Really cool game, slow publisher. Trion Worlds, Inc. was not prepared for the launch of this game at all. Really low queues for practically two weeks, solutions for issues with Patron status (Payment method) delays 3 entirely days, and when they fix them, there's no refund of wasted days. Maybe they are good, but i have not this impression.

I had created a character from the beginning of the game, but I had never been able to play thanks to the endless queues. Today finally I connect, I try to redo it and, surprise, character creation is blocked on my server as a solution to the queues.
I have not had the chance to play it and I already hate it.

The majority of cutscenes are narrated by a woman trying to imitate an upper class British accent but not quite getting there, combined with her breathing out the lines like an asthmatic, removes any emotion or
weight from cutscenes. The naming scheme is also ridiculous with main story elements getting labels such as Aranzeb and Dahuta (pronounced da hoota), which when narrated has me laughing at most scenes. Which is a shame because the story itself is alright.

Basically Trion had two jobs for a game that has already been created and released; fiddle around with the game mechanics to suit their micro transactions and translate the game for a western audience. I can't comment on firsthand experience but judging from other reviews they have failed to foster a healthy f2p environment where people are happy to pay for skins and other items that didn't effect gameplay but rather the amount of time invested. Judging by the $150 founder packs that were up for offer they have instead decided to go down the pay to win route in an attempt to get as much money as possible.

In short it is still possible to enjoy Archeage, as a free player, despite it's below average localisation and blatant monetisation. Just don't encourage bad business practices by financially supporting Trion, go into the game with lowered expectations, and you'll still have a good amount of fun.

The auction house is ACESSIBLE FOREVER after u buy it, and it's not that expansive. Public farms still full, but if u search well, u can find spots to plant your trees. And if u need more space, use the farm of a friend, he can invite u to his Family and u'll be able to plant there. The game is good, funny, and Trion is trying to solve all issues as soon as possible. U don't need to spend anything, just test it ;) u'll have a lot of fun. Expand

More like ArcheAged, the game is dead before your queue ends. I wonder how many hours the devs will be roaming the streets to be able to pay back all the founder packs that were so disgustingly overpriced.
I can pay less for runescape and have the same fun, dont even have to download it.

I prefer the WildStar housing were you could do a lot more with it and it was instanced off though I do get what ArcheAge is going for with having a sandbox. My main problem with sandbox MMOs is always the same. People abuse the sandbox system ruining the fun for people.

Overall ArcheAge is a fun game to try out for a while, it's pretty, and you can spend hours just exploring. But it's not an MMO I'll stick around to see what max level is like, at least not for now.

Can't give a fair review since I spent most of the time in a queue or disconnecting.

As far as I've seen it's the same as other MMOs even worst than others that I've played.

Voting 0 for the frustration and hoping that other MMOs that might come in the future don't make the same mistakes.

The game is stunning and a fresh breath of air in the MMO genre. It offers freedom that no other mmo outside of Eve or Ultima Online has. The class system is wide open. The crafting and trading in this game is what inspires the awesome PVP. The player ran economy goes far beyond what a simple auction house does in every other MMO.

With all that said, the server stability and queue times

Housing and Farming, a truly in depth and immersible trading system, an intelligent well thought out and sophisticated (yet surprisingly simple to understand) PVP system with Pirates; Crime Points, Jails, separate continents, war zones, trade routes, treasures and more. Crafting, different currency's, flying, all sorts of different mounts and pets, an amazing selection of different live stock, trees and farming goods, ships of all sorts and so so much more!

This game is easy to pick up, but very hard to master! Making it something to work for and enjoy along the way. One thing I have loved about this game is that it gives you so many options to choose your path and create your way... Whether that be through trade routes, renting or selling land, being a pirate, PVP, stealing or committing crime, questing, grinding, crafting, stealthy missions or simply taking on adventure you can become somewhat unique.

I guarantee after finishing your early quests and becoming familiar with how the game works you will enjoy yourself for countless hours.

I must note though, this game is definitely more enjoyable with friends and I recommend gathering up as many as possible, whether they are new to MMOs or not!

Ok so here's the thing - in the alpha and beta it wsa fun - everyone was messing around and the potential to 'do anything' was explored and was exciting.

This game explodes the MMO grind like nothing else into some fun stuff, but it's a completely player based economy. At face value this is good, but what it means is the servers have to have decent numbers of people on them for the game to be viable, and so Trion deliberately don't have enough servers so as not to go through the surge and crash in player numbers - this means even if you paid over £100 for your founder's pack it's a 3 hour wait minimum just to get on.
Additoinally all the servers are full - you need a strong guild to get anywhere in the game, and so if your friends are already established on another server - you won't get to play with them.

Paying players can purchase land and build their own home there - which becomes a focus of one of the styles of play.
Great! All the land went in the first week! This means if you're thinking of starting out now - you'll need to wait until thep layer populatoin crashes off for a bit to register on the server, once the game is dying.

This Game has promise, but it is at heart a Korean grind fest with no shortcuts, and the ability to fully explore the game is precluded by having to log on to the servers (that don't let you alt-TAB out to do other things while you wait) and que fo 8 hours. As an online MMO Que simulator I would score this a 10. It's possible that somewhere in there, once the atrix has you there might be a game to play which could have a good score too. However, when developers have already given salient and unignorable lessons in how to set up ap layer economy usigng just one server, such as in EVE, to build a game arount this principle as a core tennet and then spread it out over a bunch of servers like WoW or that god-awful star wars MMO the old republic (apart from hutball... huttball was great..) is just a big mistake in my opinion.
I intend not to play this any more.

This game had potential, but turned out to be quite bad in the end.

This game doesn't seem to be P2W .Subscription just makes things quite a bit faster, and allows you to own property. It's acceptable to me. Although, the game has some serious design flaws, regarding to PvP. One example is you can't help your allies if they're being attacked at enemy territory, all you can do is watch your friendlie die, how awesome and well designed is that!
Labor point gain and mount experience gain is poorly designed as well, it encourages player to be afk in game = more queues for f2p and some patrons.
Questing in this game is just plain boring, kill x amount of y, or obtain 5x of y items. And all the quests are like that, doesn't really keep me interested.
Dungeons aren't really difficult either, and most of them are just poorly done.
It's a korean game and seems to be rushed a bit too, would I recommend this game to others? Not anymore.
Did I mention problem with bots? Bots are flooding the chat with spam, and there are teleporting bots killing mobs& gathering ore, + trading.
Overall the quality of game is poor, or at least questionable.

Let's talk about some positive things for a change then!
The housing and farming was quite fun experience, farming is rewarding and worthwhile to do, and courages you to do some crafting or trading. Only bad thing about the housing spots are limited, even though there's free space.
Criminal system in this game is something you don't see in any other mmo. At least for my knowledge. You can plunder friendly people in neutral locations, or steal friendly crops in unprotected & illegal farms. If you get enough criminal points, you get sent to jail after you die by a player, and can be judged by other players.
Vehicles are awesome, getting your first boat with a harpoon was amazing, and you can do lots of things with it. There are lots of pets too, mounts to battle bets. Also pets and mounts have different abilities, so mounts aren't the same, so they offer you variety and that's a really good thing.
Also you get gliders which helps getting to certain areas and exploring. -Although exploring in this game doesn't seem to be as rewarding.

Positive things: Housing, crafting, farming, criminal system and mounts/vehicles.
Negative things: Overall quality is bad, or at least questionable. PvP, design flaws, questing, horrible dungeons.

In a nutshell, this game isn't that great, and would I recommend it to friends? No.
    Korean games, not even once.

A list of gripes are, no land available as one guy with 4 or 6 accounts has grabbed land at the very start of the game release is is extorting the player base to pay for unfinished houses (not complete houses mind you) or zones and having this multiplied by 10 fold makes for inefficient land hogging and extortion. Land which is probably the main reason why people purchase patron status have to wait 1-3 weeks which is half a month to even consider the prospect of owning property should they find that someone has stopped paying tax; which makes for an unhappy customer. Next up is the game's poor optimization, when you have tons of people fighting in one area especially in the ocean the game gets extremely laggy with invisible characters spawning 20 seconds too late only to find yourself dead and unable to control your character because of it with frame rates jumping from 4 to 40 at random even with a decently powerful GPU. Queue times still seem to plague the game, especially for free players (as if they haven't had it bad enough with no labor points to do anything) wait from 3 - 6 hours which eliminates the prospect of new players wanting to subscribe as it just leaves a bad taste in the player's mouth knowing that 70% of the game's features are locked out and you can't try them unless you take the risk and shell out the money to find out there is not land available. And lastly the game's focus is on interaction with fellow players, trading, and fighting which is no where near complete. Wanna hire a farmhand to pick your crops? He just made off with both your money and your plants. Wanna hire someone to convert your logs into chopped lumber? He just made off with your lumber. The trade function has not been tweaked to allow players to trade goods and have them trade back the refined product and yet another game *cough (WoW) allows you to trade an item for enchant without him swiping it away. Now is it a horrible game? No, no it is not however the lack of "love" and effort from the devs to polish the game has made the game much more frustrating than it has to be. One feature that could ease the pain of patrons with no land would probably be the guarantee of ONE house plot, as houses do not effect the market demand / goods in fluctuation (and mainly so we have a roof over our heads as we cry about how we do not have farmland) Come back in about few months and check back with the community, otherwise please do not god forbid try the game with patron or free otherwise. - Playing this game as a free player is just ridiculous. Just to mention some of the 'limitations': you can't list an item on broker, you can't buy land on which to farm which is what this game seemingly revolves around, a serious cut on labor points (needed to do all sorts of things such as crafting or gathering) and many, many more.

    - You try waiting for news from the developers working on a fix only to get a poor excuse ("We want to be open with everyone: Yes this is a DDoS, and yes we're all over it. Please stay tuned for updates".)

Don't take my suggestion and ignore this review. Go try the game yourself and have all the fun I coudn't get.

(Disclaimer: I only managed to log twice, once during Beta and once after release each time waiting for a couple of hours to get in. Tried later on after launch with no luck - 5k queue and disconnect as soon as I reached 2k or something place in the queue which happened more than once.)

The game is full of AFKers, gold resellers, and bots/hackers.

Old servers are fully crowed and controlled by few big guilds. New servers have mostly f2p and have only few guilds. As no guild means no end-game, these new servers are already called ghost servers.
Farming is “I plant, I water, I pick-up 30 min later”. Do you want to spend your time like that?

To maximize a skill, you need 50,000 LP. f2p players gain 5 LP every 5 minutes connected. You need to stay connected 70 days (24/7) to maximize 2 skills. For example, one mining node adds 10 LP, so you need to farm 5,000…

Still want to play? Please be my guest.

The actual game looks great but at times also seems to lack detail. The levelling is theme park-ish and the first 20 levels is kind of like a tutorial introducing you to the mechanics of the game.

To be honest the levelling is to lvl 30 is quite tedious but the game really opens up after that. The patron system is how the game is meant to be played(15$ a month sub)
It allows land ownership, labour point regen the way it’s meant to be (Labour points are used in basically every part of the game, especially crafting) and most importantly you don’t share queue times with Free-to-Players ,enabling you to log on immediately.

From a paying person standpoint, this is a great game, from a non paying standpoint, you won’t get everything out this game, and why should you.Cheapskates need not apply here.

The only bad part where this game is dying is because of greed of company called TRION World. They just squeezing money from it's loyal players and even after that not providing them better service and support. People bought 150$ packs called Founder, some people got it some don't. Some people bought PATRON Subscription monthly based but they can't utilize it properly because of 1-7 hours standing in QUEUE, if a player is not a patron subscriber he might have to wait like upto 17 hours in queue to be able to play game for 1 hour and then Server Restart or random Crashes. Too many gold spammers taking over slots and loyal players stuck at QUEUE screen it's laughable. Not one GM or in-game mod exists to take care of that. They use script to kick AFKers which is not working 100% also so daily restart late night of server (MMO private servers do that never saw any officials doing it).

The Server queue, poor customer service and Greed is killing this USA English version of the game. Russian players have their own client/server at mail.ru but they are coming to TRION to play the game which is taking necessary spots for NA and EU region. Nothing against russians but if a country has the game in their own language it's common sense to go there. Trion will kill this game definitely if they don't change their approach. They didn't even compensate non-patron or Patron players or even Founder packs players. Highly immature, unprofessional way to run servers. Not acceptable.

There is nothing in this game that's pay-to-win and anyone that tells you differently does not know the definition of pay-to-win. Crippling free players and making them go through ridiculous loops in order to progress is an example of pay-to-win; not labor boost potions (that have a 12 hour cooldown) and patron status that give paying customers more labor points that you yourself already regenerate at a moderate speed and the former of which you can buy with in-game currency! Not to mention, everyone has a 2000 labor point cap so it's not like you can even stack them up even if you had thousands of dollars to spend.

I have no idea why all these people are lashing out at this game (maybe because servers are queued up at the moment) but this game is without a doubt the best mmo in the industry right now. There's so much more emphasis on player interactions and the world than any other mmo has to offer at the moment, and it has been a blast to play. It really is the mmo I've been waiting for. I would have rated it a 9/10 if not for all these idiots that haven't even played the game and are slapping a 0 rating on it for no god damn reason. Do yourself a favor and disregard all these nonsensical negative reviews, and play the game and see for yourself.

So I will simply state my own reason for not purchasing a pack along with an observation: As a gamer with no interest in being ganked while trying to craft and farm, I did not even attempt to purchase a head start pack in order to claim a bit of the very scarce land that is located in the safer zones. I saved myself some money because I knew perfectly well that all of the land would be snapped up by those lucky few who successfully eluded the launch queues and that they would probably be gold farmers and large guilds speculating in hopes of future resales to everyone else. And since I had that figured out months ago, I refuse to believe Trion devs could not have predicted this fiasco and done something to stop it. Instead they allowed the game to launch knowing that housing could be cleverly placed by speculators in such a way as to hog up large swathes of land. Therefore I can only conclude that Trion devs allowed this to happen because Trion has a profit angle in it somewhere. Perhaps they're desperate. So desperate they're willing to crash and burn their reputation. Rift is dying, Defiance was stillborn, and to rub salt in the wounds, ArcheAge, which at least offers some unique features and created a lot of buzz, especially among the PvP crowd, isn't even Trion's baby.

Cons: HUGE queues (3-8 hours, from shorted wait to longest for me), nonstop errors of one sort or another - sometimes related to gameplay or other times attributed to billing/payments, poor labor system which encourages people to AFK in game and hold up queues, boring repetitive quests, poorly written story, lack of land for paying customers to place farms/houses, no customization for the body whatsoever.

    Other thoughts:
Lovely game in terms of actual gameplay and the farming is fantastic, but the issues with long queues (3-10 hours, sometimes even more), nonstop errors, disconnects, etc.. I paid for patron status on the day it came out, didn't go through until the 20th after going through all the payment methods. Just one problem after another, one look at the forums, and you will see why. I tried cancelling my sub and resubbing, then I wasn't able to cancel because of more errors. Still not completely fixed it seems. F2P is not very viable if you want to become a serious crafter or own land/farms, and the labor system is poorly designed as F2P doesn't get enough to do much of anything unless they afk and stay logged in the game to accrue more.

All in all, I would recommend it, but maybe in a month or two with the hope that some issues will be fixed. I think it could be a wonderful game, but Trion isn't doing very well to keep their customers happy!

I tried every day since head start and have waited hours in queue just to give up in frustration after waiting 3-4 hours and seeing 1500 people still ahead of me. I can't imagine how people who have subscribed to this game must feel. They have to feel even more cheated than I do. It's such a shame that Trion has utterly ruined this game and their reputation by such a horrible launch and screwing founders out of their money. They have done nothing to fix the queue issues that started during head start and have not responded to any of my customer service issues.

My patron status means nothing, I obviously missed the land rush, and I'm unwilling to wait hours to play a game I paid for. Trion will never get another dime from me or waste any of my time. Never again.

On top of it all, when I tried to ask a live agent on Trions website if I could get a refund I was placed in a 4 hour queue to talk to someone. I only tried this option because they have never responded to one of my tickets I've opened. Way to go with the queues Trion.

I feel like Trion lied to me and hasn't delivered on what the product promised at all. They will fail with this game which is very unfortunate as it had so much promise.

From my 15 hours of playing it seems like a great game, but that fact you can't play is its downfall. When the game is like 6-12 months old ill give it another try,

Assuming you get it to launch, it apparently interacts badly with anti-virus software. For me, it caused the built-in windows defender antimalware to freak out.

Once you get into the actual game, it has old timey MMO problems. There's kill stealing. That hasn't been acceptable since like the 90s. There's "kill 5 boars" quests. No one has ever liked those. The combination of kill stealing and "kill X of Y" is brutal. Dozens of people standing around in a field killing monsters as fast as they spawn, not getting 'credit'. It's stupid, it's unnecessary, it's not fun.

I didn't get very far before the game crashed, but the first two hours or so had combat that was the usual "you won't die unless you fall asleep" level of MMO difficulty. The trash mobs are not a threat, there's no risk, no danger, and no room to do interesting things with your character. It's not fun. It might get better later, but I'm not interested in playing for thirty hours to get to something that might be good.

While this is offered as a "free-to-play" game, the crafting/gathering system is broken at its core, the servers are unstable, the queues are horrendous, and their accounts and services are essentially inactive.

The common staples for crafting (such as wood and cloth) cannot be planted in the F2P's public farms, so you are forced to create farms out in the world. This may come as a challenge to find secret locations, but players scour the far reaches of the world and atop the mountains outside of the map. They will sit there to either uproot (destroy) your crops or to steal them right after the timer shows when they're done growing. Crafting and everything else requires "Labor Points" AKA LP. LP is gained by playing over time (P2P can generate some while offline) and makes people try to find ways to idle but not get kicked, further filling up the server.

The server instabilities can range wildly depending on your case. Some players are permanently banned from chat and get instantly kicked upon login for doing things like guild recruiting in previous sessions. Some players get kicked because their character's name looks suspicious. Others chain-disconnect for no reason, even while in queue to get into the game (there's no saving your spot in line.) If you do get disconnected, there is sometimes a 10-minute grace period to get back in, to include load times.

Let's talk about the queue system. People AFKing on the server are taking up server slots. Bots are taking up server slots. F2P players are waiting 12-24 hours to get in to play, with it sometimes resetting their spot in queue from random disconnects. P2P players get priority, but still need to wait 30 minutes to a few hours to get in, again with random disconnects mixed in there. The headstart that they promised was a few-day event which had these queues, of which it was a varied outcome of 100% of the server's land being taken, some people getting 0 hours of play time due to no fault of their own, and others not even able to log in due to the poor accounts system. The queues have caused people to lose their houses, their land, and their farms due to not being able to log in to pay their taxes. Land is a finite item on a server, of which is more valuable than gold.

The accounts system is broken to the point of which people who have paid for a service have still not received their service. A large portion of players who are founders have yet received their founder items. Patrons who paid their monthly subscription have not received Patron status in-game, but are still billed for it. "Patron" status is a major issue, where it was given and taken away from random players, to include F2P players. So, F2P players were able to buy land illegally, P2P players lost their land, and everything reeks of incompetence on part of the developers.

Additional issues exist throughout the game. Since this is a KR/RU port to EN/EU, there are already hacks right after release to include instant teleporting for trade runs. Inflation has already skyrocketed. None of the NPC voiceacting is in English, so I hope you're Korean. Class viability is a minor issue, since you'll be farmed in PvP starting around 30 by level 50's. There is no questing after around level 30. You are thrown out into the world to do farming, crafting, or grinding.

There are quite a few people waiting the 3000 queue to play in different servers which doubles my queue time for them.

Apart from that, this is the most fun mmorpg I have played!!! There are many great features, starting: 'Be who you want'. You can be who you want, there are over 100 classes due to mix and match, when you reach level 10 and have selected 3 skillsets you will be given a class that you are. For example Archer, Battle~(warrior) and sorcerer will make something different from archer, shadowplay and occultism. There is more to 'be who you want to be' than that. The game offers many different jobs, you can be a jury, farmer, ferryman and charge people money for your services! That's not it though, there is a lot more.

Next, combat! I think the combat system is the typical button mashing abilities but that gameplay does not bore me, the moves you pull of are satisfying in a way for, some of them look flashy and scream out to the mob 'You're going to be my B***h'. There are many skillsets so there will be MANY different abilities and each character you have will be different.

You can also fly in this game and have mounts! Unlike in many games you get them pretty early and the first one for free! There are items for mounts too and you have the ability to level them (Which leads to people running in circles, increasing queue time). You also get a glider, free of charge and it's really great to see this in a game, you get it early, for free and it looks magnificent, gliding through the air.

Do not let the negativity blind you, the barrier for the queue may be a strong one, but when you are past it, the world which will unfold in front of you is a beautiful one.

Trion can not open a massive amount of servers due to the fact there is not instanced land. The land is an important part of the economy, and is limited in how much there is, land is a commodity. Trion can not just flood servers full of land into the game for it's initial rush. If Trion was to do that, the land would be purchased, and then in the future, when the honeymoon/rush if over and server merges had to happen, some people would lose the land. Remember, land is high value in ArcheAge. To lose your land would be a huge blow to a player who had worked hard to get and keep their land.

The people whining are those in a queue, which I admit is long at this time, and to impatient to wait to enter the game.

Those who are Patrons (subscribers who pay the monthly fee for the game), do get priority over those who are F2P. There is still a queue even for Patrons as the game is in it's FIRST week of release.

ArcheAge is a fantastic game undeserving of these bad angry people who are upset they have to wait in a queue for a new MMO.

The CS has been lacking, and yes, there have been issues, the queue being one of them, BUT, the game is really good.

It has an old school feel to it where you really feel like you have accomplished something when you finish a job. The open world farming and trade runs where anything can happen bring a much needed breath of excitement and spontaneity to what has become a very stagnant MMO scene.
Standard tab-targetting combat, the customizable builds bring enough depth to keep it interesting though. Think TBC era WoW with the 3 talent trees, except each tree is an entirely different class.
There's a lot in this game, and everything is very deep. There's a strong sense of risk/reward in a lot of what you do. For example, you can craft trade goods in most any zone, but they cannot be sold in that same zone, you must travel to a different zone to sell. The farther you travel the more you can sell your goods for. But you also increase your chance of getting robbed by other players during the journey. It takes knowledge of trade routes, timing, market knowledge, etc to decide what kind of trades you want to make. Help from friends never hurts either.
You can raise your own mounts, and different mounts server different purposes, eg a donkey for carrying trade goods.
These little details really bring the game world to life and make you feel like the world is much bigger than you as the player, and there is always something to learn and do better at.
If you're tired of the tame string of recent MMOs that have come out and want something with a bit of a ever present sense of danger in the air, AA might be the one you've been waiting for.

    - Overloaded player housing areas, if your a new patron you can't even find a plot to drop a farm nevermind a house.

    - lack of foresight on player demand. I can understand under forecasting a little bit however whoever seriously undershot the demand really needs a lesson on how to properly forecast demand and load. I'm sure this has cost someone a job somewhere in the line.

However there are a some positives. The quests are fun and the graphics and play style are sweet. When they add more servers this game I'm sure this will become a decent game. Until this happens expect a lot of justified player complaints.

Recommendation: If your thinking of getting this game or buying a patron status wait a few months. If your already playing like me, hang in there and pray.

8 hour queue for free to play players. Game is horribly optimized and crashes often. Queue drops again after a crash. Basically impossible to play unless you subscribe (it lets you avoid the queue). And even if you subscribe, chances of it working properly are slim, at least at the current state of the game. Giving it a zero because it’s the worst mmo launch I have seen in the past 5 years.

I haven't put a dollar into the game, and a few friends and I are having a blast leveling. The quests at times feel like they just hand xp everywhere, other times offers variations of things to do, places to see. The places to see are absolutely gorgeous. Never a dull area to look at.

I've touched on crafting, and its complex. Haven't seen a system like this since Star Wars Galaxies "Nilla". This brings in a sense of achievement when leveling the profession you desire to become. I've contemplated the very odd life of "maybe all i want to do is own a farm and farm for other players." This really sucks you into the atmosphere of the game. Granted to do this, it is going to cost a little real cash. However, $ didnt stop me from playing masterpiece games of old such as Ultima Online, which had very similar design qualities as Archeage, only with a sub. I paid that $15 sub for 4 years, and all I did in that game was bake.

If you are looking for a very immersive world, with great combat gameplay, a deep level of customization and a lot of pretty "oo's" and "aw's" then Archeage is the title you've been waiting for. The only gripe I have for the game is not being able to move through other players while questing. I do get stuck in a crowd a lot, but its easy to get out with a glider. Just a minor annoyance. Archeage stands as a testament to the original MMO models: "sandbox" with other people. 9/10.

I couldn't even log-in because over all the servers had a queue of at minimal 400 players and numbers were dropping ever so slowly. I had to get up early in the morning anyhow and then I was able to log-in to one of the least populated servers.

I was really turned off by the character generation. Of all the many choices you can make, you can't get away from making your character look like some fey Asian variant. I got nothing against Asian's but I just don't like being forced to play a MORPG where my character has to look like one. I'd like the flexibility to make my character look like any race known or otherwise.

Then in game it's not very impressive at all. Like I've seen it all before. Overly saturated colors, bland scenery, giant invasive nameplates, no shadowing, cheap look and feel, etc.
It looks like the same bland Asian MORPGs I played ten years ago, except now the download was 9GB instead of 1GB so they can add Speedtree grass and trees, and some shaders to the otherwise same dull environment.
Also all the NPCs look unimaginatively Asian where I feel like I'm playing in an Asian version of Disneyland, also right on the get go the game complete with so much Gold seller spam you barely read any chat at all.

The best thing about it that it uninstalls well.

Trion was told about this months ago, and even all their sympathizes were told this as well. Get on their case and don't encourage them. Nope wouldn't listen.

Unfortunately offline labor regeneration is going to have to be equal to online if they want people to stop AFK'ing in game, there is no way around it. If they want to keep the labor system, they will just have to suffer the consequences with exploits.

Then the issue of staying logged in the character select screen all day while your at work. Why could the company not foresee this?

Anyways, your money is better spent elsewhere. This game is not F2P, it's basically a trial version until you drop cash. The more cash you drop, the more dominating you'll be in game.

What will not be forgotten is Trion's bludgeoning attempt to force all negative threads associated with the schmozzle they very loosely called launch into one convenient to manage (and hide) location and the absolute lack of any discourse by it with its unhappy fan base, particularly those who have paid for the privilege. Perhaps the cold as ice forum mod who quickly and efficiently jack-booted any form of dissent, even if that dissent was in the form of a mere question, into a single forum thread should have been replaced with someone from the company actually telling people what Trion was going to do about the problems? Information would have gone a long way here. It would have at least assured people that Trion was trying to help, actually gave a crap, and would have also demonstrated a level of respect for their paying clientelle.

The game itself is quite beautiful, and the mechanics of trade risk and reward and PvP actually encourage teamwork. So there is a lot to like about the game. It is this beauty and thoughtfulness alone that has led me to give the game any sort of score at all. But if you are thinking about playing it, think again. With multiple hour waiting periods, numerous bugs and glitches (for a period of time half my hotbar skills were unable to be used), and A LACK OF TRANSPARENCY AND SEEMING AVOIDANCE OF ACCOUNTABILITY BY THE HOSTING ENTITY, I would strongly, very very strongly, advise you to stay away. The game is gorgeous and gliding is just fantastic. Enemies, animations, the environment, lighting, all look really good, shiny, and realistic. Each zone is unique but the flow is natural for the most part. It does have roads and "passes" that you generally enter a zone with. BUT it doesn't take too much effort to find a pass up a mountain and glide off from the top to your destination in the next zone, and NO Loading screens.

Crafting is huge, the best gear is crafted and can be purchased with large sums of gold. Making gold is your key to success in this game (as opposed to raiding in most other MMOs). You can literally get the best gear by focusing all of your efforts on becoming the best fisherman ever and selling your wares to then buy the best gear with gold. No other game affords this freedom in the same way. This world feels realistic, despite being virtual and though limitations (Labor) exist and you may have to go through a bit of grinding to get to where you want to be, it will pay off.

Some features that I don't like would be generic quests, although I am used to these and it really is just an excuse for combat. This is not a PvE centered game though, I am level 35 and haven't done a single quest in 5 levels. The Combat is fun ( it's tab target) but I have come to realize that tab target is my preferred combat style. Aiming isn't something I find to be fun in general. That being said, it is different than say, WoW, due to the complexity of the Combo system. The Combo system and slightly longer cooldowns will require more thinking on the fly as to how to best use the skills available to you. It adds an apsect of "Tact" that is missing from certain tab target rpgs where you constantly rotate the same skills.

I could go on about the awesome farming, Trial system, piracy, Trade pack runs (intense), class building and others. The point is, while this game won't be for the instant gratification crowd, nor will it be for Action lovers. This is still very much an RPG, but one that excels in playing the role YOU want to play, not the role the game has designed for your class or profession. Player interactions are the end game, which leaves much replay-ability in it's design. You won't get sick of running the same dungeons over and over, because your experience will never be the same each time you login.

ArcheAge as a game is something completely new, yet very recognizeable. One can follow the good old quest hubs along with instances, groups and eventually arenas, like in many other MMO's. Or you can do whatever you want to once the tutorial is completed, and this kind of freedom (building houses, joining pirate guilds, becoming an outlaw or even prison escaping) is an immersion few other MMORPG's has succeeded to achieve. Guild Wars 2 tried, but was more a theme park pretending to be a sandbox, with no real "randomness" to the system at all.

This game is moreso not more pay to win than other games. Yes, you can buy mounts, just like in other MMO's. Yes, you have the possibility to buy potions that replenish your "labor points" (used for crafting and the likes) if you want to. That is IF you spend the majority of time crafting rather than pvp'ing, exploring and questing. There is therefore no real way to pay for "winning" as there is nothing to win.

The biggest gripe of disappointment comes from how Trion managed the game, the servers and how the paying customers were, and still are treated, which is totally justifiable. A terrible launch of a fantastic game, by a company I did NOT expect such utter greed from.

Give ArcheAge a chance and I guarantee you will NOT be disappointed. That is, if you make it past the 4+ hour queue.

After the glut of endless WOW clones that force you into narrow mazes and dangle carrots you can't avoid, Archeage comes along and gives the player the freedom to explore at their own pace in any way they like. You can choose to follow the scripted story, but you certainly don't have to. You can build your character to suit your style of play in a system that offers huge customization, choosing from a large number of classes, three of which you can combine to create one of some 120 different classes, each with unique underlying skills that make it possible that your character won't be just like anyone elses.

It's true that right now there are large lines waiting to get into this game. Until enough servers are brought on line to handle the games huge popularity, this is the games largest problem. The claims that the game is pay to win is strictly the opinion of the under ten year old crowd. "Winning" in this perfectly open sandbox with a huge world to explore is the perspective of someone immature and too slow witted to understand that a game like this is not "won:- it is a world to live in and explore and enjoy. This sandbox is about the journey.

There are several aspects of Archeage that raise it up above all other modern MMOs for me as a long time player of these things. As a gaming conceptual designer myself, I look for a game design that offers creative, thinking choices. I don't want to be told what to do, I want to decide what direction I go, myself.

    1. While the game has an excellent, deep class creation system and a fine combat system for pvp, that is only a small fraction of "what there is to do" in this game.

    2. The system's economy, crafting system and natural environment used to acquire raw materials are the best I've very seen in a PC game. There is so very much to create, and there is such a variety of types of crafting that it's a whole game unto itself.

    3. The water/seafaring elements and the air travel offer the best looking and feeling environments of any PC game I've played. Finding undersea shipwrecks and flying onto otherwise unreachable peaks have never felt so adventuresome in any other game. The simple amount of custom detail in the world is beyond belief.

    4. Cities are truly remarkable in the attention to details. This game is a roleplayer's paradise, as it'squite possible to get lost in the endless streets, all of which have custom shops, vast numbers of nocs ad even explorable rooftops with interesting and varied architecture. When I was sent on a quest to find some hidden harpy nesting areas up in the city rooftops, it felt like a real mystery, with hundreds of rooftops and ledges and nooks and crannies. Capturing this sense of real space up above the action areas below made the city seem remarkably real. It's very sad that so many players rush through the quests in their mad race to try and reach level 50 that they miss the entire point of the journey- and those are exactly the people blabbering about this beautiful masterpiece of a game being a "pay to win". Winning in ArcheAge simply requires slowing down, opening your eyes and looking at the world around you.

    5. The world is truly magnificent to look at. Where a game like Skyrim has moments that are pretty, everything about ArcheAge is not only beautiful, but also aesthetically tasteful. The characters have grace when they stand. They not only look fantastic in a photo, but they move with a wonderful, realistic sense of romantic realism, which Skyrim lacked. It's not just the technology- it's also endless attention to being perfect on the part of the designers. It's good taste. The mountains in ArcheAge seem real, and they don't feel like they are blocking off areas- they seem natural.

    6. There are no artificial boundaries. You can see everywhere. There aren't transitions. Some places are crystal clear and you can see for miles, but some islands are jungle like and thick with mists so you can't see ten feet. It's wonderful.

    7. There is no lag on my medium quality machine. I don't know how this is possible, but this game runs perfectly- in all it's beauty and with a whole world to explore at the same time there are thousands of others on too. It is a remarkable achievement in this regard.

    8. Housing is robust and not an afterthought. There are tons and tons of furnishings. Much you can make. There is a whole island where you can buy stuff for your house, and like old UO from ages ago, land is at a premium, making housing valuable.

ArcheAge is designed for creative, thinking players.

The game itself would easily be a 7/10, if not for the publisher.

Trion is apparently very under-equipped to handle this game, and everything about how they're running it shows incompetence and poor planning.

If you bought the founder packages I really hope that you can get your money back because little of what was promised has been delivered. You have to be a Patron to be able to own land. I attempted to log in as soon as the servers went live for headstart but was unable to (Due to the massive influx of players) until 15m after launch and that was just to log into the queue of 1.5 hours. So I ended the day with 8 hours played and 59 gildas with no place to put down a house. Granted I had one of the larger starter houses the "Thatched Farmhouse" but all places except some of the far flung PVP areas were claimed. I did get to place an 8x8 farm which is the smallest you can own.
So paying for Patron status did me no good in that respect.
Labor is an resource that you get for being in game (Which lets you build/craft/plant open drop items). If you are a Patron you get double the amount of the f2p and you get it offline at the same rate as the f2p get it while on. You can also purchase a potion that gives you 1000 labor. After you take one you can't use another for 12 hours. Not really a big deal since f2p can buy them on the AH for 4-8g.
You can use public farms to grow just about anything.
Gold isn't an issue for f2p because they can still do trade runs that they can gather materials for easily and make anywhere from 2-9 gold per run. Only issue is that you don't get the money for 22 hours or so regardless of whether you are a Patron or f2p.

The major problem this game has is space.

Things I would have liked to seen changed:
*Non-instanced housing is great and cool but I would love to see instanced housing as well. Nobody can give me a good reason (At least in my opinion) why everyone can't own a house. It is the major selling point of the game and the only way to get it now is from players that bought up a ton of land in the first 2 hours or be in a good guild. If I had land I wouldn't be selling it. Also if there were Instanced housing they wouldn't have a problem having more than the few servers that they have now. They don't want merges on their hands. If they merged servers people would lose land claims and would rage the way it is now but there should never be a server with a queue of 3900 people. This just turns away prospective paying customers. It just doesn't make much sense to me.

Also my guild and I practiced running the 59 Gilda story quest run several times prior to launch and we could have 59 Gilda's in less than 2.5 hrs. Apparently everyone else in the head start did this as well. Due to the horrible idea of having items and quest givers react to every player that turns in a quest (they also have a cool-down between talking to the quest giver or interacting with an object on some quests)
One example that really bottle necked us was Flora on the West continent. A big block of stone with a chick in it kind of like when Han Solo was sealed in Carbonite. You had to interact with her to progress the quest. When you do this she is inaccessible to anyone else and has like a 2 sec cool down. That doesn't sound so bad but there were about 80 people on and around her trying to do the same thing and for every one that got it down 3 more would show up. This by itself took me 3 hours to luck out finally.
So the Gilda run that took less than 2.5 hrs before now ended up taking over 6 hours.
No game should ever have that same kind of mechanism.

    TL;DR version:
Limited space is the main reason that I have only rated this game a 7. If these issues weren't here I'd rate it a solid 9.
This isn't a P2W game anyone that says it is has no idea what they are talking about ask for specifics and see the above long version.

    2. Queue times. Shame on trion for being so slow to add servers. BUT understand at least they're trying not to spam servers and end up with ghost servers.

    3. Labor makes the player driven economy work. Those stating removing labor is the thing to do, don't even try and state why removing labor won't completely destroy the economy that is COMPLETELY BUILT AROUND HAVING LABOR BEING A LIMITED AMOUNT.
Diablo 3 Auction house DIED because constant printing of gear, without any limits. Its a fundamental economic value, IF YOU WANT A GOOD ECONOMY YOU CAN'T HAVE INFINITE PRODUCTION.

    4. Those stating its a PVP farm free players game, seem to be dumber than a box of rocks. Free or not, if you have even an ounce of intelligence, you'd understand going into a WAR ZONE (they label what status the zone is at VERY WELL) is going to get you killed. Simple concept right? Queue times are horrid. If you've paid or are F2P it won't matter. A majority of players are stuck in very lengthy que's. I've seen patrons, those that paid, stuck in 2hours or more on their ques. I myself, learning from prior disasters, chose F2P. I've had the last three days in consecutive 6+hour ques, and wasn't even able to play more than 2 hours total. Yesterday was a 3 hour que, a disconnect from their end, and put back into a que with 4500 people ahead of me.

You will hear fanboy after fanboy speak of how great the game is, one of their major sticks was to allow player held land, but it's a majorly busted feature. The little bit of game time I have had, you cannot find available land anywhere. Now, they speak that not all people will be able to own land, this isn't a big feature to me, but I did look. I've even heard stories and seen some videos of massive amounts of land being owned by one person. They would have been better served by fixing que's and doing a land blitz a month down the road to make things just a bit more level on the playing field.

They do have some saving features in distinct class combinations, the ability to make and use boats, and also utilize any sort of weapon and armor combinations you would like. The lack of concern and correspondence by this company in terms of how they are failing with the ability to open servers to the public is ludicrous at best.

If they are truly vested in bringing forth a better gaming experience then they should truly listen to their community at large, and not hide from the public eye, nor turn a blind eye to their problems.

Star Trek Online is probably the best example of this, or Lord of the Rings Online in the same genre. These aim for satisfaction amongst as much of the player base as possible, and earn their money from multiple small level, happy investments from them; buying a fancy horse here, a sideline of quests there. In such set ups the one off cost can be quite high but, because people feel sympathetic to the game, and the purchases are sporadic and at-will, players will pay for it.

The second focuses on huge purchases from the infamous "Whales", individuals who spend an enormous amount of money on a game. In such a system F2P players are not the customer but the product, used to generate a world for the Whales, and such games are more like Facebook whereby your personal experience is secondary to the major donor streams. In these MMOs, because the Whale model is expected, the cost for individual systems rises massively above the standard, indeed often even a Monthly Subscription won't unlock all the content and there's a DLC store on top of that. And the game itself in turn becomes about providing the sense of status and power to the Whales, often as a fantasy escape from a real world where they have little.

Archeage is absolutely in the second category of MMO. Which is the first piece of the puzzle as to why some people are so heavily invested in it, and so dismissive of criticism. It is a game focused around elitism of the worst kind; one that not only seeks to encourage people to think of themselves as Whales, but actively despises those who do not.

Despite the claims, the first part of the game itself is nothing like Ultima Online or any true sandbox. It's a pure on-rails MMO like World of Warcraft and Everquest. But even more disengaged because everything is being done to hurry you towards End Game and the real nature of the beast. Quest locations are marked on both the mini map, the world map, and arrows beneath your character pointing directly at them. You can honestly just skip all the quest text and run from waypoint to waypoint and yes, kill 10 wildebeests. As far as Level 18 now and I have yet to see a quest that wasn't "Click that box" or "kill those things" bar one, a very short "follow the NPC and click the icon when he stops".

Until you hit the quest that teaches farming trading, and gives you the Donkey. The "Trade Run: Solzreed to Memoria" quest. Before now you've been questing in a coma. The only raised eyebrow was that mobs don't carry "drops" at all, only "purses" which you have to right click and open to get at your gold. You've noticed it took some of your "labor" points to open these, but nothing else seemed to be using them so... ok? This quest asks you to make some special Solzreed food and take it elsewhere. The first problem? It doesn't tell you what the recipe of that food actually is. I had to google it.

I then followed the instructions, and set off to place the Scarecrow that gives you some protected space and allows you to plant the crops that allow you to complete the quest. Then I discovered it; You're locked completely out of placing it unless you are a Patron, that is a paying subscriber of some kind. Growing wild allows other players to steal your crops, but the quest hints that you can grow in a public farm protected for 1 day. Except what it doesn't say is that the farms only take some crops, are scattered across multiple zones and to plant, feed, harvest your crops all take Labor. So much labor that when I first played, I didn't have enough from THIRTEEN LEVELS OF GAMEPLAY. That's what I get for wanting to open my looted gold, I guess?

The people who were obsessed with Archeage insisted to me during Closed Beta that Trion were going to change this horrendous mechanic; they did not. This time around, because of a bug giving me Patron on the first day, and only trying it at L17, I had enough Labor that I could finish the planting. Only now I can't do anything else unless I stay in game unattended for hours on end, thus causing the queues many of these reviews are now complaining about.

But what about the end game?! And this is the second place some of those 10s are coming from; Like EvE and any other PvP game which feeds individual ego, the supporters are irrationally dedicated to the game. They don't really care how miserable the experience is for the average player as long as they get to melt your face in it; yet you WONT be PvPing unless you're dropping whale money. Crafting to survive L30+ where it's all in a PvP zone? Massive labor requirements. Want a house? You needed labor AND real cash spent just to build it, and had to be in the Head Start to place it. A boat? Same again.

Don't believe the hype. Unless you plan to Whale on newbies, Archeage will hate you.

Want to know what ArcheAge is really like? Avoid metacritic. Go to places like the ArcheAge reddit, Massively, and others to clue in on what the game is like. For what its worth, I'll throw my two cents.

ArcheAge is the first MMO to actually pull me in and keep me engaged. Its very similar to Eve-online in structure, yet has a traditional MMO/questing backdrop. The entire world is open and seamless - hardly any instances or loading screens. Exploration is a huge factor. The combat system is standard, mundane even.. but it has a pretty good feel to the animations and the combo system combined with the great class system make it fun. Like EvE, certain regions are more dangerous than others - open PvP zones.

I'm just going to address all the complaints people have on here with the hard facts. You'll have to determine yourself if you can trust the review spam.

Pay to win: Have you ever noticed, EVERY single F2P game ever released has an onslaught of people with no access to a credit card complaining about pay to win? These are people who eat their cake and yet want it too - people who want the entire game to be free and otherwise wouldn't have even bothered looking at all if it had a paywall. Its the same situation for ArcheAge. It really isn't pay to win. Free players can literally do anything, even OWN PATRON STATUS (which buffs labor generation, shorter queues, allows you to own land, and sell on the auction house) if they buy patron status using 2 APEX - think PLEX from EvE Online. If you are a half decent trader, quester, or high level player this really isn't that hard to get. APEX currently costs around 38 gold to get. Just spending a few short hours getting to level 10 hanging around in starting zones and I'm already at 1.5 gold. And I've not even touched stuff that makes you rich, like trading (up to 11g+ per run).

So does the labor generation make it pay to win? Not really. If you are questing, your labor spend is going to be so low that you'll never run out of labor. Labor is mostly a drain if you get heavy into vocational activities, such a farming, building houses, mining, etc. And even then there are potions you can buy with in-game gold to boost your labor. Questing followed by PvP/Endgame raids is the bread and butter of any MMO, and ArcheAge is fully featured and not stunted at all when it comes to this for all players. Owning land isn't necessary at all to play the game, its just a nice perk of being a paying member and it lets you plant farms that can't get uprooted (that you can use for crafting). I don't think its unreasonable to have to pay $15/mo for the ability to get serious into vocational activities, and you don't even need to do that if you make enough money in-game to pay for it yourself.

Servers: Yes the server situation is **** but its the same for every MMO launch. They can't just open a ton of new servers because then servers would be a ghost town in two months - this is bad since you can't merge servers in ArcheAge due to each server being a persistent world with player own homes, land, territory, etc. The queues will die down after a week or two.

Whining of founders packages being worth less than starter packages: I don't really see it. A founder who paid $150 got 11,000 gold, a handful of exclusive items and EARLY ACCESS TO THE GAME FOR MONTHS and patron status for months. Meanwhile people can buy a $150 starter package right now, that only gets you 1,500 gold, but a bunch of vanity items (potentially) worth more than 11,000 gold and patron status. The former gave you early access and the choice of what to spend all your gold on, the latter only gives a small amount of gold and a bunch of items you probably don't need. Where are the founders getting screwed again?

So, if anyone's gotten this far into the review good job. Look over the actual facts before you trust metacritic user reviews. Look over the features of the game, and the above information if it sounds like its for you. Personally, paying $15/mo and nothing else for one of the best MMO's I've played that has made me actually want to stick around is a steal. Even if you can't afford to pay anything for ArcheAge there is a ton of unrestricted value here for free players - ALL of PvE and PvP features are completely free to access right out of the gate for all players. There's no leveling grind that is unbearable to work with if you are free (all players level at the same rate and its just like a normal MMO here), there are no items that make you win that you can only get with $$$, there is no restricted quests/raids/content (other than owning land) between free or paid. The only thing paid players get over free in gameplay is the ability to own land, and able to do vocational activities more intensely. Why is that so bad?

Trion are a truly disgusting company. Even if I don't rage uninstall this game, there is no way that I'll ever part with my money for this game now, not after this. You cannot just sit back and let this all blow over when you have a duty to ensure your customers are happy. 4hours 45 mins in queue and still not in-game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First I'd like to mention that this game is one of those F2P games that are not really F2P. If you do not atleast buy patron some essential features of the game are denied. Labor which is used for all non combat activities as well as opening loot bags will only be gained while you are online and only at half the speed of subscribers. As a subscriber I can tell you that even the increased labor regeneration is very limiting. Further alot of the items like labor potions, inventory expensions and tax certificates are almost necessary for a decent gaming experience. If you want to enjoy all aspects of ArcheAge at a more then after work intensity you can expect to pay the retail price of an average game for microtransaction items each month or feel forced to really streamline your gameplay for max use of you available resources. Patron remains a must have.

Adressing the actual game not the financial concept:
As so many games in the past this game falls short of the expectations. The world is horribly small. At this moment it only takes about 17min to walk (slowes mode of transportation) your continent from one end to the other. This would already be bad under normal circumstances but for ArcheAge being a sandbox MMO it is multiple times worse. Why is that?

Alot of the game revolves around crafting and resource production. The game offers some public farms on which you can grow a limited number of things, but those will never be enough to occupy you or provide sufficient supply. At this point the limited space kicks in and hampers your experience. The world is so small that hundreds of people running around it lead to most wild plants being harvested by random chance encounters within seconds of them maturing (which takes hours to days depending on the plant). As a result WoW, Rift or Wildstar like resource gathering is only possible for ore and stone since it is an exception considering respawn times. For plants and lifestock you will have to resort to growing it yourself. Usually this would be big pro creating an Eve like economy. In ArcheAge space limitations stunt the game. Almost all building lots (space to place your farms) were taken within ours of the servers opening. If you were not among those to grab your piece of the pie you are screwed. Building lots sell for ALOT. The most expensive I witnessed was 150$ in microtransaction items for a single housing lot. This leaves you with the last option: unprotected farming. This basically means you try to find a corner of the world where no one comes around and place your crops there. Those can be stolen by other players though. I have been hunting those farmes myself and I have to say: Even the most remote mountain areas which take real effort to access are traveled by scavengers at multiple encounters per hour 'causing very frustrating situations even for the most dedicated wild farmers.

Overall if you want sandbox play Eve. I dont play it but I have taken a look and it offers way more. The world of ArcheAge is a bucket compared to the sea Eve is.

As a final note. Not enough servers. Queue times of 8 hours or more to finally log in are currently the rule.

What ArcheAge presents, past the horror of the chilling launch, is an open world full of opportunities and challenges as we have not seen for a too-long time demonstrating that the real MMORPG, those based on persistence and interaction, have not disappeared.

Don’t let your judgment be clouded by other people’s opinions influenced by terrible server problems they encountered when ArcheAge was launched. It’s a really good, beautiful game. [Dec 2014, p.76]

ArcheAge is one of the best free-to-play games to be released this year, with a near endless amount of content awaiting eager adventurers.
