If you want an undersea simulation or oceanic real-time strategy, then forget it; but if what you desire is arcade action in a novel and challenging context, then it fits the bill.
-
If you closed your eyes and managed to drown out the superfluous and oft aggravating German techno you wouldn't for a second know that the game took place underwater. It features none of the ambience, deep bass, and whooshing water associated with the setting.
-
Some gamesAquaNox, for exampleseem like they were made up of leftover game parts and assembled in total darkness by a team of deranged, acid-dropping monkeys...What's really crazy is that, oddly enough, it ain't half bad.
-
An entirely enjoyable experience. It's not ultra-weighty gaming, and that's a good thing. It's easy to get into, easy to control, and easy to enjoy.
-
Computer Gaming WorldGorgeous, with great lighting effects, tremendous fireballs, and richly detailed models. [Mar 2002, p.79]
-
The dialog is so long and drawn out that it just gets boring. Too much talking and not enough shooting!
-
A bit of a bimbo, pretty but mindless.
-
It should by no means be considered to be a submarine simulation, but rather a simple arcade shoot-em-up, used only for time wasting when you have nothing the least bit intelligent to play.
-
PC GamerSadly, in addition to the crap voice acting, the games phat/phunky Euro-trash techno beats will have you either tapping your toes or (like me) turning off the music altogether. [Feb 2002, p.80]
-
While outstanding graphics can make a good game seem great, occasionally a game features gameplay so weak that even amazing graphics can't camouflage its flaws. Enter AquaNox, a game with far more flash than substance.
-
The graphics and sound are incredible, and it's obvious that this game has a lot of potential, if only the developers would utilize that potential.
-
If you have a GeForce III or comparably advanced graphics card, the game might be worth picking up as a showcase, or as a simple and fun -- if slightly disappointing -- arcade-style shooter.
-
The first time you see AquaNox in action, you'll probably be impressed with the bright lights and flashy explosions, but you'll probably tire of those in about five minutes.
