-
A cerebral challenge that has the right combination of historical perspective, easy control elements, well-designed graphics, and solid game play.
-
GamePowerSome players will be offended by the manner in which some cultures are portrayed. This is the most damning criticism that can be levied on America. Otherwise, it is a solid piece of work that is a great deal of fun to play, regardless of which campaign one chooses: Native American, Mexican, outlaw, or settlers.
-
We've played "Age of Empires," and America, you are no "Age of Empires."
-
America had the potential here for a great game, but that limited multiplayer and weak AI really is a let down.
-
A cookie-cutter "Age of Empires" clone...delivers a dose of good, old-fashioned fun.
-
Unfortunately, American doesn't offer much in the way of multi-player. While there are 20 multi-player maps available with the package, skirmishes are limited to LAN play only.
-
Has all the trappings of a good game: its setting is unique (there are far too few games set in the old west), and it copies a highly successful formula all the while adding enough flavor to separate itself as a distinct product. But limited game options coupled with bonehead AI make a recipe for disaster in the crowded market of the real time strategy game.
-
Everything it has to offer has been seen many times before in older RTS games. Old-fashioned gamelpay, lackluster AI, and obsolete graphics with a huge resemblance to the good old AOE are the main downsides to this title. Really not enough to make me ever want to load up America again.
-
Daily RadarThe stories, on the other hand, are so boring and unconnected that they must have been based on historical facts that have long since been forgotten, except in some German children's textbook.
-
The game's graphics are uninspired and the sound is awful, and those elements in the gameplay that are subtly different from those in other real-time strategy games won't be noticeable to any but the most experienced real-time strategy players.
-
PC GamerHistory Buffs may consider this "Age of Empires" clone if it's cheap, but all else leave it be. [Apr 2001, p.84]
-
Da GameboyzA classic example of a game that looks pretty decent of paper, but is actually horrible in application.
-
I wish I could erase the few days I spent playing this game.
-
From the graphics to the execution to the gameplay mechanics, America is the poorest excuse for a real-time strategy game I've seen.
-
The decidedly unreasonable degree of difficulty prevents any of it from developing into something entertaining.

MarkJun 18, 2004"Been there, done that." Not a "must-have" game, but it's not bad, either. It does look a lot like Age of Kings.
