The interface is wonderful. You have so much information immediately available to you. Google Maps always has a minimap in the lower left corner, which gives you a good overview of the area. Getting information about people gives you a clear, clear window. Hacking offers a menu with easily recognizable icons, so you always know what your button presses will do.

Singleplayer: at launch only 5 maps were available for singleplayer and you needed to be connected online to even play the singleplayer. This was a new "feature" that prevented players from actually playing even the singleplayer if the server providers were to abruptly shut down.

Map design and Titan: some of the least compelling in the series and is apparently due to new hires in the company being assigned to create them. A total of 10 maps were featured on release and another 10 were added by game patches. A new game mode premiered in 2142 called Titan mode, a heavily modified variant of the original conquest. Instead of capturing flags, you capture silos that bring the health of the enemy Titan's shields down. Instead of reducing enemy ticket count to 0, you reduce the enemy Titan's shield down to 0 either by controlling silos or destroying the interior of the Titan after breaching

There are fewer weapons and vehicles in previous titles but more gadgets.

If I could give this game a 0 and 10 at the same time I would.
Why a zero? Because EA didn't give this game the love and care it needed to thrive into something so much bigger and better.
Why a 10? Because this game is the pinnacle of Battlefield creativity and you need only look at the structure of the TITAN gamemode to see why. There was so much untapped potential in this game but EA

I enjoyed the game while it lasted. It would be a perfect 10 if EA did give a frack about the bugs in it. At some point a bug in the central servers poped up for no reason and they wouldn't fix it for 2-3 MONTHS while they were ignoring everyone in the forums not even giving a clue about what is going to happen to the unplayable game. Another game destroyed by The bad company. (pun intended)

For me, this was the best of the franchise until BF1. It came at a time where console games were dumbing down most genres. Don't get me started on their mentally challenged mutant offspring MOBAs.

This title didn't suffer from that.

hile I feel like Titan mode and some other little things weren't polished or fantastic, I deeply enjoyed this one. There were some balancing issues.. one of the assault's last guns is hyper accurate and shoots mini-rockets to boot (pretty much never died to anything but the voss and that's why i remember the name). It was never a HUGE deal, but still irritating.

You can still play it, but there's this thing about old games where only the worst servers survive, like roaches. Yeah it is pretty cool when the clan who runs the server has placed a bugged invulnerable squad spawner in your uncapturable HQ and is constantly vehicle stealing/shooting behind your lines hurr hurrr..

I really liked this game, it was the first Battlefield game which improved the infantry gameplay a lot alongside the customization. The vehicle gameplay is okay, the game is mainly focused around the infantry combat, so most maps are urban without much space for any heavy vehicle, not a big problem since there are the "walkers", big mechs which shred any infantry in sight. The new gamemode, Titan, is awesome and every BF player should play it. What killed the game for me was the lack of a solid player base and the horrible netcode and hit registration.

"Battlefield 2142" was a solid addition to the great sequel. New weapons and transport, what would a battlefield fan want more? Unfortunately this was not enough to keep players into the game. One evening of fun left positive feelings, but next day my friends and I jumped back into "Battlefield 2" and never run '2142' again.

I have logged hundreds of hours of BF2142 and can say that it is THE BEST MULTIPLAYER FPS game I have EVER played (given that it works, i will explain later). I have plenty of friends that played 2142 and they all loved it, and I occasionally meet someone that had played the game, and it is almost always that we get in a long passionate conversation about the game and all the fun times we had in it. I would say that anyone that got the game to work correctly, and took the time to get fully accustomed to it, is very likely going to love the game. The amazing thing about the game in my opinion is that they took BF2, and fixed pretty much everything that was bad or annoying about it, and put it in a completely different setting, with a different feel to it. the balance in this game is surprisingly very good, as every class or vehicle has very well thought out strengths and weaknesses, along with actual directional hit detection that works. not only is the balancing good, but i like how they simplified the class system and just made everything more streamlined and efficient. instead of 8 classes, they combined them into 4 while giving you the option to customize your kits for your situation. I loved that, since in BF2, it seemed like all the classes had IMMENSELY powerful strong points, and everything else was a weakness. basically, now you have a chance of winning in almost any situation, though the chances all depend on skill and luck, instead of like in BF2, where you excel in certain situations, and every other situation, you will be overwhelmed and slaughtered. Now, onto the bad parts of the game. the main problem I find with the game is EA. This was the last game that the original BF team worked on in DICE, and in my opinion, the pinnacle of their work. in case if you didnt know, the original dev team for BF quit DICE and joined Infinity Ward, meaning that CoD4 was actually BF3. but enough about that, EA ruined BF2142 since they decided to go about giving absolutely horrendous support for it, as the game program was immensely finicky, it loved to not run correctly, many times for no apparent reason at all. plus, the updates were few and far between, meaning that bugs and glitches stayed in the game for quite a while before they were fixed. At first, 2142 was not that great due to the horrid way EA ignored the game, then it got better for a couple years. however, they decided to stop with all support for the game and stop updates quite soon for this game, when hundreds, maybe thousands of people were on at once, still fervently playing this game, at least when i know the community was still VERY active. as to the advertising, its actually not a big deal, all that happens is that, depending on what server you play on, they can change the graphic displayed on billboards in game, I dont get why so many people are worked up about it, and why so many people would give a "0" to a perfectly great game just because they dont like any kind of advertising at all. So, to sum it all up, BF2142 is the Best multiplayer FPS game I have ever played, when it works. the game itself was pure platinum, but EA had to get around to ruining it. If you want to play this game, you cant anymore. the community is almost non-existent now since EA decided to abandon it quite a while ago, if you had played this game a good couple years ago, it would have been something amazing, but its time has passed. Its one of those under-rated gems of a game, pretty much ignored since BF2 was still super popular at the time. Expand

It'd be impossible for me to explain why I like this game in the relatively short, 5,000 characters that this gives me, so what I'll say is, try it. Don't just try the demo either, because I doubt anybody is playing that anymore, actually go out and buy it (what is it, like, $15 - $20 now?) - Just give it a try, play on Camp Gibraltar, or some other map around that size, try Titan mode around, and just get a feel for it, I'm sure you'll love it. And if you're feeling skeptical, just look up some YouTube videos!

All of these posts, all of these negative reviews which are criticising the game's supposedly use of "spyware" to spy on your computer are complete and utter b******t. I've played this game for almost 5 years already and I have had no side effects from playing this game at all. GameSpy is included in this game to track the record of how long you play and also to advertise things on those billboards ingame. Also, who the hell cares if there is an advertisement for something in the game? (which isn't all the time anyway, only on specific weeks) There is advertisement EVERYWHERE these days.

O.K, now on to the review.

Battlefield 2142 is, in a way, like Battlefield 2... but only a lot better. It now has 2 gamemodes:

Conquest: The classic gamemode for the battlefield series. Each team is given a certain amount of respawns for players (called "tickets") and you have to capture flags across the map (to either spawn in that area or to gain access to certain vehicles which also spawn there). There are even game modes, like "Assault Lines" where a team has one/both teams have capturable main bases (if all the other flags are captured by the other team).

Titan: This is the new gamemode featured. Basically, both teams start with a big flying battleship (called a Titan) with AA + Ground cannons, a hanger (which spawns air vehicles) and an infantry pod (capsule) launcher (you get in there and you're launched out like a rocket, you can then guide your way to where you want to go in the air... well, you can't go ANYWHERE when you get launched. You have a certain amount of time until your pod falls to the ground. When your pod crashes to the ground, you either have to catch a ride or run to the destination you wish to go to). Both teams have to try and destroy the opposing team's Titan in order to win the game. They do this by capturing missile silos which automatically launch missiles every 5 minutes against Titans -*Stops*- I could go on forever explaining the gamemode, just search "Titan Tutorial 2142" on Google/YouTube.

So with the addition of this new game mode, the game already has more replayability than Battlefield 2. You can play the original Conquest mode + Titan.

The concept for the game is great. The idea of a federated European Union fighting against a newly created Pan Asian Coalition (rather than it being just another America (Blue + Better/Organised Equipment) vs Russia (Red + Worst/Unorganised Equipment) gives it an original feeling than most FPSs out there at the moment. Both factions have slight differences, such as the EU mainly use bullets, grey camoflauge, blocky vehicles/equipment + are a bit more traditional while the PAC use plasma bullets (they're not really lasers, they still feel like normal bullets but with just a higher pitched "bang" sound + a blue muzzle flash), black camoflauge, curvy vehicles/equipment + technologically advanced vehicles (such as the hover tank and hover speeder in the Northern Strike maps). You can easily distinguish from which side a player is based on the looks of them.

You have the ability to customize what your class should be equipped with which is also better than Battlefield 2 (which gave you a fixed type of equipment and fixed armour type with each class). You also unlock more equipment/weapons as you rank up (there are 41 ranks. There are an extra 3 ranks, but they're for really dedicated/pro players which are ranked high in the global leaderboard).

Balancing is also great in this game, ignore what some people have said before about this. There are no jet fighters in this game, just VTOL helicopters (which are actually combination of a jet fighter and a helicopter) which I think is a good thing. In Battlefield 2, any map which gave each side 1 or 2 jets was a complete rapefest. Experienced pilots would basically kill EVERYONE with their side guns, missiles and bombs. In Battlefield 2142, experienced pilots can be taken down more easily with the improvements in ground AA turrets (EMP rockets + plasma cannons/Titan AA gun which are just big Gatling guns), the AA bazooka (like a Stinger) and other (e.g. the secondary turret for the battlewalkers has smaller gatling guns and EMP rockets).

There are many more good things, but the number of characters I've used are almost over the limit, so I'm going to end it.

    10/10 - Great game.

Battlefield 2142 is not as fun as most other multiplayer shooters out there and can be very frustrating. Balance is also an issue. Recon class players can run through a group of people, dropping and detonating explosives, and come out of it unharmed if friendly fire is off (it usually is). Also, when sprinting players move very fast but cannot shoot: very useful for getting to cover. However, when not sprinting players move extremely slow: making them easy targets and greatly reducing the fun of one on one fights; since both combatants are practically immobile. Being used to playing Counter-Strike: Source, I found that this made the gameplay extremely boring. Ultimately, after playing this game for about three weeks I'm probably going to throw it away. I've put in a few hours with this and BF2, and I must say that the lower-grading critics haven't put in the requisite hours to make a fair judgment. I say this because even though I loved BF2, 2142 has a much better communications system in place, really encouraging squad play. The same goes for the points system. But the game play is generally the same. I'm just happy to see that there aren't so many menu and class choices. In BF2 there were around 8 classes, here there are four. The game is simplified all around and the maps and weapons are much more interesting since you don't just to play with different types of the same guns as in previous BattleField games. The new vehicles are a lot of fun and there are always a lot of different types. Even thought this might just a mod of BF2 , it's a really good mod! Besides it's not $50, its only $20. As for it not adding anything new, all the weapons are different, all the vehicles are different besides perhaps the combat buggy in functionality, it added a new mode of play, all the battlefields are different, I guess I'm annoyed in what you people wanted to to see added the concept. All the BF games are the same in how they are played; and why would you assume they'd create a new engine for the game when the BF2 engine was so successful on a wide scale, they did revamp the graphics a whole lot. As for the ads....I've played 90 hours so far and I noticed one, it was a billboard that had an advertisement for a gaming mouse I think and get this, the ad that I saw was specially made for the game and used the same art style as the game has in it, not to mention that it was distressed to blend in with everything else in the level and the only reason I saw it was because I was waited for more players to enter the game and was throwing grenades at things and writing my name with a support weapon on the side of a building. Planetside starting doing this before EA did, and I played planetside too and it didn't freakin matter in either game. An elaborate hoax perpatrated for the amusment of Bill Gates that would never produce a functioning operating system that they would have to support. Not to mention the fact that the game they made is buggier than a swamp in August. If the people at EA had one good idea to sell games, it was to market the heck out of them and if they ever have a second, I hope it involves taking franchises away from studios that turn out inferior products. The third might be doing something about their mostly-worthless tech support, but well-crafted games could at least make that blemish less visible. Have worked my bag off to get high pointing ribbons only to have the server crash and the ribbon not register.. two times on one ribbon in the past two days alone.. 3: their support sucks. I bought the game used, had to spend 3 hours on the phone just to convince these bastards that I now own the game ( provided pictures with serial # and all ) and in the end I still had to use the sellers login account, EA reset my password, which wasn't too bad as I just made my own soldier.. HOWEVER my friend bought the game used and when he called EA they told him the person who dealt with me should be fired for giving out any info.. He had to use the sellers Login ID AND password which was a hassle since it had to go back 3 owners before he could find out the info ( as two previous owners bought but never played.. ) THAT is stupid money grabbin BS. ANother HUGE issue with this is that you CANNOT play this game at a friends with your own account, unless you reset the games install Serial Key to your own. Unlike BF2 where you could login your own soldier on a friends computer anytime. This one, you either need to reinstall each time or add the new Key to the registry, then change it back for your friends to use on their own Key and account. I am currently running with the full audio and graphics settings maxed out and the quality of the audio and graphics is second to none. The variety of weapons and the ability to specialize in Scouting, Assault, Engineering or Support is fantastic and each player will quickly find their own niche. As previously mentioned in other reviews, the vehicles are also excellent fun however with the right kit a soldier can take these out without too much effort. The medals, badges, pins and awards require the right amount of time and effort to achieve and open up the games unlocks as you advance through the ranks. The ability to form squads and multiplay with your friends is probably the best way to advance if you can all join together and tackle the game with strategic targets in mind. The only drawback which I have experienced is that connection does drop every 2 to 3 hours and this can be annoying at times, although in the majority of cases, the point you build up in the round which the crash occurs are still credited to your soldier so it is more of an inconvenience than anything else. Some of that might just be internet congestion related and beyond EAs control. As for the adverts, whatever you think about it as a way of generating revenue, the game is not interrupted to show them, they only show as billboards or posters in the cityscapes you fight in. After ~30 hours play, the only posters/billboards I've seen have been for fictional, in-game reasons. (Join the PAC army now etc.) So it is not at all intrusive. And as for the BF2 players, if you're giving this game a bad review because you like another game better, well thats just stupid. Personally, although BF2 is a great game, I marginally prefer BF2142 as the vehicles aren't as overpowered as in BF2. Along with having less classes but more specialisation makes BF2142 a more balanced game, where the player who managed to grab a certain vehicle first isn't going to have an overwhelming advantage over the other players. (Unlike in BF2 and the guy who permanently circles over your head in a jet). The gameplay is faster and more exciting, but more importantly, its more of an infantry game again and not so much a vehicles game. Expand

I say give it a chance or second chance if you didnt like it at the beginning. Expand

The game seems to be nothing but a bug. I would have given it 3, but it seems that EA is just out to make money, but not create good games anymore. They haven't fixed all the bugs in BF2. The only things they seem to be interested in is money and finding a way to stop cracks. Which is of course makes it harder for honest gamers. I personaly am boycoting both the BF franchise and NFS. If you took a screen shot of Battlefield 2142 and compared it to a screen shot of Barrlefield 2, there would be almost no difference between the graphics on the pictures. The really annyoning thing about BF 2142 is the backgrounds are either white and grey or brown. It's always snowing in most of the maps which makes it kind of annoying...Battlefield 2142 is basically an ultra awsome mod af Battlefield 2142. It's a wonderful purchase for Battlefield fans but, it's unnisential... Expand

Very good game, it is decent enough for a game in the Battlefield series. A few things about it though, you may agree with me on these: Pros - If you really think about it there are no real pros to this game. - Cons - Random disconnects from the master server if using a router, which quite a few people have. It is BASICALLY Battlefield 2 but with futuristic weapons and vehicles. In my oppinion, it tries too hard to be a futuristic game, they go even so far as to have a cloaking device! You don't get to have a defibulator(SP?) when Medic(which is actually Assault now.). I mean you have to unlock the defibulator! Is that stupid or what? To continue with that, there is no Medic class for all those who just want to help their fellow soldier and not really shoot unless they are threatened, it is almost like they added the medic "hub" as an after thought. No grenades to begin with! Don't get me wrong though, there aren't ALL bad things to this, it is still a decent game, I personally think it is okay, except for the stupid disconnects because I have a router. This game is pretty solid, but has plenty of bugs. The game is pretty balanced if you ask me. When I said above that there are no real pros in the game, I mean that there is nothing overly good about this game. It is decent enough, though if you haven't gotten BF2(Battlefield 2) yet and are thinking about getting this game instead, get Battlefield2! Battlefield 2 is the better buy at the moment, but I wouldn't count BF2142 out yet. It has potential. Expand

This is quite simply amazing I found this to be a much faster paced game than BF2, love the ranking system, love the weapons and vehicles, still a few problems like with any game with the pins rewards I.E. performing the criteria and not recieveing the pin can be quite frustrating but generally a vast improvement on the previous games.

While a very good game, and worth playing, 2142 just doesn't quite capture the solidity of Battlefield 2, runs a bit slower, has in-game ads, and a few issues. Peeves are as follows: 1- The Unlock system is 50% just removing all your standard abilities and making you have to work for them. You start out with NO ability to carry grenades, HALF the sprint as BF2, HALF the sprint recharge speed, NO mines, no shock paddles, no C4, no claymores,... and have to work like a dog just to get yourself back to being a "normal" soldier. Most people don't realize that, so the unlocks are still fun for them. 2- The player movement system has been bogged down, and the game loses a tremendous amount of solid feel by making you have gradually to accelerate when you move forward. Unlike BF2, where you can just start moving forward at good speed, you now feel like there's a delay whenever you press forward. Absolutely sucks. 3- There are in-game ads on billboards throughout the maps. I personally dont mind, because they look scratched beat up and match the scenery to some degree, but if corporate America gets any more fancy ideas, there's gonna be a shortage of game sales, guaranteed. 4- Runs a little slower than BF2, and combat in the Titan can get downright unresponsive. 5- Buggy and unstable / random master server disconnects for people on routers, constant server crashes, punkbuster kicks, etc. This is EA we're talking about, so no surprise. 6- The infernal TK Punish system is still around, you still lose an arm and leg for TKing (even a friendly mine kill)... infact, the only personal harm a TK won't do is jump out of the screen and stab you. TK's really make you hurt, and it sucks considering that 99.9% of TK's are accidental. 7- Can't shoot while jumping... ...At all. Can't even lob C4 over a wall. Nothing. Simply put, if you pull the trigger while in the air, nothing happens. I don't even need to begin describing how ludicrous this is, and how badly it hurts combat situations. -- All in all, other than the things mentioned, it's still similar to BF2, and still one of the best games around. While far from perfect, it still pwns enough to be well worth your time, for many, many hours to come. Expand

Disappointed in the "decrease" in single player bot support(something around 5 maps), online play is fun but weapons are weak (though upgrade system makes you pretty neat later on). It would've been impressive if EA took the time to support bots in more maps (like bf1942). But i'll give it credit for the titan mode.

Poor attempt on EA's part. They should have at least told Dice to update the engine since it has all the same problems as BF2 did. I agree this is just a glorified mod of BF2, so why magazines and websites rated it so high is beyond me. Doubt the majority of the reviewers even had a chance to play a real online game.

  1. It's certainly not gong to supersede the increasingy popular "Battlefield 2," as most of its merits merely held over from its predecessor, but nevertheless it's a brilliant evolution of one of the greatest online shooters ever made. And it's got giant walking tanks. [Dec 2006, p.62]
  2. Little more than "Battlefield 2" with mechs and gunships. In nearly every way, a round of 2142 plays out exactly like a round of its predecessor. Not that that’s a particularly bad thing, but for all intents and purposes this is a $50 mod.
  3. Battlefield 2142's new Titan mode is an exciting new addition to the Battlefield series, though for the most part 2142 offers up minor evolutionary improvements over its illustrious predecessor.
