This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I will start off with the single player and move onto the multi player.
The story is very standard. The main bad guys are quite generic and the locations are, for the most part, uninspired. The gun play is quite good, you need to use some tactics if you are to survive and there are a few scripted sequences which liven things up a little. I have a few problems with the mission design because some missions seemed like they were ripped right out of other games. The most obvious of these "borrowed" missions, as I will call them, is one called 'Night Shift'. In said mission, you start off as a marksman who must first make his way through a city, following orders from a senior so that you don't get caught by enemy patrols, to a vantage point which you provide covering fire from. This mission, to me at least, felt just like I was playing the mission "All Ghillied Up" from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. The similarity only got stronger towards the end of the mission, where you back yourself into a corner, lay claymore mines all around yourself and then have to protect a wounded ally from enemy fire. After a certain amount of time, you then have to run out, through enemy fire, to your extraction helicopter which is waiting outside. This is almost an exact replica of the mission which directly succeeds "All Ghillied Up", which is called "One Shot, One Kill". However, Night Shift is a very good level and I had a lot of fun playing it, so this likeliness serves more as an annoyance to me than a game stopper. I think where the single player shined for me was the protagonists that you play throughout the game. There are I think four in total, two of which only appear for a single mission each. These protagonists have very cleverly designed and incredibly immersive vehicle missions. One a mission where you are in a Jet Aircraft and one a where you take the machine gun and main gun in an M1A2 Abrams Main Battle Tank. These missions are defiantly the most memorable and, in my opinion, the most fun. The other two protagonists are an American and a Russian, I will not go into their missions specifically, but I will say that the use of the Russian protagonist to make, what I thought was, a subtle and incredibly relevant comment on the readiness of American security services to blame the Russians for a travesty that they did not commit. I enjoyed the Russian protagonist's missions immensely, not just for this reason, but also because they had the most variety and most interesting locations.

The campaign is good, not great, so how does the multi player, arguably the pillar of the Battlefield franchise, stand up to the test?

Disappointingly. It is not bad by any stretch of the imagination, I have poured hours into this multi player, including the beta, and I intend to continue doing so. Now I have not played Battlefield 2 so I make a massive assumption in saying that Battlefield 3 multi player feels more like the most recent Medal of Honour than it does a proper Battlefield game. Now I love both Battlefield Bad Company 2 and Medal of Honour, so either way, I enjoy the multi player. I was, however, hoping for more intense, explosion ridden, cover debris covered, team focused multi player. This, unfortunately, is not the case. There are hardly any opportunities to show off Frostbite 2's lovely destruction physics and the game seems more focused on run-and-gun game play. This is a shame as I was hoping for an experience more like that of Bad Company 2. Now that I have had my little rant, I can tell you that the multi player for Battlefield 3 is outstanding. The intensity is still there, something I feel Medal of Honour lacked, the team play, while not as focused as before, is still there and still rewarding you for helping your team by providing them with ammo or health, reviving them or providing a forward spawn point for them etcetera.

In conclusion, I love this game, I think it was well worth my time and money and I can almost guarantee it will be worth yours as well. I do not think the games flaws, of which, admittedly, there are many, get in the way of the fun at all. I give the game a hearty eight and eagerly await DICE's next instalment.

I like immersion, and battlefield gives me that. The maps are very large and spacious, making you feel like you're part of a large-scale war. The gameplay feels good, I absolutely love the parkour-style moves that can be done over small objects - but it can be annoying when the animation plays and you're still on the same side of the wall... it doesn't always work that well. The vehicles are a refreshing thing to have, not really my thing, but they work well.

I think my favorite part of the game are the weapons themselves. Every weapon, all the way down to the pistols, feel very weighty and realistic - they are just fun to shoot. This mostly has to do with the sound design. The sound is incredible, you have never heard anything as realistic as this. Everything from shooting your gun, to the vehicles, to shots being fired in the distance, to explosions and falling debris... the sound will blow you away.

At first, I thought limiting the consoles to 24 players instead of the PC's 64 was going to be a big deal. But, it's not, it still feels like a large battle. If you want a big, immersing, slower-paced, semi-realistic FPS, go for BF3.

As much fun and action packed as the smaller maps can be, trudging across a map the size of Nebraska, only to be picked off by a sniper, or shot by a seemingly INVINCIBLE helicopter just doesn't seem like an enjoyable multiplayer experience to me. Campaign = YAWN.

The single player really what is pulling the score from a 9. The multiplayer is as expected, AMAZING. From the top notch lighting effect, combined with the awesome sound effect, even for a non-fps fan like me, it is a real treat. Rarely any games have impressed me so much that can get me interested in game type that I don't relaly play much.

I never appreciated sound in a game until BF3. The graphics are great, but the sound is what really draws me in. EA would have been better off leaving single player out and instead providing a way to train before jumping in to multiplayer. Personally I purchased BF3 specifically for multiplayer, so the poor single player mode isn't an issue for me. For a good single player experience II never appreciated sound in a game until BF3. +the game overall is the best shooter since battlefield 2
+actually uses pc hardware especially vram
-battlelog is **** no way to communicate with friends who just logged in while you are in a game
-jet physics and heli physics are a far cry from the brilliance of the desert combat mod physics, it's better than in awful games like bf:vietnam or bad company, but it's not on par. At least you have full control, it's just too arcady and momentum barely applies.
Plane and heli physics are a big deal in battlefield that is why I mention them.
-A few of the guns have virtually no recoil, meaning noone uses the guns that actually have a learning curve to them -metro is unplayable because of rpg, grenade and most of all grenade launcher spam and the endless ammo you have for them as long as you stand next to any ammo pack...
-some broken mechanics like the supernova flashlight, infrared vision scope and silly mortars
    -only 4 classes
    -broken vehicle perks that stack
-netcode is still **** compared to proper shooters like cs , quake and UT99, at least it's better than the abomination called bad company 2
-the minimap sucks, they nailed it in the previous games I don't know why they made it so painful to read now
-they forced the modern warfare style carrot on a stick of filling bars on players, why can't it just be like bf1942 where you get your guns and the sandbox nature of the game is fun enough to last you for 3 years without needing a carrot!! -no mod tools, shame on you dice you greedy ****
-destruction is really lame, they talked it up and it turned out to be a dud. Just scripted where you shoot one of the hitboxes of an object till it runs out of hp after which part of it or all of it crumbles.
I guess their netcode is to blame for this, with proper physics based destruction it would soil itself most likely.

This looks like a huge list of negatives, but other than a few major ones (no mod tools, dissapointing physics and netcode, and only 4 classes / no commander) which bring the score down for me, the others can be (and most likely will be) fixed by a simple patch.

There are hundreds of hours of gameplay and learning curve packed into this game, it looks , sounds, feels and plays well so it's worth getting.
It's just a shame that they dumbed it down here and there and tried to market it to the retarded cod demographic, while the two games have nothing in common other than that there are guns in them.

This franchise isn't about singleplayer, so i'm not basing my score on that. As a multiplayer game it's unbeatable, well, you will know what i mean if you've ever played a BF game before. Vehicle combat is brilliant, lots of fun to be had with jets and tanks, and the anti-air vehicles (currently OP'd). Everything seems to be balanced with most vehicles as long as you have the right unlocks. Infantry wise, some of the unlocks might be OP'd, one being the IRNV (infra red scope), and another, the mortar. I'm not so sure the vehicle disablement feature works well but it's a new edition to the battlefield franchise and i welcome the change (it's optional depending on the server you join anyway). It doesn't work well with jets as i can never get a kill with one.

If i am to nit pic even further... the spawn system is bugged, the squad and spawn screens should have been better implemented, like in BF 2142. Jumping over obstacles doesn't always work as it should. It's a real shame not to see a proper BF intro but the implementation of battlelog is very much welcome as long as Dice sorts out all the bugs with it. The Commo Rose (Q button) needs to be patched asap.

I would have liked a few better modes instead of the usual Rush, TDM, and Conquest modes. Something like a Titan mode which can be found in 2142. Co-Op is a welcome edition, although i haven't played it much.

The game looks and sounds absolutely stunning. I didn't notice the low res textures that IGN pointed out, maybe they were looking at the monitor with a pair of pink frilly binoculars, or maybe i was reading a review of the console version? The sound is slightly better than BC2, which is really good.

Overall, it's one of the best FPS out there. I won't give it a ten because of the bugs and a few other things, but i'm sure the new patch will fix those.

I was expecting just being able to go through the SP with a buddy, but Co-Op is it s own mini-series. Very interesting concept. However, it seemed under developed, almost as an afterthought (or an extra game mode to stick on the box). I hope this will be expanded later on with DLC or expansions. This game is definitely going to be around for years, like BF2. I debated dockeding a point because of the terribly low ceilings for the jets in some maps. I have a feeling this has something to do with being able to support the consoles, and I hope it gets patched out of the pc version - so if your a flyer, you've been warned. And there is no default ingame voice for squads. You have to set up a party in Origins to use voice, if your not in a squad with clannies utilizing TS/Vent. I would definitely recommend buying this game. Expand

The maps are console maps pure and simple , not a damn one of them save for the really really big ones are playable with anything more than 24.

There is also some balance issues. A few gadgets will have players frustration at new levels , namely the cheap flashlights that blind players in broad daylight, the mortars that can be used in protected zones and have infinite range and AA tanks that beat battle tanks.

there is also rubber banding , both in bullets and in players. So be warned like all dice games this one launched with some very rough edges

The unlocks are plentiful and spread out enough that you feel you really accomplished unlocking them while not putting so far out of reach. On top of this DICE and EA reward those who pre-order by offering free DLC as it becomes available. This is compared to the COD series which tends to offer more DLC... but at a $15 price tag for content that is undeveloped. So overall if you want to put some money into a game this fall... Not to mention the only place you can make changes to your personal and graphical settings is in the game itself. The forced kill cams don't help this either. The campaign isn't the best, and in all honesty I much prefer a Call of Duty campaign, while I do dislike Call of Duty's multiplayer. That's about it for the negatives though. The game itself looks amazing, much more so than expected. A rewarding system for performing squad/team actions also helps set this game apart from other FPS games. The sound effects are also awesome. All the guns sound great, especially when a bullet just misses you. The selection of guns is great, and the leveling system is well designed. This game is well worth the $60, and I'm sure it will keep me busy for a very long time, at least when I'm not playing Skyrim. As long as they don't go the Call of Duty way and make Battlefield 4 next year, of course.

The large environments (however not as large as bf2) are great to look at and drive/fly around. There are many modes to play which helps you depending on what kind of game you feel like playing at the time. The destructible environment adds a lot to the game. it makes you feel more scared knowing that tank you ran by could just blow up the small wall you ran behind for cover. It adds a lot more depth to each game because the environment can change on the fly and so you must constantly be able to adapt. The game is nearly perfect however there are some small flaws.

The only reason I'm not giving it a 10 out of 10 is because of 3 small things. First of all is that the controls for helicopters and planes have been simplified. This makes them so much easier to fly for all the novices however it takes away from all the stunts and tricks you could do previously if you had enough experience. Second of all is the campaign which is more like an extended tutorial and guide to the game mechanics however since it's there I wish it could be slightly better. Third of all which is the bugs. Personally I haven't had any real bugs pop up on me that prevent me from playing and most of the bugs appear to be getting or have gotten fixed. However some people still occasionally get bugs so be aware of that if you play. Although like every game bugs will disappear as they are fixed just like every other game.
