How it runs: 2/2 runs great with minimal bugs and hassles.

Total: 6/10. -2 for having the worst gameplay design in the entire assassin's creed series.

Gameplay problems: it has one of the most restrictive mechanic in an AC game, you can't jump when you want. You can only jump when there is somewhere to land. What this does is: you can't jump to your death. You can't make a dangerous jump to trade in your health for some distance or save time. You can't jump off most roofs. A game that doesn't allow you to fail is just a bad game.

It has one of the worst parkor in the series. Running is very slow and flows poorly. In addition, the controls are very unintuitive, alot of time you have to make several attempts to perform a simple maneuver like drop down the ledge or climb up that waist high ledge.

It has one of the worst combat in the series, you repeatedly press one button and occasionally press the counter button when you see an enemy hp bar flash yellow. The counter window is HUGE, as long as the counter button is pressed once during the yellow flash, no matter what other buttons you press after or anything else you do, you'll still counter.

And that is one of the biggest problem in the game: the game play, AC 3 had one of the worst story in the series but it was still fun because of the gameplay. Syndicate takes all the progress and lessons learn from previous series and unlearn them all.

It will give you one of the most restrictive feeling you ever had in a sandbox game, do NOT buy this game.

Assassin's Creed: Syndicate is the ninth installment in the popular stealth action adventure series Assassin's Creed. Given that prior to this game, there were already eight major episodes in the AC series and the settings of Victorian London had indeed intrigued me, I was quite confident about what to expect from this game. But from the very start of the game I have been confronted with some changes that I could not have anticipated. But more about that later. As always I want to start on a positive note. One thing that did not surprise me was the quality of the infrastructure of London. The attention for detail is very good, and while it is not entirely historically accurate, it is quite close. I came to expect nothing less from an AC game and I was not let down in this regard. Also the controls seemed a little better, little less console like, with nice touches, like a designated button to enter a window. Sadly this is about it as far as my positives go. The first big change is that this time you play as two characters, assassin siblings. It was an interesting choice, I even somewhat liked it, but it had a couple of flaws in my eyes. First of all, the relationship between the two siblings is not very well written and feels a bit awkward and forced. Second flaw is that while it was suggested that the two characters have a different approach to carrying out their missions, in the end (specially when fully talented) they actually feel pretty much the same and switching between them is pretty much down to your personal preference. The second big change concerns the combat. Not the combat system as such, but rather the feel of the combat. Instead of the somewhat slow paced sword fighting combat of the previous installments, we have this very fast paced knife stabbing frenzy. It looks almost ridiculous, stabbing an already dead man over and over like a maniac. And speaking of knifes, there are no knifes in fact, just these ridiculous curved kukri, cane swords and brass knuckles. All these changes were very obviously done just for the sake of change, which is something that rarely works. A new addition to the series, horse drawn carriages, look pretty cool, but the driving is awfully arcade. AC games never were, not were meant to be, really challenging for experienced PC gamers. But this time, the difficulty is lowered by another level or two and frankly the game is just too easy. The legendary useless Ubisoft collectables are maybe a little bit more entertaining this time (beer bottles, pressed flowers). Microtransactions are back and more disgusting than ever before. I am already used to seeing all these short overpriced story DLCs and ridiculous 10 bucks horse armor kind of deals, but this time that is not all. We have the in-game Helix points currency, which can be purchased for real life dollars and is used to buy, among other things, talents. This is the cancer of gaming. And finally what can I say about the SJW in this game? It is ever-present. This time they updated their SJW loading screen, which says that "this game was designed, developed and produced by a multicultural team of various beliefs, sexual orientations and gender identities". At it shows! We have female gangsters, a little girl who runs a gang, the Ned Wynert character (WTF is that), we are helping poor Indian nobles to defeat the bad, bad imperialist, the in-game database is clearly written by a progressive proletarian, in a main quest we can see a wealthy businessman kick a beggar just because, we have an entire side quest chain dedicated to helping Karl Marx, who is portrayed as strictly non-violent caring humanitarian, the character of Queen Victoria is an outright mockery and on top of all that you get the end-game kiss. It was totally immersion breaking for me.

Assassin's Creed: Syndicate brings many changes to the series, most of which were not needed at all and at the same time, the aspects of the game that needed an overhaul the most, like the stale predictable story and repetitive gameplay were left mostly untouched. Final Verdict: 42%

When I look at Unity now and Syndicate.. I can tell only one thing about this game: HUGE step backwards.
Everything was (Literally) downgraded and optimization is still bad.

Graphics - Downgraded, Despite running this game on High settings (No Gameworks which slaughter FPS even on GTX Titan) it looks far worse than Unity or any other AAA game that came out in previous years, hell even dated Crysis 1 which is 8+ years old looks far better than Syndicate maxed out on PC.

I see this only this way; Ubisoft desperately tried to pump as much performance as possible at a cost of the graphics which resulted in; Terrible distant textures, terrible render distance, terrible NPC models.

Here are example how bad this game looks on High settings with FXAA:

    Example 1: http://i.imgur.com/rpmcsL1.jpg
    Example 2: http://i.imgur.com/IKSlPof.jpg
Example 3: http://i.imgur.com/KJDNkDM.jpg (Notice: NPC's in front on the left side, closest carriage textures, street textures right in front of the carriage)

The best part of this? Those "High" textures require 4GB Vram according to Ubisoft.

    NPC Density - Downgraded.

Open World Enviroment - Downgraded, One thing I loved in Unity was the freedom to move between one buildings interior to another, in Syndicate almost all of this is gone.

Character customization - This part of the game was also heavily downgraded, it doesn't even have 50% of customization content that Unity had.

OPTIMIZATION - It's way better than Unity and a lot less buggy than Unity (In around 10 hours in-game time I only had 2 minor bugs that fixed themselves almost instantly) but this game still leaves a lot to desire.
Despite being heavily downgraded prior to Unity in order to run better, IT DOES NOT.
FPS drops are still present here and there (Especially in cutscenes where they tend to drop to 22-29 FPS for no particular reason) riding a carriage at very high speed is the worst idea you could possibly get; game tends to do not load another part of map fast enough which results in 1-2s freezes, FPS drops when sitting on top of moving train.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I simply can not understand how some people can give Unity an abyssmal rating and rate this game with a high score.
Yes, Unity had a bad launch and it needs a decent PC, but when I started playing it (mid last year), it worked amazingly well, and I experienced a grand total of two (!) bugs in that game.

Now, behold Syndicate. I can not even begin to describe how much this one disappointed me, and how much it is NOT fun to play. Let's go through the bad parts, k?

    - Horribly cliche and uninteresting characters. The same tired old siblings conflict, one being the chaotic guy, the other the more moralistic and straight one. Jacob is a bad attempt at combining Hugh Jackman in the Holmes-movies and Johnny Depp - detached, overconfident, a bit goofy, wisecraking, not fazed by anything. Dull, same as his conflict with Evie, which is just cliche after cliche (not to mention that the fact their FATHER IS DEAD" is mentioned about 8 billion times, lest you forget.

    - Bugs. OMG the bugs. Getting stuck, crashes, stuff like: Am supposed to kidnap a guy and chase him in his carriage. I destroy his carriage, he gets flung out and lands on the roof of a cabin about 7 feet off the ground. I climb up, pick up his corpse, and...can't walk or jump off the roof, or drop his body off the roof. Suddenly, I am 600 feet in the air, falling to the ground, without dieing, but have to replay the whole mission.
Or... if you fight on a slanted roof, the thugs can't hit you. So you can simply take them out without ever being hit.

    - The combat is where this game totally sucks. Totally. This is the WORST combat in any of the AC games, and I have finished them all. Spammy, beating guys with a stick over and over and over (yeah, how realistic). Suddenly, they hit you back with NO chance to block. So no matter how well you play and fight, they lash out and you get hurt. Fighting more than 2 enemies max at one time- forget it, you are dead. See, I love AC, I have beaten them all, and even though most AC games didn't have perfect combat, eventually you could master it and beat even larger groups of enemies. Here? Forget about it.
On top of it, at first you can only possess 2 health potions. Good luck with groups. Most frustrating, dull, repetitive, unimaginative combat I ever saw in an AC game. Horrible.

    - Parcour. It sucks. It's slow. They took some things from Unity (climb up and down with two different buttons), but it feels liek it takes forever to cross small distances. You get stuck a lot too, and it almost feels as random as in "I didnt mean to DO that!" as some of the earliest ACs. Rogue, Unity, they did this so much better.
The rope-gun might sound fun on paper, but its not dynamic at all, feels slow and clunky, and doesn't fit the period the game is set in.

    - Hardly any atmosphere. Everything looks bland, and there is no vibe to the city at all. Yeah, you will see the famous sights of London, but apart from, say, Big Ben and Buckingham Palace, it's just dull. Unity had so much atmosphere, with huge amounts of NPCs on the street and this sinister, mysterious vibe to Paris. Here? Dull.

    - The story is so uninteresting, it's hard to believe.

    - Even though it's not as bad as in Unity, there is the same old Ubisoft-stuff with the map.. unlock an area, and there you go, 800 side activities no one cares about. Pick up pressed flowers, visit famous places, pick up some helix items. Yawn. Unity had too much of that, I admit, but even here, it's way too much.

    - There are like 4 different kind of enemy thugs. And it's so obvious. It's like your enemies have a factory where they cloned 4 guys. It's totally immersion-killing, unimaginative and tiring.

    - The new level system sucks, same as the skill trees. And yay, we can upgrade our gang members! /sarcasm. I find this so disappointing... it was fun to hire assassins in Brotherhood and Revelations, calling them into combat, and they'd appear, fight and disappear like assassins. Here, you hire some brainless thugs to fight for you. If this is supposed to be innovative, I'll pass.

    - The music is terribly uninteresting and not memorable at all.

    - The train HQ adds NOTHING

What ruins the game most to me is
    a) The horrible spammy combat. It never is fun, where you feel great because you take out a whole group of mobs if you play well. It's frustrating, often unfair and totally un-assassin-like IMO. You level p and earn skills, yet you never feel stronger or more powerful. I am not talking about god-mode or something, I just loved how in older AC games, you'd get more skills and get stronger, while here, it stays frustrating.
    b) The horrible characters and story. Jacob is a cliche goofy jerk, and I find him MUCH less interesting than even the more critizised characters such as Arno or Connor.

It's good they are taking a break with the franchise, and hope they bring it back with something fresh and imaginative. This is just phoned in repetive junk, sorry

It's always the same old mechanics, the same follow the guy and kill it, no innovation. This is a shame. Assassin's Creed Syndicate is a misstep and it shows how the series has fallen into disgrace.

if you like awful game design and having your hand held through the entire game, this is the game for you. No way to turn off annoying "Go Here" indicators, no thought at all demanded from the player, just press X to AWESOME! Whoever designed the user interface should be put to death.

Awful game and the paid (or just idiotic) reviewers are the worst. Last AC game I will play, nothing

The Good: The gameplay in AC:S is significantly improved over its recent predecessor games. The developers have managed to keep the overall feel of the Assassin's Creed series while simultaneously adding enough new gameplay features to keep the game fun. I found combat in this game, for example, to be pretty enjoyable. The voice acting is decent and the graphics were good.

The Bad: Everything else about the game is pretty bad. Although it performs out of the box better than AC:U did, it's still pretty choppy on high settings, even on high end computers. Moreover, the game is buggy (crashes or locks up frequently) and the controls are still garbage. The storyline is mediocre and the characters aren't well developed.

The Really Bad: What I find most obnoxious about this game and what's probably permanently driven me away from the series is the way the developers push their identity politics in your face at every turn and in the most ham-fisted of ways. For instance, although the previous startup disclaimer was more than adequately inclusive, the game's designers inexplicably modified it to now include "sexual orientations" and "gender identities" while removing the previous acknowledgement of their "various religious faiths." The inclusion of an openly transgender character in Victorian England of all places was equally laughable, and one character's delivery of a snarky line in which she demands the right to vote was cringeworthy. Overall, this comes across as a game that was designed by a bunch of delusional Tumblr users who don't have any idea what the loyal fanbase of the game really wants and honestly doesn't care either way. The whole mess comes across is an obvious attempt to win over the vocal minority of SJWs at the expense of those of us who just want to enjoy our games without getting drawn into annoying political debates.

For all that I'm down on Assassin's Creed as a whole, Syndicate is at least one of the better entries in the series. And there is admittedly a certain charm to familiarity—a ritualistic quality, as every year I load up the latest entry and proceed through its bevy of re-skinned content. “Hello, old friend. Nice to see you again. My, you haven't changed a bit."...But Assassin's Creed has long since been surpassed by its imitators, from Mad Max to Arkham City to Shadow of Mordor to Sunset Overdrive to Tomb Raider. What they lack in recreating a period of history, they make up for by offering something a modicum different.

The aging Assassin’s Creed franchise begs to be retooled and refreshed, and the paint-by-the-numbers Syndicate is yet more proof of that.

In the end, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate is a far more competent entry than the much maligned Unity, but it does not entirely restore faith in the aging franchise.
