May 3, 2016Battleborn merges cooperative and competitive, hero and shooter, loot and shoot into an excellent melting pot and symbol of the times. Charismatic characters, clever intricacies, and compelling gameplay make this one of the best multiplayer experiences of the generation yet.
-
May 2, 2016Battleborn could have easily been a soulless copycat of Borderlands or just another MOBA, but this is one fusion game that has its own identity and lays the solid groundwork for much more to come.
-
May 9, 2016An unorthodox and wacky shooter, Battleborn oozes style and charisma, but its deep and original game-system is not for everyone. The game will give a lot to those who can understand it, but might be a little misunderstood by those who are looking for instant gratification.
-
May 7, 2016I mentioned previously that there is something small missing from Battleborn and to be honest I’m still unsure of what it is. It might be the lack of a training room where you can test out different heroes, or the fact you can’t choose from all of the story missions in a public campaign group, or that you can’t stay with your group at the end of a successful campaign. In other words, there are many small details that add up to take away the sense of polish for the game.

Pelit (Finland)Jun 14, 2016Battleborn tries to wear too many hats at once. The shooter is filled with promise, but both the pvp and pve components need more content. And quickly. [June/July 2016]
-
May 23, 2016Battleborn, despite the simplistic nature of the combat and time limit issues, is still a fun jaunt, and one that has a ton of replayability due to the characters alone.
-
May 19, 2016If you’ve been eying the crop of team-based shooters coming out these days, wondering which to pick, I’d recommend Battleborn. The PVE campaign, it’s multi-layered and varied progression systems, and its Borderlands-esque humor make it a cut above the others still on deck. While it can often feel like Battleborn is trying to do too much at once, I’m glad it’s more ambitious than its genre brethren, because in the end there ends up being more meat on Battleborn’s bones because of its sky-high goals.
-
May 6, 2016Battleborn is a game easy to approch, but rich of long term content. Gearbox combined a Team Fortress 2-like frenzy with a free-to-play MOBA sheer content and variables, and the result, ultimately, is a fun game.
-
May 6, 2016The roster fits every conceivable style of play. A glorious and chaotic shooter where the most skilled players can challenge each other, while the less experienced will also have fun while taking part in it all.
-
May 6, 2016A good FPS with MOBA elements that can be enjoyed especially in multiplayer, although more on the PvP side than PvE.
-
May 6, 2016With many heroes and a lot of fun, Battleborn could have been much more... Unfortunately some balance problems and a lack of contents don't allow the new Gearbox game to shine as the star you are supposed to conquer in the adventure.
-
May 13, 2016Gearbox's trademark blend of action and humor stands out among these problems. It's certainly what carries the game over the finish line. But Battleborn is trying to be a lot of things and doesn't fully succeed in one particular place. There are a lot of potentially strong ideas floating around the game; if the developers can take the next few months sharpening some into a fine point, Battleborn may yet find its sweet spot.
-
May 8, 2016Battleborn offers an interesting approach to the MOBA and Shooter genres but remains in no man's land with respect to many of its mechanics. The co-op of the campaign and the Incursion Mode are gold, but the progression system is very artificial and the game seems less inspired compared to Borderlands.
-
May 10, 2016Battleborn drops some stitches in the campaign which can make it a tedious experience. The multiplayer has two modes with a lot of (unused) potential, which can turn out to become great if players start embracing it.
-
May 29, 2016The difference between a seminal and successful game and a game that ended up in no man's land between genres, is player attraction and retention. By marrying MOBA with FPS, Battleborn attempts to tap on both audiences yet it runs the danger to prove itself too much of a shooter for the MOBA diehards and too much of a MOBA for the FPS crowd.
-
May 11, 2016Classic Gearbox shooting with an experimental MOBA twist, but it’s no Borderlands.
-
May 2, 2016Battleborn's fun heroes and leveling will keep you hooked despite a lack of content.
-
May 23, 2016Battleborn is a good game, that provides plenty of fun but it's just incredibly frustrating seeing all of these tiny issues that come in and ruin the fun every so often.
-
Game World Navigator MagazineMay 18, 2016Gearbox had a great FPS-MOBA on their hands: loads of great characters, nice gameplay balance where everyone – melee and ranged DPS, support and tanks – had their roles to play. And they had to go and kill it with loot system that gives long-time players additional advantage over newcomers – not only they know maps and are better adjusted to local gameplay quirks, but they can literally have better stats right from the beginning of any match. [Issue#209, p.86]
-
May 17, 2016With its bizarre characters and their big range of skills, Battleborn has some very entertaining moments, especially when playing it with friends. Unfortunately the single-player missions are not very entertaining. Battleborn really is a game to play for the competitive multiplayer, but you will need to be okay with the repetitive and pretty standard hack and shooting action.
-
May 17, 2016Battleborn isn’t quite the innovative blend of MOBA and first-person shooter that it could have been, but that does not stop the game from delivering fun with a group of friends or random people online.
-
May 2, 2016The combat is frantic and tense, but often feels samey and superficial. The in-match leveling works wonderfully in the campaign, but can become problematic in multiplayer. The varied cast of heroes adds longevity, but the game still feels relatively content light. With so many moving parts that never quite gel, I found plenty of things to love but just as much to feel confused by and ambivalent about.
-
Jun 7, 2016Even with more than twenty playable characters, Battleborn fails to offer enough variety in its gameplay to keep players engaged for longer periods of time. And with an unfortunate release date, it is a game that will be forgotten in a matter of months.
-
May 25, 2016Battleborn is a complete gaming package - it has 25 interesting characters, tons of things to unlock and cool story-driven missions. It is a pity that it tries too much to be a game for everyone - there's something for fans of single-player games, something for fans of cooperation and something suited online competition. Overwatch focuses on one thing and is well polished, Battleborn more or less fails in every aspect and is only OK, nothing more.
-
Games Master UKJul 25, 2016A chaotic, middling effort that should be low on your team-based shooter priority list. [July 2016, p.72]
-
CD-ActionJul 21, 2016Battleborn can be enjoyable, but only with friends and only for so long, especially when there’s a better alternative – Overwatch. [07/2016, p.52]
-
PC PowerPlayJul 6, 2016Not enough content and too much grinding detracts from the great cast of characters and great presentation. [Issue#252, p.58]
-
LEVEL (Czech Republic)Jun 20, 2016Gearbox is still good at jokes and impressive styling. Unfortunately devs forgot to add more innovation. The result in a fossilized first person MOBA, that will neither offend nor thrill. [Issue#264]
-
Jun 1, 2016Unfortunately, there are better titles out there and the lack of identity was a real issue for me.
-
May 16, 2016There’s certainly a fair bit here for some to like, particularly for those of you who want a MOBA that’s less of a long-term commitment, and a heck of a lot of content to get your teeth into, but Battleborn’s development-by-focus-group leaves it feeling a little bland, despite its brash stylings and Borderlands-esque attitude.
-
May 3, 2016Battleborn has its moments, but its lack of maps and other niggling flaws makes it tough to recommend. There may well be a perfect FPS MOBA out there somewhere; but with Battleborn, the two genres feel fundamentally at odds with one another. It's not helped by its generic art direction and painfully unfunny sense of humor, which mostly consists of pointing toward some well-worn trope and asking, "Isn't that silly?" Right now, it feels geared toward the hardcore community in a way that makes it not very fun to play for more casual fans; and as Battleborn hasn't shown itself to be worth that kind of investment, I'm ready to take my leave of it.
-
May 19, 2016Humor remained, but everything else disappeared somewhere. Compared to Borderlands Battleborn suffers especially in terms of content, when the fast action is hidden under tragic cooperative campaign, matchmaking problems and the poor content. This is not a game without any potential, but this time it really pays off to wait for at least a couple of DLCs.
-
May 26, 2016Battleborn ended up stretching itself too thin by trying to include too many modes.
-
May 18, 2016Its humor goes nowhere — it has none of the cultural sting of something like “Grand Theft Auto V” or “The Magic Circle”– and while the game does offer players a slew of fighting styles to choose from, the thought of tackling similar objectives over and over to unlock new avatars leaves me numb. Battleborn is an okay shooter but it’s certainly not a memorable one.

Oct 19, 2016Still having a good time, but it’s more about the company than the activities...At least now I know which one Battleborn is. It’s the one that needs to do better by Shayne & Aurox.
-
May 10, 2016Battleborn isn’t a bad game in the sense that it lacks work or effort – the team has clearly put in the hours – it’s just that, for me, it’s an uninspiring result which can’t justify its hefty price tag.
-
May 24, 2016Battleborn isn’t a bad game. Gearbox has obviously lavished a lot of work onto its world, its characters, and the ways players move and fight. But it is a frustrating game, full of details that drain the joy it’s meant to invoke. From its emphasis on ornamentation over clarity, to the randomness and cruelty of its cooperative missions, it constantly trips itself on its attempted journey toward the pantheon of great, long-lived online shooters.
