A unique shooter, very smooth game-play, the blend between almost magical abilities and weapons was highly enjoyable. Unfortunately, it did not place enough enphises on use of different weapons, it is possible to simply max out one weapon or one plasmid to complete. I do recomend playing this title, but its replayability limits itself to one or two times. 7/10.

I would have gave this game a 7 if it was not for the fact that its rating is way too inflated as is. ( And of course, if it did not contain SecuROM ) I have to say I loved the intro, Loved the part where a portion of the plane hits the structure as you are walking through it. I also loved the bit with Sander Cohen. ( Spelling? ) However, sadly this game failed to meet the hype ( as with I would have gave this game a 7 if it was not for the fact that its rating is way too inflated as is. ( And of course, if it did not contain SecuROM ) I have to say I loved the intro, Loved the part where a portion of the plane hits the structure as you are walking through it. I also loved the bit with Sander Cohen. ( Spelling? ) However, sadly this game failed to meet the hype ( as with most games ) but also failed to deliver what the devs have claimed it would. The blood looked like raspberry jam/jelly. Watered down gameplay, and graphics. ( Some visuals where nice, however it was still a bit watered down. ) When the game was first out, if you died, no matter what difficulty.. there was really no penalty.. you came back and you can finish off what ever you where fighting to begin with. Granted even then unless you are new to fps games, that did not happen often even on highest difficulty. ( Granted, supposedly they came out with a patch allowing the player to turn this "feature" off...too little, too late in my opinion. ) Now, some of my complaints from here on out are due to, well.. I had followed this game since the first bit of information was released. Back when it was PC only, and there was going to be plasmids and other things that would allow you to change the pressure of the area and various other things. Lots of things where cut out when they decided to make it also for the consoles. ( When that idea was hatched, it was going to be released on PC,Xbox360, and PS3 at the same time. ) Later, it turned into a "xbox360 exclusive" ( Meaning, Xbox360 and PC but PC being more of a port than it being fully made on it. ) I have to be honest, this really felt like the game was "dumbed" down considerably. Especially considering what the devs had stated early on before the change to make the game for consoles as well. Yea it does sound like I am bashing it, and yes I kinda am. It did have its good parts, but I have to say it. It does not deserve the praise it has gotten. Its a ok game, but not a great one. If you don't care about money, and you don't care about installing SecuROM on your system, ( Your better off getting this for the console(s) FYI ) then I would say go ahead and buy it. However most people care about the money, and the majority of the people who know about SecuROM and what it is.. stay away from it. I would just advice you guys to rent it for the console(s) if you have one of the console(s) that this game is on. Expand

The story line is incredibly disappointing after the plot twist- given the great setting I thought they would have been able to come up with a better conclusion. The second half of the game feels like it was rushed out the door, and you lose any motivation to do anything. In general, Bioshock is a great idea with fair to poor implementation, especially in the second half, where they seemed to have run out of creativity. Expand

Easily one of the most origional and challenging first person shooters EVER! The only bad is that the game can be almost to challenging at times, even on normal. also some parts are so dark that you can hardly see. But besides these minor defects, BIOSHOCK is easily a pioneer into the age of modern gaming. 9.5/10 in my book.

Great game. Probably better plot than any other game I've played. Atmosphere/setting is great, although the graphics could be a touch better.
The voice acting is brilliant, far, far better than any other game I've played. Hearing the insane ranting and shrieking of the splicers was great for atmosphere. Loved the steampunk influences.

There are not enough different enemy types in bioshock. I liked HL and HL2 because there was variety, open skies fast moving in a boat to claustrophobic tunnels etc etc, sometimes a crab was hidden and got a bite out of you so you get a fright but you're not going to die = game variety. Bioshock is repetitive indoor boringness. Story was interesting-ish but gameplay is more important and bioshock doesnt have it. Games i have an opinion on: Doom, Duke Nukem, Quake, HL1, HL2 and the episodes - great but some are old. FEAR Perseus great, scary. moh series, good. cod 1->3 good but old, cod4 AWSOME. Prey, avg. Stalker, annoying as hell uninstalled after 3 hrs. Timeshift, cool concept but pacing is not there because of time controll, therefore fairly boring. Oblivion TES, 3rd person doesnt interest me, looks boring. Crysis, good. Team fortress 2, awsome. Portal, very cool. Expand

really?? bad graphics? what is wrong with you? obviously you play on too nice of a pc to play fun games. I played both 360 and pc version and both were amazing and this game never failed to amaze me. At first I will admit things were confusing but they knew that (the creators) and they sorted everything out in the end and at that moment of enlightenment at the end I just dropped my jaw at how amazing everythign had worked out.
as far as gameplay itself, it worked fine! no issues, and textures were great too! everything about this game had all others beat (to me). teh general idea and gameplay of it is beyond imagination!
The lighting added so mcuh to the thrill of the game. I was on the edge of my seat at every turn almost. From just standing at the end of an epic battle to turning a corner the lighting gave the game that creepy feelign the entire way.

Add to this clichéd anti-intellectualism and a gaming world devoid of motivation and you have a distinctly sub-par game.

OK. Here's my take on Bioshock. It's a strong game that was (usually) a pleasure to play. However, it was truly slightly overhyped... The game was too much on the shooter side while I expected more bits of art and psychology (at least this is how the game was presented in reviews). This game is good but it is one of the most overated games of recent times. It suffers from game mechanics which break the suspension of disbelief regulary. Looks beautiful but the awe wears thin pretty quick, ultimately suffers from the Doom3 - everything looks plastic syndrome. NOT better than Stalker, Crysis or the HL2 series.

I beat bioshock, to beat bioshock, I beat Crysis because I couldn't stop playing, I knew it would be better to conserve than to beat it in one day but I couldn't help it. They both feature cool abilities and weapon upgrades, but I can honestly say Bioshock's coined "rpg aspect" is more dull than the upgrades and suit abilities in Crysis. Bioshock "laughs at fps games with static environments", so they make you walk through the same exact tunnels in the same exact underwater city, fighting the same exact enemies, and depressingly never having an interactive encounter with another "friendly" human being. There's not even modding to Bioshock which is a HUGE setback, imagine how much you could improve on the game if there was modding, but no no modding, no online play, not even a co-op story mode. The only thing I thought Crysis did wrong was how the aliens were. From the opening prologue you get so enticed, thinking there's some deadly subtle alien(s) lurking through the jungle linked to the discoveries made, but when I saw taht the aliens were just some flying, squid-like, things in metal armor it was kind of a let down. Either way I can't wait for a Crysis 2, and Bioshock left me unsatisfied, very unsatisfied. Expand

Just an average shooter. Great scenery, but no character details except on the Little Sisters. The splicers move so fast, you don't know what you're shooting at - they come off as two dimensional stick figures. You can pretty much play this one on auto-pilot with little though required. Being heavily reliant on combat, it is a big shame that none of the weapons or biomods feel correct or satisfying to use; feeling either too cumbersome or too lightweight. Some of the effects in the game are fantastic. My jaw was dangling at one point when a plane crashed into a tunnel i was walking through, causing water to gush everywhere. That being said, the overall design of the game feels very patchwork; as if the developers have tried to use as many effects as they can, some of which are too obvious. The game feels very linear and claustrophobic. 2K games state Bioshock is 'Going beyond "run and gun corridors" ', however, ironically, this is what the game becomes. Aside from the occasional impressive visuals, the only other positive I can think of is the story. Bioshock is somewhat fun, and has a lot of impressive visuals, themes and atmosphere, but it doesn't take long before it wears thin. The combat system isn't much fun once you get over the novelties, the gameplay is repetitive and there's no challenge. Alright game, but very much over rated.

Voice acting is excellent. The story is told via messages by radio or by audio tapes, left lying around by random citizens, law enforcers, smugglers, the Boss(?), scientists, and one very unstable artist who is obsessed with "wild bunnies" but "can't take the ****in ears off" so one of the most important aspects of this game is covered there. What this game succeeds in is atmosphere and immersion in a great environment. What it doesn't succeed as well in is the combat and the RPG elements. The combat involves creatures that immediately run into your face up-close. It's so very repetitive. The RPG elements are somewhat inventive but they don't wow me over, either. This game is so very hyped by fans and that just shows how desperate we have become even for a moderately good first person FPS game with some mild RPG elements. This game says that graphics, atmosphere and immersion matter much more than depth of gameplay perhaps because ease-of-entry is more important than longevity and replayability. My favorite part of the game was completing the photography tasks for the artist guy who then celebrates with the nice fireworks and great speech! That was indeed cool, but it wasn't RPG. Expand

Great game, but way to may vending machines to hack. That gets old quick.

This game is quite amazing. Though the combat of the game is about a B the story and style of the game are far greater than most of the stereotypical junk out in the market.

I give this a low score to balance the undeserved praise lavished on this mediocre title by "the critics." Bought the game based on that hype and wondered whether the reviewers had been bought off or just plain desperate. Pretty graphics, interesting sound effects and little else to bring me back to playing this game once I'd played through it once. Dismal lack of multiplayer and a UI that was obviously crafted for low resolution XBox360. A decent play through but certainly not worthy of all the praise lavished upon it. Not worth $50 bucks for sure. Maybe $30. This game is a backwards step from the decade-old game it is imitating. Elements not lifted directly out of System Shock 2 are those that were stripped from it in the dumbing-down process. This says a lot about the current state of the industry.

It becomes clear very quickly that every room and corridor in the game has been lavished with attention to detail and clever touches, from corpses and disarrayed furniture to cryptic messages. That pretty much sums up the game for me. It is stunning to look at, listen to, and explore, but if you're just rushing through it you may as well give BioShock a miss. That pretty much sums up the game for me. It is stunning to look at, listen to, and explore, but if you're just rushing through it you may as well give BioShock a miss. It is a FPS to the core - lets be upfront about this. The RPG elements are extremely limited, as are the moral and narrative choices you make in the game. One other limiting suprise for me was the linear nature of the game. At the end of the day BioShock still uses the old Doom 1.0.0 formula of go to A, get key at B, unlock C, get D, return to A. Again, this is hardly a negative unless you believe Take2's spin about BioShock being a totally non-linear world. Combat is a little clunky, but that is counterbalanced by the game encouraging you to experiment with ways to dispatch the various splicers and big daddies. Replay value is limited somewhat, but most players shouldn't mind giving the 15-20 hour game at least a couple of play through. I've concentrated on the negatives thus far so players don't disappoint themselves by BioShock not meeting expectations. Having said all that I'm still more than happy to give it a 90%. Its a staggeringly smart, beautiful, lavish experience, right up there with the best of FPSers (HL, Max Payne, etc). There is so much thought, back story and design invested in this game that it is simply stunning. The game runs beautifully on current hardware. Expand

Beautiful. Evocative. Creepy. Engaging. Above all, fun. If you only play one shooter this year, then make it Bioshock. P.s. it's far better than Crysis.

  1. A dark and astonishing masterpiece...I spend my career, and my gaming life, waiting for a moment when a game just astonishes me, when I can't believe what I'm seeing, what I'm doing. BioShock has five. [Sept 2007, p.66]

The hours spent playing this masterpiece were the perfect encapsulation of why videogaming is such a favourite waste of time for so many of us. Thrilling, terrifying, moving, confusing, amusing, compelling, and very very dark. BioShock isn't simply the sign of gaming realising its true cinematic potential, but one where a game straddles so many entertainment art forms so expertly that it's the best demonstration yet how flexible this medium can be. It's no longer just another shooter wrapped up in a pretty game engine, but a story that exists and unfolds inside the most convincing and elaborate and artistic game world ever conceived.

There is art here, despite what many would say isn't possible with games, from Roger Ebert to game designers like Hideo Kojima... BioShock stands as a monolithic example of the convergence of entertaining gameplay and an irresistibly sinister, engrossing storyline that encompasses a host of multifaceted characters. This is an essential gaming experience.
