Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist & the White Guardian may not break much new ground for Gust’s long-running series, but it delivers a heartfelt mix of streamlined alchemy, lively combat, and a moving storyline about loss and renewal. It’s less about reinvention and more about the power of periodic emotional pull.

Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist & the White Guardian follows the series’ established path while refining systems that were already well-received in past entries. Its combat and alchemy are among the stronger aspects of the series, and though exploration feels fairly standard, details like the tracking function noticeably improve the experience. For longtime fans, the chance to reunite with many familiar faces may be its greatest strength.

Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist & The White Guardian is a grand time in the Atelier series. It is fun and returns to the roots of the series, even by bringing back past characters from the series. It still suffers from the difficulties of the previous Atelier games, but fans will love it.

All in all, Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist & the White Guardian is a slow-paced but cute JRPG with an expansive crafting system. If you like Atelier games, you’ll have fun with it. If you’ve never tried an Atelier game, it’s not a bad place to start. Just don’t expect something revolutionary from a slice of life game about grief, town development, and alchemy.

Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist & The White Guardian features a fun combat engine and many fanservice cameos that long term fans of the series will surely appreciate. However, as a direct sequel to a now defunct mobile game, it can’t quite shake the feeling like it was created just to try and salvage some money from the failed predecessor by reusing models, music and boring randomly generated dungeons. For those die-hard fans of the series like myself, there is definitely fun to be had here but for everyone else, perhaps I could recommend another title in the series instead.

Atelier Resleriana is a nice commemoration for the 25th anniversary of the series, it is however a bit of a step back from what Yumia had to offer, it is not bad, but it puts the future of the series in question.

This is a game that tries a lot but can never commit. Still, it's a fun enough jaunt through a world otherwise lost to a mobile game, with some nostalgic call-backs to other games in the series
