Bringing the best of past Sonic games into the modern gaming world with familiar yet fresh and striking levels.

Sonic x Shadow Generations is a must-have on the Nintendo Switch 2 for fans of the Blue Blur and The Ultimate Lifeform, letting you revisit classic levels from the franchise’s long history. There are a couple of minor performance hiccups, but nothing severe enough to impact your enjoyment.

It runs well and it looks great, and it gives hope that, at least for the next little while, Switch 2 ports won’t require you to make a few allowances for subpar performance.

Sonic X Shadow Generations is a fine game overall. Sonic Generations still holds up quite well after all this time, even if the additions feel slightly shoehorned, while Shadow Generations represents a refinement of the formula with a few additions that don't detract from the main game. For Switch 2 owners who never got this game before, this is a great version to get. However, for those who already have the game on the original Switch, the frame rate and resolution boosts aren't enough to ask for full price on the game and DLC again. Those in that situation can deduct a few points from the review's final score.

Sonic X Shadow Generations was a must-play a year ago, and if you haven’t played it yet, it definitely is now that you can do so virtually anywhere without too many compromises in terms of performance. It’s a shame that SEGA didn’t think about those who decided to buy it on Switch last year, who for now are at least forced to pay full price to play what is effectively one of the best Sonic games ever released. Which is not a great compliment.

An unrivalled adrenaline-pumping platformer, Sonic X Shadow Generations arrives as a launch title for the Switch 2 in perfect condition. Fans of the franchise or genre should, without doubt, have this on their must-buy list.

Sonic X Shadow Generations on the Nintendo Switch 2 is the version of the game that all Switch owners should own. The lack of upgrade option aside for original Switch owners, Sonic looks better than ever before thanks to its graphical makeover and additional playable campaign featuring the one, and only, Shadow the Hedgehog. With the spotlight on Shadow, players can now play as him in all of his glory while being treated to cinematic sequences that, quite frankly, look cool as hell.

The new version for Nintendo Switch 2 does not bring major improvements, but Sonic X Shadow Generations is one of the best and most complete platformers of the 35-year history of the blue hedgehog, thanks to its fusion of 2D and 3D elements from the times of Mega Drive and Dreamcast, two of Sega's best consoles... and of history.

Sonic X Shadow Generations is an excellent entry point into the series, and for Nintendo fans, it honestly doesn’t get any better than the Nintendo Switch 2 version. SEGA was able to craft an excellent port here that leaves the original Switch version behind, for better or worse if you’re a physical collector. Not only does the game run at 60 FPS without issues, but Sonic X Shadow Generations takes advantage of the Nintendo Switch 2 hardware and delivers great visuals worthy of a remaster. This port bodes well for future Sonic titles on the platform, and I do hope SEGA optimizes Sonic Frontiers to make that another solid game to play on Switch 2.

Sonic x Shadow Generations stands out as one of the stronger entries dedicated to SEGA’s iconic character. While Sonic Generations was already well-received at its original release, the addition of Shadow Generations rounds out the experience, making this collection appealing even to those familiar with the 2011 original. It’s not just for longtime fans of the Blue Blur but also for newcomers seeking a modern adventure, especially with the characters gaining renewed popularity thanks to recent films.

Overall, the Sonic X Shadow Generations experience is a welcome one. This release brings a nearly perfect version of the title to the Nintendo Switch 2. The Sonic Generations portion is just an enhanced version of the original title with minimal changes. Meanwhile, the Shadow Generations part is what sets this title apart as a new experience rather than “just” another remaster. On the Switch 2, performance is great both in handheld and docked, allowing Sonic X Shadow Generations to be a solid launch offering. For those interested in purchasing a physical copy of this game, be advised that it is in a Game-Key Card format.

The Switch 1 version of Sonic X Shadow Generations is undeniably the worst one, if only for its locked frame rate of 30fps. Fortunately, the Switch 2 version is a solid revision that’s almost on par with the PlayStation 5 version.

Placing above the Switch version but below the PS5, Sonic X Shadow Generations' Switch 2 port is serviceable, but only diehard fans need reapply.

Sonic gives me hope that my 34th year will be my best year too, and Sonic X Shadow Generations feels like a great way to send off the old era of Sonic while welcoming a new one.

Sonic X Shadow Generations is a slick, high-performance Switch 2 upgrade that shines with Shadow’s best outing yet.

Sonic x Shadow Generations feels right at home on Switch 2. Both Sonic Generations and the new Shadow campaign look fantastic, and performance is solid, making these fast-paced platforming experiences a joy to return to time and time again. It's just a shame there's no upgrade path for those who already own the game on the original Switch.

Sonic X Shadow Generations on Nintendo Switch 2 is a quality port that corrects many of the technical shortcomings of the previous version. It offers a fluid experience, visually appealing and fully enjoyable on both desktop and portable. But it does not add new content and its appeal is reduced if you already played on Switch 1 and were hoping for some kind of incentive to go through the cash register again.

Sonic has rarely been in such good form as in Generations, Shadow has never been as good as here and the fact that I enjoy his 3D stages almost more than Sonic Classic speaks volumes.

Sonic X Shadow Generations is still one of the best Sonic games on the market, and it runs absolutely wonderfully on the Switch 2.

Sonic X Shadow Generations is a responsive and habitually exhilarating port. The title showcases the capabilities of Nintendo’s new hardware with smooth framerates, HD fidelity, and speedy load times. Shadow’s campaign might steal the spotlight, but the whole package delivers speed, style, and audacious hedgehog spirit.

Sonic x Shadow Generations arrives on Switch 2 as the ultimate tribute to the blue blur, blending nostalgia and speed with a surprisingly bold and spectacular Shadow campaign. A solid package, though technically improvable.

With Sonic X Shadow Generations, Shadow brings his own set of levels that can easily match the quality of Sonic's. Thanks to Shadow's many interesting superpowers, some of these levels even manage to surpass that level of quality. However, it also exposes a bigger problem within the franchise. Even the best-designed levels in the series don’t always shine due to inherently imprecise controls and mediocre camera work. As such, Sonic X Shadow Generations is an excellent celebration of everything Sonic has achieved over the years—but it also highlights what needs improvement in the future.

Without an upgrade path this title comes down to whether or not you own it already. If you do on Switch, the upgrades aren’t necessarily worth a double dip. However, if you waited for the Switch 2 to jump in, this is more than worth the price of admission. Both games are excellent and worth checking out. I just wish Sega had included an upgrade path for existing owners. The game isn’t that old to begin with. For those that haven’t taken the plunge yet though are in for a treat.

Sonic gets overshadowed by his brooding counterpart Shadow in this remaster of 2011's excellent Sonic Generations. The game does have some problems unique to the Nintendo Switch 2, but aside from that it's still a solid entry in the library of Sonic games.

Sonic X Shadow Generations for the Nintendo Switch 2 delivers a fun experience that blends nostalgia with new content, featuring enhanced visuals, an all-new Shadow campaign, and well-crafted 2D stages — but it falls short of justifying the full price for those who already own the original, especially due to the lack of a free upgrade, excessive automation in 3D sections, and modest technical improvements.

One of Sonic’s better games is wonderfully remastered in the shape of Sonic X Shadow Generations, and although there is some exhilarating gameplay here if the time is taken to master the stages, 3D portions still have that familiar inconsistency at times, while Shadow’s story is more of the same but improves on the controls. A huge wealth of unlockables make this the ideal game for series fans, but it is a shame the 3DS levels weren’t included to form a meatier compilation.

Ultimately, Sonic X Shadow Generations reflects my long-running relationship with Sonic games. Like having Sonic and Shadow on both my shoulders, I felt both frustration and delight during various aspects of the game. Minor control issues and level designs get in the way of pure enjoyment, though there is still a sense of fun and speed that shines through. Shadow’s campaign adds some welcome variety but left me wanting more from it. The 3D levels are pure 3D Sonic—for better or worse—and the 2D levels do not capture the magic of the Mega Drive classics. Sonic fans will rejoice in revisiting Sonic’s old worlds and reliving Shadow’s past.

Fourteen years after the original release—and one year after its first reissue—Sonic x Shadow Generations remains an excellent video game that deserves to be discovered or rediscovered. The Nintendo Switch 2 version delivers a genuine technical upgrade, albeit with a few compromises. However, the lack of a free or discounted upgrade for owners of the 2024 version is hard to justify, especially given the complete absence of new content. If this is your first time playing it, consider yourself lucky: you’re about to experience one of the best Sonic games ever made.

So, whether you take a punt on Sonic X Shadow Generations for the Switch 2 will very much depend on whether you already own it or not. If you don’t, add two points to the score below and jump in: it’s a great game and this is undoubtedly the best way to play it on Nintendo systems. If you do, however, you should think twice about double-dipping. It’s already a splendid game on Switch 1, and with no upgrade path or new content, you're missing out on very little if you skip it.

On its own merits, Sonic Generations does its best to bring the best of both Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic together in a fun and creative adventure that’s sure to please Sonic fans all around. However, it tries too hard to fit itself into the same mould while attempting to keep true to the 3D Shadow experience, ultimately falling short of the lofty heights it aims for. Die hard fans might enjoy, but more casual players may find themselves overwhelmed by the sense of speed.

It took me a while to realize I wasn’t having quite as much fun with Sonic X Shadow Generations as I expected, given the high praise of the 2011 console original. Such elevation likely reflects the quality of Sonic games declining over the past 20 years, as even the better new titles can’t reach the peak of the ‘90s classics. Combine that with no upgrade for existing owners, and Sega has made it challenging to recommend this one on Switch 2. Many players would be better off with Sonic Mania or Origins. But if you’re a diehard fan who hasn’t played this yet, wishlist it and wait for a discount—you’ll be safe knowing that, even though it’s showing its age more than most would care to admit, you’re sure to find some entertainment.
