Troy is a good addition to the Total War franchise with an interesting setting. However, it does not capture the imagination or attention like previous entries in the franchise.

The clearer focus on the campaign as well as the cool mythical troops and the setting are on spot, but total standstill in terms of battlefield mechanics and minor flaws make sure that Troy doesn’t reach its potential.

A Total War Saga: Troy is not a bad game, but some of the developers' decisions were quite controversial. However, it will always find its loyal fans thanks to unique setting. And it's possible that later it will be expanded and upgraded.

Troy is not a very good approximation of the actual Trojan War, nor is it pure mythological carnage. But, miraculously, it actually manages to blend real-time battles and long-term strategy into a really exciting cocktail.

There is no denying that A Total War Saga: Troy is suffering from numerous problems, as the formula that started with Rome 2 and reached its full potential with Warhammer 2 is starting to show its age, and proves that it is time for major changes in the core mechanisms of the series. All that said, Troy is still an entertaining experience if you are a hardcore strategy fan and can keep you engaged for many, many hours.

Perennial issues aside, with Thrones of Britannia and now Troy, the spin-off Saga series has proved adept at delivering a kind of Total War that is more focused, flavourful, and even experimental than the mainline series. In the specific case of Troy, it's not always an unmitigated success; for every dose of granular detail that reveals more strategic options there's another element of graininess that obscures. At its best, though, Troy is a pretty epic series of bloody enjoyable battles that is just about as good as the series has delivered.

If you play it for free this is an excellent introduction to the concept of Total War, but as a paid-for product it’s a sometimes awkward mix of fact and fiction, old problems and new.

Better than Thrones of Britannia, A Total War Saga: Troy can't get to the top of the Total War saga because of some problems.

If you’re a veteran RTS/grand strategy fan that is looking for something that innovates – Troy won’t fully satisfy your appetite, but it will entertain.

A Total War Saga: TROY does a good job in retelling the events of the Trojan War by using interesting elements from Greek mythology as well as the Iliad. However, there were times where the controls felt a little stiff, such as troop organization. The game also doesn’t meet its full potential graphically. That said, battles are simplistic to play but difficult to master. Since there are different lead characters to play as, TROY offers plenty of replay value as well as a chance to enjoy some Greek mythology on each run. It's not a perfect game, but fighting the Minotaur is too cool to pass up.

It is a true pleasure to discover a beloved franchise like Total War that uses the Trojan War as a background. It is a great RTS, with some fantastic artistic value and and a few novelties that make it really interesting for this series. Nevertheless, some mechanics like the economy are a bit under-exploited, especially in mid-game until the end. Difficulty feels very odd with enemies who use and abuse the agent system to sabotage your faction.

Total War Saga: Troy takes the Total War franchise to the Bronze Age and while it brings a handful of new changes, Troy is an interesting, but flawed entry in the Total War series.

It’s clear the ‘Saga’ series of Total War has some issues to resolve before titles like Troy can be a success. Their budget and prioritisation in the series is without direction and with something of an identity crisis in a series that already releases annualised big-budget titles. To conclude, Creative Assembly has a lot of work to do in order to refine this class of smaller budget game before it’ll be a successful addition to their roster.

As an abstract total conversion of Total War, Troy is a passable game, but it does very little to convey the atmosphere of Iliad (or that movie with Brad Pitt and Orlando Bloom, for that matter).

Troy is visually captivating, but otherwise struggles in every single aspect so important to Total War series. Somehow, it manages to be overly simplistic and complicated at the same time. The strings just did not attach quite right this time. [Issue#305]

The success of a Total War depends on the delicate balance between the turn-based portion of the game and the real-time strategic battles. While the latter are deep and with very few smudges, the former is extremely unbalanced and presents a series of issues – in some cases quite serious – that undermine the whole experience.

Total War Saga: Troy captures Ancient Greece, and smartly rationalizes mythology, but smart isn’t always the most fun

Though technically not a bad game by any stretch thanks to great art direction, solid gameplay, and several potentially fantastic ideas for the future, A Total War Saga: TROY is still an uneven and disappointingly stagnant entry in the Total War franchise.

Total War: Troy makes some curious changes to the Total War formula, but the less streamlined resource system, extra micromanagement, and weird mix of reality and mythology work against its favour to create a less than entrancing experience.

There is undoubtedly improvement here over the unremarkable Thrones of Britannia. Troy may not be as impassioned and hot-blooded as the characters it represents, but its distinctive factions, thematic systems and nuanced interpretation of myth nonetheless succeed in firing the imagination. 2. This is a good Total War game. I love Total War games. I could spend forever comparing every element of it against its corresponding point in previous Total War games, and we’d none of us feel any the wiser for doing so. I suppose the frustration for me is the thought of what sort of a mind-blower Troy could have been if it hadn’t needed to be a Total War game in its entirety, but could still have gotten away with copying the two-layer strategy format.
  3. Aug 17, 2020
Total War: Troy is a good example of a type of Total War game whose time, hopefully, is ending. It undercuts its strongest features with administrative bloat and repetitive action, forcing you into too many rote battles and campaigns rather than letting you focus on the truly epic clashes that characterize Total War games at their best. If Troy just removed the heavy ankle weights it fastens on the player, it might be a series highlight. As it is, it's an interesting and clever variation on a theme that has gotten a little tired. It succeeds in breathing some new life into it, but after Three Kingdoms’ reinvention, it feels like a surprisingly good encore at a show that’s gone on just a little too long.

For the pros, the campaign map and battle maps look very nice and battle maps have nice terrain to play around making it fun ans the Troy setting is cool. For the cons, its basically everything else. The AI cheats like a mofo and have infinite resources and just ignores the supply line penalty, auto resolve will stack wipe 4-6 units and leave the rest with like 5%-10% dmg, AI will force march around your armies just raid your town to be a pain but never group its forces to do a pitched battle so u will just run around being an idiot and rebuilding its armies every 2 turns. It also does not have Steam workshop so I manually have to keep up with all the mods and see if they are up to date. If I payed for this game I would have asked for a refund and I can see why they made this game Epic exclusive because they knew 100,000 people would not pay $40 for this broken game Full Review »

    1. WHY IS TOTAL WAR SO SPECIAL ? THE SPECIAL GRAND MAP STRATEGY GAMEPLAY , THEN THE BATTLEFIELD SHOWN US A WHOLD GRAND AND POWERFUL1. WHY IS TOTAL WAR SO SPECIAL ? THE SPECIAL GRAND MAP STRATEGY GAMEPLAY , THEN THE BATTLEFIELD SHOWN US A WHOLD GRAND AND POWERFUL BATTLEFIELD GAME EXPERIENCE , THIS IS IMPORTANT AND THIS IS THE TOTAL WARS HEART , BUT THIS HEART IS ALMOST OVER .

    2. warhammer movements system is good , but make shield becomes → just a accessory model with data , soldier will never use shield , TKD and TROY copied warhammer movements system , but just copied , dont improve it , so i can see many soldiers cut the air , and there was no feedback after being hit , we knew in rom 2 attila , TOB , we can still see soldier will use their shield to defence themselves , and use their shield to impact enemy , attackers will beat them shield hard and heavy , the weapons will hit their bodies and shields , then we can hear the sound effect between the friction of weapons , they will up their shield to resist arrow , this is good .

    3. warhammer movements system maybe is suitable for warhammer , but doesnt mean suitable to TKD TROY and other total war game , warhammer is warhammer , its a beautiful mysterious and a fantasy world , that means many and many things no need to think about real world , so the battefield and soldiers actions , their movements , the act of waving weapons , ways of attack and others , all of these things is no problem with exaggeration , but TKD is a history total war , its maybe not suitable with this movements system , TORY i dont know , i saw many air cut , and soldiers have no feedback after being hit , the shield is just a truly accessory on their hands .

4.Battlefield atmosphere : i dont know , maybe its just my illusion , but i think CA dont care about battlefield anymore . contrast with other total war games , TKD WH TROY make me feel something is missing , we knew total wars battlefield is very special , the important thing is : Total war games will show us a very grand and powerful battlefield , like : battlefield back ground music , soldiers charge , soldiers howl , weapons collision , large troop formation , soldiers fighting intense on the battlefield , then as for us : players need to watch clearly with soldiers every movements . besides , on the battlefield , need to leave a certain distance between people to fight and swing weapons , but now in TKD and TROY , people huddled together like ants , so how should they wave weapons , In Mount and Blade 2 , we knew if youre in the crowd , you cant wave your weapons and in TKD TROY , watch the battle , watch soldiers vs soldiers become a very boring things , there is no many special movements to soldier , CA now wanna make good heros system , but they forgot one thing : people wanna see a big grand battle , they wanna see more soldiers movements and actions , not just hero .
    5. now in TKD TORY , soldiers vs soldiers become to → you hit him, he hit you → you cut the air , he cut the air too , then someones dead , but total war battlefield is not just a " Turn based games " right ? in Napoleon , shogun 2 , rome 2 , attila , TOB , these wont happenning to much .

    6. CA has a very big ambition , i think this is a good way to grow up , but for now his ability is not enough to support his ambition , “ they abandoned half the hearts ” .

This game mimics the interface and game style of the Total War: Warhammer in a most terrible form.
