An incredibly generic RPG. Often playable, but sometimes frustrating and never original through its 100 hours plus playing time. In a PC market that thrives on innovation, Larian Games seem to have missed something fundamental.
-
If youre feeling patient and want a massive adventure then BD is worth a look. If you have "Sacred" in your library, keep playing till you get to level 50 and then see how you feel.
-
The puzzles are also annoyingly addictive.
-
Not a "Diablo II" killer or a vast improvment over the first Divinity title, it is however a sometimes frustrating game, with limited replay value.
-
Computer Games MagazineWhile the writing is more polished this time around, the dialogue remains inconsistent in voice. For every dramatic moment, there's a completely out-of-place near-verbatim take on "Monty Python,' or a silly inside joke. [Aug 2004, p.58]
-
My conundrum is that despite the issues and glaring oversights, Beyond Divinity is still fun to play.
-
It promises many hours of addictive adventuring, all with a tone that succeeds at being self-consciously humorous in the face of some fairly conventional fantasy trappings.
-
If you have ever played "Diablo," "Dungeon Siege," or "Baulders Gate," than this game will become second home to you. The game has a very similar pace, but it does have a different flare to it by some of the gameplay additions such as solving puzzles and sneaking around.
-
It has a refreshing sense of humor.
-
Ostensibly worthy, but fundamentally uninspiring the only value is the size.
-
If the game balance had matched the creativity and attention to overall design put into this title, I would probably have given it a 90, because the detail of construction and depth of the environment are truly excellent.
-
It has a few minor flaws, but the overwhelming amount of fun this game offers more than makes up for it.
-
Cheat Code CentralThose that appreciate long, deep and difficult RPGs will have their hands full with Beyond Divinity. I can honestly say that this game is beyond me. I've played it for days and I still don't really know what the hell I'm doing.
-
BoomtownBeyond Divinity is like a rigged slot machine; you always win the same amount you put in, but the jackpot never comes. Youll continue to play because you have nothing to lose, but its not as exciting.
-
We can overlook the dingy appearance of the redesigned world, but the new style of play, involving a pair of bonded characters and a sort of extra-dimensional training area known as The Battlefields, adds layers of unnecessary complication.
-
You will inevitably find yourself getting tired of all the levers and keys, and frustrated by the scripting bugs and inventory glitches.
-
Good stuff for RPG fans everywhere, though a bit too difficult and time-consuming for the casual gamer.
-
The problem with the story in Beyond Divinity -- advertised as deep and detailed on the games web site -- is that there isnt really one.
-
I just plain old got bored with the game. The occasional clunkiness of both the presentation and the interface didn't bother me, but when the thrill of getting new items began to diminish under the realisation that the developers had little else up their sleeve other than to keep heaping monsters and loot onto me then I just gave up.
-
If you're looking for a lengthy (as in 100+ hours) RPG that blends quick and dirty gameplay with heaping plates of detail and sophisticated character development, no one else comes close to this series.
-
Computer Gaming WorldIn spite of any number of small improvements, the new game feels more stale and by-the-numbers than the first one. [Aug 2004, p.78]
-
Larian has escaped formulaic RPGs and brought us a game truly worth the 80+ hours it takes to discover everything within. Fans of the "Baldur's Gate" and "Icewind Dale" series will find something familiar here and experience a strange form of nostalgia.
-
PC GamerIf you're an RPG junkie, Beyond Divinity is definitely worth your time and money. Just don't expect to extract any extra gameplay hours out of the random dungeon generator - it's just not going to happen. [July 2004, p.64]
