Yet another unfinished game I'm expected to pay up-front for. Stop telling me everything will be fixed later! I bought this game today, not in 6 months or however long it'll take to "fix" it. Maybe if Bioware stopped shipping incomplete trash to beat some arbitrary publisher deadline, their reputation wouldn't be in the toilet.

Rated this a 3 because it looks nice. That's it. Game play consists of tired and terrible "hold this point against enemy waves!" or "bring x number of shiny things to this shiny thing!" missions over and over. Guns are all generic sounding and feeling, abilities are just there to spam out with little thought to how to effectively set up combos. Would have been nice to see some clear guidance on how the combo system is supposed to work.

The Bioware storytelling is a mere shadow of old, with lore and exposition shoehorned into the awful (slow!)walking-simulator that is the games main "hub", Ft. Tarsis. Boring characters, boring exposition, inconsequential choices in dialogue trees. But at least the game looks nice, and flying is fun, whee!

Oh, and you better believe the microtransactions are fully fleshed out, get those coins so you can upgrade your suit's appearance! It's truly like they needed a "game" to build around their money-grubbing appearance engine. 8 bucks for a javelin skin? Nope, nope, nope.

Terrible, terrible game, not good for Bioware, not even good as an indie game.

They will definitely not be able to turn it around. The fact the next real update is only in May shows how this game will actually shape up. Good luck keeping a player base for 3 months let alone 1 week with a game that has absolutely ZERO content, after the initial fun of flying wears off there is seriously nothing to do in this game as well as no point in doing anything currently in the game as the loot in this looter shooter is bullcrap, assuming you can get through the ridiculous amounts of bugs and loading screens in this 'Special K' of a game. I’m amazed people have yet to figure out why their beloved developers have fallen. This is what happens when you stop hiring, promoting, and rewarding based on merit. Skill, talent, work ethic have no place in such industries anymore. Arbitrary diversity, identity politics, and SJW activism have destroyed modern videos games. The result is Anthem.

This is what happens when you make a game for your shareholders, rather than gamers. The quality and care is nonexistant in this title. We got some hints that Bioware was going downhill after the disaster known as Mass Effect: Andromeda. This game solidifies that. Mark my words: their next game will be trash too: their next Dragon Age game.

Even The Division had less bugs.
I don't know if they have a playtesting/quality management department but if they do it consits of 1 person only. For a AAA developer the amount of bugs is not acceptable. The only other good thing is i only spent 15 bucks and will stop playing when TD2 comes out.

As a shooter-looper game I actually don't mind the grinding part that most complaint. For me it's something that give me some drive to keep playing, so I am always making some progress when I want to have some few hours of fun. But even with this mindset, this game is purely gold on how a lazy developer could do. For whatever stupid lame story reason, you have to go here defend that, collect this. Every freaking single time with zero variation. And to "prove your worthiness" you need to do something that other normal game would only ask you to do as achievement instead of actual gameplay. What's worse? if you are in a team, only 1 guy who make the kill shot or picking up are counted. So basically its asking you to play solo.

it's just boring as hell. The gunplay is so weak that i feel like it's weaker than the division 1, it's basically just all about your ability, which I really hate it being so supernatural and witch like effect instead of being a true "mech". The flying part is so mediocre and slow that it's ruin the whole experience to me.

If you want some fun shooter looter, go to warframe. If you want to spend some money, find some charity organization or buy some cosmetic for warframe. That game is a free to pay that's done right.
If you want to save Bioware/Mass Effect, no it's done for. Only thing you could do is don't buy anything from EA again and hope it's gone so it won't keep ruining and then closing the game studio.

Anthem looked very promising before its release, something that most games share with each other when a big publisher is in charge of the marketing. However, the mostly transparent and very down-to-the-community approach that the devs took by being very active on twitter, reddit and on their livestreams build up at least hope, that Bioware would've found back to their former glory.

And at its core, Anthem is a really strong game. The gunplay is solid, the different Javelins with their unique abilities have a good flow to them (despite some balancing issues) and the flying is not just a gimmick but something to factor in on every encounter. When there is one thing, where the game lives up to its expectations, it is the javelin design and the combat system surrounding it.

However, the good core of the combat is overshadowed by technical issues and a repetitive gameplay that rarely motivates you to spend time in the 'so called' endgame.

    Technical Issues / Performance:
First up: If you don't own an SSD, don't play Anthem. The game has loading screens for everything, including the Forge (which is there you change your items/javelin build) and it will take between 40-90 seconds (depending on the activity) to leave the loading screen. Sometimes, you even get a loading screen on top of a loading screen because the rest of your team already headed forward and the game forcibly pulls you to the rest of your team, which results in another loading screen.

There is a a sheer abundance of glitches and bugs that accompany the performance of the game which makes playing Anthem an ongoing gamble if you can actually play a mission or stronghold at all or if you have to reload everything, sometimes multiple times. It is fair to say that the state in which Anthem launched, is a complete embarrasment to their QA team or whoever is responsible for that mess that is in a worse technical state than the demo.

    Gameplay:
The gameplay of Anthem knows only three specific types of game encounters:
    > Point Defense
    > Fetch numbers of item A and bring it to ooint B
    > Kill stuff until your mission updates

Those three pillars of mission design repeat themselves over and over, even within the storyline, where Bioware could have gone nuts with all the cool stuff their storyline had to offer, if it had been properly executed. The game doesn't try to hide the three game mechanics from you and it doesn't try to mask it. Instead you kill the same 2-3 types of enemies of enemies over and over again, fetch the same items (not even those change, there are like 2-3 presets for them as well) until you get one unique bossfight at the end of the storyline and thats literally it.

The strongholds, which are supposed to be the endgame activity, have, despite a plethora of technical issues (which caused Bioware to deactivate quickplay for them temporarily) a good design despite the third one, which is just the last story mission tagged as a Stronghold.

    Storyline:
Bioware is known for their good and deep story in their games and in some interviews, they also acknowledged, that story would be a centerpiece of Anthem as well. However, the story itself was bland and uninspired and felt much more like an introduction to something bigger that we have yet to see. Sometimes there are bits where your character interacts with his dialogue partner, mostly during lenghty dialogue cutscenes and in those moments, you can really see that Bioware still got what it takes to tell a good story. Those cutscenes really sucked me in but where far too rare in order to make the otherwise bland story special.

The world of Anthem is so rich with interesting characters and unique features, however compared to their previous games, Anthem fails to tell an interesting storyline. In fact, the main campaign isn't even in line with their leveling curve and I finished the main storyline at around level 19 of 30 and had to grind 11 levels in strongholds, missions and contracts until I was able to experience the endgame.

    Endgame:
Anthems endgame is currently pretty much non-existent. If you had to call some part of the game "endgame", it would be unlocking the Grandmaster difficulties and playing the same three strongholds over and over in order to achieve legendary and masterwork items. And in fact, I think that would keep people at least entertained until their content patch in march hits. The numerous technical issues and horrendous loading times however, do a perfect job of blocking you from enjoying that form of content.

    Verdict:
Anthem has a strong base, but lacks in nearly every part despite its core gameplay, which is at least solid. You will only enjoy this game, if you somehow don't experience all the technical issues others are experiencing and if you fall in love with the gameworld. In any other case, I'd advise skipping this title. I think myself lucky that I only paid 15 Euros for EA premier access for this game.

Bioware made this and from them, you would expect a thrilling story that captures you and get you invested into the game but nope something went wrong with the story and it's a big buggy mess.

The only good things about the game are flight mechanics and the graphics, combat. That's it.

Emptiness seems to haunt Anthem and you can feel it from Fort Tarsis up to a small world filled with living creatures barely there. The world looks good but it's missing so much content for 60 dollars. Hate to say it but Destiney 2 had much more content at launch compared to this. Some mechanics are just poorly made that you start to really question the reality on who really made this game and how did it make onto the final game. Some mechanics are just missing like the Waypoint you can't even put a waypoint on a map for this type of game. It's just something that should already be in the game.

The loading screen sure the loading times has been shorted but the problem still remains. They should focus on removing most of the loading screens cause it's supposed to be open world but it's not. Buy Anthem and you get a loading simulator with the game. There was an early alpha and then there was the Vip demo and then Demo yet most of the bugs were reported early on and most of it should have been fixed by this stage. The Demo was supposed to show players a ting portion of the game but in reality, it only showed how poorly made this game truly is. Even the Division 2 beta had more content in it than the Anthem Demo. Right now this game is just barely worth 5 bucks in my opinion. There is so little content for the price tag they ask for it. So much is missing from the game and this game feels almost like an early access title that you pick up from steam hoping that they will update it and make it better as time goes. Shame on Bioware and shame on EA this game could have been one of the greatest game ever. Stay away from this game until they really start to add good content or just wait until it goes to sale for 5 bucks. Right now the score for this game is just a simple 0 out of 10.

But after playing the closed Alpha, and then the VIP and open demos.. And finally the game, when it became available on the 15th for me to play, my hype quickly faded. Lacking characters, boring hub, uninteresting gun-play, and combat that just grew stale after a few hours. The game was gorgeous, when I was stuck in loading screens for up to 5 or so minutes (Mind you, the game was installed on my SSD) and when it wasn't experiencing horrendous pop-ins. But beyond that, and the fun flight mechanic, it honestly was just... Lacking. I'd been waiting so long for this game, hoping that BioWare would retain that old BioWare magic and charm, and that Andromeda wasn't a sign of what was to come.. But, honestly I'm left disappointed, only grateful that I only had to pay 15 dollars to play the game, thanks to Origin Premier. Admittedly I haven't finished the campaign, I couldn't. I just couldn't hold interest in it.. It just wasn't an interesting story, and the characters within this world are just.. Range from irritating, to lifeless, or simply uninteresting, which is sad given how good the VA work actually is. What makes things worse is that from what I've seen, the diversity of areas for the missions beyond what I've played isn't any different than the zones and types of missions I've done myself. The areas while good looking, are all.. Similar. There is a massive lack of Diversity, and this carries into the end game. 3 Strongholds, one of which is the final mission of the story, Daily missions, and Free Roam world events make up the whole of your end game.. That is.. Just not enough, not fun. Especially when many of us have already played one of those strong holds to death from the Demo. I can only hope that this game improves in the future, and that it does at least one thing that Destiny does, and manages to bring itself back with some sort of well received, and wonderful update or content drop, much to the vein of Destiny's Taken king, or Destiny 2's Forsaken. Hopefully one day in the near future I can come back, erase this review, and give the game a much better one in it's place. Expand

Honestly this could have been fun, my biggest issue is the enemies refusing to fight back. It's just too easy. Not only that My friends and I experienced way too many bugs in a small amount of time. On the plus side the graphics look awesome but graphics ain't going to save this game.

I don't understand what Bioware did for six years. The game looks good only if you think of it as a demo game. When you really want to play you must do the same thing again and again and again and don't make me start with the story. What happened to the KOTOR writers? The writers from ME? Probably they left. This game is not made by Bioware, it's made by EA named BW. And yeah, I didn't sayI don't understand what Bioware did for six years. The game looks good only if you think of it as a demo game. Macrotransactions are everywhere and reallly expensive.
Ill have to use the same character and skin for the whole game because each one costs 20eu. Even thought I've payed the game 60eu. EA just skips spitting **** in the face of players.

Also, maybe "more importantly", the game is unplayable. I have a more than capable rig and internet connection, and yet the game crashes randomly and keeps disconnecting from the network. I really like how they say its a problem on 'my end'. Best part: it also happens when I play solo. Best appart again: it happens WHILE im watching a cutscene, SOLO. Best part again, when that happens, the game sends you back to the start menu, AFTER a loading screen. Then youre on for 2 more loading screens.

Ive had 11 disconnections and more than 30 rubber banding situations (3 caused me to die, thus reload) IN 2 HOURS of gameplay! Ping of 6, download of 20m/s. 1 hour being solo.

This game isnt open world. It has horrendous loading screens, even on an ssd. Hell, the UI to customize a Javelin has a loading screen of 20s! (Count +30s when youll exit the UI).

I have a high end PC, the game is running at 1440p ultra settings, its pretty much stable, its running above 60fps almost all the time and I don't have major problems. Loadings are a real issue here, I installed the game on a SSD raid 0 setup, so it's not taking too long, but it takes a little to load all the necessary data, but I would say that is not the loading time that ruins the experience, is the amount of loading the game has, that is the real problem.

Frankly I haven't played a lot of it to make a concrete statement about the story, but of what I've seen till now it seems interesting, Im trying to play it paying attention to the plot and reading all the lore, so I think it is a rich world and you can see that they created that world with love and commitment.

This kind of game tend to be a little repetitive, I mean, look at Diablo, it is a dungeon crawler and it is pretty repetitive sometimes. To be stronger you have to grind and look for good loot, that is what Diablo and Anthem is about, so they are repetitive that is inevitable.

I just want them to keep pushing and improve the game as much as possible, add new content and so on. Dont be promiscuous when it comes to microtransactions, EA is greedy and its a real and constant risk to this game, but we have to understand that to work as a live service it needs funds to continue to improve and polish more and more, even be heavely upgraded in the future. Today the economy seems reasonable, but EA could screw everything in a blink of an eye.

For what I've mentioned until now I think 80 is a fair score. The game has a lot of potential and its beautiful, even after the downgrade. The small problems become really small compared with the good gameplay, gorgeous world and rich lore Anthem has.

EA's and Biowares Anthem are non of those. You could always discuss "fun" but the pillars of this game are visual effects, customization and monetization. Is it the new standard to launch broken unfinished games? Is it okay to false advertise and overhype shallow products like these?
I feel no passion, no creativity and no love for the gamer with this release.
It is a looter shooter with non interesting loot in a very forgettable planet with repetitive missions and activities, shooting different races that feel no different at all, with terrible AI controlled enemies that are bullet sponge type bosses. Anthem had 7 years of work and Bioware had the opportunity to look at games like borderlands, destiny, division, mass effect, etc to make this game better and at least working.
I think in the end it's a nice looking game where the focus is put exactly on that alone. A very poor product in technical and creative sense.

Granted, the game looks pretty and is fun at first, but the fun quickly drops away to repetition due to an utter lack of content variety and nothing really unique to offer. It's like BioWare completely ignored the mistakes being made by all the other looter shooter incumbents like Destiny and Warframe, though I have a hunch (without backing evidence) much of the lack of content is due to a large portion of the late development period was spent frantically removing the lootboxes you know were originally in the game until the Battlefront 2 controversy.

The overall mediocrity of the game is turned into an absolute "do not buy" thanks to the rabid fans that attack any negative viewpoints about games made by their Beloved BioWare, even if BioWare is just a brand and the people that made the renown games for that brand have all largely left long since. Even here, you'll see those fans calling criticism "hate" in order to dismiss it as invalid. The worst one I saw, however, was the fan saying they didn't really like Anthem but wanted to buy it anyway and donate it to charity just to "support" BioWare, not realizing that it literally the most crippling thing they could do to a business. This level of toxic fandom is the absolute worst part of any BioWare game and leads me to rarely recommend any of them nowadays.

Do you want a version of Anthem that's worth it? Play Warframe. It's free and the community is one of the best you'll find in the gaming space.

They have shown that they do not even know what the potentials for this game are because of their lack luster mission design that despite the fact that they have such a cool flying mechanic of their battle-suites does not utilize that and instead have you stay stationary on the ground with boring waves of stupid enemies advancing on that location... A lot of reviewers lost all their credibility here, if you just look at their positive and therefore incompetent reviews.. Another sad release for gamers.. Looking back the last few years we had our fair share of this kind of release behaviour.. ( destiny2, seaofthiefes, nomanssky,...) Do not get your hopes up for this title and do not defend this kind of bad business practise!

Poorly optimized, repetitive and boring gameplay loop, weapon sponge enemies with poor AI, cosmetic microtransactions in a full priced triple-A game make this game not worth your time or money unless it goes free to play.

This game is the worst Grinding multiplayer game ever. Even Destiny 2 is much more funny. Anthem's game engine is actually pretty good. Especially flying in "OPEN" world and looking the scene was my favourite activity in game. Never mind, there are too many things to write here but actually not worth it. Don't bother to buy it.

If there were more to the game I could say fine but I can't. if this game was free it would be praised, I would praise it since I know they'll fix the game. But no, this isn't warframe! I paid 250 Reais which is equal to 1/4 of my salary for this game! What do I get? A game that is gorgeous to look at and yet has no personality, where it gives me the ability to fly but then shoves loading screens and dull stiff combat in my face. "Customization" that word is a joke in this game since I have to pay for most cosmetics "bUt It dOeSn'T aFfEcT gAmEpLaY" Yes it does. I gotta look at the game don't I? If I had a 50 more cosmetics I would care less. The lackluster story is below bare minimum with a bunch of characters that are so uninteresting tryin to make jokes it makes amateur night at a crap night club seem like a blast. Could it get better, of course it can. But put more value into your money, this shouldn't be a full priced game, it either should be a free game or still be in late alpha. I bought this game to truely prove to myself that EA is cancer. I was right. They eat everyone's soul and they're in the process of eatting their own soul. I am convinced this game was developed as a way to sell more subscriptions to this service as I cannot see anyone justifying a 60 USD purchase for this product. I mainly downloaded the game to play with a group of friends. Which is an odd sentence to type when you consider this is a BioWare title a studio known best for its single player RPG experiences. Excluding the SW MMO but even that feels like a single player experience these days. Without rehashing to hard on the things we've all already heard Anthem is a by the numbers looter shooter. I found myself calling out plot twists long before they would occur in the game. This wouldn't be so bad if at one point this title didn't attempt to advertise that the actions of the player would impact the world around them and shape relationships. That was a bold faced lie nothing you do in reference to character interaction will have any form of significant impact on the game. Now you will be able to "impact" the lives of some of the smaller side characters but only minimally and you never really feel the reward or consequence of these actions outside of sound bytes given to you by the NPC's involved. I understand this was never intended to be a story rich experience but even going in with low expectations I found myself disappointed. The player is expected to be wholly invested in the events and characters around you whilst the only way the game truly expands on the concepts you're learning about is through codex entries that are about as engaging to read as some of my college textbooks. All these complaints and let downs without even touching on the fact that should you even try to engross yourself in this world all you're really doing is slowing your friends down who might just want to get on to the next mission but are stuck waiting on you to finish just one more conversation. Now you might think "just let your friends move on and go at your own pace" sure except because of the disastrous load times you'll often find the random squad you joined to complete this mission have long since loaded in and have sped off to the starting area without you which will force you to sit through yet another drab loading screen before you're thrust into the middle of a random battle with no sense as to why you're doing what you're doing. There is of course the option to play in private matches by yourself but then that tasks you with taking on the mission completely alone. You aren't given the option to call on any of the characters you've interacted with inside fort Tarsis to aid you even though many of them can use javelins. Missions are ridiculously easy on standard difficulties so it isn't as if you're suffering with some kind of handicap but it's just another BioWare staple that seems to have been removed solely to push the multiplayer experience. All and all I'd have to say the game though stunning to look at is dreadfully empty and devoid of the flare that made so many of my favorite BioWare titles memorable I would only recommend someone try this game if they are desperate for another bland multiplayer shooter and even then just sub to one month of Origin Premier just be sure to cancel the reoccurring billing so EA doesn't get a dime more of your money then 15 dollars which is about what I would say this game is worth. It is a shambolic mess and that situation has not improved in any meaningful fashion since launch (it's gotten worse if anything).

The game is the proverbial one trick pony with an amazing trick (to be fair). It has one of the best combat mechanics (/feeling of agency in combat) I've experienced in any game and the shame of it is that this can and could keep you coming back for more (it's so satisfying) for a long time until you come to the realisation that this is literally it's only trick (good as it is).

The setting, characters and the entire storyline is just not interesting. The game works hard with all the standard tropes to hook you emotionally but somehow (despite some decent mocap and voice acting) just falls flat and the characters don't feel more than digital puppets, the story is uninspiring (and cliched) and the world feels "samey" and uninteresting after the initial few hours.

Graphically it's pretty but honestly, in the modern era, it's not particularly special. It's basically on par with the fidelity we expect from AAA titles nowadays.

Once you get to the end-game it falls to pieces completely. The "grind" is unrewarding and positively frustrating. You will lose interest very quickly.

Keep in mind that the current review score is anchored on many good reviews in the first week by hopeful players who enjoyed the core mechanic (as did we all) but didn't realise how flat and shallow this shell of a game really is (once you finish the 10 hours of campaign). We all were optimistic that BioWare would come good and deliver the game we had seen in the pre-launch promotions and demos. It is as far from those today as it was at launch and from what we've seen from BioWare in the first crucial months of a difficult launch, it's never going to get there.

So don't be fooled by the initial optimism. If those reviewers came back now three months after lauch and re-scored, this would be in the low 30%s (if that)

Save your hard earned money for something more worthy of it... unless you just like to ride that one trip pony for hours and hours and hours and hours (I got to 138 before I finally fell off with exhaustion :>)

BioWare are frauds and they pulled the scam of the year. If you don't understand why I'm saying it, watch and read all the marketing related stuff from EA and tally against how many of them have been fulfilled.

Matchmaking seems to pair you up with players when you would rather play alone and fails to find any players to help you when you would like some help from a squad. The difficulty varies from stupidly easy (in main quest missions) to stupidly hard (if you begin the wrong side mission) The worst part of this difficulty discrepancy is that the enemies you are facing all look alike. This game is in its second year of release and they STILL haven't fixed something as essential as using Raw mouse input so if you move the mouse slowly the input doesn't get registered in-game.

Reminds you every second that you can be bothered to play that it's a bad console port.

Worst optimization ever. It's just a scam on PC. Stuttering with low graphics settings in I7 7800x, 32GB ram, 2070, SSD 4GB/s. So have in mind, that you have only 24 hours to refund the game if you want to give it a try.

The Central Hub is dead and lifeless, character models are standing around seeming to chat but you hear dead silence. DLC isn't going to fix these issues. i give 1 point for the mobility aspect being fun but even that feels awkward when transitioning from flying to shooting etc it breaks the fast-paced feel you get when flying through combat or retreating.

It's obvious that Anthem didn't have enough development time, but had some great potential. It's a real shame, that everything turned out this way. Even now, the game can bring out positive emotions. Hasty climbers have sudden falls. No matter how ironic this proverb may seem, it's incredibly relevant for Anthem.
