, the BEST VR game.

The biggest highlight of Boneworks is the game's physics, which are very well done. The game is divided into 3 modes: Story, which guarantees at least 5 hours of gameplay, that is if you don't get sidetracked like me and start messing with everything, a Sandbox mode, where you can do whatever you want if you unlock all the items during the story mode, and believe me, you will never do that in a single playthrough, and the Arena mode, where hordes of enemies come to attack you. If you have a VR headset, this game is a MUST-HAVE in your library.

Even if some bugs are present, which are very rare to see, the physics are incredible compared to others Vr games. The immersion is here, and is incredible, especially thanks to the mysterious world of MythOs City, and also thanks to the musics. Michael Wyckoff has made an incredible work by composing those musics. The fights and the parkour are sometimes difficult but once you played a lot of time, it won't be frutstrating anymore. The lore is hard to understand, but once you watched a video about it, you'll see that it is more than a ordinary game lore, it is really advanced. This game is beautiful, from the beginning, in the museum, in which you discover the basics of the revolutionary physics of this game, until the end where you come to a strange dark room, where a cinematic begins and announces the sad end of this fabulous experience that is this game. This is my personal best VR video game ever made. The atmosphere, music, fighting, enemies, everything is on top. I didn't regret at all that I played and finished this game and even the hidden story behind this game is very amazing.

Despite its frustrations and some half-measure design, Boneworks is still a game that is easy to recommend for VR fans. There's a lot about its immersion that other VR games could learn from, and hopefully build an overall better game around.

With a really impressive engine that shines from physic awareness and realism, Boneworks brings a nice VR experience but fails to deliver a complete and bug-free game.
