It feels like it takes eternities to farm materials for upgrades and that makes it really annoying that you can't fast travel with your inventory (at least we didn't find out how). Also you'll die pretty often which makes you lose all your stuff you collected + the gear you had so at those times you might have to start farming smaller stuff for the 100th time so you can build basic gear and weapons again.

If you don't have a dedicated server then playing together is a mess, you can't move 100 meters away from eachother.

A few of my steam friends have 1000+ hours in this game so it might be fun if you really know what you are doing, but I can't be bothered to find out.

I have never seen a worse game than ARK. Bought it on Epic Games, I couldn't join a freaking game after trying for over 10 hours and reinstalling it several times just to get it running. Don't give idiots like the developers of Ark your money, it would have been better if i burned it. Just made me mad and frustrated, thank you guys for this great experience!

Simply put, this just isn't a fun game. You start off at a location (often, I spawn at the "easiest"), then began to fend for yourself immediately. You may die from a dino attacking you literally upon spawn. Or you may all of a sudden start to hallucinate, then die. You run out of storage in no time. You become dehydrated quicker than anything. I can see how others enjoy the game. ButSimply put, this just isn't a fun game. You start off at a location (often, I spawn at the "easiest"), then began to fend for yourself immediately. I can see how others enjoy the game. But unless you have multiple hours to sink into the beginning (they don't call the start a "berry-picking simulator" for nothing), and have the utmost patience, it simply isn't worth it. There is a bunch of performance issues I ran into as well, including stuttering frames and game crashes. There is no V-Sync option, either, which helps with screen tearing. Honestly, I don't think I could recommend this game to anyone except those looking for a really hardcore survival-type game based in the stone age. Not my cup of tea. Expand

I love the idea and sandbox style that this game employs but absolutely HATE the bugs and design flaws that greatly impact the potential this game has. This game plays good when you are exploring on the surface; I really hate when a dinosaur ambushes and kills you, especially if they stun you for more than a second or tranquilize you so they can eat you. In addition, the cold environments require you to acquire a ridiculous amount of materials that are seldom found in the warm or temperate side in order to craft warm gear, or greatly restrict your movement by crafting a line of torches so you can keep yourself cold instead of freezing. However, these problems can be worked around not just by getting good, but also using the settings provided before starting a game to make a challenge more reasonable.

Where I lose my mind are the caves: All too often, you will enter a cave, only to have a TON of monsters/bugs spawn and kill you without warning. There are way too many monsters in the games, and in the hard caves, they are insanely powerful to the point of god-like status. In addition, they will respawn very quickly the moment you leave the cave, so if you go into the cave, you better do everything you intend to do before you leave or you might as well have never entered. The one thing I REALLY hate about the caves is that monsters can show up out of nowhere through the walls; apparently the developers thought it would be a clever idea to have them spawn behind the walls, but that backfires as both a bad game design and a bug as a few (but not enough) monsters can get stuck behind the walls. It gets even worse as if there is water in the caves, and you jump in, monsters will quickly spawn in front of you and eat you alive by the time you see them and attempt to swim away from them. With the exception of at least one cave, the caves also get ridiculously cold, even if you are in the middle of the jungle; I expect them to be a bit chilly as you go deeper but I find it absurd that you can go from being 80-90 degrees in the jungle to 20 degrees the moment you step into the cave. If you have not adjusted the gameplay settings before the game, you absolutely will need to as the base settings are not playable.

The bosses are absolutely undefeatable on base settings. I will explain later, but if you adjusted the base settings to try and provide some kind of reasonable challenge you will need to adjust them further. The main problem is the bosses not only have insanely high HP, but they also have a hidden timer, and if the timer runs out, its death for everyone against the boss. You may think that's no big deal, but if you die, you lose EVERYTHING and cannot retrieve a single thing. Even the artifacts you used to open the portal are gone and cannot be reused on defeat. There is a feature in-game that allows you to 'save' your character and items by uploading it to the arc, but I cannot get it to work in Single-Player. It would be nice if it worked as it would save me from having to quit the game, make a backup of my character data, then start the game again and hope I don't get killed by the boss. I really wish I could retrieve my items or that the save feature worked properly. For what its worth though, the bosses are definitely more enjoyable than the caves, though not perhaps as much as exploring.

When the duct tape (AKA sandbox settings and console commands) holds, this game is somewhat enjoyable, and is probably way I have so many hours playing it. When it falls apart, its when I hate this game because its such a mess. I think I would enjoy this game a LOT more if I could utilize mods, but for some reason, Epic Games does not have mod support enabled for this game. If you can get this game for $10 or less on steam when it goes on sale, DO IT. Unless you can acquire it cheaper and with mod support from another digital distribution service, I would recommend buying it from Steam for no more than $10. If it is free on another digital distribution service, you can try it without mod support, but it will leave quite a bit to be desired.

    On the downside.
    - Community
Pathology, psychopaths and a lack of any empathy. People on official servers act as if they let go of their brakes and can do anything.
Someone who can spend a few hours or even several dozen in some cases just to bully, stalk and tease someone is not a normal person.
    - It's not a game for a moment or for a solo. To play multi (smalltribes, for example) you need a full team ready to spend the lion's share of your time and it will not be enough.
    - PvE official servers.
You need miracle and luck to find a place to build there, and even if you find a place, it may turn out that a group has blocked access to even metal. I saw whole mountains surrounded by walls so that no one came in, or empty bases where they spawned. Constant greefing and disturbing.
    - PvP official servers.
The habitat of all pathology. Ubiquitous toxicity and hatred towards another person.
    - Bob
One of the proofs of how toxic this community is. Being new to this game, roleplay or just wanting some simple fun, for example, growing a high-level dodo and sending it to Carno is considered streak and everyone must be pros in pvp. I can't understand why others are bothered by the fact that they want to play in their own way and how they don't stick to the set goal.
    - Character transfer
It's a cool mechanic that you can transfer your character to another server, but if you are a beginner, you are fk ... because people with 2000 + h enter the server quickly farm late game gear and destroy everything they see - out of boredom. And to the next server because people escaped on their server long ago. Paranoia.
Of course, as long as you manage to transfer your character, because building turrets or walls next to obelisks or drops is almost a standard.

I also do not recommend unofficial servers because although the toxicity is a bit smaller, it is still there.

If this game was on fire at £44.99 I would not piss on it to put it out. IMHO graphics are better than rust, gameplay is better due to the single player mode but this is let down by a game breaking but your survival depends on items and the countless hours to obtain them for them just to disappear is unacceptable 5 years down the line its still not fixed

TLDR: This game is fundamentally flawed. It does everything to prevent you from enjoying it. It doesn’t allow you to explore, while making exploration mandatory. If you want to play this: don’t play it alone, you’ll be in for a bad time.

So I just received this game for free on Epic Games Store like many other people and as a fan of the survival game-genre (with base building, crafting and so on) I have looked at this game many times and found it interesting. But the fact that this is an MMO has always be off-putting for me because I simply don't like that genre all that much, I am more of a lone wolf when it comes to those kind of games, a coop-guy with friends at best.

But getting this game for free I wanted to give it a shot since it CAN be played in single player as well. But as you can see with my rating: it's a horrible experience since it's fundamentally flawed. And after reading some reviews here where most of the high-rating critics wrote something like "You just have to learn how to play and git gud" I thought I'd give you my opposing impression, because those guys are blinded fanboys, nothing more.

As I said, this game is fundamentally flawed and you start to realize that pretty early on. I only played this for 2 hours and while playing the only thing I learned from this is that the games doesn't want me to play it.

A good game is self-explanatory or at least gives you a few guidelines, tutorials, a starting quest or whatever. All of this is absent in this title. There is a guide in the menu that tries to explain the basics but that's it. You get thrown into a world; you have this thing on your arm that seems to indicate some kind of plot but the game never tells you that there is any. You are left with exploring things on your own. And don't get me wrong: I like that. I am not criticizing the fact that this game has either no story or wants you to find it. I am in fact a huge fan of 7 Days to Die which does it in a similar way, but at least in 7 Days to Die you get an incentive: After 7 days you are overrun by Zombies. ARK has nothing of the sorts. It gives you an open space, lots of wood, stone, plants and dinos obviously and that's it. I think that's a bit lackluster but alright, I can get past that. My problem is a different one:
So you find yourself in this vast but seemingly empty world to explore but the game PUNISHES you for exploring it. After setting up a small camp somewhere I started exploring only to be 2-shotted by the first bigger dino I encountered. That in itself wouldn't be too bad if you wouldn't lose ALL OF YOUR INVENTORY. But where most games (like Terraria or 7 Days to Die btw) offer you the option to turn this off, ARK has NONE of the sorts (there are options before starting the game, but this missing, you can however install a mod to fix this, but honestly? This shouldn’t be fixed by a mod…)! Your stuff lies around where you die so that you can pick it up but that means that you either have to run back to your corpse which is tedious or you leave your stuff behind and craft/gather everything you had anew which is also tedious! And even if you try to get your stuff back, chances are that you just die again and again and again, every time since you respawn with NOTHING and whatever killed you will probably just linger around the place where it killed you anyway. And it's not that this happened in a high-level zone. I started in the easiest zone I was offered. The enemies were level 2! But that seemingly doesn't matter in this game because they just either kill you in an instant or withing a few seconds anyway! Normally I would just avoid said area and explore somewhere else, but then again: what to do about the stuff you lost? You can easily see that this is bad design.

And so you are left with the question: What to do in this game? And the only real answer is: Uninstall it and play something else because: You can only craft that much and crafting because boring after a while as well. So you want to start exploring but that only leads to you getting killed all the time because out of nowhere raptors jump in your face and kill you before you can even draw your weapon or turn around. And besides that: I am not sure if the game even offers you something for exploring it's world. I doubt that you can find weapons, armor or tools lying around.

I mean: I guess it's an MMO in the first place and I am at fault here for trying to play it alone. But honestly? Why would I invest any kind of money into this game when it only offers player interaction, where non is wanted? If you want this as a single player experience: Don't waste your money, don't waste your nerves.

And for those you write stuff like “git gud”: That’s not how a game should be designed. Also: How will you ever learn to play a game, when said game does everything in it’s power to stop you from learning it? This is bad design so stop defending it and face the truth.

I played on hosted server once and have not experience any violence from players however it is possible that some of the servers have a lot of rude people and you can get easily attacked or offended. Therefore try to find friendly servers! Like everywhere in multiplayer community you have idiots playing games that want only to destroy other people fun (and or do not want to cooperate). For me graphic is on the highest level, music is great but quite repetitive and I can play this game for hours and not get easily bored (otherwise I have to feed all of my 200 dinos!). I recommend it for people in age between 10-50 years old. The game is fun and you can have even more of that playing with friends. With variety of maps (that each is completely different from another) you must know what to build first or where to go to complete the stage or simply finish the game map. ARK: Survival Evolved is not something to say it's good. It starts off like it's going to be a fun game, but as you progress, it gets quite boring. 50/50 game that is not worth paying for.

Of course it cannot fight with Subnautica or others, but remember they are different knid of survival.

BUT if you have serious doubts to play it i want to tell that despite my first positive opinion, it has really a big amount of bugs, and it is not friendly with the optimization, for that, i reccomend to you to see you specs and test different gameplays online (Beware, there are a lot biased!!) after go for it. Sadly it also has a lot of tier-bully clans, that would abuse you online, making competitive PVE a pain in the ass.

Is Bad? No Is Good? Decent. I can reccommend it 100%? No. What i reccomend is to serach for the late updates & work of the Devs on the game, also the lattest non Biased opinions of the community.

The last thing towarn about it that the Devs are really retarded for a lot of things, but specially customers treathment, so ignore their **** I understand people that left the game due to them.

The games idea is brilliant. It's sort of an adult version of Pokémon, where you capture and breed your favorite dinosaurs and let them fight against the threats of other players and the environment. For the first 10 or so hours it is tough, but really rewarding. Building controls could be better, but that's nitpicking. After a while you unlock more tools, weapons and other useful stuff for survival, build your base and start exploring. You can even unlock saddles to ride your dinosaurs. Sounds good, right?
Well if it wasn't for the huge issues the game has. Other people already stated the poor dev support, so I'm not gonna elaborate further. What I want to talk about is the technical issues.
My PC is by no means a beast, but it is capable of playing the newest games on mid/high settings. For example Assassins Creed Odyssey or Far Cry 5/New Dawn at 60fps.
I own an RX580 8GB, a 4th gen i7 and 16GB of RAM. This should be enough for everything in 1080p. But ARK struggles to keep constant FPS. I tested the steam version and the version of the Windows Store (which was a disaster, no fullscreen and no mouse lock, forced to use a gamepad) and I couldn't get stable FPS, even on medium settings. On low I get my 60 FPS, but not stable. The developers said this should be fixed by now, but it's just another lie from them. Also the game in its full form is close to 200GB in size, because the developers don't seem know how to pack assets. This game reeks early access in every aspect, but the developers try to sell it to you at full price. With a season pass. Which doesn't include the newest DLC Genesis. Paired with the lies, false promises and the incompetence of the developers, you get a game which is pretty close to fraud.
If you want another example for the developers incompetence, check reviews of their newest game Atlas. DON'T BUY AT FULL PRICE. DEEP SALE OR NO SALE.

First of all the games graphics are very good. Atmosphere and textures are well on ultra settings and better than all games in the steam store. It is not only realistic, but it is also beautiful. It is very different type of game and gameplay is very good for that.

Problems are about server system. There is servers with PVP or PVE settings. PVP servers are unplayable. You can transfer your character to another server easily but server need to be played for 30 days and it makes pvp servers unplayable for new players. Old players ruining every server by going there and dominating with robotic guns in everywhere. And you can challange with them. Also there is trolls and it is ruining the topic. The forgotten topic is "survival game".

PVE is well and enjoying but becoming pointless after playing for 50 hours. It is turning into building simulator but not survival game.

There is hardcore servers that makes it survival game and if your character dies in there you lost all. It is good for survival game but also boring in this game. Because ark is so buggy and servers are tresh so you cannot play in hardcore servers without free deaths.

You can create server by money and play with your friends in there with LAG

You can create server in your own computer. But it is... burning your own computer also.

Another problem is character skeleton, it is unrealistic.

Another problem is character types. You can't customise it so it makes this worse than stereotypes of this game like "Conan"

    Sounds 9/10

I found myself at times surprised with how large and pretty this game was, the idea of starting out as nothing at all, and making torches, spears, etc, and evolving eventually into a tribe with advanced weapons and vehecles is interesting and as far as progression, it was executed well.

I found myself getting killed by raptors A LOT, even when I had good armor/equipment, it ended in me getting very pissed off a lot as I lost a lot of good dinos to packs of raptors. At times I found myself having to spawn in a sword and shield below level to craft one just so I'd have a fighting chance if I encountered them.

But none of that is what's influencing my review. I could handle most of the bugs, as a former Fallout/Bethesda fan. But what really does it for me is the poor way this half-baked game was executed. It's not ever going to get fixed, so if you're hoping it will, you might aswell give up.
Instead of fixing it, they decided to first start pumping out paid content for it, which compounded the already existing glitches/bugs in it even worse, as an aspiring game dev, seeing what a lot of companies are doing has really taught me how not to make games. Building on already broken code with more broken code is going to result in something really bad.
But then they took it a step further with Atlas, and the way they've handled these games is the real reason I'm giving it a 0 despite that fact that at times I loved playing this game.

All in all, the people who oversaw this game and made the decisions, should be absolutely ashamed. Ark was a lazy cashgrab, and Atlas was even worse. I'll never buy another game from Wildcard/Grapeshot/etc, you've lost my business.

The game has an unbelievably terrible progression system. It will take hours upon hours to level up your character and until you level up a ton you can barely do anything. The only way to level up is to join a clan on a server and attempting to join a clan which isn't even worth your time because the community is toxic and the servers consist of Chinese people with incredible lag and over 1k hours in that specific server alone. And with that crappy progression system, you have no weapons or means to defend yourself. Skill or smarts doesn't matter in this game, the amount of sweat and sheer hours does. All they'll do is kill you.
The combat system is also awful, with the combat feeling incredibly floaty with almost no feedback for you attacking stuff, your attacks have no impact and getting attacked by dinosaurs will launch you back and kill you in 1 - 2 hits.
The game runs like garbage even on great hardware. I've got a GTX 1070ti and an I7 6770 and 16gb of ram and I get 30-40fps on medium settings at 1080p. Not to mention it doesn't look very good.
The only thing good about this game is that it can be fun with friends because the character creator is so unbelievably bad that it's funny. Then again, anything can be fun with friends, even watching paint dry.

I could go on and on, DON'T BUY THIS GAME. Especially at 60 dollars, if you want to see how awful this game is without spending money, play Ark Mobile, the basics are all there the only difference being that Wildcard made it Pay To Win because they're scum and they represent everything wrong with the industry today. Play a game like 7 Days to Die, It is constantly getting fresh updates with devs who listen to the community with much better balance all for 15 - 20 dollars.

Public Servers also have cross-server raids and other fun stuff.
private/unofficial servers have fewer cross server raid issues but the service interruptions are real and make the game useless (you spend weeks building and playing to have it all ruined with no notice because "developers")

Let's not start the positives: The content of the game is just huge! There are more than a hundred dinosaurs and creatures of all kinds, and it is possible that I am wrong and there are even more! The graphics and art direction of this game are just sublime, immersive environments and especially life is present everywhere, you can watch the dinosaurs move and attack others or attack them yourself or tame them! The music (soundtrack) of this game is just fantastic and absolutely fabulous, Gareth Coker did a monster job! It is, I think, one of the games with the best OST in the independent domain! Not to mention the DLC which are certainly paying, but still add tens or hundreds of hours of games to the basic game that is already very long! And do not say that the game is flat and contains no story, just see the number of notes arranged throughout the map and especially the cinematic end to understand that the game hides a big story behind.

But, as in all excellent games, there are negative points: Unfortunately the game is not very very well optimized, although there is still a huge difference between the advance access version and the final version, the game in Ultra is almost unplayable for those who do not have a GTX 1070 or 1080 and again ... But hey, I personally play high with a GTX 1080 and the game runs very well! Unofficial servers (which are purchased on hosting sites such as Nitroserv or OMGSERV) are not stable at all! There are many lags, automatic disconnections and crashes.

But luckily the game remains fun to play for those who want to have fun with friends! For those interested in history, there are many secrets to discover and mysteries to solve! And the support of mod via the workshop extends enormously the game! Whether mods that add maps, creatures, gameplay, armor / weapons / tools and etc! In short, ARK is one of the best independent games in history!

If the DLC contained even a few fixes for the base game, it would be somewhat acceptable, however all the DLC does is introduce more bugs, increase grind time, and insult your intelligence. The official servers are toxic, as are the forums, with people who have spent thousands of hours in this "game", and are rationalizing that it must be good for that reason alone. It could not be that they were suckered into paying $60 for something that should still be considered Early Access, and cannot afford another game. The best legacy bug is still the disappearing Dino that you spent a hundred of hours grinding for (no exaggeration), only to log in and find out it glitched so hard the server wiped it. Also be warned that this is one of "those" games where you will spend an ungodly amount of time reading a wiki to learn how to do anything. Of course if you do this you will learn all the gimmicks built into the game that defy logic and allow you to become OP, at least until the bugs catch up and smack you back to your starting point, or you try an official server and lose everything in a raid while offline when the attacker utilize one of the many glitches to bypass your defenses.

Most of the game design seems to have be the by committee version, but then they apparently wrote all the ideas and put them in a hat. For some reason though, they only drew 80% of them back out. So nothing ever seems completely thought out, or well implemented. Tiny animals drop items 3X their size, or magic being prevalent on one map, tech on another, with no explanations to cover the gap considering this is supposedly all the same planet.

At this point it seems that this has become a dump project, where adding random ideas to continue pushing new DLC is their only goal. For this reason this is not worth getting until they patch the major legacy bugs (clipping X 100), if ever. This also extends to their new game, which is likely going to suffer from the same issues in management and quality control. You also need to factor in the server costs, DLC costs, and that unless you want to be at a sever disadvantage, you will need at least three friends to play with. There is virtually no story, so you need to do a lot of role playing. You will also need to get used to the fact that the devs assumed you would min-max with the wiki knowledge, so they spawn a tonne of animals together that mostly only want to eat you. Immersion is not one of their goals, just making as much money as possible, in the shortest amount of time, with the least amount of work.

Plus, the game is very poorly optimized on PC and even with a GTX 1070, I need to play on medium settings at 4K to even hope to get a stable 60 FPS. To add insult to injury, the game crashes at random, sometimes at the most inopportune times possible, often resulting in death. Overall, this game is incredibly fun at short bursts with incredibly diverse and gigantic worlds with interesting dinosaurs, but it is also a buggy and poorly optimized mess that can also be boring at times. Bumping the price from $30 to $60 for the "official release" without fixing anything beforehand is criminal. Three years after initial launch, this game shouldn't be considered as anything more than a mess of an early access title, as it's still needing constant updates. The developers are unprofessional and have been known to ban players that raid clans that have devs as members. They ban players for playing by the rules of their own game, no glitches or cheats required. They wiped the servers of everyone who played for the first 2 years to make room for the new customers for the "official release". They released new maps before they even had skyboxes, textures, proper collisions, or working servers.

The only redeemable thing about this chore of a game is the variety of creatures and the animations for them. Regardless if you'll play single player or multiplayer, avoid this game, and don't support it either. This is coming from a longtime player of the game.

Apparently there is no enforced law for what constitutes as an honest Beta period, but it is defined as a phase shortly before release in order to test and fix bugs.
However this company constantly lied to their players with fake news and promises, to keep it on beta for over 4 years. What's more is during beta period there was even DLCs charged the full price of the game, which offers little content that should already be there in the first place since it is Beta.

Evidently there was also a scandal that came to light over how this company founders broke NDA and stole content and poached employees from a previous company they left. During the lawsuit it was also revealed that this company had sold out to a Chinese company which had copied Ark into another game clone called Dark and Light with almost everything the same but minor aesthetic tweaks in order to fool players into buying something double the original price for same content.

Last but not least, this company was using dishonest marketing ploys to create hype and trick the community. The staged contests were rigged for example the modding contests which were originally announced as vote-based were in the end overturned silently by a "judge" with no explanation why, this meant that submitted popular original mod entries that had 100k+ votes lost out to broken unworkable mods with less than 20 votes that even used copied cheap assets. The company was so ashamed of pulling this stunt that they even skipped announcing the final results in the wake of community backlash. Then it turned out the cash-prize winners were close friends of staff members and so it became a clear case of Nepotism. Then the mod liason hired on their payroll was the 'top winner' of said contest with a mod that nobody plays with the lowest votes and with the skillset of a baby gorilla and everyone knew he won unfairly, but as usual Nepotism etc.

Just another case of scandals that outrages the community. There are many other scandals like how every patch update promised fake results like 20-30% performance increase which is ridiculously high and unbelievable since the game continues to run like a 16-bit lag-fest with no actual improvement, and patches released 2-3 times a day forcing players to quit and restart servers over minor changes. And how the staff continue to ban players for selfish reasons like for attacking their streamers and friends ingame and for posting negative reviews. But the list goes on and fair warning to anyone who feels they deserve support and attention for being horrible rich company executives laughing their way to the bank by trampling on the communities' feelings.

I played the game from Alpha release and back then there was a number of bugs and not a lot of content. I remember how exited i was when they introduced Argentinians into the game, and then T-Rex. Since then the game has significantly improved since a couple of years ago, and i would definitely recommend this game to others.

The graphics are extremely good in my opinion and it runs very well on a good gaming pc.

Wildcard also has a very good attention to detail, like for instance if you look at the dinos in the eye they blink and look around. It works very well on dinos like the Kracken.

On the side of dinos there is plenty of dinos to make the game interesting (over 200) and they are adding more and more.

Firstly the game IS NOTHING LIKE ADVERTISED. NOTHING. Literally no one gives a f*** if you are a new player they will kill you and grief you on a PVP server because they can.

Forget taming dinosuars, you will NEVER get the chance on a PVE server. Older players have made it their life mission to royally screw you over as a new player. You get to choose spawn locations from a tab, first logging in you will be surrounded by bases of other players. Why? Because they are d***s. The mechanics in the game don't allow you to build near anyone's base, so the low level area with hardly any carnivores? Ya they have them locked down to make it impossible for you to level, progress, and respawn when you die. It's also intentional. They will build small nods inbetween their bases to prevent other players from building. So you are forced to move into the higher level carnivore infested areas to do anything.

All in all if this doesn't detour you from buying the game you've been warned. It's nothing like it's presented on youtube, by people that have been in the game since day one, with huge tribes, and private servers.

In all honesty No Man's Sky was better than this game.

There's so much fun to be had with all the unique types of dinosaurs scattered across the large world. One big flaw I have with this game is what the devs have done to it. So many changes have been made, and causes it to be unbalanced at times. If the devs could go back to the older style of the game, I think this game would be a much bigger success than it is right now. Again, this game isn't perfect, but is definitely worth a shot. Expand

A lot of the bugs people have mentioned have been fixed since well before EA, I'm not sure what they're going on about. Yeah the game's support is genuinely terrible, but I only had to use it twice, once when I got a dinosaur stuck underneath the terrain (back in early access - and this only happened once) and second when I messed up with tranferring tribe ownership. Couldn't get any help with the first one because I couldn't remember the dino's name and it had been a few days (it was dead, jim), but the second one got resolved speedily.

You have Official Servers and Unofficial servers. Official servers seem to have a lot of toxic players on them. But those exist on unofficial also.
There are thousands of mods available for your local play or to have on an unofficial server. The game has been in the top 10 most played games on Steam for TWO YEARS. Typically has 60,000+ people playing in the US prime time and on weekends.

The PVP... claims are that PVP isn't balanced. I don't play PVP, but most of the complaints are about other PLAYERS. The people who make the game can't fix players being mean. Yet the developers are the ones that get blamed.

I've got over 2500 in the game, still enjoy it.

The game does require a good machine, but the way it plays on machines varies greatly.

    Ark Survival Evolved:
I have finally decided to review this game after 8400+ hours of gameplay in early access mode.

    Positives:
The game is a great idea. The way the game begins is tough… I mean really tough. It is a challenge to get started and anyone without any patience is going to struggle but I do have patience and to me the hard difficulty of this game was a real refreshing eye opener… but be warned it is not for the feint hearted. The best part of the game is the idea that you can breed your dinosaurs. This has been implemented in a really interesting way, where you can pool your breeding into achievable goals and breed out your favourite dinosaurs to have the stats that you have always wanted… but all this comes after you have set up a kibble base, and tamed great level versions of your favourite dinosaurs. I personally play on PVE and as you can see, for over 8K hours I have had a great deal of fun and I have met some fantastic friends in the community… This ought to be a great game, but there is another side to it that I have to address…

    Negatives:
I am so sad to say this, because I have put so much effort into playing this game legitimately and have done my best to help create a wonderful community and support network on a great PVE server… however, the developers of the game have treated us long serving players with utter contempt. We have been completely mistreated, taken for granted, unrewarded, lied to, mis-sold to… under a cloak of awful communication and absolutely brutal and dire decisions that have kicked the games player base in the teeth. The scenario now is that the devs were going to cull the lowest 10% of ghost servers… and instead have decided to wipe over 33% of servers with medium traffic to consolidate their server lists and re-use these to plonk new servers on that do not have the same issues that the old servers had, and then to cap it all, any support for the old servers and the long serving players who play on those servers is to be canned so that we are on our own if we lose a character or experience any technical issues… This is a huge let down of the Ark gaming community, and sadly it is pretty irrelevant, because any support I have needed in my 8K+ hours has been utterly non-existent anyway. I reported a serious harassment case and followed every single instruction to the letter, and no action was taken against the wrong-doers. This was a shameful let down and completely spoiled my enjoyment of the game… The devs carried on doing little tiny favours for a select few gamers whilst most tickets were left completely unattended. I have colleagues who lost their level 100 character in transit and not a single effort to answer the ticket was made, that was over 2 months ago now. The sad truth is, that this team of developers and community managers, is sadly the most useless and incompetent and uncaring team that I have ever experienced in a game… so if you have any issues playing this game… do not even bother to report it… nothing will be done… this Dev team do not care. They care that they receive your money… they will go on to look after the new servers and make things look as though they are prepared to provide support there… but it is as many things are in ark… it is lies and false promises.

    Conclusion:
This game had SO much going for it… it was a fantastic idea but the execution of the game and the choices made by the developers has left a bruised gaming community feeling ripped off and mistreated, un-respected and un-supported… and sadly their actions and incompetence in how they run their business has led to this review being a vote of no confidence. The way the legacy servers are setup now means that over-time the old servers will lose players and get wiped, so either old players stick around on current servers and wait for the server to die, or we start afresh on a new server and wait to be lied to and sit having no confidence that one day these new servers wont be wiped themselves… and that is the finding of this review… that ultimately, there is no point in playing this game, because it provides 10% fun, 80% grief and trolling and a final 10% of crying into your coffee as you hope your dino baby survives over the next ridiculously badly timed update that takes away something else that used to be a good idea.

Do not buy this game… do not play this game… go and play something similar where the developers actually deserve your money.

What can i say about Ark? I was a day 1 EA purchaser of this game. The game was beautiful, with a amazing concept and an ambitious dev behind it. For the first 6 months or so, this was the game to play. It was amazing. Very frequent updates, great communication from the developers, lots of community interaction.

So what happened after that? Well, it's hard to say why, but at the start of 2016, the Developers attitude changed for the worst. Updates drew to a month or more a part, often days or even weeks late, and nearly always with the "meat" of that update missing. It was disappointing, but, issues only got worse. Communication stopped almost completely, community interactions stopped at best and at worst became negative. A number of times, a lead member of the development staff posted on reddit calling people liars, and being a complete jerk off. As time went on, things got worse and worse, the customer support got worse, major problems with the game were outright ignored, and in fact intentionally made even worse, the developers began to lie to the community, and they even released DLC while still in EA.

The devs still to this day refuse to even acknowledge that their game has problems which leaves very little hope for the people on Official Servers. If you say the game is too grindy, the devs will laugh at you and tell you you're wrong. If you want to re spec your stats more than once at max level, the devs will tell you to buy the game again and level an entirely new character on a entirely different copy of the game (and in fact, TheRightHand (one of the lead developers) did say this and received quite a bit of backlash for it). They do nothing but deflect criticism and dodge the issues.

So, why did i give this game a 3? Well, it's because of the developers. They keep compounding the problems the game has, and making already bad problems flat out worse. They treat the community like dirt, they lie, they could care less about anyone's actual experience playing the game. There is a good game here, but it's so bogged down with all the **** the devs keep piling on it that it's completely buried. Dig this gem out of the pile of **** it's buried in clean it up a little and it will shine, but the devs seem to have no interest in doing that.

In conclusion, i will say that this game is incredibly grindy, repetitive, unbalanced, and unrefined, not worthy of it's $60 asking price, and the developers, Studio Wildcard, are not worthy of your trust. Because of what Studio Wildcard has done I can not and will not recommend this game or any game they produce in the future.

the worse support ever. Bunch of players can't connect to the game for a day, and no single word from support.
    lots of bugs.
    toxic community.
at release - just a queue simulator.

ARK Survival Evolved is out of BETA, but unfortunately it doesn’t quite feel like it..
Fair Warning im awful at survival games and they don’t keep my attention for long…so if youre looking for an in depth review on all the survival stuff, youre not going to get it here,
As a casual survival game fan, Ark survival is probably the most half baked one ive played..
The hardest part of this game is actually getting into a server…
the server numbers don’t make sense as there are some with numbers way over the limit and others that say they are under the limit until you try to join it..
but once you do find a server, this server is basically your home unless you want a fresh start..
There are 2 modes you can play in… one having modern technology and one focusing on just primitive technology, but you choose an area to spawn in at ..all with different difficulties with your fresh character and you get to surviving…
    |Knowing how to survive is one thing..
knowing how the game works is another because this post beta game has no proper tutorial to teach you the game. I had to go to youtube to learn how to pick up stones, im not even joking…
I found myself doing this a lot when I ran into questions like how to tame a dinosaur..
oh did I forget to mention dinosaurs..
    theres dinosaurs…
This game is full of them but theyre not as cool as I thought they would be..
Theyre essentially jerks that try to kill you while you collect sticks rocks and berries… .
the game is a pretty steady evolution of equipment which is cool..
youll level up as you craft, collect, and hunt.. and you can dump skill points into stats but you can also learn how to craft new items like fires to cook raw meat.. btw another youtube trip.. how do you start a fire…
the higher level you are the better items you can craft and the better dinosaurs you can tame, ill save you the trip.;. you beat them until theyre unconscious and throw a saddle on them,...
But as a survival game you have to manage your health, hydration, hunger, and body temperature…
This is done by collecting berries, building shelter, hunting animals with the weapons you craft, or going for a swim..
this was the coolest part is how easy not dying of thirst is here…
finaly a survival game gets it.. let me just drown myself until im not thirsty anymore..
it works in this game as it should…
but there are pvp and pve servers.. there are other people running around, theyl lbuild huts and fires too, these items cant be destroyed as youre able to lock them, but you can squad up and join tribes.. or be a lone wolf like me cause youre awesome at surviving and you don’t need a tribe…
theres no real task here… its just dumb fun of running around a map and try to build the coolest stuff you can, sort of like minecraft with none of the fun stuff but with dinosaurs…
which again are here to kill you…
when you die you have all of your blueprints and levels… and youre able to rush to your dead body fr your gear if you can remember where you died at.. but other players can pick your gear too so good luck…
I see the good in this game, I can understand why people love it and how they can have fun within its world…
of creating your own survival goals and setting out to accomplish them..
but it’s a half baked game that still feels as though its in beta…
I cant argue that this game isn’t fun.. but I can argue that there are plenty of better more polished survival games out there on console
    I give ARK Survival Evolved
    a 6/10

There is a ton to do, from the survival notes hidden throughout the islands giving a glimpse at a much larger story to a ton of interesting and neat dinosaur specific features. Wall climbers, gliders, and gryphon's oh my!

The bad: That said, those that know the grind, and it is exactly that, a grind, get a massive advantage over others. With the full release, a slew of unfinished or unoptimized performance issues still remain from it's open development such as horrid hitbox detection, under the map exploits, and many of the dinosaurs do not serve a long term purpose in the game. It's a race to 4-5 dinosaurs for the pvp end with there being significant overlap into the pve side.

The Ugly: Studio Wildcard has left in numerous unfinished or outright broken features. There are still clipping issues with structures that were not addressed in the beta, the incorporation of cluster servers means that every server will either be a fiefdom of a mega-tribe or will be merrily wiped for amusements sake whenever boredom strikes, the grind and timesink factor is still Korean MMO level of bad, and opening the servers for free access to the Asian marketplace is going to go over as it always does, poorly, as the cultural differences between what is acceptable gaming behavior between west and east is not compatible.

It has potential, but Ark survival evolved shoots itself in the foot over and over again in favor of grind over engaging gameplay and puts a heavy prioritization on shoot first, ask questions never on their official servers.

GIVE THIS GAME A SHOT! Great "next/current" gen survival game! Has a lot of great promise but a rather steep learning curve if playing alone (similar to Don't Starve), but has a ton of potential for being the next great survival game. Lots of solo and community driven gameplay elements and a pretty immersive world to be in. Not the most "realistic" survival game in existence but it does take a more grounded approach to movement and fatigue (i.e. If you are swimming to long and you run out of stamina you may actually drown just like in real life).

Biggest issues are that it does take a pretty meaty rig to take full advantage of the graphics (seems like a modified Crytek engine) on the highest settings. This game is JUST in early access so I expect to see some of the animations, bugs, and slight clipping issues get resolved over time. I only have about 8ish hours with this game so my review is based on initial impression and overall potential the game has.

Specialises in trick shots before mastering the fundamentals. Deeply flawed, but hard to ignore. [Issue#267, p.58]

Like so many survival/crafting games, from Minecraft to Subnautica, ARK presupposes a player with a lot of time to dedicate to the experience, a high tolerance for repetition, and a fondness for chaos and the unexpected. With its sci-fi inflected single player campaign, ARK at least offers a solo player the chance to get the gist of the game without the threat of anti-social humans ruining whatever progress has been made. For the past two years, ARK has been helping to shape the genre and now that it's finished, it feels like the genre is due for the next stage of evolution.

It'll delight you, it'll make you despair, but ultimately Ark will leave you with a real sense of satisfaction. [Nov 2017, p.76]
