A rushed product that Trion is buying 10/10 reviews for. Textures don't load, memory leaks, BSODs and they are giving 10/10 reviews to it? You can tell they are fake.

At first glance Archeage seems like a fresh take on MMOs. Digging deeper you find out it is a huge cash grab by the company that made it. Even paying subscribers are limited by earning labor. Of course you can get more labor by spending cash in their shop. Getting land is also a joke. The land is snagged the second it appears by bots, so having any land is near impossible. Crafting has been made obsolete by the farming of drops for loot in one area that is camped by all players at the same time. it is total chaos and bad planning by the developers.

Want to customize your character? That will cost cash... a lot of it. Want to sell your land... that will cost cash. This game is a total mess and a huge disappointment.

A list of gripes are, no land available as one guy with 4 or 6 accounts has grabbed land at the very start of the game release is is extorting the player base to pay for unfinished houses (not complete houses mind you) or zones and having this multiplied by 10 fold makes for inefficient land hogging and extortion. Land which is probably the main reason why people purchase patron status have to wait 1-3 weeks which is half a month to even consider the prospect of owning property should they find that someone has stopped paying tax; which makes for an unhappy customer. Next up is the game's poor optimization, when you have tons of people fighting in one area especially in the ocean the game gets extremely laggy with invisible characters spawning 20 seconds too late only to find yourself dead and unable to control your character because of it with frame rates jumping from 4 to 40 at random even with a decently powerful GPU. Queue times still seem to plague the game, especially for free players (as if they haven't had it bad enough with no labor points to do anything) wait from 3 - 6 hours which eliminates the prospect of new players wanting to subscribe as it just leaves a bad taste in the player's mouth knowing that 70% of the game's features are locked out and you can't try them unless you take the risk and shell out the money to find out there is not land available. And lastly the game's focus is on interaction with fellow players, trading, and fighting which is no where near complete. Wanna hire a farmhand to pick your crops? He just made off with both your money and your plants. Wanna hire someone to convert your logs into chopped lumber? He just made off with your lumber. The trade function has not been tweaked to allow players to trade goods and have them trade back the refined product and yet another game *cough (WoW) allows you to trade an item for enchant without him swiping it away. Now is it a horrible game? No, no it is not however the lack of "love" and effort from the devs to polish the game has made the game much more frustrating than it has to be. One feature that could ease the pain of patrons with no land would probably be the guarantee of ONE house plot, as houses do not effect the market demand / goods in fluctuation (and mainly so we have a roof over our heads as we cry about how we do not have farmland) Come back in about few months and check back with the community, otherwise please do not god forbid try the game with patron or free otherwise. ArcheAge is not for kids or the faint of heart. The ESRB rated AA Mature 17+ and is not a solo-friendly MMO especially if you are playing via free-to-play and were hoping to experience all aspects of the game. Even as a paying Patron you will have no choice but to either join a guild, a Family, work in groups like a pack of lions or all three. At about level ten to twelve, though, you start to feel the sharp teeth of this game. You may want to be aware of a few built-in game mechanics before you press that buy now button. First, players have an ability called Bloodlust allowing them to attack members of their own faction for any reason. Yes, you read that correctly. Pirates, another faction or occupation, are among us! These players can organize Pirate Guilds and generally have the goal of stealing your possessions to accumulate Infamy, a type of status. Second, only paying players can own land. On the Lucius server, all the land has been claimed, so even if you were a paying Patron, you have a limited number of possibilities. In an incompetent attempt to justify his thievery, Krowe on the Lucius server propounded that I should have planted my small garden of Turmeric herb for a quest on Protected land. You may plant on any of the land and need to do so in order to complete your first low-level farming quests. However, because all of the plots used to create Protected land are occupied, you have no choice but to try Public Protected land. These are small plots that are also completely covered with other players crops. At this point you could try to join a guild or become part of a game Family, an arrangement that allows you to plant crops on a family members land. However, everyone has their land filled to the brim with their stuff right now. You are down to one choice, plant on public land. The catch is, any player can uproot your plants, stealing them from you even though the game labels it a crime. Want-a-be Pirates like Krowe simply make you their enemy even when we are on the same side. I have noticed a disturbing growing trend among AA players. My plants were clearly marked as my property when Krowe stole them. But his justification was because I had planted them on Public land. So misinformed players assume the role of a self-appointed Public-land Sheriff removing what they call an illegal garden. However, there is no such thing as an illegal garden in AA. It's clearly just a plant on Public land. I have scratched my head numerous times as I read the Trial chat channel. If a person takes something that isn't his in real life, he knows he's stealing. How is it that he feels it's different and justified in a game like AA? Petty theft is still just greediness, the taking of something that doesn't belong to you, in a game or not. What happens after the theft is absolutely ludicrous in my opinion. After being reported, the game's legal system puts the thief on trial where you will witness the most bizarre display of human lunacy and degradation. Defendants like my nemesis Krowe defend themselves in the most bizarre extremes from childishly offering a "cookie" to their victim to sounding like a sinner in confession on Sunday. Then the player jury sentences the defendant to varying amounts of time in jail. Although it may seem like a deterrent, the sentences lack any real meaning or weight. A player may murder, steal and uproot affecting multiple players and only get 15 minutes in jail. And even if sentenced to jail time, the thief has the ability to break out. No, you never get your stuff back. There is also a darker side to AA. Before our eyes is a cleverly cloaked system that prevents free to play. How? If you as a free-to-play player plant on Public land, it gets uprooted and stolen by so called Pirates who receive lenient sentences. Thus you have no choice but to become a Patron so you can own Protected land. But don't forget, all the land is taken! So, you're back to square one…or you can wait till more land is made available by Trion. You could also wait until another player can't pay the taxes on their land. Either way, if you're a Patron, you're paying while you wait. Damn. Secondly, when players of the same faction can attack and steal from each other, it forces them to join a guild or Family simply for protection. Joining, though, reduces your personal wealth because the guild leader is the person who can exact taxes and ultimately benefits from you, the guild raids and Trade Runs. Not everyone can run a guild. In fact, the factions of the game are NOT the Nuian Alliance against the Haranya Alliance. It's really the Patrons against the Pirates. The Patrons craft or farm and the Pirates steal it from them, anywhere and at any time. In a game where it may take several hundred hours to seriously farm, the only players having fun are the Pirates. The victims certainly don't enjoy having hours of work stolen by a member of their own faction, Pirate or opportunist. Playing AA comes at a price. The cost is either your time, your money or your possessions. You'll have to decide which one you can part with at different points throughout the game. But really, once all the rival castles have been destroyed and all the Pirates control all the wealth, then what? Expand

The graphics are outstanding and there are many well done nuances to the world to allow for full game emersion. Building fast clipper ships, merchant trading vessels (or warships) and braving the high (PvP) seas as a merchant, mercenary or pirate all make the game unique and fun to play, but the heart of the game is crafting, trade and commerce. In order to get the full functionality and enjoyment out the game, you need at least a small plot of land (8x8) where you can safely farm the materials you need to craft, trade, and sell a ton of stuff. Here’s the catch: THERE IS NO LAND LEFT IN ARCHEAGE!! I was on a relatively new server with a relatively low population, and after hours and days of hunting for an available plot of land, I found nothing (I’m not unique; this sad song has been sung by many a player). Apparently during the Beta and early days of the release, there was a huge land grab; some players/guilds own several plots of land creating a land monopoly, which essentially shuts out new players. If you can’t find land you have to use either a public farm (which is very restrictive and subject to player theft) or rely on a guild or friend to let you use theirs. Trion will happily charge you the $15/month patron fee, but they do not guarantee you full game functionality, so they’re essentially perpetrating fraud. It’s kind of like paying full price for a car and only getting two wheels. As such, I’d recommend staying with a free-to-play account, which unlocks about 70% of the game content. That said, that’s about all you get with a paid (“Patron”) account since there is no land left to new players, so why pay real money?

Perhaps if Trion develops a queue that eventually allowed one to at least get a 16x16 farm, then it might be worth sticking with a patron account. It would make more sense, however, to open up more land to new players (there appears to be broad expanses of land not being used for anything). I would be willing to (dare I say) use instanced zones for housing and farms just so I could get full game functionality.

I queried Trion about these issues and ideas, and never received a reply on my ticket. The only advice I’ve received recommended I search and wait for a land plot to default due to a lapse in taxes…Gee, thanks Trion. I guess spending 90% of your “game” time randomly searching the entire world for hours on end waiting for another player’s plot of land to default is what passes for a good time? Sound like tons-o-fun! I think I’ll give my money to Blizzard.

I came into the game pretty excited for an MMO with "sandbox housing," only to realize that it was neither sandbox, nor was there housing. I camped expiring lots for 2 weeks before logging in at 6am with a friend to pick up a spot, only to make an enemy out of the guy that had 7 houses nearby and wanted mine for his 8th. When I wanted to upgrade from a 16x16 to a 24x24 farmhouse, I couldn't find a spot outside of the farmhouse-only plots thanks to cutthroat housing practices, while farmhouse-only areas had people that placed their houses square in the middle of multiple plots, taking 2x,3x, sometimes even 4x as much space as they needed, and screwing everyone else. Never mind the stupid labor system, the TS tree debacle, the coin purse exploit, the 3k gold I had taken away because someone bought items I listed on the AH with stolen/farmed/exploited gold.

Seriously, this game is so bad. The story is boring, the pay2win aspect runs incredibly deep, and the biggest thing going in the game (player housing) is impossible to find. When they released Auroria, it was full within an hour or 2. It's just an overall terrible game.

Land space...not enough. If you weren't there when server was first out, good luck getting land you want. And without that it can take a while to make enough gold to buy good spots.

PvP, it just plain sucks. Running support, even in a group, you won't get crap honor points while DPS rakes them in. Level 50 can gank a level 30 and rob them of their honor points -- should be some limit to it to avoid that. And yes, zergs zergs and more zergs - but what's new it's an MMO. Either way the PvP is horrible, unbalanced, and encouraging ganking folks; also you're forced into PvP zones for long periods so if you don't want to PvP might as well stop at level 30 or plan to take long breaks when it decides it is time for you to get killed.

I give this two points because the world is pretty, especially the water. Some of the music is okay and there's some fairly nice game mechanics like playing on a jury or composing your own music, but expect to hear nothing but 80s theme tunes. None of these make up for the significantly mediocre combat, utter lack of voice overs for quests and utterly an utterly forgettable story.

Oh and if you pay a subscription, good luck cancelling, because there's a neat bug that hides the button for some players in the account management screen, preventing you cancelling an automatically re-subbing game. Most will find the mechanics very annoying and the justice system in the game is a joke.

8 hour queue for free to play players. Game is horribly optimized and crashes often. Queue drops again after a crash. Basically impossible to play unless you subscribe (it lets you avoid the queue). And even if you subscribe, chances of it working properly are slim, at least at the current state of the game. Giving it a zero because it’s the worst mmo launch I have seen in the past 5 years.

The game has some new content for an online multiplayer game. Some, but not a lot. It's mostly a sum of the best aspects already seen in other MMORPGs. At the moment most players are spending their paid "patron" time waiting in queues, and the "head start" was a terrible flop, with a ton of problems. Probably in a couple of months queue problems will calm down and the REAL problems will arise. And they will be the usual endgame problems of most "Free to Play" (?) MMORPGs.

Terrible communication by their "Senior" Community Manager, Trion's CEO does a better job than he. The queues are horrendous and once you do get in-game, they are unstable and often disconnect you.

This game had huge potential, played in alpha and beta. However, it's becoming a complete failure in terms of the way it's been launched. I've been through multiple mmo launches and this ranks right up there with some of the worst. It's not THE worst, but it's definitely up there. I rated it a 2 out of 10 for a few reasons.

Queue times are horrid. If you've paid or are F2P it won't matter. A majority of players are stuck in very lengthy que's. I've seen patrons, those that paid, stuck in 2hours or more on their ques. I myself, learning from prior disasters, chose F2P. I've had the last three days in consecutive 6+hour ques, and wasn't even able to play more than 2 hours total. Yesterday was a 3 hour que, a disconnect from their end, and put back into a que with 4500 people ahead of me.

You will hear fanboy after fanboy speak of how great the game is, one of their major sticks was to allow player held land, but it's a majorly busted feature. The little bit of game time I have had, you cannot find available land anywhere. Now, they speak that not all people will be able to own land, this isn't a big feature to me, but I did look. I've even heard stories and seen some videos of massive amounts of land being owned by one person. They would have been better served by fixing que's and doing a land blitz a month down the road to make things just a bit more level on the playing field.

They do have some saving features in distinct class combinations, the ability to make and use boats, and also utilize any sort of weapon and armor combinations you would like. The lack of concern and correspondence by this company in terms of how they are failing with the ability to open servers to the public is ludicrous at best.

If they are truly vested in bringing forth a better gaming experience then they should truly listen to their community at large, and not hide from the public eye, nor turn a blind eye to their problems.

The game may be good but who would know? The queues are terrible. Trion has really messed up big time on the launch of this game. If you bought the founder packages I really hope that you can get your money back because little of what was promised has been delivered. Based on how the company is handling this, I don't have much confidence that it will get any better. Best to stay away.

Horrible. Forget the queues, it's just another generic, grindy mmo with no real defining qualities. Combat is static, clunky global cool down snore fest, questing and story is incredibly boring, art style and aesthetics are dull, and people are deluding themselves that this is even a good experience.

I couldn't even log-in because over all the servers had a queue of at minimal 400 players and numbers were dropping ever so slowly. I had to get up early in the morning anyhow and then I was able to log-in to one of the least populated servers.

I was really turned off by the character generation. Of all the many choices you can make, you can't get away from making your character look like some fey Asian variant. I got nothing against Asian's but I just don't like being forced to play a MORPG where my character has to look like one. I'd like the flexibility to make my character look like any race known or otherwise.

Then in game it's not very impressive at all. Like I've seen it all before. Overly saturated colors, bland scenery, giant invasive nameplates, no shadowing, cheap look and feel, etc.
It looks like the same bland Asian MORPGs I played ten years ago, except now the download was 9GB instead of 1GB so they can add Speedtree grass and trees, and some shaders to the otherwise same dull environment.
Also all the NPCs look unimaginatively Asian where I feel like I'm playing in an Asian version of Disneyland, also right on the get go the game complete with so much Gold seller spam you barely read any chat at all.

The best thing about it that it uninstalls well.

Star Trek Online is probably the best example of this, or Lord of the Rings Online in the same genre. These aim for satisfaction amongst as much of the player base as possible, and earn their money from multiple small level, happy investments from them; buying a fancy horse here, a sideline of quests there. In such set ups the one off cost can be quite high but, because people feel sympathetic to the game, and the purchases are sporadic and at-will, players will pay for it.

The second focuses on huge purchases from the infamous "Whales", individuals who spend an enormous amount of money on a game. In such a system F2P players are not the customer but the product, used to generate a world for the Whales, and such games are more like Facebook whereby your personal experience is secondary to the major donor streams. In these MMOs, because the Whale model is expected, the cost for individual systems rises massively above the standard, indeed often even a Monthly Subscription won't unlock all the content and there's a DLC store on top of that. And the game itself in turn becomes about providing the sense of status and power to the Whales, often as a fantasy escape from a real world where they have little.

Archeage is absolutely in the second category of MMO. Which is the first piece of the puzzle as to why some people are so heavily invested in it, and so dismissive of criticism. It is a game focused around elitism of the worst kind; one that not only seeks to encourage people to think of themselves as Whales, but actively despises those who do not.

Despite the claims, the first part of the game itself is nothing like Ultima Online or any true sandbox. It's a pure on-rails MMO like World of Warcraft and Everquest. But even more disengaged because everything is being done to hurry you towards End Game and the real nature of the beast. Quest locations are marked on both the mini map, the world map, and arrows beneath your character pointing directly at them. You can honestly just skip all the quest text and run from waypoint to waypoint and yes, kill 10 wildebeests. As far as Level 18 now and I have yet to see a quest that wasn't "Click that box" or "kill those things" bar one, a very short "follow the NPC and click the icon when he stops".

Until you hit the quest that teaches farming trading, and gives you the Donkey. The "Trade Run: Solzreed to Memoria" quest. Before now you've been questing in a coma. The only raised eyebrow was that mobs don't carry "drops" at all, only "purses" which you have to right click and open to get at your gold. You've noticed it took some of your "labor" points to open these, but nothing else seemed to be using them so... ok? This quest asks you to make some special Solzreed food and take it elsewhere. The first problem? It doesn't tell you what the recipe of that food actually is. I had to google it.

I then followed the instructions, and set off to place the Scarecrow that gives you some protected space and allows you to plant the crops that allow you to complete the quest. Then I discovered it; You're locked completely out of placing it unless you are a Patron, that is a paying subscriber of some kind. Growing wild allows other players to steal your crops, but the quest hints that you can grow in a public farm protected for 1 day. Except what it doesn't say is that the farms only take some crops, are scattered across multiple zones and to plant, feed, harvest your crops all take Labor. So much labor that when I first played, I didn't have enough from THIRTEEN LEVELS OF GAMEPLAY. That's what I get for wanting to open my looted gold, I guess?

The people who were obsessed with Archeage insisted to me during Closed Beta that Trion were going to change this horrendous mechanic; they did not. This time around, because of a bug giving me Patron on the first day, and only trying it at L17, I had enough Labor that I could finish the planting. Only now I can't do anything else unless I stay in game unattended for hours on end, thus causing the queues many of these reviews are now complaining about.

But what about the end game?! And this is the second place some of those 10s are coming from; Like EvE and any other PvP game which feeds individual ego, the supporters are irrationally dedicated to the game. They don't really care how miserable the experience is for the average player as long as they get to melt your face in it; yet you WONT be PvPing unless you're dropping whale money. Crafting to survive L30+ where it's all in a PvP zone? Massive labor requirements. Want a house? You needed labor AND real cash spent just to build it, and had to be in the Head Start to place it. A boat? Same again.

Don't believe the hype. Unless you plan to Whale on newbies, Archeage will hate you.

The only bad part where this game is dying is because of greed of company called TRION World. They just squeezing money from it's loyal players and even after that not providing them better service and support. People bought 150$ packs called Founder, some people got it some don't. Some people bought PATRON Subscription monthly based but they can't utilize it properly because of 1-7 hours standing in QUEUE, if a player is not a patron subscriber he might have to wait like upto 17 hours in queue to be able to play game for 1 hour and then Server Restart or random Crashes. Too many gold spammers taking over slots and loyal players stuck at QUEUE screen it's laughable. Not one GM or in-game mod exists to take care of that. They use script to kick AFKers which is not working 100% also so daily restart late night of server (MMO private servers do that never saw any officials doing it).

The Server queue, poor customer service and Greed is killing this USA English version of the game. Russian players have their own client/server at mail.ru but they are coming to TRION to play the game which is taking necessary spots for NA and EU region. Nothing against russians but if a country has the game in their own language it's common sense to go there. Trion will kill this game definitely if they don't change their approach. They didn't even compensate non-patron or Patron players or even Founder packs players. Highly immature, unprofessional way to run servers. Not acceptable.

This game is like that all the way through it, if you go west you can't go anywhere but one area to turn in your overseas pack if you want to defend yourself. That's right, if you go somewhere and the east hits you first your party members can't even hit them back only you can. Yet west coast they can hit you in about half the areas. This is especially bad with how the guards have no AOE so they can kill you and with only 10 people camping the area, still take your pack...

If you want PVP that is fair with a sandbox element this isn't your game. I'd go with warz before this and warz is crap. Just stay with EvE

If you can get past the fact that this game is a pay2win pvp centric gank feist there is also the issue of housing. One of Archeage's biggest features is the housing and for lack of a better term the developers showed outright incompetence in this area. Not only are the housing areas poorly done but the manner in which players may place them allows them to block an entire segment of land from use by other players. Some use this to give them the ability to place larger buildings down the track while others so that they can simply be an **** to others.

Nextly, you have the issue of "pirates", and I use this term loosely as most are trolls with more time then brains. This practice is supported by the developers through the creation of "tension, and war" zones in key leveling areas.

Lastly there is the issue of the economy system, simply put it works like this: the more a trade route is done the less it's worth. While this may work well for gold and resource hand ins it has lead to "Gilda stars" (which are untradeable), one of the major currencies within the game, is reduced to 1 star per run (when travelling to the other faction) or 4 for braving to the PvP island at the center of the map. This forces players no matter their stance on PvP-PvE to take part in risky trips for the "chance" at 4 stars (cheapest boat is 50, then 250, 400).

In conclusion, ArcheAge in its current state is a potentially great MMO being ruined by the poor, and outright questionable (at times) decisions of the developers in charge. At its current state I can't even remotely recommend anyone start playing this game unless a new server comes up and your a hacker (which is another issue with this game that the developers seem keen to ignore).

Bad. That sums up the game. The idea had potential but both XL and Trion fell into the "do what we know sells" trap and churned out yet another "Korean grinder". PvP is based solely on gear and if you're a flavor of the month (right now its Dark Runner or some otherBad. That sums up the game. The idea had potential but both XL and Trion fell into the "do what we know sells" trap and churned out yet another "Korean grinder". Pretty graphics (but nothing that hasn't been done before and done better) but that is about the only positive. PvP is based solely on gear and if you're a flavor of the month (right now its Dark Runner or some other Battlerage-based spec), then raw numbers, and the actual ability of players to think is at the bottom of the heap. Plus with sieges and every other in-game event tied to the clock you can forget about using sneakiness to attack when the numbers are more even or to simply wear down a dominate faction.

As to the PvE.... might as well forget it now. Sure you start out following a quest line that sounds promising (if rather overblown) at first there are enough quests with okay rewards that you don't have to grind a thousand and 1 monsters to progress. But by the time you hit 40 that all dries up as the quests peter out (to the point of there being zero in Auroria - the "end game" continent), the rewards fall flat (basically you're using level 40 gear at 50), and its all the same "go kill X mobs then come back". On top of that the dungeons do nothing to break the monotony; they're really just mobs with more hp that hit harder with a few bosses with unavoidable/ unresistable stuns plus automatic-kill attacks mixed in. Oh and rewards that unless you're really into to the RNG and grind-game that is Arche Age crafting make you wonder why you bothered. Of course that assumes you can even find a group to do the dungeons with at a level when they're supposed to be meaningful. Most of the time you're left waiting for some level 50+ player looking to get their daily mentor quests done to take you along for an ultra-boring zerg since the game lacks even a remote resemblance of a Looking for Group tool. Much less something on the level of the polished system that WoW reached despite being years older.

Speaking of which, when you compared Arche Age to that much older game you see a glaring difference.
WoW might be older and its graphics dated (but then again they're also true to the Warcraft games looks) but its clear that Blizzard actually put enough money and time into each aspect of the game to make them enjoyable. While XL dumped everything into the graphics and naval aspects and just assumed those and throwing around "PvP" and "sandbox" in the ads would be enough.

My advice - play it if you're bored but don't waste money on it. You'll just end up asking yourself why you bothered while waiting for something better to come along.

The majority of cutscenes are narrated by a woman trying to imitate an upper class British accent but not quite getting there, combined with her breathing out the lines like an asthmatic, removes any emotion or
weight from cutscenes. The naming scheme is also ridiculous with main story elements getting labels such as Aranzeb and Dahuta (pronounced da hoota), which when narrated has me laughing at most scenes. Which is a shame because the story itself is alright.

Basically Trion had two jobs for a game that has already been created and released; fiddle around with the game mechanics to suit their micro transactions and translate the game for a western audience. I can't comment on firsthand experience but judging from other reviews they have failed to foster a healthy f2p environment where people are happy to pay for skins and other items that didn't effect gameplay but rather the amount of time invested. Judging by the $150 founder packs that were up for offer they have instead decided to go down the pay to win route in an attempt to get as much money as possible.

In short it is still possible to enjoy Archeage, as a free player, despite it's below average localisation and blatant monetisation. Just don't encourage bad business practices by financially supporting Trion, go into the game with lowered expectations, and you'll still have a good amount of fun.

In reality, it is poorly programmed and rigged with paywalls and hackers. The game has good features. Sea combat in this game is the best that I've seen, however, any hope for a bit of enjoyment is ruined by the greedy developers. I will update if they decide to start accepting player feedback, but at the moment, it seems like they have their wads of money shoved firmly in their ears.

    1. Sea combat is good, however, like the rest of the game it is plagued with hackers. This brings me into the gear system.
    2. The gear system may sound interesting, you regrade items from basic all the way to legendary, which improves stats. Each regrade after unique has the ability to degrade the item back to arcane, and regrading any item is expensive. That means, that an item that has reached it's full level potential is VERY VERY valuable. To put it in perspective, I could buy a bow at normal level for 200g. If I regrade it all the way to max level, suddenly it becomes worth 20,000g (if it is a good bow to begin with). This sounds interesting right?
Well, it's broken. RNG Rolls are stored prior to when you actually take the risk. THAT MEANS: If you were to regrade, it would already know whether or not you were going to fail BEFORE you regraded. This is literally a stupid way for this system to work, and I can't justify why ANY developer would create it that way. There are hacks that allow you to see whether or not you fail or succeed, letting you choose the times where it says that you succeed. Therefore, hackers can always get their items to max level without risking degrade. This system applies not only to weapons and armor, but to boat components. Players with Hacks can now out manuever and out gun everyone else not only in 1v1, but at sea.
    3. Shakey business practice: XL Games has never released any information on the drop rates, or regrade rates, which illicites a feeling of sketchy practice. It is literally in the company's best interest to hide their abysmal RNG so that players continue to spend more and more money. Seeing how just about every single feature in the game is based on RNG, this can be problematic.
    4. Market place scams: XL Games Sells good and useful items on the marketplace for people willing to spend actual money or buy APEX using an obscene amount of gold. The problem? They always beef up the items on initial sale only to nerf them down the road. That means you may be sold on an item that you believe to be worthwhile only to have it be completely useless once they nerf it.
    5. Hacking not only affects regrades, but land placement and other features. Regrades are the most harmful to th e community because having fully upgraded gear means you can literally 1 hit anyone at max level. Yet, even though hacking is a problem, the stupid developers made it IMPOSSIBLE TO REPORT PLAYERS FOR HACKING. Whenever a player regrades, you can see if they got a success on global. Everyone watched a player achieve 4 successful regrades within the time it would normally take to use 1, instantaneously. We couldn't even report him for hacking because there is no feature for it.
    6. There are no GMs present, ever.
    7. Players are leaving in mass exodus
    8. Labor system is **** basically encouraging you to not play the game.
    9. f2p is a lie, it is p2w
    10. When leveling I was always told "The game opens up at 50" What it opens up to, is a bunch of events that funnel the entire player base into a certain area. The events are not exciting, they are just as monotonous as the rest of the game. It is one big player farm. You can farm in Hasla, or you can farm in the library. You are exposed to just how shallow the player pool is, when every day you see the same players doing the same events.

The money greedy developer RUINED a completely good concept. The Korean version of the game shows blatant favoritism. It's clear that XL games just wanted to port to the US so that they could milk us of all our money and then throw us in the garbage. At it's current state, people are leaving, and the ones that are staying are only doing so because they're attached to their current gear. I've talked to many players and they are ready to leave at the next failed update, which at this point is bound to happen. This game is a scam, and I can't recommend it to anyone. I had a lot of fun in alpha, but I was also blind to the shady business practices that the developers use. Trion got a screwy deal, with not being able to update... but they are equally at fault. This game needs to crash and burn so that something with better execution can take it's place. There is a need for a game that is similar to archeage, save the ****

Absolutely terrible release, they constantly cater to the NA servers (which are still suffering horribly) and leave the EU servers to ROT. Their newest 'fix' increased all NA server populations by 20%, and they only increased 1 EU server by 10%...why. We are all sat in 5-10 hour queues here, surely this warrants more capacity on ALL servers.

Assuming you get it to launch, it apparently interacts badly with anti-virus software. For me, it caused the built-in windows defender antimalware to freak out.

Once you get into the actual game, it has old timey MMO problems. There's kill stealing. That hasn't been acceptable since like the 90s. There's "kill 5 boars" quests. No one has ever liked those. The combination of kill stealing and "kill X of Y" is brutal. Dozens of people standing around in a field killing monsters as fast as they spawn, not getting 'credit'. It's stupid, it's unnecessary, it's not fun.

I didn't get very far before the game crashed, but the first two hours or so had combat that was the usual "you won't die unless you fall asleep" level of MMO difficulty. The trash mobs are not a threat, there's no risk, no danger, and no room to do interesting things with your character. It's not fun. It might get better later, but I'm not interested in playing for thirty hours to get to something that might be good.

A monumental failure of a launch, from a company experienced with MMOs, and cash shop systems that scream 'we care more about your money than we do about you.' Obviously a business has to profit, but if they lose their customers then where does that leave them? Nowhere is where.

The time between head start and launch simply wasn't enough time to come up with and execute a suitable solution to the problems that they faced. What they needed to do was have a longer open beta with a larger gap between it and launch to sort themselves out. I was unable to play during open beta and I'm sure I wasn't the only one, they needed a longer period to get a more accurate figure of a likely player base and more time to react to that figure. Poor management on their part entirely.

I strongly recommend people to try the game in a few weeks/months when this fiasco has been rectified, in the meantime I can only advise you stay away unless you are determined and patient.

The biggest defense they have with not adding more servers that I see other players give out is "But in two weeks, you'd have a ton of vacant servers". In this day and age, merges are easy, and so is spinning up a server if you're virtual (and if you're not, you're behind the curve). For a seasoned company like trion to have issues like this along with the obvious P2W aspect of housing only seems to point that they don't care about this game, nor are they going to be responsive.

    The bad:
    Dam near every thing else.
Crafting is made in to new kinda hell with things you can turn a profit on the items that make the item sell for more.
Quest are boring and on rails.
You can go anyplace in the world but you will be killed if your not at a good lev for being there.
To even fish you need a pole and bait you must buy them or craft and grow them and be a lev in growing and have land to do that.
You need land or gold to get anything and you need to pay for that.
The 120 class is a joke most are sooooo close to one another it will not mater and only a few are the "best" and the ones you will want to run in pvp.
The pvp is bad like why even have it bad. People are saying this is hardcore pvp. It is not. Die pop back up and fight some more. You lose almost nothing and gain almost nothing.
The game stutters fore seems like no reason.
    More gank than pvp.
forced pvp if you want do all the main quests.

And there is much more bad with the game but I can forgive all that.

What is driving people away is Trion. Too few too crappy servers log in times in the Hr. not a joke pay $150 and you can play in 1hr or 2 or 3 you get the idea. The preopen was one of the worst opens of any MMO I have been in in the last 15 years not the worst as some say but not to good. Sold founders starter packs for $150 then did not send them all out but sold new packs to people that are much much better and that was in a few days. What will they do in 90 days when the founders cash drys up? The land you need to farm, one of the big selling points of the game and some thing that is almost need to craft gone in 1Hr. of start. Good luck getting any unless you hit up a gold seller or the cash shop. Oh yes there are bots gold spammers and hacks running nuts in the game. Then there are the fan boys telling you every thing is grate when it sucks feels like talking to Trion. Ever try talking to some one who thinks they know every thing but is clueless about what you are talking about? That is Trion customer support. That and nailing you junk to a table are about as much fun.

But you can try it free and have a grate time for 30 days or so. Not worth the time or money to me. ESO is better to bad there is no glider.

I have been in contact with support about this, he/she asked me what was the problem so i explained to him/her about the bots and the hackers and such. He/she asked me for name's so they could sort out if it was true... Then he/she asked me some more stuff so i told the rest to him/her. After that he/she asked me to wait so they could write it down, i told them sure no problem. The reaction i got on that was: "Hey i can feel your frustration true my monitor please stop this pushing behaviour of yours, because this isn't making my job any more easy!! So calm down!!" So i told him/her: I'm sorry if i sounded like that, i didn't mean it that way, i only wanna help you out with this bot/hack problem. Then he/she told me: Youre not the only one trying to help like this, so please stop your frustration on me!! So i stopped talking.. After 15 min he/she still didn't say anything, so i asked if he/she was still there. He/she said: I think i have all the info, is there anything else i can do for you? So i asked what was gonna happen with the reported bots/hackers. He/she said: Time will tell my friend. And disconnected.

I was stuned... First my patron buff is broken like hell (and still is) and then i get somebody like this on support... Really trion... This is bad..

After today 4 of my friends decided to quit ArcheAge because of the lack on support trion is giving towards the players.. And the bot/hack problems with land and gold sellers...

I'm also thinking about quiting to be honest... Because this is not worth 13 euro's a month.. Not even 1 euro...

Really trion get your facts straight and get your ass on all the problems that are going on, you are losing players day by day!!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First I'd like to mention that this game is one of those F2P games that are not really F2P. If you do not atleast buy patron some essential features of the game are denied. Labor which is used for all non combat activities as well as opening loot bags will only be gained while you are online and only at half the speed of subscribers. As a subscriber I can tell you that even the increased labor regeneration is very limiting. Further alot of the items like labor potions, inventory expensions and tax certificates are almost necessary for a decent gaming experience. If you want to enjoy all aspects of ArcheAge at a more then after work intensity you can expect to pay the retail price of an average game for microtransaction items each month or feel forced to really streamline your gameplay for max use of you available resources. Patron remains a must have.

Adressing the actual game not the financial concept:
As so many games in the past this game falls short of the expectations. The world is horribly small. At this moment it only takes about 17min to walk (slowes mode of transportation) your continent from one end to the other. This would already be bad under normal circumstances but for ArcheAge being a sandbox MMO it is multiple times worse. Why is that?

Alot of the game revolves around crafting and resource production. The game offers some public farms on which you can grow a limited number of things, but those will never be enough to occupy you or provide sufficient supply. At this point the limited space kicks in and hampers your experience. The world is so small that hundreds of people running around it lead to most wild plants being harvested by random chance encounters within seconds of them maturing (which takes hours to days depending on the plant). As a result WoW, Rift or Wildstar like resource gathering is only possible for ore and stone since it is an exception considering respawn times. For plants and lifestock you will have to resort to growing it yourself. Usually this would be big pro creating an Eve like economy. In ArcheAge space limitations stunt the game. Almost all building lots (space to place your farms) were taken within ours of the servers opening. If you were not among those to grab your piece of the pie you are screwed. Building lots sell for ALOT. The most expensive I witnessed was 150$ in microtransaction items for a single housing lot. This leaves you with the last option: unprotected farming. This basically means you try to find a corner of the world where no one comes around and place your crops there. Those can be stolen by other players though. I have been hunting those farmes myself and I have to say: Even the most remote mountain areas which take real effort to access are traveled by scavengers at multiple encounters per hour 'causing very frustrating situations even for the most dedicated wild farmers.

Overall if you want sandbox play Eve. I dont play it but I have taken a look and it offers way more. The world of ArcheAge is a bucket compared to the sea Eve is.

As a final note. Not enough servers. Queue times of 8 hours or more to finally log in are currently the rule.

I read some rave reviews about this game and saw it praised as a great sandbox mmo. The reality is much different.

The first 20-30 levels of the game involves just questing through a typical mmo quest hub system. Nothing particularly bad or good about it. Just mundane. Combat is nothing to write home about, monsters have typical dumb mmo AI. Graphics are OK but not great.

The much vaunted crafting/gathering/farming system requires a huge grind and is limited by the "LP system". LP starts at zero and regenerates very slowly over time, especially for f2p players. You need these LP (labor points) basically to do anything other than fight or move your toon. And these LP are extremely limited. I found crafting even in non-crafting focused games like ESO to be much more rewarding/fun, and of course a game like minecraft or landmark blows it out of the water.

F2p players also cannot own land, which places them at a significant disadvantage, and locks them out of a key element of the game.

It is supposedly a pvp focused game, but pvp is quite restricted, and implemented in a bad way in some cases. For example if you enter enemy faction territory you cannot attack that faction. However, the enemy can attack you. However, if you are in a group and only one person in your group is attacked in enemy territory, only that one player will be able to fight back. you will basically just have to watch your friends die one by one without being able to do anything about it.

What I have said here is only the tip of the ice-berg. There are numerous hidden systems like this in the game waiting to frustrate you.

Paid 150 for the Archeum Founders pack, but was only able to play for 1/4 of the headstart period due to **** Trion and their queues and DDOS, all that bull. Now that it's release, I am still missing 60 out of my 90 day Patron statues and having to wait in 2 hour+ queue lines. Thanks Obama.

Would be a great game if you could play. refuse to up server capacity refuse to up server count and this makes it a 4 HOUR long with just to play the game! They also promised extra features for $150 and to date NONE of these items have been delivered. Pay to win at the finest!

The game itself would easily be a 7/10, if not for the publisher.

Trion is apparently very under-equipped to handle this game, and everything about how they're running it shows incompetence and poor planning.

It was actually very fun... for a while.

    My Cons:
The Labor system sucks the joy out of the game.
    The community is largely toxic.
Pay to win big time. (Gold spammers are in heaven.)
Hacking is really bad and obvious.
Devs don't care, Trion does not care.
Combat is boring and lackluster button mashing.
PvP is very unbalanced gear & skill wise.
The economy is terrible and constantly in huge swings.
    Few dungeons, limited rewards.
End game becomes a grind in a very limited area.
You cant customize your characters body, only the face/hair.
Crafted end game armor thats basically plate on a swimsuit. (and not even that great looking)
You cant dye a majority of the armor so your stuck on the color it comes in typically.
Farming takes up hours and hours and hours and is boring to tears.
The castles sieges are stupid, you pay a lot of gold for the right to siege (1 guild at a time) on a very limited twice a month basis. Guilds have been known to bid on their own siege rights.
The criminal justice system is basically a good way to get picked on and works backwards, punish them and their entire guild hunts yours down, they get out of jail in 10 minuets and keep your stuff.
    Sound is generic and repetitive.
Crafting is a gamble, grind, money, and labor sink. (Unless you pay to win!)

I would rather do just about anything else.

And then it all went down hill.
I'm incredibly annoyed with the end game content in this game. I understand that the game is based around trade routes, crafting and world pvp, but Archeage is lacking in pretty much every other department. (Besides graphics, because it's frikkin beautiful for an MMO).
I'm a PvPer myself, so as I was max level, I decided to hunt down the 'battleground NPCs'....
When I discovered that the only organised pvp available was 1v1 or 5v5, I was slightly disheartened. But no matter, I joined anyway and hoped for the best.
After about 30 1v1 matches I began to realise that I'd only seen about 5 different classes, and I was being destroyed by all of them without even casting a single spell myself.
This game is so incredibly unbalanced. If you aren't either a primeval, a dark runner, a spelldagger, a blighter or a paladin, you might as well go sit in a corner with your thumb up your ass and cry.
And to top it all off, even if you do win and somehow manage to amass a respectable amount of honor (currency for PvP items), the weapons that are attainable through PvP degrade after 44 days. Meaning you have to start all over again.
Everybody looks the same at level cap because the final questing hub is the only place to get a decent set of gear without spending weeks and weeks crafting garbage to get your skill level up to a standard where you can make something better.
There's a lot more for me to complain about and there shouldn't be. This game had so much potential, and I am incredibly disappointed.

So that issue isn't big anymore, the bigger issue then even the queues used to be is now the Botting and hacking. This game is advertised as open PVP and sandbox, it is neither of those things for most anyone. I'm not sure about all servers but on Salphira bots will take the housing before anyone else can or your jackass team mates will PK you(30+ zones) and try to take the house for them selves (regardless they'll still lose to the bots) couple this with teleporting bots who are wrecking the economy and a hacked chat system... this game is not worth the download time. The Combat system is old and archaic, we're talking [TAB] attack system and the PVP is pretty generic as well, I was a long time guild wars 2 player and I feel... this might just be why I find the PVP so lack luster... its just close to Guild War 2's PVP.. however Guild wars 2's is a bit better. the class system is pretty neat but not at all new, its nice I can blend a lot of things together but this class system is also limited at the same time, you'll need to equip a corresponding weapon to really benefit from classes... For example, If I go Heavy magic, and I also take healing... my healing will be limited if I don't take a 2h club and instead take a 2h staff or something of the sort.

I really don't recommend this game, there are just much better options.

I haven been playing since CBE and continue to play even now (I really don't want to waste my patron time)

There is a way to do it by downloading 3rd-party options or messing about with registries or something, but like hell if I'm going to bother. I didn't even finish the first quest. My experience with this game was four hours of downloading it, half an hour of installing it, five minutes in character creation, three minutes of going through the game options in minute detail, two minutes of idling while I googled where I could find the damn "invert mouse" option, and then quitting and writing this review.

This is the standard that all MMOs should be measured against.
Be what you want to be in a game that is too beautiful to bear.
Want to PvP? Yes. Want to farm? Yes. Want to trade? Yes. Want to own and decorate your house? Yes. Place your house in an organic, non-snap on way? Yes. Want to roleplay in a deep lore-set environment? Yes. Want to explore gorgeous fantasy scenery? Hell Yes.

Ignore the vocal toxic community who are all butthurt because they have unrealistic expectations of perfection in a game.

Archeage is a free to play game that the primary allure of this game is player housing.

    Houses cost 400USD or equivalent.

Other features include large scale naval raids on PvE and castle seiges.

Which is not available right now.

Strip all of that and you have something very similar to WoW, both in terms of clunky, old UI and its outdated graphics.

Eventually they released more servers, but those filled up just as fast and I was only able to get a housing spot and large farm spot in a dangerous open PVP ganking area. But that's ok, I thought. Level 25 shadowplay and you get stealth, so you won't get ganked while carrying your extremely precious lumber pack to your land in order to build. With the servers so crowded, competition for suitable trees was harsh, and it took maybe 20 hours of gameplay to get a single lumber pack. What I didn't count on, was the awful stability issues. Sometimes the game crashed 3 times in an hour. So there I was, carrying my precious lumber pack to build my farm, in stealth. Of course, it crashes, and my character gets ganked and the lumber pack gets stolen while I'm trying desperately to log back in.
Thanks TRION. Money, time, wasted. Don't think I'll be playing anymore. Can't get my money back, but I can avoid wasting more time.

Although, the game has some serious design flaws, regarding to PvP. One example is you can't help your allies if they're being attacked at enemy territory, all you can do is watch your friendlie die, how awesome and well designed is that!
Labor point gain and mount experience gain is poorly designed as well, it encourages player to be afk in game = more queues for f2p and some patrons.
Questing in this game is just plain boring, kill x amount of y, or obtain 5x of y items. And all the quests are like that, doesn't really keep me interested.
Dungeons aren't really difficult either, and most of them are just poorly done.
It's a korean game and seems to be rushed a bit too, would I recommend this game to others? Not anymore.
Did I mention problem with bots? Bots are flooding the chat with spam, and there are teleporting bots killing mobs& gathering ore, + trading.
Overall the quality of game is poor, or at least questionable.

Let's talk about some positive things for a change then!
The housing and farming was quite fun experience, farming is rewarding and worthwhile to do, and courages you to do some crafting or trading. Only bad thing about the housing spots are limited, even though there's free space.
Criminal system in this game is something you don't see in any other mmo. At least for my knowledge. You can plunder friendly people in neutral locations, or steal friendly crops in unprotected & illegal farms. If you get enough criminal points, you get sent to jail after you die by a player, and can be judged by other players.
Vehicles are awesome, getting your first boat with a harpoon was amazing, and you can do lots of things with it. There are lots of pets too, mounts to battle bets. Also pets and mounts have different abilities, so mounts aren't the same, so they offer you variety and that's a really good thing.
Also you get gliders which helps getting to certain areas and exploring. -Although exploring in this game doesn't seem to be as rewarding.

Positive things: Housing, crafting, farming, criminal system and mounts/vehicles.
Negative things: Overall quality is bad, or at least questionable. PvP, design flaws, questing, horrible dungeons.

In a nutshell, this game isn't that great, and would I recommend it to friends? No.

Reason being for my first point, group play in this game matters (Freedich-->Gilda). Numbers matter. Going solo in this game can be a frustrating experience unless you stick to only arenas.

Although ArcheAge offers instanced dungeons, they are lackluster for the most part. If you're a casual PvE player you will enjoy ArcheAge. Trading and fishing will be your sources of income. Farming, gathering, and planting are also helpful in generating materials for trade packs.

You will enjoy this game if...
    - You're a group oriented PvP player and willing to join a guild.
    - Able to devote time into research. Game can be complicated.
    - Casual PvE player with only an hour or two a day for farming/fishing/trading.
    - Have a PC able to run AA in all its' glory.

You will not enjoy this game if...
    - Solo player. Perhaps at first, but you will probably become bored.
    - Botters and hackers exist. Gold spam occurs as well.
    - Land larger than a 8x8 (smallest) is difficult to find unless you have gold to spend. Limiting the amount of crops you can plant.
    - Technical support is slow.

If you're not interested at this point, I recommend just playing WoW for a MMORPG.

If you are interested in still playing, I recommend subbing for a month and giving it a shot. Research builds, money making, etc, and join a guild. During the month your trade and fishing income will help pay for your next month.

    Best of luck

I'll start with a note about the current rating. The 3.6 user score is very misleading. If you check the dates for these reviews you can see they are almost all near the official release date with bugs, queues, and hacking. All of those initial issues have since been resolved.

Overall archeage is a good open-world MMO experience with a lot of different options in where and how you can

I would recommend anyone interested in open-world PvP try it out (emphasis on open world). However, like any "free to play" MMO and most MMOs in general, there is no even playing field. Higher geared players will have a big advantage over lower gear which is just a fact of the game design.

I wouldn't call the game mature yet because there is still a lot of aspects that could be greatly improved but so far they have done well to address the countless problems from queues, bots, hacking, inflation, and other issues. Unlike most other games I have played, the developers and publishers of Archeage are fairly responsive to the player base.

What ArcheAge presents, past the horror of the chilling launch, is an open world full of opportunities and challenges as we have not seen for a too-long time demonstrating that the real MMORPG, those based on persistence and interaction, have not disappeared.

Don’t let your judgment be clouded by other people’s opinions influenced by terrible server problems they encountered when ArcheAge was launched. It’s a really good, beautiful game. [Dec 2014, p.76]

ArcheAge is one of the best free-to-play games to be released this year, with a near endless amount of content awaiting eager adventurers.
