Do not believe the hype, this game is soulless. It has one redeeming quality, its visuals, however the emptiness of the experience make the quality of the visuals meaningless. Everything about this game feels tedious, probably to cover up how all the development budget went into making it look nice. It's grindy, it's unbalanced, there's no roleplaying, the loot is boring, the crafting is laborious, and overall it's just a supremely unrewarding experience. Anyone who tells you to wait until NG+ should be thrown in prison, there is nothing new or interesting waiting for you. This game is a huge timesink, and you're better off playing almost any other RPG.

When travelling overland, an icon shows you the position of enemies. Unfortunately, there seems to be no way to check their level, or how many there are (apart from a symbol that shows more than 1 wave of enemies), or the type of monster (apart from the first one in the group) so you can easily end up wandering into a battle where you have no chance.

The game throws tons of crafting materials at you, but oddly enough, you can only craft items inside a dungeon, at a specific location.

When exploring a dungeon, you only get to control one of your characters at a time - the other members in your party just "disappear". It's a bit stupid as you get some platform and lever type puzzles which would be made easier if you could have all the characters in your party participating, but you only get to control one.

Combat is really boring with your party of 3 against up to 3 enemies at a time in a turn based format where you typically spam the same abilities over and over. The enemies seem to do more damage than your party but typically have lower health, except for bosses, which are frustrating to fight against as they often have area of effect abilities that can take off half your party's health or a special attack that can one-shot one of your characters.

Grinding is forced on you as your characters will inevitably be underlevelled each time they get to a new dungeon area, and fighting enemies of higher level than your party is not a good idea, as they tend to do far more damage. The monsters on the overland map respawn after you rest at an inn so you often just find yourself aimlessly wandering the countryside of search of extra experience points.

Dialogue is very simplistic and seems to be aimed at preteens, plus the music is almost nonexistent and the voice acting quite limited.

I got this game on special off Steam and played for about 12 hours before getting fed up and uninstalling during a frustrating boss fight. With a better combat system and less need for grinding, this game could be pretty good, but in its current state, it's probably more suited to being played as a mobile game when you have some time to kill during a boring meeting at work.

I want to start out this review by saying that I am in no way experienced in turn-based RPGs. This is the first game in the genre that I've beaten. It's not a genre I am particularly good at or interested in. Regardless, I have an opinion and the kind folks of Metacritic are going to let me say my piece. Though that piece will be more relevant to newcomers of the genre like I.
    Let's start
I want to start out this review by saying that I am in no way experienced in turn-based RPGs. This is the first game in the genre that I've beaten. It's not a genre I am particularly good at or interested in. Regardless, I have an opinion and the kind folks of Metacritic are going to let me say my piece. Though that piece will be more relevant to newcomers of the genre like I.
Let's start with the narrative. The narrative is... there. There is dialogue, though it is awkward and largely unnecessary. I still can't work out why I needed my experience to be interrupted for a 5 minute conversation on how big the visually big gate is. Or why every battle starts out with a minute of flavour text, though I use the word 'flavour' loosely. Personally I've found more flavour in a bowl of vanilla ice-cream cereal topped with white chocolate. Usually it just ends up with one of my heroes kindly explaining to the random, unintelligent bat how slim his chances of victory are. Thanks Calibretto, I really needed that. Otherwise, the story is generic fantasy tale number B, including an uninteresting cast of supposedly complex heroes who are as two-sided as a one-way mirror, a generic big bad evil and an overreaching dark wizard; sound familiar?
All this to say that the box-art feature of this game is that it has absolutely no respect for your time. If their invention of the time-consuming-lack-of-plot wasn't enough, then I'm here to talk gameplay. And oh boy, is there a lot of gameplay.
Not to say there's a lot of unique gameplay, or depth of gameplay, just that you have to do a lot of it. Welcome to a world where abilities are mostly useless as everything is measured solely in damage, not utility or strategy. Meaning if you're having trouble with a fight then you're not playing it wrong, you just forgot to do your mandatory 2-3 hour grind for levels and gear between dungeons. And even then several enemies are still given oceans of health and damage, meaning back to the grinding board for you. One-shots are all too common in an otherwise snail-pace game, supposedly about tactics and wise use of abilities. Again, no respect for your time. And don't even ask me about the final boss which, for the average player, simply isn't viable with most party makeups. It's Garrison or nothing.
Levelling and collecting gear is slow too. And I wouldn't expect your grinding of dungeons to drop relevant gear, because that occurs less than a benevolent politician. Even when completing a dungeon on legendary, the highest difficulty in the regular game, expect no more than 1-2 pieces of gear, and both will usually be for a character not in your current party. I understand not every player will have that problem. It's up to luck. But it shouldn't be. Why isn't gear dropped at least somewhat weighted towards the characters used to collect it. This shouldn't be a problem for any player. Truth is, I argue this though I know it's of no consequence. Farming dungeons for gear is a waste of time. At this point 'Waste of Time' should be Battle Chasers subtitle. 'Nightwar' is generic enough to be accurate too though. Instead, crafting is the path to usable gear. Now I already hear you asking; why is crafting in a turn-based RPG with a loot system, and why is it absolutely necessary for beating the game?
Well, dear students, the answer is simple:
Hell if I know. Minecraft, I spose'
So have fun grinding out ancient vampire acne which drops randomly from a randomly spawning monster in a randomised dungeon. Oh look, lots of ludicrous RNG for necessary loot, or in other words "example #153 of how this game has zero respect for your time." This is an MMO worthy time gate, yet without the reason of selling subscriptions or DLC. It's there as a conscious effort in wasting away one's short life, I assume. There's no other reason for it. It's not fun or challenging.
So if the game is a dull grind, with cheap combat and enemies, and a plot so bare-bones it would make an elephant graveyard envious, then what is there to enjoy? Well not the art style or music. Hey kids, can you say 'generic fantasy soundtrack?' Because you'll be saying that with every monotone track you hear, and that extends to sound effects too. That second part is a particular shame as strong sound effects could negate the lame combat animations that not only don't represent exciting action, but actually work to erase that phrase from your mind. No more can I watch an animation of giant war machine readying a giant party heal in a close up camera shot with shadows falling over the background only for him to prepare a tiny little ball of magic, lift his arms up slightly as some green washes over characters' feet with a faded groan sound weaker than my morning wake-up groans. And, of course, it's unskippable. Battle Chasers: Nightwar "Wasting your life seconds at a time" TM.
I wondered how this game could be so lame and wasteful, but then I found it on Google Play Store. It's a mobile game.

The biggest issues with the game are some questionable design decisions like only being able to craft in dungeons or apply enchants in very specific locations. Most of what you accumulate from drops is crafting loot, but 90% of the time gear you can craft is severely dwarfed by items you can buy or earn from the Heroic or Legendary dungeon completion boxes.

Difficulty is also wildly inconsistent as trash enemies often posed a more annoying threat than dungeon bosses. The exception to this being some of the Hunt targets; in particular the Mire of the Deep hunt boss only has two attacks and one is a group wide attack with heavy damage plus a severe poison effect. If you get unlucky and he only uses this attack the fight becomes basically un-winnable.

Nightwar is a competent game but fails in some vital areas to rise above other classic style turn-based RPGs; especially coming out in the same year as the exceptional Persona 5 and Divinity: Original Sin 2.

I stopped playing the game after 20h. I am sad that I lost 20h on a game that was not worth it.

    PROS:
    Great mechanics.
    Beautiful graphics.
    Badass characters.
    Good Combat.
    Loots, armors, weapons and upgrades.

    CONS:
Story is pretty boring. It could have had more soul to it.
Level of difficulty is very bad balanced. Its not impossible to finish the game. But you need to put hell a lot of time in farming up XP. And I find that stupid. Farming now and then is cool put forcing to farm hundreds of hours is stupid...

So the cons... when the game is generic, is SUPER GENERIC, when it is not trying too much it's not trying at all, you can get to a grind block even if you play the story and every enemy, game uses % which make a single level the difference between dying in a dungeon and breezing through it. The story seeming like something new, but has a pitiful twist with a cliff hanger and mostly feels generic.
The combat seemed good, but it's only the variety of stages that keeps you going, since the enemies after stage 3 will be recycle and repurposed.
Voice acting varies from great to trash, when you find the best comp you won't use the others in any circumstance, the world is way too small.
Lots of questions, especially the first one in the story, is not answered and completely forgotten.

Difficulty seems to still be a problem, even after the patch, you gotta do a lot of XP farming because the difficulty gap goes sky rocket after you reach lvl 10. So always try to be at least 3 or 5 levels above the required level for some missions and hunts.

If you are NOT a fan of turn based RPG, then this game won't be for you, because the characters take quite sometime to attack due the animations. Don't get me wrong, the animations for each normal and special attacks are well made, but for some people they feel kinda slow.

The hybrid between a comic and Japanese roleplay is amazing. But the really great thing is the fights, which, while being classic, are graphically spectacular, especially with regard to animations and visual effects. Very deep then the system of progression of the characters and the system of creation of objects and armaments. In the end, this game is a masterpiece and costs very little for what it is worth.

so the Team of heroes Garrion, Calibretto, Gully, Knolan, and Red Monika set out to protect Gully and her fathers gauntlets, however are run a ground by pirates and are split up, the main party is Gully (tank), Calibretto (healer), and Garrion (DPS) then finding the others through out the story, i stuck with the main 3, i felt they had more potental however that could just be because you play with them and learn the combos so i might of just gotten comfortable with them.

after finding out these bandits are after cursed artifacts the team decides they need to find the source. i just want to point out quickly, i love that at 1st glance you think Calibretto will be the tank being a massive war golem, and gully will heal. this is quickly displelled, and i love it, have the story of "Protect Gully" but realising she protects everyone else in combat warms my cold void heart.

Mixed game. It's a blend between action rpg (real time dungeons exploration with puzzle elements like Zelda) and turn based rpg (combat is turn based japan-console style)
Good visual, good price on gog (for an indie game), easy to grasp, not too long.
Problems lies in: a) repetitive gameplay expecially during fights...you will use the same moves over and over again

    b) Lots of grinding
    c) Very few npcs with almost no interactions with the party and almost no dialogues
But this game have some potential and probabily (if they have more money to invest) it could have a good sequel .

This is the type of game that should be an automatic hit for RPG players, but there is something missing in the complete package. The graphics are good, and typical genre staples are present, but ultimately it gets lost in itself. Overall this is a solid title, but in the end it lacks heart. It does everything averagely, and nothing especially rises above, or provides anything unique - unfortunate, as its ingredients definitely lend itself to what might have been a really great game.

The fact that sometimes you just can’t avoid grinding dials back the excitement, but doesn’t kill it. Battle Chasers: Nightwar is a fun game with extraordinary graphics, a real treat to a fan of the genre. [Issue#226, p.36]
