Jul 17, 2024Perhaps I shouldn’t have been so surprised at the quality of Bō: Path of the Teal Lotus. It does, after all, feature members of the same team that impressed with their Metroid fan game AM2R, before Nintendo politely (I guess) asked them not to. Arguably one of Nintendo’s smartest moves yet given the results we have now, a bright and beautiful adventure that puts signature Metroidvania pathfinding and action to better use as a clever little blossom within an equally clever world. It’s a pure delight from start to finish, one that deserves all the attention amongst a sea of highly regarded titles already defining 2024, that captures the spirit of old-school action titles and stands out with unique visual palette. It is, in a word, breathtaking.

Jul 15, 2024Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus is simply a must play Metroidvania, with fantastic locomotion, gorgeous visuals and boss fights I won't forget in a hurry.

Jul 16, 2024Ultimately, when the most significant criticism someone can make about a game is that there isn't enough of it, that ought to be taken as a fairly good sign. If you have even a passing interest in the metroidvania or platforming genres, Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus is not a game you can afford to miss.
-
Jul 15, 2024Bō: Path of the Teal Lotus is a must-play 2D platformer that shines with its sublime movement mechanics and excellent level design. Despite a few narrative and comedic missteps, the game offers fulfilling exploration, captivating combat, and stunning visuals, making it one of the standout titles of 2024.

Jul 15, 2024Bō: Path of the Teal Lotus is, plain and simple, one truly superb and expertly-crafted metroidvania game. The cast of colorful characters ends up leading to quests that feature impressive gameplay that encourages exploration as you eventually discover more of the world, the action is superb and challenging with a lot of fun movement, and it all looks dazzling as you take in all of the sights of Japanese mythology, depicted here in such a charming style. If you're a fan of the genre, you need to check it out. And if not, consider Bō a good place to start.

Jul 15, 2024A small but very fine adventure that does a lot right. An absolute recommendation for fans of platformers and Metroidvanias.
-
Jul 17, 2024Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus is the most beautiful game you will play. The hand-drawn art is ethereal and whimsical and captures the beautiful mythology in which the game is grounded.
-
Sep 9, 2024Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus is a visual marvel filled with interesting but, sadly, underdeveloped characters. It is a gorgeous game that can be very rewarding but also brutally hard and punishing, especially with its platforming puzzles and sequences that often lack balance.
-
Jul 15, 2024Bō: Path of the Teal Lotus is one of the most beautiful games I have played. With great characters and a compelling story, it is sure to draw you in and challenge you.
-
Jul 15, 2024Bō: Path of the Teal Lotus is an extremely charming metroidvania thanks to its rich use of Japanese folklore in its world and character design. Not only is the world nice to look at, but a delight to explore. There are some rough edges when it comes to the platforming, but there is immense fun to be had if you can work past them.

Jul 19, 2024It is within a bouquet of references picked from the soil of the best Metroidvania that the celestial flower of Squid Shock Studios attracts our attention. Certainly, its scents are reminiscent of those of the creations of Team Cherry and Moon Studios, but they achieve neither their power nor their finesse. Be careful, under its attractive corolla hide sharp thorns which will certainly irritate the young shoots. Classic but well done, Bō: Path of the Teal Lotus loses a few petals due to questionable choices in its design without this diminishing our pleasure.
-
Jul 23, 2024Bō: Path of the Teal Lotus from developer Squid Shock Studios is a beautiful game that features all the right magical moves to make this a challenging precision platformer but stumbles badly with imprecise controls that make what would be a good experience frustrating.
-
TheGamerJul 20, 2024Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus tries its hardest to break out of the staples of genre contemporaries, such as with its folklore backdrop and a handful of new abilities, but it sometimes results in being more convoluted than necessary. Still, it’s set in a beautiful world that’s a joy to explore, with tough bosses and platforming that provide a rewarding challenge.
-
Jul 15, 2024While Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus plays it too safe with its gameplay, its engrossing setting and large cast of charming characters help it stand apart in the ever-crowded Metroidvania genre.
-
Jul 15, 2024I wish I could recommend Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus more. Its presentation is immaculate and when the game is focused on combat, it’s incredibly satisfying. But the inconsistencies that drag down the platforming segments sour the whole experience.
-
Jul 23, 2024A lovingly drawn platformer that is not as lively in terms of gameplay as its visuals might suggest.
-
Edge MagazineJul 11, 2024Not much here could be called outstanding - if we're hyper-critical, even though the game's visualisation of Japanese myth is a treat, it's not one we haven't sampled before. While there's a decent brew here, then, it doesn't refresh like a really good cupa. [Issue#400, p.116]
