AarondFeb 8, 2009A unique shooter, very smooth game-play, the blend between almost magical abilities and weapons was highly enjoyable. Unfortunately, it did not place enough enphises on use of different weapons, it is possible to simply max out one weapon or one plasmid to complete. I do recomend playing this title, but its replayability limits itself to one or two times. 7/10.

EvanMillerJan 27, 2009Easily one of the most origional and challenging first person shooters EVER! The only bad is that the game can be almost to challenging at times, even on normal. also some parts are so dark that you can hardly see. But besides these minor defects, BIOSHOCK is easily a pioneer into the age of modern gaming. 9.5/10 in my book.

jatooDec 30, 2008Great game. Probably better plot than any other game I've played. Atmosphere/setting is great, although the graphics could be a touch better.
The voice acting is brilliant, far, far better than any other game I've played. Hearing the insane ranting and shrieking of the splicers was great for atmosphere. Loved the steampunk influences. -

SimonS.Nov 6, 2008In my opinion, it´s one of the most enthralling and exciting shooters ever made. The unique setting and the atmosphere makes you really feel like being in a living underwater city.

MarkusS.Oct 28, 2008I don't understand the hype about that game. Of course the scenario is creative but the rest is in my opinion absolutely boring, the story is stereotyped and the ending is disappointing. It's average.

SteveP.Oct 7, 2008The game installs invasive copy-protection (DRM) on your PC, and it does not get removed when the game in uninstalled.

-
knillboggKOct 7, 2008Amazing game from start to finish. Not a standard shooter in any case, and hugely reminiscent of ss2. There are some strange points in the game, but over all it is just a game, remember that when you come to a "power to the people station". Everything else in the game was top notch, well done, and different in a good way.

KevinL.Oct 5, 2008Absolutely breath taking, this game has probably the best atmosphere in a game ever. The plot is extremely well written, the game play is very unique and the characters are unforgettable. Your missing out one of the best games ever made if you haven't played this.

CarlosTheBearOct 3, 2008Truly epic, got my copy through Steam, zero bugs. Loses 1 mark for lack of variety of enemies.

-
ColtonS.Oct 2, 2008One of the best games of all time, its original, creepy, and exciting in all shapes and forms.

-
JeremyOct 1, 2008Excellent game, best atmosphere in a long time. Recommend playing it in the dark, makes it feel even better. Very original from the little sisters, to the setting and everything. Excellent sound and music, much better then Crysis, etc. I would give it about the same as COD 4 as one of the best games of 2007.

-
BobB.Sep 7, 2008Bioshock has some of the most excellent weapons FPS's have to offer, an exciting plot, and beautiful vistas, but the problem is with repetitive level design. After a while, you really needed a change of scenery, and more enemies.
-
-
PaulT.Sep 6, 2008Bioshock uses invasive DRM to require the game to use an activation server. Despite now removing the activations limit, the game still needs an activation server for life! How will we install this game in the future when that activation server is turned off?

RyanD.Sep 5, 2008Amazing game. It combines the literary works of Ayn Rand with an excellent shooter RPG. The story is very well written with lots of exposition and plot twists. The graphics for water effects are the best so far. The audio, including the voice acting, is top notch. Lots of ways to kill your enemies provides replay value.

-
AdrianV.Aug 24, 2008That anonymous douche that gave this game a 1 is far from right. the graphics are outstanding on the 360. Maybe it's because he was playing it on a crappy T.V. Also, the sounds are great if you have a surround sound system. The gameplay and story is amazing. 10/10

MatthewCAug 7, 2008This is truly one of the greatest games i have ever played. the visuals are absolutely stunning, the sound effects and design are brilliant and the character design is downright amazing. I haven't played a game this immersive, intense and frightening in a long time. This game is, for lack of a better word, Perfect.

JoeMJul 22, 2008Despite a promising start, this game quickly disappoints, as it becomes apparent that in the midst of all the game's atmosphere, they forgot to make it fun. That is to say, shooting enemies is boring, regardless of your weapon or special powers. Add to this clichéd anti-intellectualism and a gaming world devoid of motivation and you have a distinctly sub-par game.

xioxennaJul 8, 2008Great looking but shallow, linear, very little true customisation, 4stars all for effects and atmostphere, precious little in the way of a challenge, attrocious ai, cant understand ANY good reviews this game has got, it's just completely untrue.

JasonW.Jul 3, 2008This game is good but it is one of the most overated games of recent times. It suffers from game mechanics which break the suspension of disbelief regulary. Looks beautiful but the awe wears thin pretty quick, ultimately suffers from the Doom3 - everything looks plastic syndrome. NOT better than Stalker, Crysis or the HL2 series.

AndrewF.Jun 14, 2008A true work of art. Easily the best game of 2007, and the best game in a very long time. Thankfully, the creators took their time on making a great singleplayer game instead of following the rest of the crowd and throwing in some garbage multiplayer. Great decision, can't wait for the sequel (hopefully).

ErwinR.May 30, 2008Breathtaking, underwater noir, art-deco, fantasia, the philosophy of Ayn Rand gone more wrong than it really is, and a creepy, horror, techno-thriller plot to go on top, who could ask for more?

-
OdellH.May 25, 2008This game has beautiful graphics and a nice story. Unfortunately, this keeps most reviewers and gamers today from seeing how shallow the game actually is. I was expecting something similar to System Shock 2, but, to my dismay, Bioshock is very dumbed down in comparison. It is too bad that the industry only focuses on one group these days - the lowest common denominator.
-
-
JohnH.May 19, 2008Just an average shooter. Great scenery, but no character details except on the Little Sisters. The splicers move so fast, you don't know what you're shooting at - they come off as two dimensional stick figures. You can pretty much play this one on auto-pilot with little though required. Contrary to one review, it ain't no Deus Ex.
-
-
FrazerS.May 8, 2008This game is brilliant, i played it through with crap graphics the first time and it still scared the hell out of me. The rating of 10 is used with caution though as no game is perfect; it's a good game but at the end of the day it's just another shooter with good graphics that make the appeal of it larger. At the end of the day, if you want a good fright, buy this.

LiamW.May 5, 2008Bioshock was probably the best game i have ever played. The storyline, graphics, and game overall were wonderful. You could even see the tiny little watermarks on the fish.

RoshT.Apr 21, 2008This game is extremely good but you cant give it a 10.Graphics wise, yes they have done a great amount of designing to polish the game.Game play wise, its same old shooting and occasional surprise backed by very good story.
-
-
ClintG.Apr 16, 2008it alright but the hype got way out of hand like waaay out of hand, a few of my friends including myself actually didn't bother playing through the entire game as we got sick of it first and the lack of any multiplayer in an fps these days is not really acceptable anymore. It's a good rent.

-
-
IkkeApr 13, 2008Sure... the game looks just AWESOME... But the story is very vague / confusing and does not interest me to play any further. Stupid thing is, even if I wanted to play any further, the game simply won't let me. Like many others I have a problem with the game crashing at certain point's in the game.

MonkeyV.Apr 3, 2008It really is just that good. I have been playing PC games since 1980, and I this is easily one of the most impressive and wonderful gaming experiences of my life. I urge any and all players to take the time to play Bioshock. I can guarantee you it is worth it.

AnonM.Mar 4, 2008Totally agree with most of the rest low voters. just hated it. I expected too much I guess since this game is annoyingly overrated. critics and players should be more careful in their reviews to avoid causing great expectations.
-
-
JustinC.Mar 3, 2008This is one of the best games ever. Ignore the users who criticize it, they are just too stupid to understand the themes behind the game (no exaggeration, this game is a work of art). The fact that people consider this game sub par is representative of how degraded our society has become, preferring mindless shooting games like Halo 3 instead of truly deep games like this one.
-
-
JackV.Feb 24, 2008The game has such an amazing atmosphere and intense emotion. I have never played a game which brings makes you feel like reality.

-
GodN.Feb 24, 2008Bioshock is somewhat fun, and has a lot of impressive visuals, themes and atmosphere, but it doesn't take long before it wears thin. The combat system isn't much fun once you get over the novelties, the gameplay is repetitive and there's no challenge. Alright game, but very much over rated.

SHODANJan 12, 2008This game is a backwards step from the decade-old game it is imitating. Elements not lifted directly out of System Shock 2 are those that were stripped from it in the dumbing-down process. This says a lot about the current state of the industry.

JohnnyM.Jan 10, 2008Beautiful. Evocative. Creepy. Engaging. Above all, fun. If you only play one shooter this year, then make it Bioshock. P.s. it's far better than Crysis.

Awards & Rankings
-
A dark and astonishing masterpiece...I spend my career, and my gaming life, waiting for a moment when a game just astonishes me, when I can't believe what I'm seeing, what I'm doing. BioShock has five. [Sept 2007, p.66]
-
The hours spent playing this masterpiece were the perfect encapsulation of why videogaming is such a favourite waste of time for so many of us. Thrilling, terrifying, moving, confusing, amusing, compelling, and very very dark. BioShock isn't simply the sign of gaming realising its true cinematic potential, but one where a game straddles so many entertainment art forms so expertly that it's the best demonstration yet how flexible this medium can be. It's no longer just another shooter wrapped up in a pretty game engine, but a story that exists and unfolds inside the most convincing and elaborate and artistic game world ever conceived.
-
There is art here, despite what many would say isn't possible with games, from Roger Ebert to game designers like Hideo Kojima... BioShock stands as a monolithic example of the convergence of entertaining gameplay and an irresistibly sinister, engrossing storyline that encompasses a host of multifaceted characters. This is an essential gaming experience.
