Tanking performance to "protect" a game from being cracked is inexcusable. I will change my review after Ubisoft have decided to take out Denuvo and allow the game to be played to its fullest potential.

Beautiful game, but it doesn’t feel like an assassins creed game. I may be a bit of a fanboy, but I just miss the subtlety of the first few entries. The game feels too grindy and the story isn’t interesting enough for me to want to follow. With any story, I feel it’s easier to follow when you know how a character feels through the story, and Bayek had hardly any character, so it was hard for me to stay engaged in the story. I feel Unity, although really buggy and in dire need of a lot of polishing, was a step in the right direction. I don’t like being FORCED into combat and feel open combat should be a punishment for getting caught while in stealth. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First, some of the negatives.

If you have played the first 10 hours of Assassin's Creed: Origins, then you have played the whole game. The combat is fun for a little while, but pretty much all the non boss enemies you will encounter are seen in that 10 hours. The main story plus doing side quests and exploring took 35-40 hours, so the repetitiveness gets a bit grueling. The main character is likable, but terribly gullible. He is constantly manipulated by his wife, who repeatedly coaxes him into carrying out her bad decisions as well as becoming a mass murderer, by playing on the loss of their son. The game then forces you to play as her, but she has the same skill set as the main character except not as good. Worse versions of all the main characters abilities, worse weapons an armour, etc. She's mean to everyone. She complains all the time. Essentially, she is the complete opposite of the main character except for his bad quality, being extremely gullible. I know they were going for strong female character here, but they created the opposite. Whoops

    Positives

The environments in this game are beautiful and capture Egypt really well. The animations look great. They kind of adopted the Breath of the Wild climb anything mentality in this iteration. Old games required certain handhold set pieces. This gives a lot more freedom trying to navigate the world as well as infiltrate a stronghold. The fighting, for the most part, feels alright. The different weapon mods are neat. Game-play in general all feels really solid. The best part of most Assassin's Creed games for me ends up not being the games themselves, but the history they are based off of. This game is no different. Found myself looking up all sorts of Egyptian history and geography.

Like most of these AC games, I wish the story was more gripping. If this were a movie story, it would give a 2 or so out of 10. Luckily, it is a video game :)

I've enjoyed the AC series, iteration I - IV (black flag) and the main attraction of it was that it continued the stealth gameplay that the *original* Splinter cell game established, but which the latter series for some reason abandoned in its sequels. AC Origins however does away with the stealth focus, and a number of other things which made the previous titles fun to play. To me the game was a major disappointment. Where the former four installments had interesting stories to tell, characters you had some emotional attachment to, skills that manifested naturally as part of the story, Origins has none of that.

In Origins you are a clumsy social worker with "sword", who flails unsuccessfully his weapon unless you continuously spend hours doing tedious busy-work to get a [experience] counter to increase. This means the game *forces* you to do tedious and repetitive busy-work even if all you want is to play the main story-line.

    Gameplay:
The above paragraph says it all. The gameplay has regressed on all fronts except graphics and map size. Where the previous titles allowed you to focus on *what* you wanted to do, Origins have you constantly focus on *how*. This may appeal to some players, but it did not to me. The witcher struck a fine balance between player agency during combat and still being "an awesome hero". Origins has rougher control and response which makes fights imprecise and a bit of a crap shoot. This wouldn't have been so bad if the game didn't at the same time do away with most of the stealth which has been the hallmark of the franchise. In this combat oriented title these rough controls really got on my nerves.

    Protagonist:
The main character is as wooden and uninteresting as a twig. Easily the least interesting character in the entire AC franchise so far. He has a wife however which has a lot more personality, seems involved in a much more interesting setting and plots. For example being an instrument to Cleopatra taking power, and when playing the game I felt that it would have been much better to have *her* cast as the lead.

    Story:
It doesn't matter since most aspects of the game seems so detached from it. No interesting developments happening related to it, only a few lackluster recall cut-scenes which have no bearing on the progression of the game. It's a classic revenge setting. A family member got killed and off you go into the world.

    Side quests:
The accomplishment of providing interesting and engaging side quests which the witcher game brought about two years ago has clearly been noted by Ubisoft. In Origins the company tried to tackle their number one complaint across their titles; forcing people through tedious fetch-quests. Unfortunately they did not study the inspirational title hard enough. Ubi observed some of the ingredients which made witcher side quests appreciated by the public, but failed entirely at putting those ingredients together, into something which resulted in entertainment. Instead what Origins offers side-quest-wise are still the same boring fetch-quests that have plagued the company's titles for years. The only difference to previous games is that this time they have you follow (literally run / ride behind) some uninteresting NPC, that you'll never meet again, for minutes, listening to pointless conversation, and *then* applies their old formula; pick up an item/kill a person or animal. There's absolutely no connection to the story, making these exercises entirely mind-numbingly boring and pointless.

    Technical:
Ran OK on a Windows 7 machine with Intel i7 4770 CPU, 32GB RAM and GTX 1080 with frame rates between 40-60 FPS. No crashes that I can recall.

    Conclusion:
This is the first AC game which I will not complete. I've invested 40 hours into it and can stand it no more.
When I feel like playing a stealth game right now, I see two titles on my desktop. Wolfenstein NC and Origins. Wolfenstein gives me more satisfying stealth game play, controls, interesting characters and a better story. So if you're looking for some satisfying sneak-killing, then Origins is probably not for you.

The following excellent review echoes my own feelings about the game nearly perfectly. Particularly observations 20-4 in the article's descending order. Chagrins 4-1 I did not agree with or did not suffer:

Side quests are meaningless fetch quest, go there bring that, kill him, steal that, no real story behind them and complexity, there was only one or two that was "cool". Loot system is ok, cool looking armors and weapons. Soundtrack is amazing, Every song enhances the mood in the game. Lipsync is off very often and sometimes I beg for the NPC to stfu already, every minute you hear the same small talks of the NPC's, once I had 3 NPC talking the same text with little delay, it sounded like an echo. Performacne - CPU usage at 100% all the time, frame drops but overall not bad, I was able to run AC on ultra on my 4yr old pc. Is this game worth 60$ + 40$ season pass + micro-transactions? Hell no, but if you wait and get it for maybe 30$ at discount then its a fair price for the experience. Expand

    - now we know why assassins started to cut finger
    - some emotionally envolving quests
    - devs continue on bringing back some good stuff that they removed in Unity and Syndicate

    Cons:
*anti pirate system that eats a 50% more of PC performance.
    - sadly forgettable main quest with self-repeating plot (one more revenge coolstory)
    - "rpg elements", leveling that makes game more repetitive and prolonged but dont add anything fascinating. grindwalls.
    - stealth mechanics almost removed.
    - 2 hidden knifes removed. no awesome kills on the run and other cool animations from the past allowed.
    - no new cool weapons/fighting styles
    - no big items or sets that we would like to collect.
    - combat system, "inspired by" Witcher and Dark Souls. Every cool feature from the 1-4AC removed. Shield gameplay that got boring in DS2 and been removed and laughed at in Bloodborne in 2015, been copied in AC in 2017. Makes gameplay boring and repetitive af, while not bringing anything fascinating. Cool animations of parrying and killing more than 1 enemy - removed. Everything that been lackluster in Wither and DS - blindly copied while AC also add broken "lock-on" on top of it.
    - Only good thing that been added in Unity was new depth in killing main enemies. We have a place with enemy and many ways to make it to them. In Syndicate this been brought even further with awesome context kills. Now everything is removed.
    - less realism with flying numbers and stabs with giant swords that only make character to move backwards a little bit and say "ooh"
    - bad new controls. Hidden Kill placed on separate button while still only being used in context situations.
    - not an assassins creed game.

I find the plot indecent; initially it was good but then it went too vague, to me it seemed like the dudes went off-budget and cropped a lot from the late parts of the game. I got bored by the last few missions and wanted to finish & remove the game quickly.

Combat is so much fun and obviously better than the prev AC games, but again a wrong move for an AC game. Who needed it?

Stealth is a miss. Guards are much more responsive which is great, the AI is decent; but where the heck are crowd kills or in general, the disguise? Combat is given more importance in the game. Again, wrong move.

Parkour is totally eliminated. I show my mid finger here to the devs.

The modern life parts were unnecessary. Everyone has an Animus these days and especially this dudette can go to everyone's past. Really?

Anyway, all in all this was a decent ARPG game but hell no, by no means, an AC game.

The graphics are excellent, the movement physics and stuff is improved on previous AC titles, but the fighting is simple brawling and the missions and plot are repetitive and boring. At first I was intrigued by levelling up my gear, but that's all done now and I'm barely halfway through the game. It was cool to see the pyramids, and explore some tombs, but just doing essentially just more of the same stuff over and over with no challenge or useful rewards is disheartening (gaining xp to level up is only necessary because the level system is so wonky, attack someone a few levels higher than you and you barely do any damage at all while they can one shot kill you) so gaining xp feels less like a reward and more like a forced grind so you can continue.
Kudos to the graphical design teams and artists, the world is beautiful and it ran smoothly on my pc mostly, but the game itself gets boring and repetitive quickly, and it's just not fun or challenging (yes I could go and fight enemies ten levels above me and slowly wear them down for a challenge, but after putting 300hrs into Nioh, the fighting in this game is abysmally boring and simple). I've seen people say you should use different attack styles to make it interesting, but, why bother? when I can just hack up the enemies, why bother being stealthy? it's not a challenge it's just slower. Why even bother hacking them up when I can just use a magical guided arrow to kiil them one by one? I'll just hack em up anyway, it's quicker...
I can't honestly recommend this game. I was hoping for another black flag, but this isn't it.

Ubisoft just said: OK just put a lot of stupid locations to fill the map with markers which are not interesting to players.

Parts of the game are visually astonishing, especially the underworlds in the second DLC. And they had the right idea about the combat, even though it's still undercooked in Origins and it took Odyssey to perfect it. But relying on side quests instead of activities is a huge downer. They are boring, repetitive and unrewarding. I MUCH more preferred activities of the old AC model.

There are plenty of side quests of wildly varying quality. Many are some of the most boring side quests I've ever done, but I've found some side quests which have very interesting stories and characters. I'm hesitant to do the side quests since I don't know if I'm in for another slog or an actually interesting experience.

I also have mixed feelings about the story. Without spoiling anything, all I can say is that you can find interesting stuff in the story, but it is definitely not a strong point. I found a lot of the story to be quite boring, only sporadically keeping my attention.

It might seem strange that I love Odyssey but am on the fence on Origins; but I genuinly believe that there is a huge improvement in Odyssey even though both games seem incredibly similar. Origins suffers from less interesting combat, story and characters, but is still not horrible.

But like other reviews said : The Game is too massive, too large. - i do like games with good content like Witcher 3 (replayed 3x on 100%) but not if its uncreative and stretched.

And every hour I understood that Origins is not a new product, and just one project of Ubisoft in which all mechanics of studio are used. Hunting and interaction with animals - Far Cry, Oryol drone from Watch Dogs, big empty and boring (in comparison with Skyrim and Wild Hunt) the world from Wildlands. Fighting mechanics - For Honor on the minimum requirements. A plot which had to tell about formation of an award? Why, if fans can push nonsense with set of historical persons. Let's give to formation of an award of 30 minutes of a game - same INGENIOUSLY. A game is a degradation of a series. The majority of mechanics or is simplified to a minimum, or in general is removed. The architecture is simplified to a limit. Games are caused by disappointment. Origins - a striking example of the fact that Ubisoft isn't able to release the worthy product looking as NEW any more. But a game has 1 advantage - it is a visual look. It is the best study of the area and a historical setting which I saw in video games. At Ubisoft one of the best designers and artists in the industry. It is a pity that only they also work in studio.
PS. The Russian postscoring - the worst that I listened to. From ears there is blood.

The main story is mediocre at best with a very small number of powerful moments. While the characters certainly are interesting, they go through relatively little development over the course of the story.

Other than that, it's... Assassin's Creed. You sneak around, you kill people, you climb towers, you collect things. The last two things are probably the game's biggest issue. It's just too much. The map is ridiculously big and is chock full of side-activities that are ultimately pointless. Sidequests are neat, but again, are nothing to write home about. Other than that it's your usual collectathon. Go to location, pick things up/kill specific enemies, rinse, repeat. It is beyond me how anyone could think that it is a good idea to develop the game like this. It's overwhelming and exhausting. The only way around this is to entirely focus on the main story which causes me to feel like I'm skipping over content I have paid for.

Really, it's a shame that more linear singleplayer experiences are going the way of the Dodo as far as multi-platform AAA developers are concerned. Most new AAA games are either multiplayer-only/focused or live services or open-world games or a mix of all of those - simply because it keeps people playing and allows for aggressive monetization using microtransactions. Maybe I should stick to indie and A or AA games.

Anyhow. It's not great and it's not bad. If you are on the market for a tedious, repetitive open-world game and you see it on sale for

The game was released in 2017 and bring some significant changes to both story and gameplay. For the first time we leave the chronological sequence of AC games and we are instead thrown into the ancient Egypt in times of Julius Caesar and Cleopatra. And when I say thrown into, I mean thrown into. You get no intro, no explanation, no nothing. The beginning of the game can be pretty confusing. But lets take a step back and first focus on the positives of this games. First and foremost: the graphics looks very nice, it is colorful and vibrant. But pretty graphics is just not enough on its own. I am struggling to name any other positive things about this game. Maybe the star puzzles are a pretty good idea. Of course the historical period would be very interesting and a great setting for an RPG game, but it has been mistreated and reshaped in Origins to a point where you get almost no enjoyment out of it. That is about all the good I can say about this game. Now for the bad: First of all, this game is supposed to show the origins of The Creed. I was hoping for something grandiose, something meaningful, something profound. But all I got was very underwhelming. The main protagonist Bayek, who by the way looks exactly like a terrorist, is on a warpath looking to get revenge for the murder of his son, which happens before the game. He try to tell others and himself that what he is doing is righteous and good, but it is very clear that he is blinded by rage and murders thousands just to undo something that cannot be undone. To me that does not sound like something worth founding a brotherhood for. Furthermore his insufferable bisnatch of a wife Aya is bossing him throughout the game and in the end instead of being with Bayek, she just leaves him for no reason whatsoever. Brilliant. All throughout the game, the story is very black and white, very predictable, the quest design is super repetitive and boring. In the last two AC games, the investigations very pretty fun and even challenging, of course that proved to be too much for the AC players and so this time around you just click few places on the ground and all the deductions are done for you. Next thing I got to mention is the accent, all characters speak English with an Egyptian (or whatever) accent, including bad grammar, which I kept noticing throughout the game. The game is also very prudent (for obvious reason), there is no nudity whatsoever, even your marital sex scene. The game takes obvious hints from the Witcher 3 in some areas (music, certain gameplay mechanics), but sadly it does not get anywhere near the quality of the W3. Oh and two more historical aspects that I were obviously written with a clear agenda. Julius Caesar himself is portrayed as this pathetic coward, who is ruled by his own subordinates and needs to be reprimanded and educated about the role of women in the world. Then he gets murdered by Aya, who apparently orchestrated the whole thing. Wow. And one other thing: there is literary no mention of slavery or slaves throughout the game, despite the fact that all Egypt, Rome and Greece were civilizations, that could not function without slavery as they were. I guess it must have just slipped the writers mind. Microtransaction are present throughout the game as you would expect. The SJW is present, but somehow it did not feel as ridiculous as in the Syndicate. I played on PC and it took me about 55 hours to finish the whole game without DLCs, I did not have any motivation left to play those.

I would not say it was an outright bad game. Certainly not my cup of tee, but I thing more appropriate word would be mediocre. A mediocre game for an mediocre audience. Final Verdict: 50 %

"Men kheper re" and the game says it's Rameses. :) Such flaws got me bored.

The game most of the time is boring. The cutscenes lacked emotion and felt disconnected. You trigger a cutscene, try to concentrate on what's going and then a loading screen! That's not how you handle the transition between gameplay and cutscenes.

I tried to like Bayek since he's ethnic Egyptian but unfortunately he didn't left me any impression. Aya was much more interesting, I wish we had played with her only.

The story and the historical background is really cool tough. The ending was also intense.

Gameplay was meh... The new fighting mechanics are really cool but lacked diversity and felt repetitive. Skill tree is meaningless because you don't feel Bayek is improving.

And the murmurs of Egyptian NPC's are silly. Dialogues don't make sense.

If only the game was much more detailed.. All in all the land of Egypt is amazing to traverse and story is worth seeing.

However, the combat was actually somewhat more enjoyable, for one reason: There was no skill that let you assassinate out of stealth like odyssey. Once you got that, it was just run around in circles and wait for it to recharge before finishing up whatever boss mob you were dealing with.

Good game, but not great. Odyssey is a MUCH improved version of origins. Valhalla is.... a very, very slightly improved version of Origins.

Assassin's Creed Origins is a nice renewal of the AC recipe that we grew to love at first and then got tired of and finally uninterested with.

To me, its biggest flaw was the writing. It's so very cliche and flavourless, teenage-level writing at times. It prevented me from feeling truly involved in the universe, and after 40 hours of dedicated quest-solving (as I usually do), I found myself feeling like I didn't wanna do the side-quests anymore, as they are really all the same and the poor writing and dialogues just fail to compel you to do them. "Go fetch me stuff", "bandits kidnapped my brother", "meet me there and go kill these guys" quests. A tiny handful of them are slightly better and more immersive, but they eventually all lead to killing a bunch of guys.
Also, I think Ubisoft could use a bit more boldness in their writing. Cliche moral how-you-should-think lessons are everywhere. Men and women are exactly equal in every way, thieves are just nice people who want to feed their families, bad guys are selfish xenophobic and/or mysoginistic to the extreme, nice guys are selfless, love everyone with such deep passion and connection... It gets tiresome. Force-feeding eventually only leads to barfing. Just write a story Ubi, and let us think how we want to think. Just this would make dialogues, story, flavour texts,... much better for many of us.
I thought its biggest strength lied in its environments. The game is gorgeous, exploration feels nice just because of it. Rather it is the cities or the nature areas, it's very pretty, the sights are top tier.
    Music is great.
Fights are nice, ask for a bit of learning. Bayek of Siwa, the main character eaten alive and defined by his grief and his desire for vengeance, is charismatic and a good AC character. Although his character is not very "deep", we still feel empathy for him and enjoy playing as him, his voice-actor nailed it too. The stealth/assassin mechanics are still there, still fun, still work just fine.

Overall, and I'm sorry to probably be the millionth guy to make this comparison, I'm sorry to say that despite its strengths, after a game like The Witcher 3, this game feels rather bland. Don't get me wrong, it's still fun, still nice, still badass, but if you expect an immersive world, story, dialogues, quests, this might just not cut it. AC Origins just got a grip on the bar that The Witcher 3 has set for open-world games, but doesn't set itself at the same level, it just... hangs on it, awkwardly at times.

But as I said, fun game still, newcomers to the gaming world or young gamers might love it.

A beautiful game , which is completely different from previous games , I think it is a reboot ! whatever the story is mostly good , but ''villains murders ur child and u re on the way to take revenge"' cliche. story is bit much of overstrechched ! pc optimization is decent but game runs far better on nvidia cards.
    That's it !

It is definitely the best Assassin's Creed game yet, but it still isn't as good as it could be. The game simply forces you to do the side quests to continue in the main story.

    Combat

Combat is mediocre, not very complex, annoying sound effects, annoying slow motion effects, extremely repetetive, limited enemy movesets

The climbing mechanics are quite fun.

This game lacks true emotions, feels like a mainstream Hollywood movie. It was clearly not made with love. It was made with a "good enough" objective.

Cities look very good, but NPCs keep saying the same phrase over and over and most houses you cannot enter. You cannot even open doors. Very annoying and cheap.

I bought it for 13 Euros and that's ok. But please, don't be fooled by the good graphics. This game is unfortunately mediocre. It is not bad, but not good either.

How does it compare to Witcher 3? Maybe it's 50% of it, it is just to boring and repetetive.

How does it compare to Dark Souls 3? Combat is a joke compared to Souls Games. It totally lacks compexity and is always the same button mashing.

Ubisoft, next time you make a smaller open world with a better story, better quests and better combat. Improve your quality!

After all I somehow enjoyed it, but it is quite a lackluster game.

I am just a casual, but the open world, while amazing and a great new take on the AC game-play, I just got bored after exploring the whole map and collecting the amount of collectibles in the game were a tad bit tedious. I loved exploring ancient Egypt, and I loved Bayek and Amulets characters, but it just felt like the same old Templar Vs Assassins plot I have seen before, but the origins of their fight. I wish that the stealth and combat was more refined because I felt like I was just holding buttons, and the weapons were the same, but with level restrictions and typical RPG elements.

I'll give it a 7/10. I liked the new take on Origins game-play and I loved exploring Ancient Egypt as an Assassin, but the plot fell short in some areas for me, then again, I only payed little attention to the AC plot since 4.

After the huge success RPG games have lately made Ubisoft is ready to completely disconnect new AC games from its original game structure and shove a RPG mechanics inside a game that was based on social stealth.

The difficulty of the game is heavily based on your character's level, even when being overleveled you are still matched with damage-sponge enemies. Stealth approach is completely changed, assassinations can no longer kill enemies which is ironic for a game called Assassins Creed. Map is overwhelming and its locations are repeated more than enough with the exception of few camps and tombs that are connected to side quests.

As hinted in the title the story is about the origins of AC, yet there is very little about it and its complete story is in a DLC. The main game is focused more on the main character's journey which is another typical revenge plot but for an AC game his story is actually interesting enough to follow to the very end.

How can your ruin assassinations in an Assassin's creed game?
It has a forgettable plot, and somewhat great characters.

Truth be told, it's an amazing open world with so many layers to it. There isn't a better feeling than climbing the pyramid for the first time. Just seeing the view is worth it.

I would probably really like the game if it didn't have "Assassin's Creed" in the title. Cause that is not what this game is.
They force the assassin side of the story in to the third act, and other than that it has nothing to do with it. It is, as the hundreds of other people has said, a "witcher 3 clone"

This game should have been a lot of fun. But....

The game world is soulless. The main quest is simply terrible - a basic hit list to complete. Some of the side quests are somewhat interesting, but there is little variety. It's basically all about killing scores and scores of people. There is little enemy variety, and strategy & tactics are simple. The game engine is very limited in what it allows you to do, so everything becomes repetitive. There is little item variety, so looting is largely pointless, as is discovery and exploration.

There is this huge open world begging to be filled with content. And the world itself has a lot of variety. But what you can do in this world does not, and large parts of the map are pretty much empty.

Midway through the game I really just wanted it to end, but I played on just in order to finish it and move on to other games.

Tanking performance to "protect" a game from being cracked is inexcusable. I will change my review after Ubisoft have decided to take out Denuvo and allow the game to be played to its fullest potential.

The resurrection of the seemingly exhausted series was successful. Beautiful and enormous Egypt is complemented by the sympathetic hero Bayek and plenty of modifications to the proven formula. [Issue#280]

This killer holiday in Egypt is definitely no boring. On the contrary, it is a pleasant excursion to the times, when the sphinx had a nose, and mysterious killers did not call themselves assassins. You cannot find a nicer version of an Ancient Egypt in any other game, and up to it it’s entertaining. A modest family story affects the whole empire at the end, and you will forgive a handful of bugs to its charismatic heroes, as well as the fact, that you have played the same pattern so many times, just in another scenery.

Ubisoft Montreal managed to make Egypt not only beautiful, but extremely atmospheric. When you’re admiring the city and a mounted patrol rushes past you, you always get that urge to step aside to avoid getting trampled, even though you know you can eviscerate them all in a blink of an eye.
