  1. One of the better looking shooters around, with spectacular special effects, "Gunship" is a worthy contender for "Freespace"'s throne.
  2. Does provide quite a pop! in fun factor, a zoom! in the adrenaline sector, and lands with a pow! in the winner's department.

Shallow scenarios and a killer difficulty level snipe away at the title's longevity.

Our suggestion: turn off the lights, crank your speakers, get some Jolt! Cola and a couple of Lik-A-Stiks and settle in for a few hours of happy-go-lucky brain and teeth rot.

A straight-up old-school space shooter dressed to kill.

If you're looking for a game that brings back the glory days of mindless arcade shooters, then "Bang! Gunship Elite" is the game for you.
  7. If what you're after is an action-packed, no-brain shooter than Bang! Gunship Elite's gorgeous, high-speed, intense battles will surely do the trick.
  8. "Elite's" worst problem is that there's no real incentive in it -- the lack of story and repetitive combat offer no good reason to stick with the game.
  9. Overall, this is one of those games that gets high marks for style, but could have used a bit more work in the substance department.
  10. Stacked against the genre's competition, this game was scraped from the bottom of the barrel, but if what you want is a straight-forward, good-looking destructo-fest, "B!GE" should be considered.

It looks good and plays fast, but lacks the refinement and complexity that space combat fans have come to expect.
  12. With its luscious graphics that beg to be stared at, it’s a shame that Bang!’s gameplay isn’t a little more involving.
  13. Another example of a game that sports graphics that make you want to stand up and cheer and gameplay that induces hair loss due to nerve-bending frustration.

Shoot stuff, it explodes. Repeat as desired until you either blow up or get tired of it, whichever comes first. [Oct 2000, p.129]
  15. "Bang! Gunship Elite" proves yet again that eye candy alone cannot sustain a title, as the vast majority of its gameplay proves to be extremely tedious.

Gunship Elite" provides a genuinely thrilling experience. The story serves it's purpose, but the game is carried entirely by it's atmosphere and gameplay. The atmosphere is exciting (and if you are a fan of the great expanse, then very great to fly around), and the gameplay, although simple, is effective at being both fulfilling and fun. Do give it a shot if you have time to spare, and are aching to try something different. Full Review »

Sure, the missions get tedious from time to time and the number of times they manage to restate and objective of "go here and kill all these things" is impressive, the reality is that it's a fun little game. It doesn't have Freespace's story arc, but it doesn't really need that. This isn't a game you bing for 12 hours, it's a game you jump in for a mission or two and then go on with your day. It's a great excursion into an uncomplicated world of arcade style combat where the most difficult choice you have to face is whether you destroy the enemy with missiles or guns. Recommended to anyone who loves a frantic shooter and isn't opposed to an hour of solid chaos to break up their day. Full Review »
