Berserk and the Band of the Hawk is an interesting title to satisfy the fans from the manga and to give the chance to crush enemies using Guts and the rest of the characters from the series. However the game rooster it’s quite short with only 8 characters to select besides having characters which could be interesting to be playable like Isidro or Farnese.

During epic battles Berserk fits musou genre nicely, but when Guts’ story gets at odds with game mechanics, things take a turn for the worse. [Issue#219, p.72]

Even if you're a Warriors fan who knows not to expect a Dark Souls level of gratifying melee combat, Band of the Hawk still deprives you of the juicy sights and sounds that one associates with Guts' savagery; the splashes of red that result from every kill hardly counts as "gore".

When the best parts of a game are the parts that aren't the game, something is wrong. [Issue#260, p.64]

Berserk has its moments – the Berserker Armor is absolutely hilarious, and getting to play as Zodd is awesome – but a few glimmers of amusement aren't enough to save it. The game doesn't have a lot to offer anybody – newcomers to the series will be left in the dust, long-time fans will be turned off by the clumsy adaptation, and anyone looking for a decent action game should grab a copy of Nioh instead. It's likely this will end up as just another forgotten footnote in the series' troubled history of adaptations.

If you're not down to read the whole thing I'm about to write, I'll summarize: This game will keep you engaged if you're a fan of Berserk. If you're not down to read the whole thing I'm about to write, I'll summarize: This game will keep you engaged if you're a fan of Berserk. Just make sure you get a controller before you play it, or buy a console version if you have a console.

Now to the meat of the game - Berserk and the Band of the Hawk is a decent game. Again, if you're a fan of the franchise. Running around as Guts and scoring hundreds of kills will be enjoyable, despite the flaws which are definitely there. If you're a new fan of the franchise and wanted to get into the world of Berserk, this is a decent choice. The cutscenes from the movie help visualize and get across some of the more important scenes the game engine just can't handle. In addition to the cutscenes, there are "Events". These are basically short dialogue sequences of some of the characters talking to each other, some scenarios that weren't explored in the manga, and they help immerse you further in the world. The original story of the manga is told pretty well, better than the new animes from 2016 and 2017. The extra outfits are accurate with the arcs, and you can change back and forth freely which is a neat little bonus. As far as gameplay, there are several different characters to pick from, and they all play differently, adding that bit of replay value to the levels and modes. Endless Eclipse and Free Mode will keep you coming back, again, if you're a fan.

However, there are quite a few negatives that even as a massive fan, I can't ignore. The gameplay is shallow for sure. Yes, there are different characters to play as, but there are only a handful of combos you can perform. A variation of those, or additional super moves you can perform rather than just one each character is given, would add that little extra touch I was hoping for. You do get extra weapons, but they don't feel impactful enough to be rewarding. Most of the time i forgot they were there. The biggest part of a hack and slash game is obviously the gameplay, and not getting that down means a disappointing experience, especially with a world like Berserk's. The in-game cutscenes, not the ones from the movie, are poorly done. They're really awkward, with the characters moving around like robots.

Overall, this game isn't a disaster. If you can tolerate it, and are either a fan of the franchise or looking to get into it, look for it on sale. If I'm being honest with myself, I don't think it was worth the full asking price.
