On the contrary, this game incorporates much more than just running around a city, climbing walls, and performing assassinations. Unlike it's predecessors, the game is actually very open and allows for the player to explore a vast world unseen in the franchise up to this point. To be honest, I had lost much of my faith in the Assassin's Creed franchise due to it's previous lackluster titles, but AC4's Edward Kenway has restored hope for this series. The story itself draws you in and takes for a ride you would never expect. All in all, I would highly recommend this game to a friend, especially if you ever played and liked "Sid Meier's Pirates! 2". Expand

This is were the game flourishes, ship combat is so well refined and not to mention my favorite part is ship boarding, when you attack a ship enough its disabled and you can board it and slaughter its crew, THIS IS SO FUN!

The sound is ok, I found a few times where the sound of a sword hitting an enemy what out of time with the action itself, and the sword sounds are much quieter then what they usually are, the musics pretty good, there are some new animations which give a feel of "A new assassin".

The story seems ok so far, nothing special but walking around in Abstergo Industries is nice because god rays nice colour pallet Nice Place.

I was planning on giving this game a 9.5/10 only because of the screen tearing im getting, I run the game on a gtx 670 and am playing it at optimal settings for my PC and if I enable V Sync that just drops my frame rate harder then the anchors in the game, the reason im giving it a 10 is to offset all the haters, this game is a massive UP for the series, it took a small element from AC3 and made it the sole chemistry for AC4, ships.

    Again, OFF HATERS.

I think most gamers who visit Metacritic have learnt to ignore the typical fools who give ridiculously low scores due to inadequate hardware or pirate versions of the game that either don't work properly or are simply not up to date.

For those that want the typically honest, straight-up review from myself, pull up chair for a simple one.

Combine the "I fancy messing around for a while" freedom of GTA with the beauty and crafting of Far Cry 3 and the cast of Pirates of the Caribbean oh, and add the usual Assassin's Creed and you've got Black Flag.

Up until this point, Assassin's Creed has pretty much been the same old thing; which is not a problem for those of you who, like me, enjoy the games. But, to be honest, after a hour or two of ACIII I'd had enough, the enjoyment I had from the first two games was completely gone. Ubisift must of detected this stale feedback of ACIII and obviously decided to really mix things up, and wow, what a result!

So, you've got your usual Assassin's Creed gameplay, you know, running around towns, killing guards, blah blah blah, and then you've got what is, quite literally, the best depiction of naval adventure and battle that's ever graced a computer. Once you've completed the introductory bits (usual AC sort of stuff) you basically get your own warship and crew and then you choose to do whatever it is you want to do, be it following the game or not.

Sailing, treasure hunting, swimming, diving, harpooning, bar brawls...........and on, and on.....

Assassin's Creed Black Flag simply puts the fun back into AC, fun that left the series after ACII.

Oh, and if you've got a decent rig (GTX 670+) then you're in for a visual masterpiece. The towns look better, the shadows are better, the animation is better, the details are better and the water? Well, it's spectacular, combined with very good time of day lighting and outstanding weather effects. Audio is also extremely good. The PC version (which already far surpasses what the PS4/XBox One can achieve) is also receiving a Physx patch for even more effects.

With an i7@4.2Ghz, GTX 680 and 12GB RAM, I'm running it completely maxed (apart from High Env quality and Low God rays) at 2560x1440 and it runs at a smooth frame rate; granted, not 60fps solid, but a very acceptable and more than playable 40-45fps.

Just make sure to disable VSync in game and run D3DOverrider, forcing VSync and TB.

I don't often give 10/10 for anything in life, but when there's nothing else quite like Black Flag available, it is truly epic.

No doubt Ubisoft seems to have done a very good job in fulfilling customer's request for features in game that was first unveiled in AC3 but was not polished well which was naval warfare. Honestly, when AC3 came out, the naval warfare was one key feature that really attracts me the most but I was a bit disappointed because it only appears as side missions and players don't have much choice to sail to other places and uses it as a mean of transports for exploring. However, AC4 really revamped that whole concept and brought my wish to real. For me, the open sea free-for-exploration with a ship is the best selling point for AC4. Never in my entire life have I seen a game that managed to handle naval warfare very well. It is too awesome. The ability to sail across the sea, stop by islands and explore them seamlessly without any boundaries, engage in epic naval battle and board the ships are the best key features for me. Playing the game somehow kind of reminds me a bit of Pirates of the Caribbean especially during the naval battle. Plus the new engine in the game which allows for spontaneous storms and huge waves to occur really added to the realism and epicness of the game. Seriously I wouldn't mind if the next AC5 continues on the sea exploration concept. In fact, I really hope they would retain naval exploration in the next installment. For anyone that has not played any Assassin's Creed series before, I think this installment is the best way to start with. It's like GTA but in a pirate settings in the caribbeans. Expand

Open world, life on the high seas, taking down fat merchant ships mixed with the familiar Assassin's Creed gameplay with the running and climbing and sneaking. Visually on the PC it looks great and while I can't comment on the keyboard and mouse controls, it plays flawlessly with an Xbox 360 controller. Highly Recommend picking this title up.

This game, however, is brilliant. Brilliant as in a brilliant work it has faults many of the same that plagued the earlier games; Running to chase someone? Let me start climbing a wall you don't want to. Trying a stealth mission? Allow me to make your character do stuff you don't want him to just so you are discovered. The side plot outside the "dream" is hackneyed and uninspiring.

    But.

The main game is the "pirate" game I have been waiting for since excitedly unpacking my ZX81 33 years ago. Sure, the sailing isn't realistic but neither are the land based parts. There are "mini games" that would have constituted a full game 8 years ago from the ship fleet management to the whale/shark hunting.

Naval combat is a joy to play and the missions, varied.

Some missions are too difficult I find the stealth/following simply too hard, but the game has so much else going for it that it doesn't annoy me in the same way as, say, GTA IV did.

So, despite its flaws, I feel it would be churlish to give this game anything less than 10/10.

I bought BF4 shortly before this. The game I keep coming back to is this and I *love* the BF series.

I am enjoying the plot and the acting is, in the main, of a high standard.

I alt tabbed out of the game to write this review so I'm off back now. It does this perfectly too and so far (touch wood) hasn't crashed once.

The graphics are gorgeous on the highest settings and the world never fails to completely immerse you every time you decide to captain the Jackdaw. The ship and ground sections are like playing two different games but they cross-over seamlessly as you can see when boarding another ship. They have added countless things, a very intricate naval system, and the graphics are outstanding! This is exactly what the Assassin's Creed franchise needed to make the game fresh again.

The voice acting is amazing, the graphics are outstanding, and the characters really grow on you. I haven't been as emotionally invested into a video game character as I have become with Edward, since AC2 with young Ezio. Anybody who picks this game up, I can assure will thoroughly enjoy it, and another great thing that Ubisoft did was, instead of making the pirates how most people view them, they made them exactly how they were in the Golden Ages.

What really pisses me off is all of the people who are giving this game negative reviews. I can assure you that not one of the negative reviews is actually about what the game brings to the table, which is WHAT REVIEWS ARE, they are not about you not being able to run the game. People are complaining saying "Oh, this game sucks, nothing to see here, it doesn't even run properly." Wrong, actually these people just have terrible graphics cards and need to stop crying and get their parents to buy them a new PC. I can run this game fully maxed constant 60 fps. Then you have some people who say this game has terrible graphics and rate it with 0. I don't know if these people are delusional, playing on low settings on a 240p monitor, or just feel the need to cry about something because of their terrible childhoods.

To anyone who is contemplating on purchasing this game, it is a must, and I can assure you that as long as you aren't a child, mentally retarded, or like to complain because your upset with your current life status, then you will have some of the most fun you ever will with a game in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is a good game. Combat is good, plenty to do after beating the storyline. There are some bugs, but nothing too gamebreaking. The storyline takes a while to leave the "Pirate doing pirate-y stuff with pirate-y friends" phase, though its still fun and the ending was good. Edward started out rather flat as a character, but grew more complex later. Ship combatAssassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is a good game. Combat is good, plenty to do after beating the storyline. My only complaint is that the framerate an take a hit during some larger boarding procedures such as Man of War and Frigate attacks.

Awesome game but just to let people who prefer being an assassin this is not the game, you get guns and dual swords, not very assassin like he just gets the hidden blade and the hood and the assassin "guild" is a bunch of bush whackin' Mayans with blow darts! BUUUUUUUT if your into destruction and looting then this is a positively BADAHS pirate game, sail the high seas in your mighty vessel, dive for lost treasure, explore a myriad of islands, take on impossible odds with just a few cannons and if your tough enough can tackle the legendary ships! Hoo, intense stuff. Just read the title as Black Flag and forget the Assassin's Creed part and everything will be just peaches and cream......or fire and gold. oh and PS, make sure your computer is tough because even on a mid comp and low graphics the game still lags at times like when you fire your cannons.......which you do.......alot. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Very addicting game. I've been with Assassin's Creed since the first and loved the first two. Brotherhood was a bit too dry for me to actually finish and I didn't bother with Revelations. I couldn't get into ACIII because of its slow story progression and early game restrictions alongside with its unpolished control interface and certain game mechanics (like aiming). What makes this game great compared to the others is its less restrictive exploration which begins very early in the game. Naval travel is pretty good and the ship to ship combat is great (not the best but pretty damn good). I think what makes this game great is due to the fact that it really does not feel like Assassin's Creed, especially when your going around pillaging ships. Not to mention Edward Kenway isn't really an official assassin until close to the end of the game. He's just a pirate doing whatever it takes to make his fortune. There is a lot of repetition and the difficulty is average. The combat is not as brutal as AC3 but it satisfies. Oh and for once, the cinematic trailers released were not misleading unlike AC3 where it had you believe you were going to be in huge battlefields cutting down the British Army's ranks just to reach your target. I recommend this game to AC fans and first timers alike. Expand

Assassin's Creed 3 had many problems, but they did not concern the sea battles: Ubisoft accidentally embodied almost all the dreams of the authors of the domestic "Corsairs", only with the proper luster and scope. The problem is that in the plot campaign to become the captain of the ship it was necessary literally on one and a half missions, but Black Flag is devoted to pirates entirely. The series for the first time rolled back along the time line: the barman Desmond Miles, being in the amazing device "Animus", traveled from the Middle Ages to the American War of Independence, but now the events moved half a century ago, when the Caribbean terrorized bukaniry.
The new hero, thus, became the ancestor of the central characters of Assassin's Creed 3: Edward Kenway - the father of Kheitem Keneway and Grandfather Connor Kenway. And he's a pirate: after serving as a privateer during the recent wars between the metropolitan countries, he surrendered to the sea brigands, which, by the way, upset his wife, quite agreeing to poor farm life. In parallel, the old enemies of the Assassins and the Templars act in the colonies, and Edward accidentally gets involved in their affairs. All these adventures these days are parsed and recorded by the employee of the corporation "Abstergo", which seems to be going to make a family film from the material obtained. Edward - officially not seemingly an assassin, but he acts just like all the members of the brotherhood: he also fights, as he climbs on the roofs and hides in the bushes. All key mechanics of Assassin's Creed have not really been updated since the first part, and Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag in this sense does not change anything. All battles, as well as six years ago, are won by counterattacks, any high constructions are subdued by one button, and everything can still be hidden in the grass, knee-high. The enemies have not become smarter, there are practically no new weapons and techniques, and all land tasks are a collection of primitive instructions from previous issues: catch up, run away, follow and overhear the conversation. Land on Black Flag has absolutely nothing to do. Even the most trifling naval battle - a large-scale show
But, fortunately, you need to go down there only on key plot matters, all the rest of the time you can spend in the open sea. After a couple of hours of play you get your own ship (Edward will call it "Jackdaw") and you can immediately go to rob and kill. The sensations are tremendous: they are trembling with the helm, you are tactilely aware of the gigantic size and power of your brig, every wave and every breath of the wind. Even the most trivial battle is a large-scale show: the vessels are spinning, aiming at each other, exchanging a series of volleys, everything is burning, smokes and explodes. In this context, even outdated mechanics work in a new way: long-bored fights and parkour for the time being carried away again, when you take on board a stranger ship, jump between the masts and fence with the enemy captain. Going to the open sea, you never know exactly what awaits you. You can run into other pirates, you can get into a storm, you can loot a single schooner or track down victims larger, you can buy a diving bell and dive underwater, you can search for treasure or storm fortified forts. Extraction goes for upgrades: if you do not increase the firepower of the Galki, you can easily drown at the first meeting with a small enemy flotilla. Finally, you need to remember the team. After particularly loud clashes, almost half of all sailors may die, and they will have to recruit new ones: rescuing captured gangsters from shootings and gallows, hiring drunkards in taverns, luring captives on their sides or picking random drowning aboard. If the first and third parts of Assassin's Creed claimed a kind of pseudo-historical production, then Assassin's Creed 4, like Assassin's Creed 2 - is rather a motley themed show from a casino in Las Vegas. Everyone walks in bright clothes, big hats are decorated with funny feathers, the killers wear complex systems of belts and belts to take a dozen pistols at once, and if a black beard appears in the frame (and he is by no means the only historical figure , which you will meet), then it will look like it would look in a cartoon. But this is exactly what you expect from the game about treasures, rum, seas and jungles. Black Flag - a game for those who love filibusters rather a sample of "Pirates of the Caribbean"

Black Flag is the Best AC game ever! The way naval battles and sea exploration is integrated into the regular gameplay mechanics with seamless transitions is the best feature is this package.

The golden age of piracy is an interesting period of time to visit and interact with the likes of famous characters of the time like Ben Hornigold, Woods Rogers, Charles Vane, Black beard, and all the historical figures. If we are to rate the AC games based on the historic period, black flag is the least interesting of them all, the 3rd crusade and the American Revolutionary War are way richer and more exciting to explore.

What makes AC4 the best AC game is fun, is the most fun game in the franchise ever. You get to do tons of stuff in this open world and there is polish and details everywhere. Some reviews stated that they didn't like the main missions or the main story but for me, it was exciting: Dropping in the middle of the Templar plot and sabotaging their plans, and finding out about the assassins and the secrets that the Caribbean islands hold was a nice trip.

I always recommend playing older AC games on PC as the console counterparts are way inferior in graphics and performance. This was solved since Valhalla, and I'm pretty sure future AC games like mirage will solid perform on consoles, but older AC games have a brutal difference between PC and consoles.

As of right now i like Black Flag and Valhalla equally. Valhalla obviously has more content and better graphics, but Black Flag was also incredible game in 2013 terms and still holds up both graphically and story wise.

Easily best Assassin's Creed game ever made. I never cared about earlier games, i always knew they existed, but they just didn't interest me. Black Flag changed everything and made finally fan. This huge map full of secrets, pirates history and beautiful graphics for 2013 make it near masterpiece!

Possibly one of the best Assassin's Creed games ever made. Graphics, music, Caribbean atmosphere. One of my favorites.

To me Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag is ultimate Assassin's Creed experience. Specially for a game that came out in 2013, it had insane amount of good content, huge map, interesting story and one of the best video game soundtracks ever.

AC4: Black Flag was first Assassin's Creed game i cared about. Going back in time to 1700's was amazing to say the least. After that i checked out AC 3 and i didn't like it. But AC 4 made me fan and i still play this masterpiece time to time.

    It had anything I wanted.
This is one of the best games I've ever seen.
You can explore the world and enjoy killing enemy's. I played AC 2 & 3 too but this one was better.
    I played on Xbox 360.

Anyway i just wanted to truly thank Ubisoft for every video game they have done and thanks to that made my life so much happier and better in general. Watch Dogs and AC Unity were games that helped me to get over my depression and for that i'm forever thankful for Ubisoft. Thank you. Expand

Overall: Ubisoft really outdid themselves with this one in 2013. Huge beautiful map, so many places and islands to discover and explore. One of the best soundtracks of whole series.
    Ranking: My favorite AC game.

Ironically enough for a game which centers around the concept of genetic ancestry, however, it continually lets itself down by refusing to break away from its own tired and worn-out heritage,

Fans that were bummed out by Assassin’s Creed III will most likely find Black Flag to be a welcoming return to what they love about the series, with a great story, amazingly crafted world and smart additions to the sailing that make it a refreshing part of the Assassin’s Creed formula.

Makes up for the failings of AC3, delivering a fantastic, engaging open world experience. [Jan 2014, p.78]
