When I'm talking about game mechanics, I'm talking about the RPG looter aspect, combat mechanics, and story progression.

As a RPG looter, the whole skill tree idea that is utilized in many RPG games is embarrassing in Valhalla. Litterally google the skill tree in this game and be amazed on how bad they ruined the RPG aspect of this game. Additionally, the looting aspect is for some reason scaled back in Valhalla compaired to the previous titles. I litterally played for 20+ hours and found one piece of armor.

Combat mechanics for some reason in this title took a whole 5 steps backwards. It's clunky and has way too much going on, in addition; it's just so bad compared to the other games. There's barely any stealth aspects in the game.. seriously. You're forced to find "scrolls" all over the world to unlock special skills that you use in combat, where in Odyssey; you would unlock them by progressively leveling up.

As of the story progression, it''s repetitive and boring. You go spend hours on hours sailing around and riding on your horse looking for places to Raid with your vikings to build your village. Yes, it's cool but it's not cool to do over and over again and then you're forced to do so to move forward in the story. There's no stealth involved when it comes to doing the raids either.. which defeats the whole Assassin Creed aspect.

The only thing that made the game worth playing was the world in which you play in. It's a pretty, detailed world; I like how the snow would leave tracks when you treked through it. It was definitely nowehre near Red Dead Remdemption 2 however. I have no idea what the developers where thinking with this game this time around. Everything they did in Origins and Odyssey progressive got better with each title and then we come to Valhalla and they litterally ruined it. I would definitely pass up on this game and I'm quite let down with this title that I uninstalled halfway through.

It's not greatest game of all time, it's not best AC either, but it's not a bad game. Far from it. This is possibly LAST real AC game, so i'm not sure why anyone would even complain about it. Either play it and enjoy the last part in this series or then don't play it. It is what it is. But what it is- big beautiful open world, good graphics, very good voice acting (from male main character, female was meh), historical locations and so on. So yea i don't get the whining, because Ubisoft wont make anything better anyway anymore. This is the last one. Next one (if it ever comes out) will be possibly some live service nonsense, basically mobile game. Expand

However, it does feel like it's way too big for its own good. Especially the Asgard part feels like such an unnecessary arc, and completely breaks the game's flow.

I honestly can't help but feel like mystical stuff should be left outside of the AC game, and if they really want to make a game with mystical things, gods and powers, it should be a completely separate game, otherwise, it just breaks the flow, plot immersion, etc.

I'm a Assassin's Creed fan. I've been playing since AC1. I played 1-3 then took a break for awhile (mostly because I didn't have a console during those years) and picked it back up with AC: Origins. I really like how immersive and detailed these worlds are and are like take a walk through history. Origins I 100%ed. I really like how immersive and detailed these worlds are and are like take a walk through history. Origins I 100%ed. Odyssey I played continuously so much that I reconquered territories because the battlefield combat was so much fun.
So what do I think about Valhalla? Valhalla seems to take every single aspect of every past AC game and shoves it into one game but in a diminished aspect. Then they fill they game with so much bloat it is overwhelming. Examples: your eagle from past games is back as a raven but is completely useless except for finding ONLY iron ore deposits. The ship mechanic from Black Flag and Odyssey is back but with zero combat and acts a giant horse for transporting your raiding crew. The hierarchy hit list is back but is crammed with, I kid you not, 48!!!! targets. Skills trees are back in the form of Skyrim's constellation but with, no joke, over 500 skill nodes! The problem is is that they are mostly just small stat buffs that you need to plow through to get to the occasional actual skill. There are maybe 40 abilities but I've found only 2 that are useful, like the Leap Attack and the Dog attack.
There is some good stuff to find here. The mini games are some of the best I've played recently. All of them are fun and never get boring. The world is still pretty beautiful but the engine is starting to show it's age. On PC the game has crashed more on me than any game I've played on my current rig. Raids are great. It's a blast to storm castles with your viking crew and tear through the opposition.
But the negatives outweigh the positives here. It seems that Ubisoft concentrated on quantity over quality. The map is huge with little POIs all over the place. But 90% are simple treasure chests with the same repetitive loot of iron, leathers and/or goods. To get to these chests you usually have a mini puzzle that involves finding your way past a barred or locked door. I think it would be more rewarding to have fewer puzzles that are longer/more difficult but with greater and more special rewards.
Here's the list of krap that has been crammed into this game Village building, hunting, fishing, raiding, hit lists, assassin missions, Asgard storyline, mini-games, and I'm sure there's lots I'm forgetting. A lot of stuff with very little of it interesting.
TLDR: It's just too much. I'm at power level 200 with half of the map unlocked and I feel like the game isn't showing me anything new at this point.
Now I want to address the obvious campaign by Ubisoft to boost their user score with hundreds of 10 ratings. Accounts that only review Valhalla... on all platforms with the same written review. When I read the negative reviews by real players they all state some flaw that I've seen in the game, which is a way I can tell it's a real review. Review bombing by corporations is disgusting. Just make a better game and the reviews take care of themselves.

My favourite Assassin's Creed game since Black Flag. A fun take on Norse mythology and Viking history. Closest AC has made it to Witcher 3 honestly. But apart from that, the game nails the setting. Eivor is a fantastic character, especially the male voice actor. His story with Sigurd was an exciting one, and the world really pulled me in. I couldn't finish fully Odyssey, but here I managed to 100% while still being invested in the world. I think the element of a homestead was great, its fun to keep returning to such a central location. Hopefully this element stays. Next to that, the music was outstanding. The man who sings most of these songs is called Einar Selvik and he has a band Wardruna that is very old-norse inspired. I have been listening to his albums on repeat now for a good time, and its all thanks to AC Valhalla. Very satisfying conclusion, and I am looking forwards for the next one! Expand

I could for instance not play in 1440p on lowest without dipping below 60 fps. Now i have a 3090, and i can finally not only have memory enough to not play on lowest, but also performance needed to be anywhere with at least 60 fps.

Combat: The combat however doesn't entirely feel right. It has too much emphasis on open and large combats. Assassins Creed franchise is more about subtly assassinations in the shadows, but this game opens up to full raids. which is what occurred during the Viking raids.

Theme of the game: The game also isn't about an assassin, but Eivor, a Viking that meets an assassin and shares a common cause, so they work together, and Eivor does an assassin's work.

Theme of the story: The game is quite based around drama, and for me at least, i have not been able to come more than 50% story wise. But that doesn't mean it's bad by any means. Just less appealing for us who doesn't like over the top drama

The gear: This is the part that truly burned me out on open world games for a good while. There's way too much artificial inflation of how long it takes to gear properly up, with several micro materials needed to upgrade a gear piece at least once. So i cheated my way to get "infinite" resources to max out every gear.

So overall, i either think Ubisoft needs to make a choice and either have Assassins Creed split it's game up to 2 parts. One which focuses on assassins, and a second franchise that takes over where Valhalla started. Be a history telling game. And perhaps have the split series still relevant to each other, where you play as whoever future character will be involved and collaborating with the assassins, and the main franchise that focuses on the proper descendants of the ISU, Eivor might have been a reincarnation, but focus more of the assassins creed itself with direct descendants of the ISU for the main characters to delve much deeper into the history/prophecy of the ISU.

So overall score is not good, but not bad either. It has great entertainment value, but falls short of it's premise, combat to some extent, the way too much microgrid and replayability.

The textures in this game look mostly the same as Odyssey. Their is slight improvements to the character modals and of course some aspects do look nicer. But the textures overall haven't improved much at all.
I feel like way to much remains unchanged and that isn't a good thing when spending ÂŁ60 on a new game. Ubisoft need to stop over working their devs and give them more time to give us a mind blowing experience when we buy a new AC game. I don't wanna pick up a new title and be able to compare them side by side seeing what's new and what isn't. When you compare the original AC games apart its like night and day but now comparing Odyssey to Valhalla is like 12pm to 3pm.

The horse riding in this game feels like something I would have expected 10 years ago. Even the 1st Red Dead Redemption game had better horse riding. The horses feel like they are imported from a car game and then a horse texture has been applied.
Certain textures in the game have a really low resolution and then others look amazing? Like the pin on character modals, Snow, smoke, horses... They all look out of place.

The map in this game makes Odyssey look like a complete planet. Its tiny. At 1st I thought I was just on the tutorial map. Nope that is the map. Like I said if you give the developers more time then they would be able to give us more content. Maps are supposed to get bigger not 1 third of the size. Well if the map is smaller then it must be packed full of content right? WRONG! Some things in this game just felt long and dragged out and didn't drive anything forward. Just unnecessary filler content that felt like just another thing to do and I just wanted to skip over it.

The monetization in this game sucks as well. I feel like Ubisoft are just creaming the series at this point. You can basically buy everything in this game for cash including weapons and XP. When I see that in a game I know not to expect much from it. That's when they no longer care about the games integrity and they are squeezing every last drop out of it and it really shows in the gameplay.
Randomly when I was playing the game, after the tutorial I was given loads of OP items out of no where? I think its cos I was playing the Ubisoft+ version but still things like this ruin the game as its not the way its supposed to be played.

Ubisoft just overall aren't the best place to get games from. I try not to be bias with the stuff I have read the company online. With all their good games they end up killing them with monetization and over saturating the market by releasing a new one every 5 minutes.

I am not saying this game is terrible thou. It just gets ruined by the publisher rinsing it for easy money. The story is overall quite good. Some of the side objectives are fun, like this dice game for example. The combat overall is fluent although unchanged from the previous game, although more healing supplies would be nice. At times I was running round like an idiot looking for health items. I believe this game would have lived up to expectations if it was given more time and wasn't ruined with buyable weapons, armor and XP. I hope Ubisoft gets brought out by a better company.

Odyssey has zero parkour (Valhalla has way more, in comparison at least). Over half of AC 3 map was just forests. There have been so many different kind of locations in AC series over past 10 years, yet some people are acting like Valhalla is first Assassin's Creed ever to have huge map, or have forest areas or whatever else these haters will find issue with.

Truth is Valhalla does parkour better than both Odyssey and Origins. Has better combination of huge forests and Cities, than AC 3. New York was absolutely pathetic in AC 3, in Valhalla you can climb and parkour way more in London + forest areas/mountains are so much better and have more variation than AC 3. Valhalla does so many similar things, that previous games have done and many of them better than last few games, yet somehow now this series is dying? Get out of here with that nonsense. I shouldn't even mention that it's selling better than Origins or Odyssey, but i will, will mention that just to make these haters even angrier.

Either way, from now on I REFUSE to consider these Valhalla haters as an actual Assassin's Creed fans, they simply aren't. So basically whenever i meet someone who claims to like AC series, my first question will always be - DO YOU LIKE VALHALLA and if the answer is NO, then i will just walk away. I refuse to interact with these losers for rest of my life. I'm just done!

These haters seem to be combination of people who actually never even cared for this series and those who only care about AC 1. Either way Black Flag is great, Unity is great, Syndicate is great, Origins is great and Valhalla is great. I don't even care, if Odyssey exists, it's just meaningless grind fest and AC 3 is just awful.

This game has incredible atmosphere and music. I literally spent over 30 minutes just climbing the walls of London and enjoying the sunset. There are many incredible looking locations in this game. If you go into walking mode, some of the best music pieces of AC series history, start playing.

I have seen that some are trying to point out, that this game is empty, that's not true at all.

I have seen that some are trying to point out, that this game is empty, that's not true at all. It has just enough things to explore, but some of the empty areas are very much intentional. Red Dead Redemption 2 was exactly the same way. There are areas that have interesting stuff and then there are areas of just nature, beaches, forests etc. After all it's trying to be realistic presentation of 800s Norway and England. It would be awful, if behind every corner was some monster to fight with or gang of soldiers. That's one of the reasons why Odyssey failed, it had too much unnecessary content and thankfully Valhalla fixes that mistake.

Story in this game isn't sadly strongest, but it's not bad either. Just somewhere in between. Some missions are very fun, some are very basic and even boring. For example i was way more interested in Black Flag's story. But to look at this game as a complete package, it's still very nice and overall game design/open world design is way better than last two entries.

I have no idea where AC is going next or what's happening with this series, but if Valhalla happens to be last decent AC, then at least this series ended on positive note.

I've played the game on full ultra at 1440p, 120 percent resolution, and it's full of bugs.
    Ryzen 3900x Rtx 3080
The game crashed, froze, music stuck, me being stuck on a mission, me being literally stuck. The characters in my story are teleporting. Except for the crashes, they were all minor concerns for me. I'm enjoying the game, but the story, writing, and dialogues are all

I'm enjoying the game, but the story, writing, and dialogues are all mediocre. There's no real goal, nothing to propel you forward, and you're basically doing the **** for other people over and over again.
The gameplay is enjoyable, but not exceptional, and this is not an AC. It's attempting to link it to the franchise, but it's simply not possible; the parkour is so constrained that 90% of what you could do in unity is lost here.

Imagine being on a wall, looking behind you, and wanting to leap from the wall to another ledge, which is something you can do in every previous game, but you can't do it here. It's quite frustrating.
The hidden blade is practically useless; there is no incentive to go stealth other than to waste time. Eivor isn't even a member of the creed.

There are 5 songs on the boat; I couldn't find anyway to find find or unlock more; imagine sailing for 50 hours with the same 5 songs or just the sound of the water.

Eivor isn't really engaging or charismatic. He serves no actual function other than to serve as a slave to everyone.

Upgrades and all of the weapons' stats and runes seem pointless; all you need is XP and skills to get genuine power.

    So many micro-transactions my god.

This game is so simple, merely reaching the required strength level allows you to demolish anything... To find any challenges, I had to play in a higher power level zone.

This game is empty, no loot drop nothing, and I've discovered 5 weapons in 35 hours.

Technically, the game looks decent, but not great, and visually, it's just plain uninteresting. I'm using HDR, and I'm not sure if the game is bugged, but the colors are occasionally very flat.

Since Unity, I haven't really like any ac, but this one was quite interesting. I adore the Vikings, their history, mythology, and gods, but I doubt I would have played as long if I hadn't already learned about and enjoyed the period. I would have definitely stopped after 5 hours.

I'd like to talk about how this game handles gods, but it would be a major spoiler, and I'm not a fan.

If you're a long-time fan of AC, you'll probably dislike it, or if you do, it won't be the greatest for you.

If you like the new style of ac and odyssey, you'll probably enjoy this one as well. There's less grinding and a level cap, which is a plus.

This game tries to accomplish a lot of things, but it doesn't do any of them better than any other game. It's just okay, so I'll give it a 5.

So, while the games is better than Odyssey, being better than awful does not make you good. I've played every single Assassin's Creed game, and each one has done something that has stayed with me. The music, gameplay, story, writing, and so on. After 25 hours, Valhalla had done nothing to amaze me, no times where I stayed and thought, 'Wow, this is fantastic.'

It doesn't do anything differently from any other action game. And it certainly does not outperform the most well-known RPG on the market.

It's a shame because Valhalla has so much potential, and we all know that ubisoft can achieve greatness and has done so in the past.

But it appears like Ubisoft is simply not trying; they're settling for good enough. They're overly concentrated on developing as many games and microtransactions as possible in order to generate as much money as possible... They're on the wrong track, and I don't want to see the gaming business follow suit.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla is a great-looking open-world game with impressive landscapes and cinematography. However, the checklist collectible open-world still needs some work to feel truly engaging, and combat is too tedious and too frequent to be compelling. As a lapsed fan of Assassin's Creed trying to see if I can click with the series once again, Valhalla didn't quite hook me as I was hoping it would.

Assassins Creed Valhalla is a lot of fun and easy to sink dozens of hours into. It is the best entry in the more recent trilogy and genuinely elevates the gameplay mechanics. Content could be considered somewhat bloated still, but it is diverse enough and the setting and story is solid most of the way through.

Sneaking is fun, fighting is fun, walking through the great outdoors is so much fun. Sightseeing too! Valhalla is free minded and could be innovative, but lacks skills to persuade its players about that. [Issue#308]
