Blair Witch 2019 plays like a cross between Firewatch, The film 1408, and trying REALLY hard to be Hellblade: Sesuna's Sacrifice with some Spec Ops thrown in.

The narratives biggest downfall was ultimately it probably should not have been tied to the Blair Witch IP. Outside of a couple little nuggets, there is one element that this game explores about the movie franchise dating back to the 1999 film and actually gives a decent explanation for it. That said if you were to remove those elements from the game and gave it a new IP the game would have ultimately been a lot better, If for no other reason than things would not be so expected

Now personally I am not a horror game fan. They do not scare me. I have a lifetime of watching horror film too that contributes to the desensitization. That is probably why I was able to pick out the central hook of the plot by either the second or third chapter. Others might not pick up on it till later, but I think an experienced mind likely would.

Mechanically there were some definite technical issues. Mostly cropping up in later chapters of the game. For example lost my dog in the fog but needed to give it instructions but could not find it, and ultimately I stumbled where the dog was supposed to be guiding me on my own and magically the dog appears, BUT the camera shoots (for the only time) into 3rd person perspective and I was without feet and a head, floating in air at what was supposed to be a critical crescendo of the narrative. Ruined the immersion of that moment completely. Later the whole UI disappeared and not like it had through most of the game where you were locked out of GUI functions. Rather no buttons could trigger their respective actions and I was unable to move forward until I restarted the game and all function return to normal. These are just some of the glitches I experienced but all in all they were not TOO terrible. Game probably could have used another 6 months for polish to work these things out.

I will say that as far as level design goes they made one of the most authentic looking forests ive seen in a while. Only problem is that while there is a reason for it, sets are reused and carbon copied WAY too much. When you get into an actual building you will see some next level euclidean forged Whovian architectural design.

Now I will say that Chapter 17 is absolutely friggen ridiculous. It is not in any sense enjoyable, it is tedious, it is drawn out forever and ultimately there is so little happening that you will wonder why they made it that long and not 1/4th its length. What is perplexing is that for most of the game up till that point the mechanics of the game were pretty cut and dry standard fare. They introduced a new mechanic in this chapter. Used it way too much when it should have been present in smaller doses in earlier chapters.

Ultimately the game clocks in around 5-6 hours of content and realistically it could have been whittled down to about half that and if its price reflected its size that would have made for a good game. The back half is just waaaaay too padded to be excusable.

All in all Its not a terrible game. I have sat and waded through far far worse than this. Its short run time does help forgive some of its flaws with pacing. You can tell this is an indie project and for that its definitely decent. It could have been more. Much more but in the end what you have is a hodgepodge of decent ideas cobbled together that ultimately the sum s not any better than any of its parts.. I would actually give it a 4.75 if I could because it just cant quite break the 50% barrier in my opinion. Your mileage of course may vary.

I really wanted to love this but after finishing it I could just as easily abandon it out in the woods as I would to keep it. Take that for what ever opinions from strangers on the internet are going for these days.

This game is badly optimized: fps is near 10 on most modern pc and many players has different problems like crashes and bugs. I faced with rare problem: the game has no voice acting in dialogues so I can't immerse myself into it. This is the worst Bloober Team's game.

On top of these complaints the game runs horridly on pc I maxed out at 48fps on my gaming laptop (ryzen7 3700 and a GTX 1660) with fps dips into the 30s, of course, the game does not look very good even on high setting with low-quality textures and what I would consider poor lighting too

This may be fun for someone who has the patience but as you can surely tell it has just annoyed me which was only made worse by the poor performance of the game, in my opinion, this game isn't worth the time of day but if you do like walking simulators and have the patience of a saint maybe try it out

The forest looks really nice. Very realistic. None of the scares or monsters are cheesy. Overall they did a pretty decent job of sticking to the Lovecraft formula of "what you can't see will scare you far more than what you CAN see". And there are some things you technically CAN see, unlike the original movie where you never saw anything resembling a monster, but the brief glimpses you get are usually so brief or distorted that you can't really make out what you're seeing. Sadly that's about all that the game gets right.

    The bad:
My biggest gripe with the game is how easy it is to get stuck. There's a small little campsite that you will be absolutely sick of by the time you finish the game because no matter which direction you venture off, it will eventually lead you back to the campsite. And I get it, one of the things from the original movie was that they kept getting lost and seemed to be wandering in circles. So bravo to Bloober team for incorporating that into the game. The problem is they abused this mechanic far beyond it's welcome. Walkthroughs provide the answers to get out of these endless loops but that's immersion breaking.

Another thing I noticed was an absolute lack of sound. You'd think a forest would have crickets chirping, frogs ribbiting, the occasional hoot of an owl or caw of a bird, but nope. Just the sound of you breathing and walking and the sound of your dog Bullet barking, etc. along with a subtle, low pitched note that usually runs in the background for atmosphere. Perhaps this is intentional, maybe the evil presence in the forest drives birds and insects away, but that's never mentioned in the movie.

There are some inconsistencies within the story as well, for example the missing boy is initially reported to be wearing a Baltimore Crows cap, then later it's mentioned as a Baltimore Ravens cap, then back to Baltimore Crows. The lack of attention to detail is disappointing. Perhaps they initially started to use Baltimore Ravens and ran into trademark issues with the NFL and forgot to change it. Who knows?

I experienced none of the frame rate or technical issues mentioned by many, I'm running a Ryzen 7 2700X, 16GB RAM, 1070ti machine at 1080p. I was annoyed however by the lack of option to re-bind controls. You're stuck with the game's default keyboard controls, which made me switch to using a controller instead.

I did encounter one really annoying bug however. This will be spoiler free, but there's a section where you have to slow walk for what feels like about 10 minutes. You can choose to skip the slow walk at the expense of possibly altering the story in a bad way, so I chose to slog through it. At the end of that 10 minutes a small cut scene played and then control was given back to me. Except I couldn't move. I had to restart the game, and it had not auto saved, so I got to do the entire 10 minute slow walk again.

Lastly, I felt like they took the story/lore in a direction quite a bit different from the movie. I can't say much more than that without spoilers, but The Blair Witch Project is my favorite horror movie of all time so I was disappointed to see the direction they went with it toward the end.

All in all it's not a horrible game, and certainly worth playing on a deep sale, just temper your expectations some.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game itself isn't that bad but there's plenty of bugs and some mechanics are so broken that I had to search on youtube to solve them! That shouldn't happen in a game that costs 30 dollars.
Kinda liked the storytelling but sometimes it gets a bit boring with all the flashbacks.

Blair Witch is a badly optimised shame for a pc game that I found myself often alt+f4ing out of it purely out of boredom and frustration, mostly the first. The story is practically non-existant, the aesthetics, unlike the 2 titles above, are very bland and uninteresting that can be summed to well lit trees, dark trees and misty trees, there is no feeling of dread/really scary moments and the navigations is also a huge mess involving loops even while going straight towards a directions and uncalled teleports if you try to stray out of the intented path that can cause further confusion.

It's safe to say that this game does not deserve even half the cash asked and they simply half-assed it intending to pull off sales based on the name and the popularity of the movie alone. I m all for supporting smaller studios like them, but this is no such case. Maybe my rating is a bit on the harsh side, but all these 10s are either paid or straight bs...

Having to repeat large parts of a game that lives from surprises and the unexpected because of bugs is just more poison. Letting the player fail because of bad collision detection and glitches is, once again, poison.

Releasing a game in a state where all of that is part of the experience during the first hour is also poison, but more for the publisher, if you want to keep my money. Which you won't.

The game itself is not the worst, it plays well despite lot of people saying it runs poorly. I myself found it running just fine without any noticeable issues. the environment and graphics overall look decent and there are some smaller elements that really shine as a unique feature like the cellphone that includes games on it and i find this to be clever and unique element.

The big problem of this game is its linear rather mundane story telling. All you really do is follow a dog around as it shows you the right path while solving simple puzzles and occasionally shining a light at potential danger to ward it off and that is really all it is. The game lacks any real potential of horror.

for 29,99$ the game is more or less a fine addition for any horror fan, but i would probably grab it on a sale as it really does not offer anything new to the table of horror genres.
