Bottom line for me is gameplay is not fun.

Graphics are fine, game runs fine, seems to have enough depth, controls feel fine. But the game is just not fun to play. Obviously this is pretty subjective, but I just do not enjoy it and I love shooters and play a lot of these style of games in coop with my friends. I want to say the problem is the zombies are too fast and spawn everywhere

I want to say the problem is the zombies are too fast and spawn everywhere around you which makes the combat basically spin, spray, and kite, but I don't know if that is the reason I don't like it...
If you are looking for this type of game, try Aliens: Fireteam Elite. It is very similar in the level of polish etc, but the gameplay is much more fun.

Made an account just to review this - What an amazing disappointment. My core gaming group STILL plays L4D2 once or twice a month just because it's such a fantastic game. This is a lessor game in every single way, but most importantly, the lack of PVP campaign mode is just an unforgivable oversight.

As others have mentioned there are TONS of 4-player co-op games out there, many of them better than this one. Killing Floor 2, Deep Rock Galactic, Dead by Daylight, the list goes on. What there AREN'T a lot of are 4v4 pvp campaign mode games out there. We haven't found even one decent one since L4D2. That's why Back 4 Blood was so exciting. The lack of literally the only thing that could have set this apart in it's genre is shocking, and I have no idea how it made it out of the initial design process without someone at the table pointing this out. Way to lose literally half your user base right out of the gate, Turtle Rock. Whoever made that design call should be fired immediately, they cost you millions.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The biggest gripe I see with this game is “it’s repetitive” - news flash, every game is repetitive. It’s kind of the whole angle of video games. If you’re looking for the next L4D - here it is. The card system took some getting use to, the game could have done a better job at explaining that you’re meant to play through on “Easy” before you attempt higher difficulty….aside from that hiccup, it’s awesome. The story is ho-hum, but after some time with the game I can say the characters are the best we’ve had since OG L4D. The dialogue is varied and hilarious, the gunplay is sharp and the overall gameplay loop is extremely reminiscent of L4D. All that got added were cards (which are a lot of fun at higher difficulty levels) and the round-round “upgrade” mode like you see in any CS game. It actually works pretty well at keeping rounds fresh but stagnates a little when you’re waiting for human players to finish picking their load out. All in all an amazing game. One I was worried about after playing Beta but the amount of polish they managed to add between then and release makes me very hopeful this will be a well supported game. Despite angry community leeches that got it for free just to realize…”Oh no it’s not another Fortnite COD clone! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH”. 10/10 Expand

'Back 4 Blood' is still a good game in the first person shooting games with zombie theme. It provides a relatively short and refreshing stimulating experience, but the sustainable development of the game is not optimistic at present. I would say this game is fun to mess around with friends for a bit, but not worth playing solo. A £50 price tag for this seems incredibly steep, I would say absolutely don't buy at that price, just play it on XBox Gamepass for a month, you'll be bored of it in that time.

This game was such a disappointment that I made an account on this website just to review it. I have no clue why the reviews are so positive from journalism outlets, it's actually confusing, although critic reviews vs User score for this game are almost identical when compared to Evolve, Turtle Rocks' previous dumpster fire, so maybe there's something to that.

Online is broken on several levels, matchmaking seems broken on a mechanical level but that's just how it feels I obviously can't say that's a sure thing, not to mention the massively overcomplicated "run" system, which seems to have no real purpose for existing other than to ruin your day, making matchmaking very complicated. Single player locks you out of progression so that's a no go, and the bot AI is unplayably bad, unless you intend to do what I tried and just coax them into being cannon fodder for zombies to chew on while you shoot at them, which only works on the lowest difficulty (sometimes). There's this whole card system and lots of other stuff that just leaves you feeling like it's a super ham-fisted MTX / keep you playing / we want to make lots of money and have recurring players kind of thing, because otherwise it just feels forced and purposeless.

The system of having weapon attachments would be super cool except you can't swap attachments between guns so if you have a bunch of great attachments and find a cooler gun with no attachments you have to make a really un-fun decision in that moment. Oh and also there's this super weird weapon rarity system? It's not explained very well (in fact most of the overcomplicated nonsense was poorly or not at all explained) and also weapons have stats now? Stats that are affected by attachments? And somehow they felt it was good game design to put lengthy stat texts and super small attachment identifier icons with tons of text and numbers into a game where you're supposed to be dashing around while being chewed on by hordes of zombies that are trying to overwhelm you with numbers? Yeah lemme just stop for two minutes and compare these two guns and decide whether dropping these attachments is worth it while the special infected (which can literally spawn in the same room as you because that system is broken too) quickly encroach and surround me and my team of bots, one of which is stuck inside a wall atm. Great game design.

It really feels like they tried to Frankenstein together Apex Legends, Fortnite, Dead by Daylight, and 7 Days to Die then 6 months before release they remembered this was supposed to be a Left 4 Dead game too and so they tossed in explodable propane tanks and mechanics that alert the horde and called it a day.

The truly tragic part about this game is that it has all the potential needed to have made the most incredible successor to the L4D series that you could've ever dreamed of as a fan of the series, but that potential was taken and scattered in all the wrong directions. The guns are very responsive, the designs of them are great, the array of them to choose from is great, the graphics aren't really great for 2021 but they're plenty to make you feel immersed and engaged, the attachments are really nice looking and add really fun depth to the weapons, there are lots of levels to play through, and even some interesting takes on old designs like the safe room mechanic, but instead of focusing on making a great L4D game they fell into the exact same traps that have been dragging devs, and the industry as a whole, into a deep deep pit for so long now.

Instead of making a game that people play because it's fun, that has infinite replay value because it's well made, and that's a huge monetary success because it wasn't made to be a huge monetary success - you get a game that people play because it's systems force them to, that has infinite replay value because they don't want you playing other games, and isn't going to be a huge monetary success for the same reason that chasing clout never really makes you famous.

On the bright side the guns are fun to use so if you have too much money and not enough sense then maybe that's worth $60 to you. Honestly just go play L4D2 or buy one of the countless zombie games released over the last 10 years because I've played almost all of them and this is one of the worst.

Real shame, I could be having a ton of fun right now with a game I dreamed about as a kid playing L4D2, but c'est la vie I suppose.

Pros - card system giving you bonuses vs corruption cards played by the director (making for a different game each time)

Cons - crappy solo game, bots get stuck a lot, if you retreat the bots don't follow and prefer to move forward with out you, weapons are not realistic, weapons are bland, infected are bland, the bosses are bland, different times of ammo?, character personalities are meaningless, monetary system for buying weapons? Really? During a pandemic? maybe have one or two people who are trying to profit yes, but having to pick up cash? Stupid! weapons still require you to pull the bolt even if you leave a round in the chamber, there is a huge delay with reloading (such as with the shotgun), no smart ass comments like in L4D and L4D2, no ability to bump multiple dead with the butt of the weapon, loss of everything when you run out of restarts, NO CONSOLE? NO MODS? NO PRIVATE SERVER? Geez. WTF? That's an automatic failure in my book.

(edit) I have noticed several problems when slipping off an area in to water. You drown instantly? And there is no recovery? This is something I do not like about the game.

Also the way the maps are setup. Sure it gives you a mix of maps to do what they call a "run", but if you fail a run you have to start it all over again.

And if you have extra team slots, and you are carrying 2/3 1st aid kits, you can not pick up a different item to fill the extra slot. You either carry 3/3 1st aid kits or you drop the 2/3 items and pick up the one item.

This is poorly thought out. If I have three slots to carry something then let me cycle through those items by pushing the '3' key multiple times until I get to the item I want. So if I wanted to, I should be able to carry a defib, a bandage and a 1st aid kit. Poorly design.

There are plenty of things I like, but more stuff I do not like. They really didn't improve the game. They made some interesting changes but they didn't go all out. I expected more.

The game is fun and even better with friends. Back 4 Blood is a more challenging and replayable version of the Left 4 Dead series. I poured hundreds of hours into l4d 1 and 2, but this game makes expert mode feel like a cakewalk compared to this.

The game is very solid overall, but I am going to reduce the score because of the PvP not being in the campaign.

For example, why do the military does not trust the cleaners, which is what he says at the beginning of Act 2 I think (he was very clear about the fact they they should earn his trust), I don't know (and I don't care).

The objectives are not interesting, and the same objectives are reused several times in the game, and they are not well explained. They are also bugged, i encountered a game breaking bug in Act 2 when I destroyed the three nests which blocked the progression, including the final bug one, but the game considered that I only destroyed one. Restarting the level did not fix this, I thing I should have quit and restarted the game.

The objectives are also often totally disconnected from the flow of the game, leading to the player have absolutely zero engagement to do them (except that he must, or he can not continue the level). The characters are 100% engaged, but not the player.

The Director seems to still be bugged since the Beta. And his way to give challenge is to put several specials of the same type (and make them much more resistant to bullets). Their only tactics is to go to the players in a straight line (from afar if its outside).

There are a LOT of invisible walls everywhere, some of them are of a special type which don't prevent to cross this invisible line but lead to the immediate death of the player.

-The hype of a Left4Dead successor falls immediately flat.
-Not one innovative level or gameplay idea. Everything here you've seen before elsewhere.
-Story and missions are just not very compelling or engaging like Left 4 Dead's story.
-Gameplay becomes very repetitive. No director that really mixes things up. After two or three playthroughs of a mission, it offers nothing new except farming for cards.
-Movement and reflexive shooting is sluggish and nerfed for console-style aiming.
-Specials aren't interesting, unique, or add to levels. Shoot the red spot and move on.
-Card system is interesting, but simply doesn't add enough to warrant more playthroughs to mine them. Plus, mining card systems suck.
-Very uneven difficulty. Some levels far too easy, others impossibly difficult.
-Follow AI is terrible - they just teleport and snap places.
-Not one noteworthy technical achievement. Looks and feels like any of the 100 other FPS shooters out there.
-Definitely not worth $59 when older games like L4D/WWZ/etc are more fun and sell for $10.

L4D was a technical and gameplay achievement for it's time. It raised the bar and re-defined what a zombie shooter could be. The sad truth is that there's not one real area where this game is better, or even as good as, Left 4 Dead - let alone surpassing it. Which is really sad since L4D came out 13 years ago.

Great game, the real evolution of L4D, while L4d offers a simpler fun experience, B4B takes that concept and expands it thanks to the card system the corruption cards makes every run different adding more challenges, stronger zombies or special infected and at the same time you get to buff your character with your own cards deck boosting your favorite playstyle.

    - Ai Director does a great job (most of the time) with awesome random moments
-Lots of guns that are fun to use (sawed off is a bit meh)
    - Audio sounds great especially when using 3D audio or surround sound
    - Replay value is high

    Bad
-special ridden spawn rate is a bit excessive. It definitely needs to be toned down but not as much as the beta
-special ridden can be a bit hard to distinguish. They need more character and sound effects to cue when one is nearby
-Needs a 4th difficulty. The jump from Rookie to Veteran is insane. Especially with the spamming of “Special” Ridden.
-Versus is okay nothing really special.
-Single Player can’t get achievements or any progress in general. All cards are unlocked right out of the gate. -Always online game

All together it is a very fun game. Don’t go into this expecting a story just like Left 4 Dead it is all about gameplay and replay ability. I hope versus campaign makes a come back but for now PVE is great. This game has a lot of potential I just hope they can iron things out soon and I believe this game can be amazing.

    Pro's
    - Graphically satisfying environment with descent level design
    - Clever (though reused from other genre's) mechanics in some levels (for example, planting explosives to sink a ship under pressure of a horde)
    - Good coop encouragement in the implementation
    - Cross platform play, allowing me to play Steam players while owning the PC version of the Xbox game pass
    - Varied dynamics of play (albeit from the 'card' system)

    Con's
    - Lacks the same tension, relax, scramble atmosphere found in L4D
    - Zombies (ridden?) look a little cartoonish to me
    - Too many weapons, overly complex system for weapons.
    - Oddly immersion killing "store" system in each safe room to "purchase" things. Weird in an apocalyptic setting where weapons and resources should be scavenged
    - Card system is another immersion killer, just seems weird though the varying game play makes replay qualities better. Wished they would have done something different
    - Mousing issues with high poll rate mice
    - The "special" ridden all look the same to me, less character though varied in their attack methods they are still not as interesting as L4D for example.
    - This is a big one: No support for mods or community created content. This alone will make the product life cycle less than a year, where as L4D has been living well for > 10 years.

I do not dislike the game, but I am not overly ecstatic about it either. My first encounter with the game during beta gave much more negative impression, playing some more of the release (via game pass) I have warmed up to it a little more. Not worth 60 bucks though, maybe 15 when/if on sale.

Although it´s gameplay is really fun besides some annoying bugs and horrid soloplay, the game fails to offer enough endgame-content to motivate much further than for it´s six to ten hour long campaign.

    Back 4 Blood features:
    - $60 price tag
    - A rather tangible promise for microtransactions
    - Lacklustre gunplay with cartoony-fast animations, artificial recoil that tries to mimic Call of Duty
    - Unreservedly pathetic gore system. Left 4 Dead 2 had a much more sophisticated and advanced dismemberment; zombies could be torn apart in many different pieces in many different ways, and the weapon caliber dictated the amount of visual damage on zombies. This game, though? Only the head and the limbs can be shot off. Shooting the body results in generic low-res overlay. Very contemporary, very modern.
    - A card perk system.............. why?
    - Uninspiring, one-type level design with little variation. Also, the levels are claustrophobic, linear and lack verticality. Most of these have you go from point A to point B, some others need you to destroy a couple of objects. The finale of the 1st act has a howitzer you need to fire 5 times and then escape (all the shells lie a few metres away).
    - A lack of the Director AI, one of the hallmarks of the original L4D series that made it great.

But the core problem of this game is that it tries to copycat Left 4 Dead one-to-one. It copied (or tried to) the scenarios, the special infected, the PvP, the gameflow. Do you know what usually happens when you try to copycat something?

Back 4 Blood is an inferior L4D for $60. It's inferior to L4D, it pretends to be AAA despite having a B-game quality and hence is inferior to every other $60 game out there. It brings nothing new to the L4D formula. A 2019, L4D-inspired World War Z does a much better job at being a L4D clone than its direct successor.

This game doesn't measure up to a 12-year-old source game, and is a time killer at its best. Avoid it at any cost above $10.

No PVP Campaign which made the previously developed Left 4 Dead game so great. No idea why this decision was made, but it was a poor one.

Basically left 4 dead 2 with some improvements (not enough improvements after 10 years !)

The maps and atmosphere are worst than the previous 2 games and I don't think it worths 60 dollars.
On top of that, they want you to pay for extra content while there is a clear lack of content on the base game ...

Dont buy the game at least right now. Media is overhyped by l4D nostalgia. Controls are not good with a controller. There is no dismemberment. I dont get why press did not notice the zombie physics and gore are just bad and outdated in this game. and this should be a top priority. There is just no satisfaction in killing zombies after a few hours...

So far I absolutely love the game. It is such an improvement over what the beta was and I am definitely glad I bought the deluxe edition. The card system in the game is a little daunting as well, but once you get into it you begin to understand it more and enjoy it and each run does actually feel different because of the card system. Each corruption card which makes the enemies you face more difficult or you then have to deal with a new one altogether makes it more interesting and different for each playthrough, including the atmosphere changes, like the power is out or there is fog covering the map makes each run different and enjoyable. So besides the no solo progression the game has been a blast and I see myself playing this for a long time and I can't wait for future updates. Expand

Before I start my review, I got to say how unreal it is, about every "review site" so far is pretty much ignoring swarm, what should be half the game for a AAA Price at 60 €, or 100 € for ultimate.

I'm a left 4 dead day 1 player, left 4 dead 2 and all I played was versus, so I don't really care much about the co-op campaign.
They sold back 4 blood as being a spiritual successor to left 4 dead, so I would expect a proper pvp mode, swarm just feels like it got slapped on in about a month, just to say, we got pvp, what the community wanted.
Trust me, swarm is not wat 95% of players want, you can tell by the huge amount of rage quitting.
Either they ran out of time to create a proper campaign pvp, given the game got delayed twice, or the lead of the team is so out of touch with what the community actually wanted for a pvp mode.
"This will do, we make our gamepass and pre-order money".
Even after the massive wave of versus player refunds.
It feels like, let's take a couple things that are popular now from other games, battle royale circle, scavenging for weapons and items and make it extremely "replayable".
Well, they call it getting fast games, and being able to attack alot.
It's not even remotely fun, interesting or tactical.
You just attack, attack, with no real way to use tactics.
And the shrinking circle removes even more of the 1% of tactics originally used on the slightly larger map.

Beating the other team by 1 second to win, well, you might won the round.
But overall, everyone loses playing this mode.
Turtle Rock had every opportunity to create something great here, it baffles me they went this road, giving the excuse the ridden were better at ambushing, and it just didn't work well to have another mode, or campaign pvp.

You are the game devs, and with some proper leadership, you find a way to make it work.
Rather than saying, this will do.

If there was any decent lead on this team, you create the maps and ridden with campaign pvp in mind, not as an afterthought.

I can imagine valve was the true brain and lead when left 4 dead 2 was created, but having the audacity to ask a 60 € AAA price when the base campaign is below average at best and fairly short, and pvp is probably the worst executed pvp mode I have ever seen.

Extreme replayability, not really, every game of swarm goes down thesame.
The cleaners find the best camp spot, the ridden just attack, attack with no real strategy, or teamplay , eventually you'll take them down as you evolve your ridden and start doing more damage and they end up in a tiny circle.

If you actually manage to get a full game and finish it before atleast several members rage quit, making you lose all progress for your wins.

If you completely ignore how terrible pvp is, there is more!
No modding, no pvt servers, always online, denuvo, worthless ultimate edition, massive amounts of microtransactions, splitting up the community with paid maps, sure you can play it if a member of your party owns it, other than that, you pay ! Cringe dialogue between characters, litterally no gore, lazy ridden design, variants are just copy paste with other abilities, alot of them are just tanky bullet sponges no couch co-op/splitscreen.

If you are looking for a proper campaign co-op game, world war Z is way more fun and actually feels it has a soul, rather than back 4 blood, designed with monetization in mind.

Now I hope some actual review sites start taking a critical look at pvp, which should be half the game as it's the only other mode, at a tripple A price point, even if they enjoy the co-op and don't touch pvp.

Back 4 blood is selling you nostalgia, that's one thing it does right.
It makes me wanting to go back to left 4 dead, because having the perfect opportunity to create a spiritual successor, and totally blowing it, that's the nostalgia right there.

Not as good as L4D. Equally chaotic and good. Special infected/riddends appear way too often and are too strong, customization on guns could have some work, and levels are not as iconice and varied, still, very fun to play with friends and can expect to get better.

It is a great game, the campaigns are fun and the card system (used for customization) is well thought out. If I only judged on gameplay, graphics, and single player campaign, this can easily be a 9/10. However I rated this game a 5 because of their false advertising. It was advertised, and I pre-ordered on the assumption, that this would be like left 4 dead. The lack of Online PVP Campaign is the sole reason this review isn't a 9 or a 10.

The only online PVP supported is the underwhelming Swarm game mode. Swarm has humans survive as long as possible against player controlled Ridden. There is no motivation for the human side to keep moving, or do anything other than camp for as long as possible.

The game is an extreme disappointment to any Left 4 Dead fan who appreciated Left 4 Dead's online campaign mode. I wish I could directly give this feedback to the company that this "infinitely replayable" is actually less replayable than left 4 dead series. Online PVP campaign was a cornerstone of the series, and leaving it out makes it painfully clear that this game will not be as popular or garner a userbase for the next 12 years as left 4 dead franchise has. Additionally, playing against robots instead of humans limits the ability of a competitive scene to grow.

There are remarks from the developers that it would be too unbalanced to add PvP campaign, so why not balance it? Please WB, if you care about appeasing the fans add a game mode for online campaign.

The guns are all punchy and feel viable with an interesting rarity/attachment system that always makes me hesitate and consider when to switch weapons and gear. The card system implements the deck builder rogue-lite aspect I love from games like Slay The Spire, which although obviously a remotely different game, Turtle Rock pulls it off beautifully in a way that makes almost any playstyle effective and worth trying. With only being in the first days of release, I'm sure minor bugs (which I personally haven't encountered) and smaller things people have gripes about will be fixed. I consider this game totally worth the cost, however I would heavily recommend playing with friends as the bots can be a bit incompetent, occasionally they do a great job, and other times they stand in the corner getting mauled before sprinting headlong into the nearest boomer/spitter amalgam. So all in all, it may not be Left 4 Dead and while there are things missing, in the end however, Back 4 Blood is a very good game that is worth the time to play and recommend.

Back 4 Blood is one of those games that you don’t have to particularly worry about grinding, which is incredibly refreshing. Between grinding for in-game currency for dungeon gear in FFXIV, and trying to level up my weapons in Dauntless, it’s nice to have a game I can jump back into with my friends at any point in time and just play. It’s fast-paced, creative, and just all-around good fun. What’s not to love? The game has been out for a while, but that just means that the developers have had more time to listen to feedback and start fixing some of those bugs that have been bothering players.

Along the way, many mutated creatures cross your path. These include not only the classic slow undead, but whole hordes of super-fast and agile, bloodthirsty zombies - called ridden in the game - to gigantic monstrosities that can send you to oblivion with a single punch. Those nine different types of opponents provide enough variety in the challenges to keep the game engaging for hours.

One step forward, two steps back, couple steps to the side with some awkward shuffling thrown in-between – that’s how Back 4 Blood feels compared to Left 4 Dead. Card-based power-up system is the only interesting thing about it. [Issue#256, p.40]
