For an extra 10 bucks I can't complain too much. Its just simply MORE black flag only your not Kenway and its more focused on slavery than piracy.
If the story had been more driven like the base game or if it had introduced something that was not in the base game already, I would have rated it higher.

This is a standalone DLC for AC Black Flag. The story revolves around Adewale and his quest to free his people from slavery. The blunderbuss is a great gun and blowing away enemies is great fun. The sword is replaced by a machete which makes the kill animation brutal. Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag's DLC, "Freedom Cry," shines primarily due to its fantastic protagonist, Adéwalé. He is a truly remarkable character, adding depth and substance to the expansion. The known assassin gameplay from AC4 is present, obviously, since it is just an expansion, but incorporates some new animations for Adéwalé's. What I personally liked is the lack of ship gameplay.Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag's DLC, "Freedom Cry," shines primarily due to its fantastic protagonist, Adéwalé. It wouldn't fit this expansion.

While the DLC excels in its protagonist and gameplay, other aspects of "Freedom Cry" may not leave a lasting impression. The story may feel somewhat forgettable, lacking the impact and depth seen in other entries of the series.

In conclusion, "Freedom Cry" is a great addition to Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, thanks to its exceptional protagonist and well-integrated gameplay. Adéwalé's character alone makes the DLC worth experiencing, as it brings a unique perspective to the world of pirates and assassins. However, other elements of the DLC, including the story, may not leave a lasting impact. Nevertheless, for fans of the series and those who enjoyed AC4, "Freedom Cry" delivers a rewarding and enjoyable experience.

Barely noticeable differences to Black Flag make Freedom Cry an inessential add-on to Assassin's Creed IV. [April 2014, p.66]

The add-on also gives hope for what's possible when blockbuster-driven creators take risks with material. There are missteps in Freedom Cry, more ethical than mechanical, but it hits as often as it misses. That's undeniably an important step forward.

A self-contained tale about the human catastrophe of slavery is an abrupt turn from the original’s happy-go-lucky plundering style, but the game’s mechanics adapt relatively well.
