This game captures its setting, Rapture, with fear, wonder, and magnificence. In your arrival, you will most certainly feel dread but something keeps calling you to keep moving forward. But, as we get accustomed to Rapture and its inhabitants, the dread eases and the tension rises.

The world-building is phenomenal. Right off the bat were introduced to Rapture and grasp a basic idea of the world around us. But, still we ask questions, and those questions push us to beat the game; to find out the true mystery and origins of Rapture.

Cutscenes do not take up a big portion of the game. We play through entire sections without cutscenes, and it still tells its story wonderfully without a break from the addicting nature of the gameplay.

The remastered definitely improves upon the original with modern visuals and graphics, and better optimization.

While playing the game, the gameplay and storytelling wouldn't let me close the application. I literally have to force myself to hop off my PC. If it weren't for that, then I'd probably sit there and play it all day.

The mechanics such as plasmids, tonics, and upgrades really innovated the FPS genre to a whole new degree upon its release. Its influence on the industry, really shows how much of a masterpiece it is..

..Not to say, there isn't flaws. But, dammit, the storytelling and gameplay make up for it!

Compelling story and characters, with awesome back stories that completely submerge you (literally, duh) in the city of Rapture. BioShock came as a total surprise to me when I first played in on my PlayStation 3. Its story, atmosphere and mechanics immediately got my attention.

It is a totally different game from other shooters where te goal is surviving instead of killing every living thing in sight. You need to be tactful, careful, resourceful and must use your surroundings to survive. Every decision you make, story wise or how you want to play the game has a huge impact on your progression.

This is a game you play for the story. It has the strongest story and plot I have ever experienced in a game. It is simply perfect. For this reason, I enjoyed every minute of the game to see what happened next. The developers put their hearts into this game and wanted to let you know what is happening in and around Rapture. I am not going to spoil it tough; this is something you need to experience for yourself.

BioShock still has impressive graphics and animations and the design of each level is a masterpiece in my opinion. Also, the ambient sound, speech and weapon sounds are really well done. It adds greatly to the experience. A shot from your revolver with surround sound on, sounds like a real bullet flying trough your window.

There are no complaints from my end for this game. Sure, on higher difficulties the game can be brutal and unforgiving but strangely this is the only game where I see this as a challenge, rather then an unfair fight or cheap death. The best example I have, is taking down a Rosie without any upgrades or Tonics on Survivor difficulty by letting him walk up and down on a platform.

The DLC challenges are lots of fun. They empower the things I said at the beginning of the review where you need to think, use your resources well and figure out the right way to progress further.

Like I said before, BioShock is and will always be the best game I ever played to this day. No other game today has given me the feeling of ultimate satisfaction, adrenaline, focus and joy like this game does.

Needless to say, I absolutely recommend this game.

The point of Bioshock it to bring life into the long-dead RPG-shooter genre. It certainly requires reflexes as well as resource management and skill-building, and I can understand how a die-hard shooter fan would want to forget about the micromanagement and just shoot things, while the RPG fan might complain about the fast-paced, first-person gameplay, but neither of those two archetypes should have bought this game to begin with. It's like playing chess and complaining that it isn't enough like checkers. This is a niche game and, while it contains shooter and RPG elements, essentially defines it's own genre. There are few elements of the game that should be objectionable to fan's of both RPGs and shooters, as the game does try to please everyone, and any open-minded gamer should be able to see the solid gameplay and exquisite storytelling present in Bioshock. This game reminds me a lot of Rainbow Six Vegas, and this is why. Vegas was an effort on the part of Ubisoft to rejuvenate the Rainbow Six squad-based tactical franchise. However, along the way, the game got dumbed down to be more accessible to a wider audience, with weapon and armor stats stripped down to the bare minimum and tactics enacted on the battlefield as opposed to in a pre-gameplay planning session. Bioshock does the same for RPG-shooters of the past, such as System Shock and Deus Ex. The gameplay is still there, and the main attraction is still the open-ended gameplay and the RPG decisions which would then translate into tangible advantages while playing in real time. However, the RPG elements have been shaved down to save the shooter fanatic from losing interest. Anyone who thinks that this game is overly complicated and therefore not as fun as a standard kill-fest obviously isn't coming into it with the proper intention of playing a game in which the satisfaction comes from being able to play the game your own way. The character-building options are extremely varied and provide interesting new gameplay options and if you chose to forgo taking advantage of these customization options, it's your own fault if you find the game boring and derivative. You'll find yourself facing logic puzzles and very tough foes, but to almost every problem there's generally an easier alternative; so it's best to keep your wits about you, especially during the tougher parts.
Graphics-wise the 360 is well equipped but it's pretty tough on the PC. For those who have the capability you will be generously rewarded by the stunning detail of the characters, and ofcourse the underwater city enviroment, which has been very well designed on screen and very believable. Overall I found it entertaining, sometimes frustrating and always suspensive and I believe this game delivers home what any good FPS should provide. (An amphibian one that is!)

It's not enough to have a DirectX 9 video card, it also must support Shader Model 3. It gives the video card specs right on the box. If this is ignored there will be nothing but graphical 'glitches'. I orinally scored this at 10, because I couldn't give it a 9.8, because I felt it was that good. The game is still excellent, but now that I've completed about 70% of the game, I feel that it could have used one more month of QA testing. The widescreen thing was a design decision which is being adressed by developers now. However, there are just enough on the issues that have come up since the games release to make me re-assess. Mostly the widescreen decision. But the copy protection for the non-digital purchasers is a slap in the face to those that spend hard earned money. I don't know of any other software that would require me to un-install it, before I do a system format, or I lose one of my validations. So if I have a system crash and have no way to recover other than format my HD, there goes an activation. If I just forget because I haven't played the game for a while . . .there goes another activation. I guess I'd just have to resort to some other means of getting my game to work. This copy protection is one of the reasons piracy is so prevalent on the Internet. If I hadn't purchased this game off of Steam, and purchased it in a store. I'd be looking for an alternate means of running the software, if you catch my meaning. Expand

Bioshock is one of those rare gems in the FPS world. Rich graphics and superb weapon selection/modification is bench mark for most FPSs now a days but what BioShock brings to the table is what most lack; intest, moving story dialog. The story and it's characters are amazing. From unique looks to great voice acting the game can really draw you in. I must play and instant classic in my book.

That pretty much sums up the game for me. It is stunning to look at, listen to, and explore, but if you're just rushing through it you may as well give BioShock a miss. It is a FPS to the core - lets be upfront about this. The RPG elements are extremely limited, as are the moral and narrative choices you make in the game. One other limiting suprise for me was the linear nature of the game. At the end of the day BioShock still uses the old Doom 1.0.0 formula of go to A, get key at B, unlock C, get D, return to A. Again, this is hardly a negative unless you believe Take2's spin about BioShock being a totally non-linear world. Combat is a little clunky, but that is counterbalanced by the game encouraging you to experiment with ways to dispatch the various splicers and big daddies. Replay value is limited somewhat, but most players shouldn't mind giving the 15-20 hour game at least a couple of play through. I've concentrated on the negatives thus far so players don't disappoint themselves by BioShock not meeting expectations. Having said all that I'm still more than happy to give it a 90%. Its a staggeringly smart, beautiful, lavish experience, right up there with the best of FPSers (HL, Max Payne, etc). There is so much thought, back story and design invested in this game that it is simply stunning. The game runs beautifully on current hardware. Expand

You can go thru almost the whole game with barely using his "powers". so they are nearly useless half the time. the game I live to play 1st person shooters. and this is a great one. clean graphics that don't require too much from your hardware. Nice game, but really, sort of different and strange on the PC. But my assumption that this beats Halo 3.

  1. A dark and astonishing masterpiece...I spend my career, and my gaming life, waiting for a moment when a game just astonishes me, when I can't believe what I'm seeing, what I'm doing. BioShock has five. [Sept 2007, p.66]

The hours spent playing this masterpiece were the perfect encapsulation of why videogaming is such a favourite waste of time for so many of us. Thrilling, terrifying, moving, confusing, amusing, compelling, and very very dark. BioShock isn't simply the sign of gaming realising its true cinematic potential, but one where a game straddles so many entertainment art forms so expertly that it's the best demonstration yet how flexible this medium can be. It's no longer just another shooter wrapped up in a pretty game engine, but a story that exists and unfolds inside the most convincing and elaborate and artistic game world ever conceived.

There is art here, despite what many would say isn't possible with games, from Roger Ebert to game designers like Hideo Kojima... BioShock stands as a monolithic example of the convergence of entertaining gameplay and an irresistibly sinister, engrossing storyline that encompasses a host of multifaceted characters. This is an essential gaming experience.
