I laughed a lot while playing Tamagotchi Plaza and wish more games were this funny and silly but I also can't deny that it's also quite limited.

What’s in Tamagotchi Plaza is well-made enough and entertaining, particularly for the younger audience, but this is a very limited and shallow game that somehow manages to lack the meaning and intellectual value of Tamagotchi themselves. As an opportunity to play a few little minigames with your favourite critters, it has value, but as an experience where you get to hang out in the world of these mascots, Tamagotchi Plaza is lacking badly compared to the likes of Hello Kitty Island Adventure or Disney Dreamlight Valley.

Ultimately, Tamagotchi Plaza is a fairly lacklustre game but one that appropriately represents the Tamagotchi brand to the point where enthusiasts and young children may forgive its shallow gameplay loop.
  4. Just as I struggled to find anything to do in the game, I struggled to find much to write about in the review. The game is cute and promises to provide about two hours of fun, but after a while, you get bored.

Tamagotchi Plaza is a mediocre experience. While the aesthetic and the mood of the game fit its target audience nicely, portions of the game are unnecessarily complex and without instructions, making it even harder to fully grasp. While Tamagotchi Plaza features some interesting and even fun mini-games, the overall package isn’t worth the headache. Would it kill them to incorporate parts of the traditional Tamagotchi experience into its video games? Whether that would help with the game or not, at least it’s worth a discussion.

It isn’t necessarily that Tamagotchi Plaza is bad, as I do think it could be fun for kids or someone who really loves Bandai Namco’s virtual pet line. There are just some awkward decisions made that make it a little uncomfortable to play at times. And even if you do overcome that and work things out, it can feel like there’s not too much to do. Especially since you can’t even bring it out as “the early Switch 2 multiplayer minigame collection” due to how few games actually involve more than one person. For the right person, it could be fine, but it caters to a very specialized (and probably forgiving) audience.

In the end, Tamagotchi World is fine, provided you're willing to live with a number of caveats. The premise is fine, as is the implementation of the jobs in minigame form. The lack of tutorials is odd considering the young age of the intended audience. Additionally, the slow, grindy nature of the game can only keep you occupied for so long before the whole thing becomes boring, especially since there's nothing else to do besides these minigame jobs. If you're a fan of Tamagotchis, then this may be amusing for a short while, but everyone else looking for a solid set of minigames would be better served playing a number of other similar titles from the original Switch library.
