Bet on Soldier would have been a great game had it not been for the poor computer AI, lack of variety in the models and the abysmal loading times/lag. Great levels, a smart presentation and immersing sound coupled with the betting aspect makes the game stand out in the crowd.
-
Bet on Soldier attempts to up the ante on the genre, but instead deals a conservative hand that only FPS fans will want to check.
-
A serviceable shooter hampered by a pile of small annoyances and lack of difficulty.
-
The mere running around, pointing the crosshair, shooting... it's all just drained of life. Not even the option of mercenary sidekicks makes much difference, they just happen to be the chaps you can't shoot. And they die without consequence. Poor fellas.
-
Inconsistency in the sound, story, and graphics presentation can be jarring and distracting.
-
Play MagazineBet on Soldier's action really heats up later in the campaign, the level design and intensity improve dramatically. [Nov p.103]
-
Sadly, despite this commendable attempt at innovation and the lush graphics, Bet On Soldier's combat and (non-linear) story doesn't engage on the same level as the real shining lights of the FPS genre.
-
Another one of those games that has great potential and introduces a new take on an aging genre, but after playing through the story mode once there’s not much there to keep you coming back for more.
-
The technical execution of virtually every aspect of this potentially great game is embarrassing beyond reproach. Even patched, there are a myriad of crashes, glitches, heinous load times and other bugs that should have never gotten past beta.
-
Believability takes a hit right from the off when you can unload a clip in your drill sergeant's face without even causing his eyes to water.
-
PC GamerRegrettably, BOS is an FPS that's a POS. You can definitely do better. [Holiday 2005, p.68]
-
PC FormatNice ideas, poorly executed in the main. Shows some promise online. [Dec 2005, p.96]
-
An interesting attempt at breaking the first-person shooter mould, and it could have been something special if the rest of the game weren’t rather mediocre.
-
It gets halfway there with an elaborate backstory and interesting premise, but it gets too stuck in standard FPS design conventions to ever really distinguish itself as anything special.
